Abstract:Integrated circuits and electronic systems, as well as design technologies, are evolving at a great rate -- both quantitatively and qualitatively. Major developments include new interconnects and switching devices with atomic-scale uncertainty, the depth and scale of on-chip integration, electronic system-level integration, the increasing significance of software, as well as more effective means of design entry, compilation, algorithmic optimization, numerical simulation, pre- and post-silicon design validation, and chip test. Application targets and key markets are also shifting substantially from desktop CPUs to mobile platforms to an Internet-of-Things infrastructure. In light of these changes in electronic design contexts and given EDA's significant dependence on such context, the EDA community must adapt to these changes and focus on the opportunities for research and commercial success. The CCC workshop series on Extreme-Scale Design Automation, organized with the support of ACM SIGDA, studied challenges faced by the EDA community as well as new and exciting opportunities currently available. This document represents a summary of the findings from these meetings.

Abstract:This volume contains the papers presented at the 22nd International Overture Workshop, held on the 10th of September 2024. This event was the latest in a series of workshops around the Vienna Development Method (VDM), the open-source project Overture, and related tools and formalisms. VDM is one of the longest established formal methods for systems development. A lively community of researchers and practitioners has grown up in academia and industry has grown around the modelling languages (VDM-SL, VDM++, VDM-RT, CML) and tools (VDMTools, Overture, Crescendo, Symphony, the INTO-CPS chain, and ViennaTalk). Together, these provide a platform for work on modelling and analysis technology that includes static and dynamic analysis, test generation, execution support, and model checking. This workshop provided updates on the emerging technology of VDM/Overture, including collaboration infrastructure, collaborative modelling and co-simulation for Cyber-Physical Systems.

Abstract:We describe the planned Alpha release of OpenROAD, an open-source end-to-end silicon compiler. OpenROAD will help realize the goal of "democratization of hardware design", by reducing cost, expertise, schedule and risk barriers that confront system designers today. The development of open-source, self-driving design tools is in and of itself a "moon shot" with numerous technical and cultural challenges. The open-source flow incorporates a compatible open-source set of tools that span logic synthesis, floorplanning, placement, clock tree synthesis, global routing and detailed routing. The flow also incorporates analysis and support tools for static timing analysis, parasitic extraction, power integrity analysis, and cloud deployment. We also note several observed challenges, or "lessons learned", with respect to development of open-source EDA tools and flows.
PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT IN OPEN DESIGN COMMUNITIES: A PROCESS PERSPECTIVE

Abstract:Open source (OS) has raised significant attention in industrial practice and in scholarly research as a new and successful mode of product development. This paper is among the first to study open source development processes outside their original context, the software industry. In particular, we investigate the development of tangible products in so-called open design projects. We study how open design projects address the challenges usually put forward in the literature as barriers to the open development of tangible products. The analysis rests on the comparative qualitative investigation of four cases from different industries. We find that, subject to certain contingencies, open design processes can be organized to resemble OSS development processes to a considerable degree. Some practices are established specifically to uphold OS principles in the open design context, while others starkly differ from those found in OSS development. Our discussion focusses on different aspects of modularity as well as the availability of low-cost tools.

An Open Distributed Architecture for Flexible Hybrid Assembly Systems: A Model Driven Engineering Approach

Abstract:Assembly systems constitute one of the most important fields in today industry. In this paper we propose an open distributed architecture for the engineering of evolvable flexible hybrid assembly systems. The proposed architecture is based on the model driven development paradigm. Models are used to represent structure and behavior and a domain specific engineering tool is defined to facilitate the assembly system engineer in the engineering process of the assembly system. Specific meta models are defined to capture domain knowledge to guide the engineer in the construction of the models required to construct the assembly system. This work is a specialization of our previous work that defined a SOA based framework for embedded industrial automation systems. It adapts and extends, in the assembly systems domain, the 3+1 SysML-view model architecture defined for the engineering of mechatronics Manufacturing systems. The proposed architecture can be used to develop a framework for evolvable flexible and reconfigurable assembly systems that would exploit the benefits the Cyber Physical paradigm utilizing web technologies, the IoT, the Cloud computing and Big Data.

Abstract:There are growing demands of new architecture for creating the next generation of distributed control systems for industrial automation. The architectural requirements of open distributed automation (ODA) are identified. To meet these requirements, a suitable architecture for open automation application in modular distributed structures is presented, along with an application model. The function block (FB) approach proposed by the IEC 61499 standard is introduced into the ODA architecture. Essential implementation issues for the proposed architecture are dealt with, with special stress on open interfaces and device management. The proposed architecture can be used to assist control engineers in the development and configuration of ODA applications, while promising to improve productivity in terms of portability, configurability and interoperability by exploiting the many benefits of FB concept.

Abstract:This volume contains the proceedings of F-IDE 2018, the fourth international workshop on Formal Integrated Development Environment, which was held as a FLoC 2018 satellite event, on July 14, 2018, in Oxford, England. High levels of safety, security and also privacy standards require the use of formal methods to specify and develop compliant software (sub)systems. Any standard comes with an assessment process, which requires a complete documentation of the application in order to ease the justification of design choices and the review of code and proofs. Thus tools are needed for handling specifications, program constructs and verification artifacts. The aim of the F-IDE workshop is to provide a forum for presenting and discussing research efforts as well as experience returns on design, development and usage of formal IDE aiming at making formal methods "easier" for both specialists and non-specialists.

