Abstract:Ocean acidification poses a substantial threat to global marine ecosystems, estuaries are more vulnerable to ocean acidification compared to open oceans due to their weaker buffering capacity. This study examined the carbonate parameters off the Yangtze River estuary (YRE) during summer 2019 and investigated seasonal variations in total alkalinity (TA) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) transport in the lower Yangtze River in 2019. Monthly DIC (1566-2164 mu mol/kg) and TA (1471-2128 mu mol/kg) in the Yangtze River were negatively correlated with water discharge. Buffer factor ( beta DIC ) was calculated and used to evaluate the buffering capacity, which ranged from 65 to 256 mu mol/kg and increased seaward along the YRE. Conservative mixing models indicated that the estuary had a minimum buffer zone (MBZ) at salinity of 2-9 during the high discharge periods. And the salinity of the MBZ was positively correlated with the riverine DIC:TA ratio. The construction of the Three Gorges Dam has resulted in a decrease in the Yangtze River's DIC:TA ratio, leading to the migration of the estuarine MBZ towards lower salinity regions. The effect of anthropogenic CO2 2 invasion on estuarine buffering capacity was opposite to that of dam construction, leading to the migration of the estuarine MBZ towards higher salinity regions. Biological influences on the buffering capacity in the YRE were also quite considerable. Net autotrophy slightly enhanced the buffering capacity of the estuarine surface water, while net heterotrophy significantly weakened the buffering capacity of the estuarine bottom water. Eutrophication could intensify the biological influences on the buffering capacity. Globally, mid-latitude estuaries, such as the YRE, generally exhibit the strongest buffering capacity, while estuaries in Arctic regions tend to have the weakest buffering capacity.

Abstract:It is commonly assumed that dams retain nutrients and cause eutrophication in reservoirs after impoundment. In this study, we explored denitrification in a riparian zone at the land-water interface in a hydropower reservoir of the upper Mekong River. Results demonstrated that hydropower production intensified water level fluctuations in the reservoir and significantly accelerated riparian denitrification process at the land-water interface; the denitrification rate exhibited a strong positive relationship with the period of water level rising-falling cycle (r(2) = 0.98, P < 0.05). Intensified water level fluctuations created frequently alternate wetting-drying cycles and enhanced hyporheic exchanges in the riparian zone, which accelerated organic carbon mineralization and thereby increased carbon source supply to fuel denitrification. In addition, river impoundment after dam construction appreciably enlarged the hot spots for riparian denitrification. The accelerated denitrification as well as the enlarged hot spots area jointly enhanced nitrogen removal from impounded rivers. These findings could advance fundamental knowledge on the environmental impacts of hydropower development on rivers.

Abstract:The increased use of hydropower is currently driving the greatest surge in global dam construction since the mid-20th century, meaning that most major rivers on Earth are now dammed. Dams impede the flow of essential nutrients, including carbon, phosphorus, nitrogen and silicon, along river networks, leading to enhanced nutrient transformation and elimination. Increased nutrient retention via sedimentation or gaseous elimination in dammed reservoirs influences downstream terrestrial and coastal environments. Reservoirs can also become hotspots for greenhouse gas emission, potentially impacting how 'green' hydropower is compared with fossil-fuel burning. In this Review, we discuss how damming changes nutrient biogeochemistry along river networks, as well as its broader environmental consequences. The influences of construction and management practices on nutrient elimination, the emission of greenhouse gases and potential remobilization of legacy nutrients are also examined. We further consider how regulating hydraulic residence time and environmental flows (or e-flows) can be used in planning and operation from dam conception to deconstruction.

