Abstract:By means of quotient-graph associated crystal prediction method, a new graphyne allotrope with unique Dirac nodal grid state is reported in this work. It is named as 191-E24Y24-1 according to its hexagonal lattice (with P6/mmm symmetry, No. 191) containing 24 sp2-hybridized carbon atoms and 24 sp-hybridized ones. The first-principles results show that the total energy of 191-E24Y24-1 is more favorable than that of recent synthesized -graphdiyne and carbon ene-yne. It is also demonstrated to be dynamically, thermally, and mechanically stable. Interestingly, the 191-E24Y24-1 harbors intrinsic semimetal features showing intriguing hexagonal Dirac nodal grid state in the reciprocal space. Such unique electronic state is stable against small external tensile strains, and it is tunable under compression strains which will transform to new triangle Dirac nodal grid state. Moreover, a new metastable graphyne allotrope named 191-E12Y36-4 with Dirac nodal loop state is also observed in the process of stretching 191-E24Y24-1 with large tensile strains. The results presented in this work reveal two novel graphyne allotropes with exotic electronic properties. These discoveries are not only physical interesting, but also provide potential material candidates for carbon-based high performance electronic nanodevices.

New Nanoporous Graphyne Monolayer as Nodal Line Semimetal: Double Dirac Points with an Ultrahigh Fermi Velocity

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) carbon materials play an important role in nanomaterials. We propose a new carbon monolayer, named hexagonal-4,4,4-graphyne (H4,4,4-graphyne), which is a nanoporous structure composed of rectangular carbon rings and triple bonds of carbon. Using first-principles calculations, we systematically studied the structure, stability, and band structure of this new material. We found that its energy is much lower than that of some experimental carbon materials and it is stable at least up to 1500 K. In contrast to the single Dirac point band structure of other 2D carbon monolayers, the band structure of H4,4,4-graphyne exhibits double Dirac points along the high symmetry points and the corresponding Fermi velocities (1.04~1.27 * 106 m/s) are asymmetric and higher than that of graphene. The origin of these double Dirac points is traced back to the nodal line states, which can be well explained by a tight-binding model. The H4,4,4-graphyne forms a moiré superstructure when placed on top of a BN substrate, while keeping the double Dirac points. These properties make H4,4,4-graphyne a promising semimetal material for applications in high-speed electronic devices.

Grapheayne: a class of low-energy carbon allotropes with diverse optoelectronic and topological properties

Abstract:A series of carbon allotropes with novel optoelectronic and rich topological properties is predicted by systematic first-principles calculations. These fascinating carbon allotropes can be derived by inserting acetylenic linkages (-C$\equiv$C-) into graphite, hence they are termed as grapheaynes. Grapheaynes possess two different space groups, $P$2/$m$ or $C$2/$m$, and contain simultaneously the $sp$, $sp^2$, and $sp^3$ chemical bonds. They have formation energies lower than the already experimentally synthesized graphdiyne and other theoretically predicted carbon allotropes with acetylenic linkages. Particularly, when the width $n$ of grapheayne-$n$ exceeds 15, its cohesive energy is lower than that of diamond, and approaches that of graphite with increasing $n$. Remarkably, we find that some grapheaynes behave as semiconductors with direct narrow band gaps and own the highest absorption coefficients among all known semiconducting carbon allotropes, while some others are topological semimetals with nodal lines. Especially, some grapheaynes can be engineered with tunable direct band gaps in the range of 1.07-1.87 eV and have ideal properties for photovoltaic applications. Our work not only uncovers the unique atomic arrangement and prominent properties of the grapheayne family, but also offers a treasury that provides promising materials for catalyst, energy storage, molecular sieves, solar cell, and electronic devices.

A novel two-dimensional all-carbon Dirac node-line semimetal

Abstract:Carbon allotropes have vast potential in various applications, including superconductivity, energy storage, catalysis, and photoelectric semiconductor devices. Recently, there has been significant research interest in exploring new carbon materials that exhibit unique electronic structures. Here, we propose a novel two-dimensional (2D) carbon allotrope called TCH-SSH-2D, which possesses a Dirac node-line (DNL) semimetallic state. The structure of TCH-SSH-2D is derived from the TCH-type Archimedean polyhedral carbon cluster units, combined with the SSH lattice model, possessing a space group of tetragonal P4/mmm. Using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that the system is dynamically, thermodynamically, and mechanically stable. It exhibits an energetically favorable structure with no imaginary frequency in the phonon dispersion curves and elastic constants satisfying the Born-Huang stability criterion. Our findings not only contribute to a deeper understanding of the carbon allotrope family but also provide an opportunity to explore unique Dirac states in two-dimensional pure carbon systems.