Abstract:In April 2016, a community of researchers working in the area of Principles of Data Management (PDM) joined in the Dagstuhl Castle in Germany for a workshop organized jointly by the Executive Committee of the ACM Symposium on Principles of Database Systems (PODS) and the Council of the International Conference on Database Theory (ICDT). The mission of this workshop was to identify and explore some of the most important research directions that have high relevance to society and to Computer Science today, and where the PDM community has the potential to make significant contributions. This report describes the family of research directions that the workshop focused on from three perspectives: potential practical relevance, results already obtained, and research questions that appear surmountable in the short and medium term. Abstract:The goal of the DSLDI workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners interested in sharing ideas on how DSLs should be designed, implemented, supported by tools, and applied in realistic application contexts. We are both interested in discovering how already known domains such as graph processing or machine learning can be best supported by DSLs, but also in exploring new domains that could be targeted by DSLs. More generally, we are interested in building a community that can drive forward the development of modern DSLs. These informal post-proceedings contain the submitted talk abstracts to the 3rd DSLDI workshop (DSLDI'15), and a summary of the panel discussion on Language Composition.

Abstract:The International Workshop on Scientific Knowledge: Representation, Discovery, and Assessment (Sci-K 2023) is now running its third edition. The Sci-K workshop is a venue that brings together researchers and practitioners from different disciplines (including, but not limited to, Digital Libraries, Information Extraction, Machine Learning, Semantic Web, Knowledge Engineering, Natural Language Processing, Scholarly Communication, Science of Science, Scientometrics and Bibliometrics), as well as professionals from the industry, to explore innovative solutions and ideas for the production and consumption of Scientific Knowledge Graphs and assessing the research impact. The workshop has called for high-quality submissions around the three main themes of research, related to scientific knowledge: representation, discovery, and assessment. In response to the call for papers, the workshop has received outstanding submissions from researchers in 15 different countries: United States of America, Germany, United Kingdom, Ireland, Sweden, Canada, India, Brazil, Australia, Italy, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Denmark, Ethiopia, and Norway. Each paper was reviewed at least by three members of the programme committee. Given the quality and the interesting topics covered by the submissions, we accepted 10 papers. Sci-K 2023 builds on two previous successful editions and keeps attracting a combined pool of attendees. The first edition (Sci-K 2021), was held on 13 April 2021 in conjunction with The Web Conference 2021. Its program consisted of two keynote talks, and the presentation of 11 research papers. The second edition (Sci-K 2022) took place on the 26 April 2022 at The Web Conference 2022. The program included the presentation of 5 long papers, 4 short papers, 2 vision papers, 2 keynote speeches and a panel on “What’s next after Microsoft Academic Graph?”. Abstract:By leveraging the power of open-source software, the EDA tool offers a cost-effective and flexible solution for designers, researchers, and hobbyists alike. Open-source EDA promotes collaboration, innovation, and knowledge sharing within the EDA community. It emphasizes the role of the toolchain in accelerating the development of electronic systems, reducing design costs, and improving design quality. This paper presents an open-source EDA project, iEDA, aiming to build a basic infrastructure for EDA technology evolution and closing the industrial-academic gap in the EDA area. As the foundation for developing EDA tools and researching EDA algorithms and technologies, iEDA is mainly composed of file system, database, manager, operator and interface. To demonstrate the effectiveness of iEDA, we implement and tape out four chips of different scales (from 700k to 500M gates) on different process nodes (110nm and 28nm) with iEDA. iEDA is publicly available on the project home page https://github.com/OSCC-Project/iEDA.

Abstract:This volume contains all papers presented at the 11th Annual ACM DRM Workshop 2011, sponsored by the ACM SIGSAC and held in conjunction with the 18th ACM Conference on Computer and Communications Security (CSS) in Chicago, USA. The full-day workshop consisted of informal discussions, invited talks and peer-reviewed technical talks describing recent research contributions to the area of Digital Rights Management. As in previous years, the DRM workshop provided an interdisciplinary bridge between different research areas that span the landscape of DRM, including cryptography, system security, law and economy. This year we were delighted to have two invited talks, one covering legal aspects of DRM, given by Bruce Boyden from the Marquette University Law School, and one covering technical aspects, given by Brendan Traw from Intel. In addition, the DRM workshop featured two sessions containing technical contributions on novel DRM applications and on technological foundations. We hope that you will find this program interesting and that the workshop will provide you with opportunities to share ideas with other researchers and practitioners from institutions around the world.

Abstract:The ‘open approach’ is rooted in the open-source and free-software movements. Its application has spread to more fields than computer engineering. Product design is impacted as well: we observe new stakeholders and practices challenging current structured design processes and leading to industrial successes. Open-design appears to be promising yet disruptive. Moreover, its distinctive features remain unclear. This paper aims to popularize this new concept, as well as to give both researchers and practitioners an overview of current research on open-design, and its consequences on design. For this, we conducted a systematic quantitative bibliometric analysis of 624 entries corresponding to the keyword ‘open-design’ in the Scopus database. This supports a qualitative synthesis of scientific literature, enabling us to summarize practices falling under the umbrella term ‘open-design’. As such, this paper traces the evolution of product design and the open approach. It also analyzes the impact of open-design on the design process as presented in the scientific literature. Finally, this paper develops a typology of open-design of tangible artifacts that distinguishes among three currently reported varieties of practice: do-it-yourself , meta-design , and industrial ecosystems . As the major contribution of this paper, this typology is developed as a final discussion.