Abstract:River damming has brought great benefits to flood mitigation, energy and food production, and will continue to play a significant role in global energy supply, particularly in Asia, Africa, and South America. However, dams have extensively altered global river dynamics, including riverine connectivity, hydrological, thermal, sediment and solute regimes, and the channel morphology. These alterations have detrimental effects on the quality and quantity of fish habitat and associated impacts on aquatic life. Indeed, dams have been implicated in the decline of numerous fishes, emphasizing the need for effective conservation measures. Here, we present a global synthesis of critical issues concerning the impacts of river damming on physical fish habitats, with a particular focus on key fish species across continents. We also consider current fish conservation measures and their applicability in different contexts. Finally, we identify future research needs. The information presented herein will help support sustainable dam operation under the constraints of future climate change and human needs. River damming yields great social-economic benefits, but also causes significant eco-environmental impacts, particularly on fish. Dams block fish migration routes, alter hydrological and water temperature regimes, and modify channel morphology. These changes impact fish physical habitats and associated communities. Here, we synthesize the impacts of river damming on fish physical habitats, and review potential conservation measures that could be used to off-set or mitigate the impacts of dams on fish habitats, populations and communities. Abstract:The long-term changes in composition and export of particulate organic carbon (POC) by rivers due to dam construction are poorly known. Based on observations, incubation experiments and modelling, this study analyzed the sources, spatial and temporal distribution and annual export of POC in the Changjiang River during recent decades to explore the POC changes due to dam construction. Changes in POC composition resulted from both increasing POC sequestration and carbon fixation in the river basin. The allochthonous POC (from terrestrial input) export by the Changjiang River to its estuary decreased by ∼90% between 1956 and 2002 and 2013–2019. We estimated that 2.3 ± 0.5 Mt C/yr allochthonous POC has been sequestered in the Changjiang watershed since 2013. The autochthonous (entirely from in-stream riverine primary production) contribution increased from 1% to 55% of total POC export during the same period due to improved light transparency caused by decreased sediment discharge. Global POC trapping in nine large rivers strongly impacted by dams is 12% of the global riverine POC export. The reduced POC export and increase in labile autochthonous POC strongly impact the estuarine carbon cycle. Therefore, with continued dam construction in the future, important changes in the riverine and estuarine carbon cycle can be expected.

Abstract:Estuarine wetlands are an important part of coastal blue carbon and play an essential role in mitigating climate change. However, their geographical location typically exposes them to numerous anthropogenic disturbances. The responses of carbon sink function to changes in ecological factors induced by these disturbances still lack a systematic and comprehensive compendium. To fill this knowledge gap, we selected the Yangtze River estuary, a representative estuary in China, and reviewed the potential effects of anthropogenic disturbances on the carbon sink function of wetlands, with emphasis on the key processes of carbon turnover (including plant carbon fixation and soil respiration) and the microbial mechanisms involved. Most of the reviewed anthropogenic disturbances negatively affected carbon sequestration in the Yangtze River estuary wetlands, either by inhibiting plant growth (e.g., reclamation, siltation of high tidal flats, and hydraulic engineering projects) or by promoting organic carbon decomposition (e.g., reclamation, invasion of Spartina alterniflora , livestock grazing, tidal organic matter input, and eutrophication). By integrating the carbon input and output processes, we argue that reclamation, tidal organic matter input, and eutrophication weaken the carbon sink function of the Yangtze River estuary wetlands, and that some wetlands conservation measures are necessary considering the dual carbon target proposed by China in 2020.

Abstract:Climate change and anthropogenic activities such as dam construction alter basin-scale hydrological regime of a river. The upper Changjiang River (uCR) stands out as one of the most heavily dammed rivers in the world after the construction of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD) and other large dams in its mainstem. Quantification of the cumulative dam impact is prerequisite for better river management. In this work, we provide a rigorous appraisal of the changes in streamflow, sediment load, and sediment composition at multiple time scales throughout the uCR based on data in 1950–2017. We observed that a decreasing trend in annual streamflow has emerged since 2015 at Yichang, the outlet of the uCR basin, although the changes were statistically insignificant for the first 65 years. The annual sediment load has decreased progressively and substantially, e.g., by 97% in 2010s compared to 1950s at Yichang. The Three Gorges Dam and the new large dams in the upstream mainstem accelerated the sediment load reduction in 2003 and 2014, respectively. As a result, the suspended sediment became finer, with a decrease in mean diameter from 17 μm in the 1960s to 8 μm in the 2010s at Yichang. We established a reservoir storage capacity index, which is the ratio of the total reservoir storage capacity to annual streamflow, and identified a threshold of 4% larger than which the cumulative dam impact will induce profound sediment load reduction. We concluded that climate change and anthropogenic activities, in particular the large dams in the mainstem, have transformed the uCR system from a turbulent and muddy river to a placid one, which can affect fluvial processes as well as aquatic ecosystems by altering sediment and nutrient concentrations and ratios. These hydro-morphological changes merit the urgent attention of concerned authorities.

