Abstract:In reusable launch vehicles, feedback pressurization is a promising type of pressurized discharge to control the pressure in the propellant tank. In this study, a numerical model was developed to simulate the pressurized discharge process of cryogenic fluids, where the gaseous helium is intermittently injected to control the pressure in the ullage. The phase change model, complete species transfer model, and turbulence model were incorporated to predict the temperature and concentration distributions. The results show that the intermittent injection of helium causes fluctuations in both temperature and concentration in the ullage due to the motion of the vortex. The effect of diffusion in species transfer mainly occurs at the boundaries of the vortex, while the effect of convection is dominant throughout the region of the vortex. In depressurization period, the pressurization rate is primarily influenced by changes in enthalpy and volume in the ullage. In repressurization period, the term induced by physical property changes resulting from the mixing of oxygen and helium can contribute to up to 53.6 % of pressurization rate. As the helium mass flow rate decreases, the total helium consumption first decreases and then increases. The present study is significant for the understanding of the feedback pressurization and could provide recommendations for the design and optimization of pressurization systems for cryogenic propellants.
