Abstract:Gomoku, also known as five in a row, is a classical board game, ideally suited for quickly testing novel Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques. With the aim of facilitating a developer willing to write a new Gomoku player, in this report we present an analysis of the main game concepts and strategies, which is wider and deeper than existing ones. Moreover, after discussing the general structure of an artificial player, we present and analyse a strong Gomoku player, named Wine, the code of which is freely available on the Internet and which is an excelent example of how a modern player is organised.

Abstract:<p>In the spirit of "multi-culturalism", we use four kinds of computations: simulation, numeric, symbolic, and "conceptual", to explore some "games of pure chance" inspired by children board games like "Snakes and Ladders" (aka "Chutes and Ladders") and "gambler's ruin with unlimited credit". Even more interesting than the many computer-generated specific results described in this paper and its web-site extension, is our broad-minded, ecumenical approach, not favoring, a priori, any one of the above four kinds of computation, but showing that, a posteriori, symbolic computation is the most important one, since (except for simulation) numerics can be made more efficient with the help of symbolics (in the "downward" direction), and, (in the "upward" direction) the mere existence of certain symbolic-computational algorithms imply interesting "qualitative" results, that certain numbers are always rational, or always algebraic, and certain sequences are always polynomial, or C-recursive, or algebraic, or holonomic. This article is accompanied by four Maple packages, and numerous input and output files, that readers can use as templates for their own investigations.</p>

Abstract:Individuals interact with algorithms in various ways. Users even game and circumvent algorithms so as to achieve favorable outcomes. This study aims to come to an understanding of how various stakeholders interact with each other in tricking algorithms, with a focus towards online review communities. We employed a mixed-method approach in order to explore how and why users write machine non-translatable reviews as well as how those encrypted messages are perceived by those receiving them. We found that users are able to find tactics to trick the algorithms in order to avoid censoring, to mitigate interpersonal burden, to protect privacy, and to provide authentic information for enabling the formation of informative review communities. They apply several linguistic and social strategies in this regard. Furthermore, users perceive encrypted messages as both more trustworthy and authentic. Based on these findings, we discuss implications for online review community and content moderation algorithms.
Unraveling Go gaming nature by Ising Hamiltonian and common fate graphs: tactics and statistics

Abstract:Go gaming is a struggle between adversaries, black and white simple stones, and aim to control the most Go board territory for success. Rules are simple but Go game fighting is highly intricate. Stones placement and interaction on board is random-appearance, likewise interaction phenomena among basic elements in physics thermodynamics, chemistry, biology, or social issues. We model the Go game dynamic employing an Ising model energy function, whose interaction coefficients reflect the application of rules and tactics to build long-term strategies. At any step of the game, the energy function of the model assesses the control and strength of a player over the board. A close fit between predictions of the model with actual game's scores is obtained. AlphaGo computer is the current top Go player, but its behavior does not wholly reveal the Go gaming nature. The Ising function allows for precisely model the stochastic evolutions of Go gaming patterns, so, to advance the understanding on Go own-dynamic -beyond the player`s abilities. The analysis of the frequency and combination of tactics shows the formation of patterns in the groups of stones during a game, regarding the turn of each player, or if human or computer adversaries are confronted.

Insights from a workshop on gamification of research in mathematics and computer science

Abstract:Can outreach inspire and lead to research and vice versa? In this work, we introduce our approach to the gamification of research in mathematics and computer science through three illustrative examples. We discuss our primary motivations and provide insights into what makes our proposed gamification effective for three research topics in discrete and computational geometry and topology: (1) DominatriX, an art gallery problem involving polyominoes with rooks and queens; (2) Cubical Sliding Puzzles, an exploration of the discrete configuration spaces of sliding puzzles on the $d$-cube with topological obstructions; and (3) The Fence Challenge, a participatory isoperimetric problem based on polyforms. Additionally, we report on the collaborative development of the game Le Carré du Diable, inspired by The Fence Challenge and created during the workshop Let's talk about outreach!, held in October 2022 in Les Diablerets, Switzerland. All of our outreach encounters and creations are designed and curated with an inclusive culture and a strong commitment to welcoming the most diverse audience possible.

Al-Jabar: A Mathematical Game of Strategy

Abstract:We detail the rules and mathematical structure of Al-Jabar, a game invented by the authors based on intuitive concepts of color-mixing and ideas from abstract algebra. Game-play consists of manipulating colored game pieces; we discuss how these colored pieces form a group structure and how this structure, along with an operation used to combine the pieces, is used to create a game of strategy. We also consider extensions of the game rules to other group structures. Note: While this is an article for general readership originally published online by Gathering for Gardner in honor of Martin Gardner's birthday (Oct. 2011), Al-Jabar has been played in university abstract algebra courses as a teaching tool, as well as by game enthusiasts, since its release. Moreover, the algebraic game structure described has sparked further work by other mathematicians and game designers. Thus, we submit this article to the ArXiV as a resource for educators as well as those interested in mathematical games.