Abstract:The damming of rivers can significantly intercept carbon transportation and regulate dynamic biogeochemistry, which then greatly influence carbon gases (CO2 and CH4) metabolism and emissions. However, little is known about the spatial–temporal pattern and controls of carbon emissions from a cascaded river-reservoir system. In this study, we investigated the spatial and seasonal partial pressure of CO2 and CH4 (i.e. pCO2 and pCH4) dynamics along a subtropical cascaded dammed river (Wubu River) located in Southwest China. The pCO2 and pCH4 in the Wubu River basin showed significantly spatial–temporal and were generally supersaturated with gas fluxes of 89.5 ± 89.7 mmol CO2 m−2 d-1 and 1.19 ± 1.18 mmol CH4 m−2 d-1. The pCO2 and pCH4 were all increasing from upstream to downstream. And, most of river sections had significantly higher pCO2 and CO2 than their downstream reservoir sections, while the pCH4 and CH4 flux were the opposite. Meanwhile, released waters had invariably high pCO2 and pCH4 and were carbon gas emission hotspots in the river-reservoir system. The intercepts of carbon and nutrients by cascade damming, created a series of eutrophic hotspots and enhanced primary productivity, could inhibit riverine CO2 emissions but promote CH4 production. Thus, the spatial patterns of riverine pCO2, pCH4 and the “pCO2/pCH4” in cascade hydroelectric river were importantly altered. It was evaluated that cascade damming would reduce about 17.9 % of the total CO2 evasion amount but increase approximately 16.3 % of CH4. The global warming potential of rivers would be enhanced when organic carbon was captured and mineralized to CH4 rather than to CO2 in cascade damming river system. pH, dissolved oxygen and chlorophyll a (chl-a) were indicated as natural controls of pCO2 in such a cascade river-reservoir system, while dissolved organic carbon, dissolved organic carbon and chl-a were significantly correlated with pCH4 and acted as good predictors of CH4 emissions. The temperature and autotrophic production were responsible for the different seasonal patterns of carbon gas concentrations observed between river sections and reservoir sections. Our study highlighted that cascaded damming decreased CO2 emissions and created CH4 hotspots in river systems and may have significantly increased the complexity of the spatial–temporal pattern and construction of riverine carbon gases emissions. Given the increasing damming of rivers worldwide for energy demand, researches are needed to quantify the role of cascaded damming in the riverine C budget.

Abstract:Damming profoundly affects downstream flow‐sediment regimes, altering channel bar dynamics and thereby affecting floods and riverine biodiversity. Here, we investigate the response of bars to upstream damming by examining patterns, mechanisms, and impacts in the Middle Yangtze River (∼1,000 km). Over a decade of post‐damming observational data reveal substantial increases in bar revegetation and Leaf Area Index. Shorter flood duration and stable bar size collectively drive bar greening. Consequently, denser vegetation has slowed flow velocity by 17% ± 2% and increased flow resistance by 21% ± 5%, offsetting the water‐level decrease from channel expansion due to scouring and even causing a slight rise in floodwater levels. Furthermore, damming has markedly altered river connectivity, thermal regimes, and solute dynamics, detrimentally affecting fish habitats and aquatic life. These findings, along with refined river stage simulation considering flow‐sediment‐vegetation interactions, facilitate sustainable reservoir operation and river management in big river systems.

