Abstract:In this brief report, the group velocity of the eigen-modes in sonic crystals is derived, and shown to equal the averaged energy velocity of the eigen-modes. How the group velocity can be used to describe acoustic energy flows in sonic crystals is discussed.

Abstract:We have studied the propagation of a surface acoustic waves (SAW), in a structure constituted by a 2D phononic film (a few micrometers thick and having lattice constants of a few hundreds of micrometers in the two directions of the propagation plane) deposited onto a homogeneous semi-infinite substrate. First, we have calculated the dispersion relations of the acoustic modes by using a plane waves expansion method. We found that the surface branch exhibits both the folding effect and a band gap for the propagation along some particular directions. This is a very interesting result which demonstrates that the effects related to the existence of the band gap (sound velocity dispersion, diffraction, refraction, ultrasound tunneling, etc.) can all appear, even if the thickness of the phononic film is much less than the penetration depth of the SAW. Then, we used an all-optical technique to monitor the spectral content of the SAW propagating along the GammaX direction in the reduced Brillouin zone. We show that a wave with frequency in the stop band, is destructively diffracted after it propagates through less than ten periods. Finally, we report on measurements of the Rayleigh wave phase velocity and we show that the transit time is independent of the distance traveled inside the phononic crystal, suggesting that tunneling trough the sample is involved.

Abstract:Low-frequency longitudinal (compressional) and transverse (shear) modes of phonons in Debye-Yukawa complex plasma crystals are studied. The general dispersion relations obtained for two-dimensional modes [Wang, Bhattacharjee, and Hu, Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 2596 (200 1)] are applied to the long-wavelength phonon regime with the wavenumber k -> 0, and the shielding parameter kappa -> 0 to calculate the acoustic velocity of phonons in complex plasma crystals. Abstract:Both negative and positive phase velocities for acoustic waves have been experimentally established in a two-dimensional triangular sonic crystal (SC) consisting of steel cylinders embedded in air at first. With the increase of the SCs thickness layer by layer in the experiments, phase shifts decrease in the second band but increase in the first band, showing the negative and the positive phase velocities, respectively. Moreover, the dispersion relation of the SC is constructed by the phase information, which is consistent well with the theoretical results. These abundant characteristics of acoustic wave propagation in the SC might be useful for the device applications.

Abstract:The effective velocity of elastic waves for two-dimensional (2D) phononic crystals with rectangular lattice in the long-wavelength limit is studied by numerical simulations. It is demonstrated that, for all three propagating modes, not only the modes polarized in-plane (L wave and SV wave), but also the mode polarized out-plane (SH wave), the effective velocities are distinctly anisotropic and the slowness curves exhibit twofold symmetry. The anisotropy increases as the filling fraction increases or as the width to length ratio of the lattice decreases, and high anisotropy can be obtained in phononic crystals with large contrast between material parameters, which is much higher in rectangular lattice than in square lattice with the same material parameters. Owing to these dependences, the effective velocity can be controlled in engineering.

Abstract:Effective velocities of elastic waves propagating in two-dimensional phononic crystal at low frequencies are analysed theoretically, and exact analytical formulas for effective velocities of elastic waves are derived according to the method presented by Krokhin et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 91 (2003) 264302]. Numerical calculations for phononic crystals consisted of array of Pb cylinders embedded in epoxy show that the composites have distinct anisotropy at low filling fraction. The anisotropy increases as the filling fraction increases, while as the filling fraction closes to the limitation, the anisotropy decreases.

Abstract:The propagation of elastic waves in two-dimensional phononic crystals is investigated theoretically in the long-wavelength limit. Exact analytical formulas for effective velocities of elastic waves are derived according to the method presented by Krokhin [Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 264302 (2003)]. Abstract:Negative refractions of acoustic waves in a two-dimensional (2D) sonic crystal were studied both experimentally and theoretically. By calculating the acoustic band structure and equifrequency surfaces, we theoretically analyzed the acoustic single-beam negative refraction in the first band operating in the ultrasonic regime. A 2D square sonic crystal was constructed with 2.0-mm-diam steel cylinders arranged as square arrays of 2.5 mm lattice constant. A scanning transmission measurement of spatial distribution was carried out to establish the acoustic refraction of a single Gaussian beam. It was demonstrated that the negative refraction is strongly dependent on both frequencies and incident angles, which shows great potential in acoustic devices.