A Framework for Exploring and Evaluating Mechanics in Human Computation Games

Abstract:Human computation games (HCGs) are a crowdsourcing approach to solving computationally-intractable tasks using games. In this paper, we describe the need for generalizable HCG design knowledge that accommodates the needs of both players and tasks. We propose a formal representation of the mechanics in HCGs, providing a structural breakdown to visualize, compare, and explore the space of HCG mechanics. We present a methodology based on small-scale design experiments using fixed tasks while varying game elements to observe effects on both the player experience and the human computation task completion. Finally we discuss applications of our framework using comparisons of prior HCGs and recent design experiments. Ultimately, we wish to enable easier exploration and development of HCGs, helping these games provide meaningful player experiences while solving difficult problems.

Abstract:Game extension is an entertaining activity that offers an opportunity to test new design approaches by non-programmers. The real challenge is to enable this activity by means of a suitable infrastructure. We propose a knowledge-driven approach with natural game-player concepts. These concepts, found in game ontologies, include game abstractions and rules for game moves. The approach has been implemented and tested for board games. These include tic-tac-toe as a simplest example, enabling extensions of tic-tac- toe, say to a four-by-four board and Sudoku, a single player game of a very different nature.

Abstract:Data structures and algorithms (DSA) are fundamental concepts introduced in the early stages of any undergraduate computing degree. Many students find DSA concepts challenging to learn, partly due to their abstract nature but also due to issues of low motivation. We examine these and other common difficulties faced by educators teaching DSA, and present a novel solution which combines a game-based learning approach with the use of engaging visualizations of algorithms in 2.5D. Game-based learning and algorithm visualizations are often employed in existing educational tools, but are rarely combined. Our game, DeCode, presents DSA concepts as in-game objects and animations within a 2.5D game-based world alongside traditional game-like mechanics such as progression. Feedback from an initial pilot study (n=51) suggests that students regard DeCode as an enjoyable and effective tool for learning DSA concepts. We also find evidence that DeCode's visualizations help students find efficient solutions to problems that have received prior attention in the literature, such as shifting all of the elements in an array.

Abstract:One of the key foundations in computer science is abstract algebra. Ideas of abstract algebra can be introduced to students at middle or pre-college schools to cultivate their capacity for logical thinking and problem-solving skills as well as gaining mathematical competency required in computer science. In this book chapter, we introduce ideas of mathematics gamification and a mobile app game, Algebra Game, richly rooted in abstract algebra and first proposed by the mathematician Tao (Gamifying algebra, 2012a, Software mock-up of algebra game 2012b). The Algebra Game teaches elementary algebra seemingly on the surface, and yet the game-play design possesses interesting abstract algebra ideas and mathematics gamification potential. We define mathematics gamification as the process of embedding mathematical concepts and their logical manipulations in a puzzle game-like setting aided by computers. We describe several mathematics gamification instances to enrich the Algebra Game play. Finally, we evaluate the learning efficacy of the Algebra Game mobile app software in computer science game tournaments modeled after eSports-like computer games in order to scale up the number of students who can learn the Algebra Game mathematics.

The application of genetic algorithms in games is discussed, and based on reading relevant references, the design of the algorithm is explained in detail; the current situation of combining algorithms with games is analyzed; the novelty of combining algorithms with games is explained; and the paper concludes with a summary of the considerations and the scope of application of using genetic algorithms in games. The aim of the study is to reduce the cost of consultation and understanding for game makers and researchers, allowing them to focus on the specific application of genetic algorithms in games to make the AI of the game evolvable and intelligent to the level of the players.

Abstract:Significance Theoretical biology was founded on the mathematical tools of statistics and physics. We believe there are productive connections to be made with the younger field of theoretical computer science, which shares with it an interest in complexity and functionality. In this paper, we find that the mathematical description of evolution in the presence of sexual recombination and weak selection is equivalent to a repeated game between genes played according to the multiplicative weight updates algorithm, an algorithm that has surprised computer scientists time and again in its usefulness. This equivalence is informative for the pursuit of two key problems in evolution: the role of sex and the maintenance of variation.