Abstract:Abstract Inland waters are significant emitters of greenhouse gases for the atmosphere and play an important role in the global carbon cycle. With a vast land area in East Asia spanning a broad range of climatic conditions, China has a large number of natural and human‐made water bodies. These inland water systems are of global importance because of their high carbon emission fluxes. Over the past decades, China has experienced unprecedented environmental changes driven by rapid economic development, which have profoundly modified its inland water carbon biogeochemistry and associated emissions. This review focuses on carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and methane (CH 4 ) emission dynamics from China's inland waters in response to global change. Major drivers of CO 2 and CH 4 emissions, including aquatic metabolism, hydrological and climatic factors, and prevailing human impacts, are examined. To advance our understanding of carbon emissions from China's inland waters, we further identify several critical knowledge gaps, such as inadequate research in headwater streams and the climate‐sensitive Tibetan Plateau aquatic ecosystems. Furthermore, insufficient understanding of carbon emissions from inland waters undergoing extensive human interventions (e.g., damming, flow regulation, pollution, and farming practices in aquaculture ponds) is highlighted. We suggest that future efforts should be made to better capture the spatiotemporal heterogeneity in dissolved CO 2 and CH 4 concentrations and fluxes across China as well as their long‐term trends. To overcome uncertainties in carbon sources and current flux estimates, future research to mechanistically understand carbon transport and transformation in Chinese inland waters and their underlying processes is particularly needed.

Abstract:Abstract Dams are often regarded as greenhouse gas (GHG) emitters. However, our study indicated that the world's largest dam, the Three Gorges Dam (TGD), has caused significant drops in annual average emissions of CO2, CH4 and N2O over 4300 km along the Yangtze River, accompanied by remarkable reductions in the annual export of CO2 (79%), CH4 (50%) and N2O (9%) to the sea. Since the commencement of its operation in 2003, the TGD has altered the carbonate equilibrium in the reservoir area, enhanced methanogenesis in the upstream, and restrained methanogenesis and denitrification via modifying anoxic habitats through long-distance scouring in the downstream. These findings suggest that ‘large-dam effects’ are far beyond our previous understanding spatiotemporally, which highlights the fundamental importance of whole-system budgeting of GHGs under the profound impacts of huge dams.

Abstract:Understanding how cold‐water and warm‐water fish cope with various stressors such as climate change and dam construction is crucial for the conservation of freshwater fish ecosystems. This study proposes to incorporate the information on dam impact implicitly existing in the species presence data in different periods to disentangle the impacts of hydroelectric dams and climate change on cold‐water and warm‐water fish habitat distribution in the upper Yangtze River basin. The loss of freshwater fish habitats, exacerbated by climate change and dam constructions, poses a critical environmental concern. The upper Yangtze River basin, noted for its abundant fish fauna and concentrated dam development, serves as a crucial locale for investigating the impacts of climate shifts and dam construction. This study aims to disentangle the impacts of hydroelectric dams and climate change on fish habitat distribution by analyzing species presence data across different periods. Species distribution models were constructed using Maxent for Coreius guichenoti (a warm‐water endangered fish) and Schizopygopsis malacanthus (a cold‐water endangered fish). The model accuracy was assessed using the area under the curve of the receiver operating characteristic. Habitat distribution modeling and prediction for the pre‐dam period (1970–2000) and post‐dam period (2001–2020), as well as future climate change under two shared socioeconomic pathways scenarios, were conducted. The impacts of climate change and dam construction on the habitat suitability of two fish species were quantified. The results revealed dam construction predominantly diminished habitat suitability and range, with high‐suitability habitats in the post‐dam period decreasing by 56.3% (720.18 km) and 67.0% (1665.52 km) for the two fishes, respectively. Climate change would enhance the habitat suitability of Coreius guichenoti, while it would decrease the habitat suitability of Schizopygopsis malacanthus. The impact of dam construction is greater that of climate change for them. This study underscores the profound impacts of dam construction on fish habitats, particularly for cold‐water species, and highlights the critical need for habitat restoration in sustainable hydropower development. Our method of disentangling these factors also provides a new approach to evaluating environmental impacts in large river basins.

