Abstract:Growing environmental concerns and the threat of resource scarcity have heightened interest in the Circular Economy (CE) concept over the last decade. Nonetheless, implementation of CE practice within the built environment has taken a slower pace in comparison with other industries. A clear understanding of systemic and multilevel aspects of CE, especially in relation to barriers that hinder practical implementation, appears to be lacking within the sector. In light of this, the study aims to examine the existing body of knowledge to elucidate, from a systemic perspective, CE barriers across various levels in construction. To achieve this purpose, a scientometric analysis is used to examine 581 bibliometric-searched filtered articles on CE implementation barriers in construction. Key issues, drivers and potential resolutions are explained using content analysis of specific pre-determined articles. The study finds that critical system levels of CE implementation (micro, meso, and macro levels) are interrelated. However, barriers and drivers at each individual level may differ. Additionally, this paper categorises key barriers to implementing CE-aligned strategies into five main themes, namely: definition and theory misconception, political and legislative, social and cultural, financial and economic, and technological barriers. Based on these, four cross-cutting enablers are established to drive the transition from linear to circular economy in construction. The findings of this study highlight deficiencies and challenges in current research while providing a path for future studies. It provides a convenient point of reference for practitioners, policy makers, and research and development (R&D) institutions on CE implementation within the industry. Lastly, the study raises public awareness on CE barriers and guides the AEC sector to develop intellectual capital to overcome them.

Abstract:The construction sector has a significant impact on the environment, contributing significantly to energy consumption, resource depletion, and CO2 emissions. This sector is currently shifting away from natural materials and cement in favor of alternative materials, thereby reducing environmental impact and promoting sustainability. Worldwide, enormous quantities of waste materials are generated. Most of these waste materials are hazardous, corrosive, flammable, chemically reactive, incendiary, and infectious and are typically disposed of in landfills, causing environmental pollution and posing health risks. As a result, incorporating waste materials into concrete would be a more prudent course of action. This study collected vast bibliometric data comprising journal articles and review articles from the Scopus database over the last two decades and conducted a scientometric review on waste material utilization in concrete. Scientometric analysis is used to determine the current state of research by analyzing available bibliometric data and identifying related publication areas, sources with the most publications, the most frequently occurring keywords, authors, and papers with the most citations, and states that have made the greatest contribution to the field of waste materials utilization in concrete. Moreover, the most active research areas are identified and discussed. Also, the sustainability aspects of recycling waste materials in concrete are discussed, and finally, future research is proposed. The scientometric review will enable scholars from diverse countries to exchange novel ideas and knowledge, foster research collaboration, and establish joint ventures.

Abstract:Infrastructure is the basic human need in this modern world; however, the development of infrastructure is also associated with some detrimental impacts to the global environment. This is because of the use of some environment un-friendly materials in its construction e.g., Portland cement concrete (PCC). According to the studies, it is responsible for the emission of hazardous carbon dioxide (CO2) and the consumption of some of the non-renewable natural resources of earth as its raw materials. Therefore, it is high time that world must shift towards some eco-friendly materials in the construction industry. Researchers have revealed such a material i.e., geopolymer concrete (GPC) that can provide an effective solution to this problem. It not only reduces the CO2 emissions but also provides sustainable solution to the quickly depleting natural resources of earth. However, it is relatively a new material with very limited information being available about its behaviour. Although numerous research studies have been carried out in the past to explore GPC, but they are still not enough to make it an industrial material. This review aims to provide critical assessment of the mechanical and structural performance of GPC by conducting the scientometric analysis of its existing literature as it provides more representative, comprehensive, and reliable results that are not affected by the one’s insight. It is also aimed to provide future researchers with a clear research gap working on which GPC can be made capable of being adopted by the construction industry. On the basis of scientometric and conventional review results, it was concluded that GPC can be considered as a possible potential alternate to the PCC possessing either similar or better structural and mechanical properties. Based on the review analysis, future researchers are recommended to focus more on the long-term characteristics of GPC.