Abstract:To date, it is a challenge for teachers to maintain the motivation of students in understanding the course of computational algorithms. For this reason it was sought that the student learn by playing, imparting knowledge through the language they best handle and using the technology that young people currently use without complications. This article seeks to determine the influence of gamification in the learning of the subject of Algorithms I of the University of Sciences and Humanities in the 2019-01 semester through an applied research, of a quasi-experimental type. The analysis of data was performed through the U test of Mann Whitney determining that there are significant differences between the study groups. The use of the gamificación methodology decreased the dropout rate in the course, improved the cognitive results and student motivation during the study sessions.
Squid Game Optimizer (SGO): a novel metaheuristic algorithm

Abstract:In this paper, Squid Game Optimizer (SGO) is proposed as a novel metaheuristic algorithm inspired by the primary rules of a traditional Korean game. Squid game is a multiplayer game with two primary objectives: attackers aim to complete their goal while teams try to eliminate each other, and it is usually played on large, open fields with no set guidelines for size and dimensions. The playfield for this game is often shaped like a squid and, according to historical context, appears to be around half the size of a standard basketball court. The mathematical model of this algorithm is developed based on a population of solution candidates with a random initialization process in the first stage. The solution candidates are divided into two groups of offensive and defensive players while the offensive player goes among the defensive players to start a fight which is modeled through a random movement toward the defensive players. By considering the winning states of the players of both sides which is calculated based on the objective function, the position updating process is conducted and the new position vectors are produced. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed SGO algorithm, 25 unconstrained mathematical test functions with 100 dimensions are used, alongside six other commonly used metaheuristics for comparison. 100 independent optimization runs are conducted for both SGO and the other algorithms with a pre-determined stopping condition to ensure statistical significance of the results. Statistical metrics such as mean, standard deviation, and mean of required objective function evaluations are calculated. To provide a more comprehensive analysis, four prominent statistical tests including the Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Mann-Whitney, and Kruskal-Wallis tests are used. Meanwhile, the ability of the suggested SGOA is assessed through the cutting-edge real-world problems on the newest CEC like CEC 2020, while the SGO demonstrate outstanding performance in dealing with these complex optimization problems. The overall assessment of the SGO indicates that the proposed algorithm can provide competitive and remarkable outcomes in both benchmark and real-world problems.

Abstract:Genetic programming is the practice of evolving formulas using crossover and mutation of genes representing functional operations. Motivated by genetic evolution we develop and solve two combinatorial games, and we demonstrate some advantages and pitfalls of using genetic programming to investigate Grundy values. We conclude by investigating a combinatorial game whose ruleset and starting positions are inspired by genetic structures.

Abstract:Abstract A game usually used as a synonym for entertainment also serves as an educational tool. Originally targeting the enjoyment, the meaning of the game has evolved to much greater conceptions and applications. Games require physical or mental or sometimes both the simulation. Many games help develop practical skills, serve as a form of exercise, or otherwise perform an educational, simulation, or psychological role. Having to be built on some key elements, which are goals, rules, challenge, and interaction. Various strategies and algorithms such as path finding and decision trees, have been developed to simulate those interactions between the human user and the computer in front of him. In video games, artificial intelligence (AI) is used to generate responsive, adaptive or intelligent behaviours primarily in non-player characters (NPCs) similar to human-like intelligence. This paper makes a short analysis of those preferred techniques and suggest from the study and the outcomes, the efficiency of each. The paper also focuses on the heuristic function, implementation platforms and design guidelines of the various searching algorithms used in adaptive games.

Abstract:We research a combinatorial game based on the Cookie Monster problem called the Cookie Monster game that generalizes the games of Nim and Wythoff. We also propose several combinatorial games that are in between the Cookie Monster game and Nim. We discuss properties of P-positions of all of these games. Each section consists of two parts. The first part is a story presented from the Cookie Monster's point of view, the second part is a more abstract discussion of the same ideas by the authors.

Abstract:We develop a generic computational model that can be used effectively for establishing the existence of winning strategies for concrete finite combinatorial games. Our modelling is (equational) logic-based involving advanced techniques from algebraic specification, and it can be executed by equational programming systems such as those from the OBJ-family. We show how this provides a form of experimental mathematics for strategy problems involving combinatorial games.

Abstract:The widespread availability of superhuman AI engines is changing how we play the ancient game of Go. The open-source software packages developed after the AlphaGo series shifted focus from producing strong playing entities to providing tools for analyzing games. Here we describe two ways of how the innovations of the second generation engines (e.g.~score estimates, variable komi) can be used for defining new metrics that help deepen our understanding of the game. First, we study how much information the search component contributes in addition to the raw neural network policy output. This gives an intrinsic strength measurement for the neural network. Second, we define the effect of a move by the difference in score estimates. This gives a fine-grained, move-by-move performance evaluation of a player. We use this in combating the new challenge of detecting online cheating.