Abstract:High-dam reservoirs can significantly affect nutrient cycling processes across the globe. However, the research community now has two contradictive views (i.e., retention versus transformation) about the impact of high-dam reservoirs on nutrient cycling due to incomplete information obtained from limited field samplings. To resolve this issue, we develop a physically-based, three-dimensional water quality model to examine the spatiotemporal distributions of biogenic elements (nitrogen and phosphorus) in high-dam reservoirs with high spatial and temporal details. We apply the model to the Xiaowan Reservoir, a representative high-dam reservoir in the Lancang River Basin. By scrutinizing the spatiotemporal distributions of biogenic elements across space and over time, we find a unique "retention-transformation-transportation" process of nitrogen and phosphorus in the high-dam reservoir, with dominant transformation occurring in the water zone before the dam during non-flood period while dominant retention occurring in the middle part of a reservoir during flood period. We further find that transformations of biogenic elements are enhanced only in low-temperature and low-oxygen environments. Our findings show solid scientific basis to resolve the contradictive views about nutrient cycling mechanisms in high-dam reservoirs, and provide important policy implications for the operation of high-dam reservoirs to achieve improved water quality while maintaining clean energy supply.

Abstract:Currently, there is a lack of systematic knowledge concerning carbon (C) biogeochemical cycles in impounded rivers. In this study, we investigated different C species and related environmental factors from July 2007 to June 2008 and from May 2011 to May 2012 in the impounded Wujiang River, SW China to understand the influence of dam construction on the riverine C cycle. The results showed that average concentrations of dissolved CO2, dissolved inorganic C (DIC), dissolved organic C, and particulate organic C (POC) were 81.73μmol/L, 2283.55μmol/L, 158.11μmol/L, and 37.54μmol/L, respectively. Meanwhile, δ13CDIC ranged from -10.07‰ to -4.92‰ with an average of -8.33‰, while δ13CPOC ranged from -35.30‰ to -22.28‰ with an average of -29.20‰. Thermal and chemical stratifications developed seasonally and exerted a significant influence on the C cycle of the released water. The C species and related δ13C showed remarkable heterogeneity in time and space. Evidence from δ13C demonstrated that the C system in this river was primarily influenced by carbonate weathering, whereas in the reservoir, it was primarily controlled by algal activity. The coefficients of variance for different C species in the reservoir and released water were higher than those in the river. Our study indicated that biological activity became a key controlling factor for the C biogeochemical cycle and accelerated it after damming, especially in the warm seasons. The results of this study have important implications for understanding the C cycle in elongated and deep reservoirs.
River damming enhances ecological functional stability of planktonic microorganisms

Abstract:Planktonic microorganisms play an important role in maintaining the ecological functions in aquatic ecosystems, but how their structure and function interrelate and respond to environmental changes is still not very clear. Damming interrupts the river continuum and alters river nutrient biogeochemical cycling and biological succession. Considering that river damming decreases the irregular hydrological fluctuation, we hypothesized that it can enhance the ecological functional stability (EFS) of planktonic microorganisms. Therefore, the community composition of planktonic bacteria and archaea, functional genes related to carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, and phosphorus cycling, and relevant environmental factors of four cascade reservoirs in the Pearl River, Southern China, were investigated to understand the impact of damming on microbial community structure and function and verify the above hypothesis. Here, the ratio of function to taxa (F:T) based on Euclidean distance matrix analysis was first proposed to characterize the microbial EFS; the smaller the ratio, the more stable the ecological functions. The results showed that the reservoirs created by river damming had seasonal thermal and chemical stratifications with an increasing hydraulic retention time, which significantly changed the microbial structure and function. The river microbial F:T was significantly higher than that of the reservoirs, indicating that river damming enhances the EFS of the planktonic microorganisms. Structural equation modeling demonstrated that water temperature was an important factor influencing the relationship between the microbial structure and function and thus affected their EFS. In addition, reservoir hydraulic load was found a main factor regulating the seasonal difference in microbial EFS among the reservoirs. This study will help to deepen the understanding of the relationship between microbial structure and function and provide a theoretical basis of assessing the ecological function change after the construction of river damming.