Abstract:The growing production of concrete is prompting concerns about the sustainability of the construction sector. Therefore, the mitigation of the environmental footprints of concrete as a widely used construction material has become a focus of research. Nonetheless, the growing demand for concrete production and the breadth of its energy efficiency throughout embodied and operating phases pose challenges in tracking energy performance. This study offers a systematic review of the existing body of knowledge regarding the energy efficiency of concrete by analysing bibliometric data from Scopus spanning 2000 to 2022 targeting the entire life cycle of concrete. Quantitative and meta-analysis were conducted, presenting statistical data on the frequency and origin of documents, institutions, and publication sources. Further, the most frequently used keywords were classified into four clusters, followed by a detailed manual review of commonly adopted approaches for increasing the energy efficiency of concrete derived from the systematic review. Reviewing a comprehensive dataset, this study explored and discussed sustainable practices crucial for formulating energy-efficient concrete. The findings provided valuable insights into monitoring the energy performance of concrete considering embodied and operating phases. Additionally, the review highlighted a connection between automation technologies and sustainable construction. The identified results and suggested sustainable solutions can potentially guide academia and industry towards current and future directions concerning the energy efficiency of concrete.

Abstract:Construction material industries, including the concrete sector, drive a huge demand for aggregates, including sand, one of the most widely consumed resources globally. Emerging advocacy campaigns on sand sustainability frame less aggregate intensive "ecological" or "green" concrete materials as solutions to mitigate the socio-environmental impacts emerging from sand consumption. This scoping literature review considers how the benefits from green concrete are portrayed in the construction material-centered academic literature. The scholarship reviewed highlights that conventional concrete materials generate environmental problems that green concrete products could help to mitigate, most notably CO 2 emissions. Much less emphasis is placed on sand requirements, while the scholarship approaches sand sustainability very vaguely. We conclude that such caveats pose important challenges to the enactment of sounder sand policy. If the sand crisis is to be addressed, we advocate for the sand advocacy and green concrete epistemic communities to better align how they promote wider systemic change.

Abstract:The scientometric analysis is statistical scrutiny of books, papers, and other publications to assess the "output" of individuals/research teams, organizations, and nations, to identify national and worldwide networks, and to map the creation of new (multi-disciplinary) scientific and technological fields that would be beneficial for the new researchers in the particular field. A scientometric review of 3D printing concrete is carried out in this study to explore the different literature aspects. There are limitations in conventional and typical review studies regarding the capacity of such studies to link various elements of the literature accurately and comprehensively. Some major problematic phases in advanced level research are: co-occurrence, science mapping, and co-citation. The sources with maximum articles, the highly creative researchers/authors known for citations and publications, keywords co-occurrences, and actively involved domains in 3D printing concrete research are explored during the analysis. VOS viewer application analyses bibliometric datasets with 953 research publications were extracted from the Scopus database. The current study would benefit academics for joint venture development and sharing new strategies and ideas due to the graphical and statistical depiction of contributing regions/countries and researchers.

Abstract:The construction industry significantly impacts the environment. This review article explores various strategies and advancements in sustainable concrete construction, focusing on environmentally friendly concrete constituents, novel construction approaches, and sustainable material selection practices. The article discusses the benefits and potential of green concrete, permeable concrete, cool concrete, Ultra-High-Performance Concrete (UHPC), and the integration of local aggregates. Novel approaches like Insulated Concrete Forms (ICFs), photocatalytic concrete, 3D-printed concrete, and self-healing concrete are examined for their potential to revolutionize construction practices. Furthermore, the article explores the utilization of low-carbon concrete mixes with supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). Challenges and considerations associated with sustainable concrete construction are also addressed, including the need for continued research, complex design considerations, economic barriers, and the importance of awareness within the industry. Finally, the article provides recommendations for future advancements, including research and development efforts, standardized practices, economic incentives, and collaborative initiatives to overcome regulatory hurdles. By implementing these recommendations, the construction industry can leverage the full potential of sustainable concrete construction for a more environmentally friendly and resilient future.

Abstract:This paper presents a comprehensive review of current trends and opportunities for sustainable concrete construction, emphasizing the importance of adopting eco-friendly practices to mitigate the industry's environmental impact. Green concrete, supplementary cementitious materials, permeable concrete, cool concrete, and the use of local materials are explored as sustainable materials and technologies. Innovations like self-healing concrete, 3D-printed concrete, photocatalytic concrete, electrified machineries, and carbon capture, utilization, and storage principles are also discussed, highlighting their potential to improve the sustainability of construction practices. Challenges faced in implementing sustainable concrete construction practices, such as technical, economic, and social barriers, are also addressed. The roles of governments, industry, and academia in promoting sustainable concrete construction are examined, stressing the need for interdisciplinary collaboration and research. Lastly, emerging trends and technologies, including digitalization, data-driven approaches, and circular economy principles, are identified as critical factors in driving the transition towards sustainable concrete construction.