Abstract:Three-dimensional localization of acoustic waves is investigated for a two-dimensional sonic crystal without defects. By studying the wave packet superposed by Bloch modes at the isofrequency surface, we predict the existence of nonpropagating X-shaped waves at either a local top point or a saddle point of a band, where diffractions in different directions cancel out. Different from traveling X waves in homogeneous media, acoustic energy can be localized stationarily within a small space region. Such a “soliton-like” feature has implication in diverse practical situations of focused ultrasound application where a focal region with high spatial stability is necessary.

Abstract:Phononic crystal is an artificial periodic structure with the ability to regulate and control the wave propagation of particular frequencies and has been widely used in many applications. The adhesive layer bonding different constituents in the periodic structure of phononic crystals is usually a viscoelastic material, which has frequency-dependent material properties. In this paper, an analytical model based on the transfer matrix method is developed to study the bandgap structures of SH-wave (a shear wave with the propagation direction normal to the motion plane) in a one-dimensional phononic crystal consisting of two different elastic constituents bonded by the viscoelastic adhesive layer. The results show that the viscosity of the adhesive layer has a significant influence on the bandgap structure at the region of high frequency. The effects of various material parameters of the viscoelastic adhesive layer such as the relaxation time, the final-state modulus and the initial-state modulus are systematically studied. These results are very helpful in the practical design of phononic crystals involving the viscoelastic adhesive layers.
Bandgap characteristics of phononic crystals in steady and unsteady flows

Abstract:Over the past 30 years, most phononic crystal research has been done for a stationary medium. As reported in a recent experimental study, phononic crystals cannot preserve their bandgaps in the presence of flow. In this study, the bandgap characteristics of a two-dimensional phononic crystal in steady and unsteady flows are investigated theoretically. To identify the effect of the flow on sound insulation in the bandgap frequency ranges, the acoustic reflectance spectra of phononic crystals for different types of background flows, including a uniform flow, a compressible potential flow, and a turbulent flow were calculated. For the steady flows, which include uniform and compressible potential flows, the reflectance spectra are shifted to a lower frequency by the factor 1-M2 due to convection when the flow is in the same direction as the incident wave. Moreover, the reflectance spectra of a phononic crystal in a turbulent flow were evaluated for various combinations of inflow speeds and geometric parameters, such as the filling ratio and the number of layers. Due to the aerodynamic noise and fluid convection, a phononic crystal cannot work as an acoustic barrier, rather it becomes an aeroacoustic source in a turbulent flow.

Abstract:We designed chiral phononic crystals and studied their properties by using the layer multiple scattering method. The transmittance curves and the corresponding band structures show that this kind of structure possesses significant polarization gaps. The chiral structures break the symmetry so that the degenerate transverse modes split into a pair of right-hand polarized mode and left-hand polarized mode. The polarization splitting in the low-frequency range is enhanced in systems of large filling ratios. We also demonstrate that chiral structures containing strongly resonant units can induce negative group velocity in elastic waves, and stronger resonance brings a wider band of negative group velocity.
Refraction Characteristics of Phononic Crystals