Internal transformation and damming regulate the longitudinal variation of DOM bioavailability in a large river

Abstract:Understanding the spatial patterns of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and factors that influence them is crucial for maintaining river ecosystem functions and riverine health, considering the significant role of DOM in water quality and aquatic ecosystems. Nevertheless, there is limited knowledge regarding the spatial variation of DOM bioavailability and the factors driving them in large river systems. This study involved 39 sampling locations along the main stem of the Changjiang River, spanning its entire length (>5000 km) during a dry season. Spatial patterns of DOM were assessed by measurements of DOC concentrations and eight fluorescence DOM indices, namely fluorescence index (FI-A and FI-B), Trytophan/Tyrosine, Humic A, Humic C, humification indices (HIX-A and HIX-B), and Freshness index (β/α). The results revealed that the water DOM in the main stem of the Changjiang River primarily originated from terrestrial sources. A decline in DOM bioavailability was observed from the upper to the lower basin, aligning with the carbon processing prediction rather than the river continuum concept (RCC). The pure effect of physicochemical factors (25.30%) was greater than that of geographic factors (9.40%). The internal transformation processes determined the significant longitudinal decreases of DOM bioavailability. While no significant difference in DOM bioavailability was observed between reaches before and after the dams, the construction of dams was found to improve DOM bioavailability at the subsection scale and reduce the spatial autocorrelation of DOM bioavailability across the entire basin.
The Changing Changjiang River Estuarine-Coastal Ocean Continuum in the Anthropocene

Abstract:The Changjiang River estuarine-coastal ocean continuum is a well-studied system that is undergoing significant changes due to human activities and climate change. While research has improved our understanding of its ecological importance, the changing external forces present challenges that require integrated knowledge. Here, we provide a comprehensive summary of the natural and man-made stresses on the continuum and identify knowledge gaps for future study. The construction of dams has led to a decrease of approximately 70 % in sediment loads from the Changjiang River, resulting in seabed erosion and a reduction in organic carbon and pollutant reservoirs in the continuum. In contrast, nutrient fluxes from the Changjiang River have shown increasing trends since the 1960 s, leading to changes in nutrient conditions and ecological processes in the continuum. These changes have altered the biomass and community structure of phytoplankton, leading to frequent harmful algal blooms and shifts in dominant species from diatoms to dinoflagellates. We also outline the impacts of coastal engineering and wetland reclamation, which have altered coastal geography, destroyed wildlife habitats, and weakened the filtering effect on pollutants. Additionally, ocean warming has increased threats to the ecosystem, exacerbating harmful algal blooms and facilitating the release of semi-volatile pollutants. In our review of the ecological processes in the continuum, we categorize the changes into three stages: the 1950 s to mid-1980 s (initial state), mid-1980 s to early 2000 s (ecosystem destruction begins), and early 2000 s to the present (critical transition in the continuum). Future research should focus on understanding the ecological responses to these changing processes in the estuarine-coastal ocean continuum. As other continuum ecosystems worldwide may be at different stages, studying the response of the Changjiang River estuarine-coastal ocean continuum will provide a comprehensive case study.
Impact of artificial floods on the quantity and grain size of river‐borne sediment: A case study of a dam regulation scheme in the Yellow River catchment

Abstract:The quantity and grain size of river‐borne sediment are critical to geomorphological evolution and ecosystem health of river deltas. Compared to quantitative aspects of fluvial systems, however, studies describing the physical properties of river sediment are still quite limited. This work examines how an unprecedented engineering effort (the Water‐Sediment Regulation Scheme, WSRS) within the lower Yellow River system has caused important changes in the volume and grain size patterns of transported sediment. After the implementation of the WSRS, artificial floods dominated the delivery of water and sediment to the delta region – the natural (seasonal) rhythm of the hydrological cycle has been replaced by impulsive delivery. Compared to natural floods, the duration of the artificial flood due to WSRS is substantially shortened, and timing has changed to early summer (June to July), which is two to three months ahead of the usual flood season. Now, as a result of WSRS, there are high sediment loads over a shorter than usual time frame. The Yellow River's sediment load rebounded and coarsened, because artificial floods have strongly scoured the river channel. These changes turned the Yellow River delta from a recession phase to one of progradation, and caused impulsive delivery and rapidly buried of terrestrial organic carbon and pollutants. For other rivers worldwide, the lower Yellow River system provides an illustrative example of how transporting coarse‐grained sediment, otherwise deposited on river bed, may be used to mitigate coastal land loss on intra‐decadal time scales, however with the potential for adverse ecological impacts.