Abstract:<p>Carbon allotropes have a large family of materials with varieties of crystal structures and properties and can realize different topological phases. Using first principles calculations, we predict a new two-dimensional (2D) carbon allotrope, namely penta-octa-graphene, which consists of pentagonal and octagonal carbon rings. We find that penta-octa-graphene can host both type-I and type-II Dirac line nodes (DLNs). The band inversion between conduction and valence bands forms the type-I DLNs and the two highest valence bands form the type-II DLNs. We find that the type-I DLNs are robust to the biaxial strain and the type-II DLNs can be driven to type-I when applying over 3 <span class="math"><math>%</math></span> biaxial stretching strain. A lattice model based on the π orbitals of carbons is derived to understand the coexistence mechanism of type-I and type-II DLNs in penta-octa-graphene. In addition, we investigate the topological properties of type-I and type-II DLNs in penta-octa-graphene. Possible realizations and characterizations of this penta-octa-graphene in the experiment are also discussed. Our findings shed new light on the study of coexistence of multiple topological states in the 2D carbon allotropes.</p>

Abstract:Using a structural search method in combination with first-principles calculations, we found lots of low energy 2D carbon allotropes and examined all possible Dirac points around their Fermi levels. Three amazing 2D Dirac carbon allotropes have been discovered, named as S-graphene, D-graphene and E-graphene. By analyzing the topology correlations among S-, T, net W graphene and graphene, we found that a general rule is valuable for constructing 2D carbon allotropes that are keen to possess Dirac cones in their electronic structures. Based on this rule, we have successfully designed many new 2D carbon allotropes possessing Dirac cones. Their energy order can be well described by an Ising-like model, and some allotropes are energetically more stable than those recently reported. The related electronic structures of these Dirac allotropes are anisotropy distinguished from those of graphene. Moreover, the fact that D- and E-graphene present Dirac cones suggests that sp hybridization or sp(3) hybridization could not suppress the emerging of Dirac features. Our results demonstrate that the Dirac cone and carrier linear dispersion is a very common feature in 2D carbon allotropes and can exist beyond the limitations of fundamental structure features of graphene.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials with Dirac cones exhibit rich physics and many intriguing properties, but the search for new 2D Dirac materials is still a current hotspot. Using the global particle-swarm optimization method and density functional theory, we predict a new stable graphene-like 2D Dirac material: a Be3C2 monolayer with a hexagonal honeycomb structure. The Dirac point occurs exactly at the Fermi level and arises from the merging of the hybridized p(z) bands of Be and C atoms. Most interestingly, this monolayer exhibits a high Fermi velocity in the same order of graphene. Moreover, the Dirac cone is very robust and retains even included spin-orbit coupling or external strain. These outstanding properties render the Be3C2 monolayer a promising 2D material for special electronics applications.

Abstract:Graphynes consisting of sp- and sp 2 -hybridized carbon atoms represent two-dimensional allotropes of the carbon family with intriguing properties. Based on first-principles calculations, we propose a stable three-dimensional (3D) framework (with the space group of I4 1 /amd) of sp- and sp 2 -hybridized carbon atoms termed super-graphyne. The exotic property of super-graphyne lies in the semi-metallic features with a highly anisotropic band structure in the reciprocal space. Along the Г-X direction, there is a Dirac cone centered at the X point with the Fermi velocity higher than that in graphene, while the bands are nearly dispersionless along the X-P direction, featured by node line Dirac semimetals. Additionally, electron spin-polarization is predicted on the bared (001) surface of super-graphyne, which preserves the semi-metallic properties. These interesting results not only enrich the 3D allotropes of the carbon family but could also find applications in electronic devices.

Abstract:Graphdiyne is a newly discovered 2D carbon allotrope with many special features. Using density functional theory plus van der Waals (vdW) density functional, we investigate the structural, electronic, and optical properties of several possible graphdiyne bulk structures. We find that bulk graphdiyne can be either a semiconductor or a metal, depending on its stacking configuration. The interlayer vdW force red shifts the optical absorption peaks of bulk graphdiyne relative to those of the monolayer, and spectra of different stackings display notable differences in the energy range below 1 eV. Finally, combining with previous electrical and optical experiments, we identify the structure of the recently synthesized graphdiyne film.
On the Mechanical, Electronic, and Optical Properties of 8-16-4 Graphyne: A 2D Carbon Allotrope with Dirac Cones

Abstract:Due to the success achieved by graphene, several 2D carbon-based allotropes were theoretically predicted and experimentally synthesized. We used density functional theory and reactive molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the mechanical, structural, electronic, and optical properties of 8-16-4 Graphyne. The results showed that this material exhibits good dynamical and thermal stabilities. Its formation energy and elastic moduli are -8.57 eV/atom and 262.37 GPa, respectively. This graphyne analogue is a semi-metal and presents two Dirac cones in its band structure. Moreover, it is transparent, and its intense optical activity is limited to the infrared region. Remarkably, the band structure of 8-16-4 Graphyne remains practically unchanged at even moderate strain regimes. As far as we know, this is the first 2D carbon allotrope to exhibit this behavior.