Abstract:The refraction properties of phononic crystals are revealed by examining the anti-plane shear waves in doubly periodic elastic composites with unit cells containing rectangular and/or elliptical inclusions. The band-structure, group velocity, and energy-flux vector are calculated using a powerful variational method which accurately and efficiently yields all the field quantities over multiple frequency pass-bands. Equifrequency contours and energy-flux vectors are calculated as functions of the wave-vector. By superimposing the energy-flux vectors on equifrequency contours in the plane of the wave-vector components, and supplementing this with a three-dimensional graph of the corresponding frequency surface,a wealth of information is extracted essentially at a glance. This way it is shown that a composite with even a simple square unit cell containing a central circular inclusion can display negative or positive energy and phase-velocity refractions, or simply performs a harmonic vibration (standing wave), depending on the frequency and the wave-vector. Moreover that the same composite when interfaced with a suitable homogeneous solid can display: 1. negative refraction with negative phase-velocity refraction; 2. negative refraction with positive phase-velocity refraction; 3. positive refraction with negative phase-velocity refraction; 4. positive refraction with positive phase-velocity refraction; or even 5. complete reflection with no energy transmission, depending on the frequency, and direction and the wave length of the plane-wave which is incident from the homogeneous solid to the interface. By comparing our results with those obtained using the Rayleigh quotient and, for the layered case, with the exact solutions, the remarkable accuracy and the convergence rate of the present solution method are demonstrated. Abstract:We used the transfer matrix method to investigate the conditions supporting the existence of directional bulk waves in a two-dimensional (2D) phononic crystal. The 2D crystal was a square lattice of unit cells composed of rectangular subunits constituted of two different isotropic continuous media. We established the conditions on the geometry of the phononic crystal and its constitutive media for the emergence of waves, which, for the same handedness, exhibited a non-zero amplitude in one direction within the crystal's 2D Brillouin zone and zero amplitude in the opposite direction. Due to time-reversal symmetry, the crystal supported propagation in the reverse direction for the opposite handedness. These features may enable robust directional propagation of bulk acoustic waves and topological acoustic technology.

Abstract:Extensive applications of chiral lattice structures in the field of acoustic wave manipulation and vibration modulation show the effectiveness of chirality route to the design of phononic crystals. However, how and to what extent the material chirality affects the band gap properties of phononic crystals remains unclear. In this study, one-dimensional phononic crystals made of chiral materials is proposed, and a theoretical model of shear horizontal (SH) wave propagation in the chiral phononic crystals is developed based on the noncentrosymmetric micropolar elasticity theory. Through the transfer matrix method, the dispersion relationship of SH wave propagation is obtained and the effects of material chirality on the band-gap properties are investigated. Our work demonstrates that the change of material chirality can significantly affect the dispersion relationship of phononic crystals, leading to the wide band gap and low frequency. In a unit cell, when the chiral coefficients of the two parts have opposite signs but the same magnitude and the chiral directions are consistent with the vibrational direction, it is the most favorable for the phononic crystals to achieve the lowest frequency and widest band gap. This study suggests that the material chirality can be harnessed to effectively tune the band-gap properties of phononic crystals. Abstract:We present a type of sonic crystal composed with an array of two-dimensional Helmholtz resonators, which in the long-wave regime have both a high relative acoustic refractive index n and at the same time, a small acoustic impedance Z mismatch with air for airborne sound. We analyze the n and Z of such sonic crystals by finite-difference time-domain simulations, and by mapping our results to a corresponding electromagnetic (EM) model, and we find that our Helmholtz resonant sonic crystal has a bigger effective magnetic permeability mu than the conventional rigid-cylinder sonic crystal in its EM counterpart. As a result, a thin convergent lens with very good focusing effect is demonstrated based on our crystal.

Abstract:Acoustic wave exhibits inherently different characters when propagating in sonic band-gap materials. We address negative refractions of acoustic wave both experimentally and theoretically in two dimensional sonic crystals constructed with steel rods embedded in air. With lattice symmetry and artificial ldquoatomsrdquo designing, refraction of acoustic wave in the crystals could be manipulated from positive to negative and from defocusing to focusing with sonic crystal plates. Analogous to enhanced transmission of optical wave, enhanced acoustic wave transmission through narrow slit smaller than wavelength has been established as well, which is modeled as the coupling of surface waves and cavity mode in the slits. These abnormal behaviors show that sonic crystal is emerging as a kind of acoustic metamaterials.
Origin and Tuning of Bandgap in Chiral Phononic Crystals