Stacking-dependent structural and electronic properties of trilayer γ-graphyne: An approach for new 2D carbon allotropes

Abstract:Vertical stacks of two-dimensional (2D) materials with interlayer van der Waals (vdW) force have provided a versatile approach for creating hybrid materials and modulating various properties. In this work, the structural and electronic properties of trilayer γ-graphyne, involving different stacking patterns, have been investigated through first-principles approaches. The result indicates that a metal-to-semiconducting transition can be triggered simply by switching the stacking order of trilayer γ-graphyne. More interestingly, in addition to typical vdW homostructures, new 2D carbon allotropes with novel carbon networks can be achieved on the basis of trilayer γ-graphyne, arising from the absence of intralayer acetylene linkages during the structural relaxation. One of the new 2D carbon allotropes possesses an intrinsic semiconducting nature with a wide bandgap of 1.827 eV, coupled with superior structural stability beyond single-layer γ-graphyne. Moreover, the biaxial strain effect on the new 2D carbon allotrope, as well as the trilayer vdW stacks, has also been revealed in this work. Correspondingly, the in-plane tensile strain is demonstrated to further enlarge the electronic bandgaps in these carbon sheets. Therefore, the results of this work imply the great potential of few-layer graphyne in future carbon-based nanoelectronic devices, and simultaneously provide a new approach for developing and synthesizing novel 2D carbon allotropes via the vertical stacking of graphyne with inherent acetylene linkages.

Graphyne as a second-order and real Chern topological insulator in two dimensions

Abstract:Higher-order topological phases and real topological phases are two emerging topics in topological states of matter, which have been attracting considerable research interest. However, it remains a challenge to find realistic materials that can realize these exotic phases. Here, based on first-principles calculations and theoretical analysis, we identify graphyne, the representative of the graphyne-family carbon allotropes, as a two-dimensional (2D) second-order topological insulator and a real Chern insulator. We show that graphyne has a direct bulk band gap at the three $M$ points, forming three valleys. The bulk bands feature a double band inversion, which is characterized by the nontrivial real Chern number enabled by the spacetime-inversion symmetry. The real Chern number is explicitly evaluated by both the Wilson-loop method and the parity approach, and we show that it dictates the existence of Dirac type edge bands and the topological corner states. Furthermore, we find that the topological phase transition in graphyne from the second-order topological insulator to a trivial insulator is mediated by a 2D Weyl semimetal phase. The robustness of the corner states against symmetry breaking and possible experimental detection methods are discussed.

A Novel Sp3 Carbon Allotrope with 4+5+6+7+8 Odd-Even Ring

Abstract:In this study, we report a novel monoclinic phase of carbon that contains 4+5+6+7+8 member rings in P21/m symmetry, identified by applying the stochastic surface walking method combined with high dimensional neural network potentials. We demonstrate that this phase possesses lower energy than graphite above 21.5 GPa. The phonon spectra show that this structure is stable under ambient pressure. This phase is a super hard material with a shear hardness as high as 81.9 GPa while it possesses an indirect band gap of 3.16 eV. The energy barrier of graphite to the Y phase is 0.27 eV, slightly higher than that of the hexagonal diamond (0.21 eV) in a similar phase transition mechanism. Two types of thermodynamically stable interfaces can be formed with the hexagonal diamond (HD), namely (001)Y//(100)HD, [100]Y//[010]HD and (001)Y//(001)HD, [010]Y//[001]HD. Although the discrete bulk Y phase is hard to synthesize, a faulted structure between HD is possible because of the well-matched interface between Y and HD. Our work shows that the Y phase may be formed in some special conditions and enhances our understanding of the formation of novel carbon allotropes.
Scalable synthesis and characterization of multilayer $γ$-graphyne, new carbon crystals with a small direct bandgap