Abstract:The wave equation revealing the wave propagation in chiral phononic crystals, established through force equilibrium law, conceals the underlying physical information, such as the essence of the motion coupling and the inertial amplification effect. This has led to a controversy over the bandgap mechanism. In this article, we theoretically unveil the reason for this controversy, and put forward an alternative approach from wave behavior to formulate the wave equation, offering an alternative pathway to articulate the bandgap physics directly. Based on the physics revealed by our theory method, we identify the obstacles in coupled acoustic and optic branches to widen and lower the bandgap. Then we introduce an approach based on spherical hinges to decrease the barriers, for customizing the bandgap frequency and width. Finally, we validate our proposal through numerical simulation and experimental demonstration. The wave equation established for chiral phononic crystals based reveals only the coupling of acoustic and optic branches, hiding the complexity of the bandgap physics. The alternative method proposed in this paper allows direct observation of the essential physics, and enables to decouple acoustic and optic branches for the manipulation of band gaps.
Calculation of Reciprocal Velocity Curves of Intrinsic Surface Acoustic Wave in Quartz Crystal

Abstract:Quartz crystal has excellent piezoelectric properties, it can be used as substrates of surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices, for example delay line, filter, oscillator, convolver, acousto-optic (AO) device and so on. In this paper, Intrinsic SAW basic equation group and SAW mechanical boundary condition equation group are deduced from character equation of the crystal. Intrinsic SAW velocities are calculated using circle iterative method in three coordinate planes of quartz crystal systematically. Stiffness coefficient of piezoelectric crystal can be changed by piezoelectric effect and it is named as piezoelectric modified stiffness coefficient. Reciprocal velocity curves of quartz crystal in the three coordinate planes using the non-modified stiffness coefficients and the piezoelectric modified stiffness coefficients are drawn respectively. Configurations and periods of the curves are similar to projection figures of crystal lattice of the triangle crystal system in same coordinate planes. It means that there is internal relationship between the SAW properties and point group symmetries of the crystal. Research results lay a solid base for design and manufacture of the SAW device. It has theoretical significance and practical value.
Pseudo-surface acoustic waves in hypersonic surface phononic crystals

Abstract:We present a theoretical framework allowing to properly address the nature of surface-like eigenmodes in a hypersonic surface phononic crystal, a composite structure made of periodic metal stripes of nanometer size and periodicity of 1 micron, deposited over a semi-infinite silicon substrate. In surface-based phononic crystals there is no distinction between the eigenmodes of the periodically nanostructured overlayer and the surface acoustic modes of the semi-infinite substrate, the solution of the elastic equation being a pseudo-surface acoustic wave partially localized on the nanostructures and radiating energy into the bulk. This problem is particularly severe in the hypersonic frequency range, where semi-infinite substrate's surface acoustic modes strongly couple to the periodic overlayer, thus preventing any perturbative approach. We solve the problem introducing a surface-likeness coefficient as a tool allowing to find pseudo-surface acoustic waves and to calculate their line shapes. Having accessed the pseudo-surface modes of the composite structure, the same theoretical frame allows reporting on the gap opening in the now well-defined pseudo-SAW frequency spectrum. We show how the filling fraction, mass loading and geometric factors affect both the frequency gap, and how the mechanical energy is scattered out of the surface waveguiding modes.

Pseudo-time-reversal symmetry and topological edge states in two-dimensional acoustic crystals

Abstract:We propose a simple two-dimensional acoustic crystal to realize topologically protected edge states for acoustic waves. The acoustic crystal is composed of a triangular array of core-shell cylinders embedded in a water host. By utilizing the point group symmetry of two doubly degenerate eigenstates at the \Gamma point, we can construct pseudo-time-reversal symmetry as well as pseudo-spin states in this classical system. We develop an effective Hamiltonian model for the associated dispersion bands around the Brillouin zone center, and find the inherent link between the band inversion and the topological phase transition. With numerical simulations, we unambiguously demonstrate the unidirectional propagation of acoustic edge states along the interface between a topologically nontrivial acoustic crystal and a trivial one, and the robustness of the edge states against defects with sharp bends. Our work provides a new design paradigm for manipulating and transporting acoustic waves in a topologically protected manner. Technological applications and devices based on our design are expected in various frequency ranges of interest, spanning from infrasound to ultrasound.