Abstract:$\gamma$-Graphyne is the most symmetric sp2/sp1 allotrope of carbon, which can be viewed as graphene uniformly expanded through insertion of two-carbon acetylenic units between all the aromatic rings. To date, synthesis of bulk $\gamma$-graphyne has remained a challenge. We here report the synthesis of multilayer $\gamma$-graphyne through crystallization-assisted irreversible cross-coupling polymerization. Comprehensive characterization of this new carbon phase is described, including synchrotron X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, lateral force microscopy, Raman and infrared spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. Experiments indicate that $\gamma$-graphyne is a 0.48 eV bandgap semiconductor, with a hexagonal a-axis spacing of 6.88 Å and an interlayer spacing of 3.48 Å, which is consistent with theoretical predictions. The observed crystal structure has an aperiodic sheet stacking. The material is thermally stable up to 240 $^\circ$C but undergoes a transformation at higher temperatures. While conventional 2D polymerizations and reticular chemistry rely on error correction through reversibility, we demonstrate that a periodic covalent lattice can be synthesized under purely kinetic control. The reported methodology is scalable and inspires extension to other allotropes of the graphyne family.

Abstract:Graphyne and two-dimensional porous carbon-based materials have garnered significant attention due to their interesting structural characteristics and essential properties for new technological applications. Within this scope, this work investigates the structural, thermal, electronic, optical, and mechanical properties of a novel two-dimensional allotrope that combines triangular (T) and hexagonal (H) rings, connected by acetylenic linkages (graphyne-like), thus named TH-graphyne (TH-GY). This study comprehensively characterizes the proposed system's behavior using density functional theory, ab initio molecular dynamics, and classical reactive molecular dynamics simulations. Our results confirm the structural stability of TH-GY. AIMD simulations demonstrate the material's thermal stability at elevated temperatures, while phonon dispersions indicate its dynamical stability. Electronic band structure calculations show that the system is metallic. The analysis of optical properties reveals intense activity in the visible and UV regions, with pronounced anisotropy. A machine learning interatomic potentials model was developed for TH-GY and used to determine the mechanical behavior of the system, which exhibits Young's modulus ranging from 263 to 356 GPa, highlighting its flexibility. Classical reactive MD simulations elucidate the fracture behavior of TH-GY, revealing distinct fracture patterns and mechanical anisotropy.

Abstract:y-Graphyne is an emerging carbon allotrope, and synthesis of large -size atomically precise y-graphyne fragments would be crucial to un-derstand its distinctive properties. Herein, a long-sought-after graphyne spoked wheel with 6-fold symmetry was synthesized mainly through cobalt(0)-catalyzed cyclotrimerization of a triyne in-termediate followed by 12-fold intramolecular Stille coupling reac-tions. Its structure was unambiguously confirmed by X-ray crystallo-graphic analysis, which revealed a closely stacked dimer structure. NMR and theoretical analysis disclosed that fusion of six anti -aro-matic hexadehydro[12]annulene units led to a decrease in local aromaticity of all seven benzenoid rings (particularly, the central one), which is quite different from a graphene analog, hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC). Its optical and electrochemical proper-ties are also different from those of HBC, showing allowed HOMO / LUMO electronic transition and facile electrochemical reduction. This study provided a new method for the synthesis of even larger y-graphyne fragments and demonstrated the unique electronic properties and packing structure of y-graphyne as compared with those of graphene.
M-graphene: a Metastable Two-Dimensional Carbon Allotrope

Abstract:Ever since the exfoliation of graphene, two-dimensional (2D) atomic layers derived from bulk materials have received significant attention because of their fascinating properties, as well as their potential for technological applications. In this work, a metastable planar 2D carbon allotrope composed of 5 + 7 rings (dubbed M-graphene) was predicted via an unbiased crystal structure prediction algorithm based upon the particle swarm methodology and studied via first-principles calculations. Computations show that M-graphene is not only dynamically stable, but it can also withstand temperatures as high as 2000 K. Our simulations reveal that it is a promising candidate as an anode material for Li-ion batteries (LIBs), because of the relatively low diffusion energy barrier of Li (0.338 eV), open-circuit potential (0.029 V) and high lithium-storage capacity (279 mAh g(-1)). Structural, mechanical, and electronic properties of single graphyne layers based on a 2D biphenylene network

Abstract:Graphene is a promising material for the development of applications in nanoelectronic devices, but the lack of a band gap necessitates the search for ways to tune its electronic properties. In addition to doping, defects, and nanoribbons, a more radical alternative is the development of 2D forms with structures that are in clear departure from the honeycomb lattice, such as graphynes, with the distinctive property of involving carbon atoms with both hybridizations sp and sp2. The density and details of how the acetylenic links are distributed allow for a variety of electronic signatures. Here we propose a graphyne system based on the recently synthesized biphenylene monolayer. We demonstrate that this system features highly localized states with a spin-polarized semiconducting configuration. We study its stability and show that the system's structural details directly influence its highly anisotropic electronic properties. Finally, we show that the symmetry of the frontier states can be further tuned by modulating the size of the acetylenic chains forming the system.