Abstract:Several review studies have been performed on nano-silica-modified concrete, but this study adopted a new method based on scientometric analysis for the keywords’ assessment in the current research area. A scientometric analysis can deal with vast bibliometric data using a software tool to evaluate the diverse features of the literature. Typical review studies are limited in their ability to comprehensively and accurately link divergent areas of the literature. Based on the analysis of keywords, this study highlighted and described the most significant segments in the research of nano-silica-modified concrete. The challenges associated with using nano-silica were identified, and future research is directed. Moreover, prediction models were developed using data from the literature for the strength estimation of nano-silica-modified concrete. It was noted that the application of nano-silica in cement-based composites is beneficial when used up to an optimal dosage of 2–3% due to high pozzolanic reactivity and a filler effect, whereas a higher dosage of nano-silica has a detrimental influence due to the increased porosity and microcracking caused by the agglomeration of nano-silica particles. The mechanical strength might enhance by 20–25% when NS is incorporated in the optimal amount. The prediction models developed for predicting the strength of nano-silica-modified concrete exhibited good agreement with experimental data due to lower error values. This type of analysis may be used to estimate the essential properties of a material, therefore saving time and money on experimental tests. It is recommended to investigate cost-effective methods for the dispersion of nano-silica in higher concentrations in cement mixes; further in-depth studies are required to develop more accurate prediction models to predict nano-silica-modified concrete properties.

Abstract:Construction activities can cause significant negative impacts on the environment, primarily due to the massive use of vehicles and construction machinery. Researchers have conducted various studies in recent years on reducing the environmental impact of the construction process while ensuring the financial and technical viability of the project. However, a comprehensive and in-depth overview of the existing studies to find out the major knowledge domains and gaps is still rare from the construction management perspective. This study investigated the state-of-the-art green construction research over the past decade by using scientometrics methods. In this study, 1342 papers published between 2010 and 2020 were retrieved from the Web of Science for review. The latest advances in the green construction domain and the research gaps in these previous studies were identified from the scientometrics analysis. Furthermore, a list of relevant suggestions for future research directions to bridge the major knowledge gaps was proposed. Overall, the knowledge gained from this study will help construction practitioners to better formulate green construction strategies and implement green construction projects.

Abstract:The 21st century has witnessed a substantial increase in the demand for construction materials, mainly influenced by the growing population. This increase in demand has resulted in higher prices for these materials and has also placed considerable burdens on environmental resources, prompting the search for eco-friendly and economically viable alternatives such as geopolymer materials to replace traditional materials like cement. The benefits of geopolymer materials as substitutes for cement in concrete extend beyond their exceptional durability. Initially, geopolymer was introduced to address the environmental impact arising from carbon dioxide emissions and the substantial consumption of fossil fuels through the production of cement. The current review investigates recent advances regarding the durability characteristics of geopolymer materials. This includes aspects such as water absorption, temperature resistance, sulfuric acid resistance, sulfate resistance, chloride ion penetration, and freeze–thaw resistance, among others. The results of this review highlight geopolymer concrete's enhanced durability over traditional cement-based concrete. Furthermore, this review offers recommendations and outlines potential research avenues for further exploration of geopolymer concrete.

Abstract:Abstract Concrete is the second-most used material globally and significantly impacts the environment by emitting a large amount of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ). This scientometric review investigates the sustainable use of waste glass (WG) in concrete. Our study examines the impact of waste glass powder (WGP) on the mechanical and fresh characteristics of concrete and its environmental implications, enhanced by a machine learning prediction model. We observed a progressive increase in research activity on WGP-based concrete since 2000, indicating the growing interest in this area. The primary focus areas are engineering and material science, reflecting the application potential, structural performance, and material properties of WGP-based concrete. Our discussions highlight the significant benefits of WGP in concrete, including its potential to reduce landfill usage, environmental pollution, and enhance properties such as strength, sulfate resistance, alkali–silica reaction resistance, and freeze–thaw resistance. The review also explores the microstructure of glass powder (GP)-based concrete, illuminating the complex interactions between glass particles and the concrete matrix, which influence the material’s overall performance. Environmental impact assessments underscore the necessity for sustainable construction practices and waste reduction. Utilizing machine learning prediction models helps optimize the composition of GP-based concrete, thus enhancing material performance and durability. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of using WG in concrete, contributing to the field’s understanding and informing future research and innovations to optimize WG use in concrete applications.

Abstract:The building sector is a major contributor to global resource consumption and waste generation. The circular economy (CE) concept offers a promising alternative to the traditional linear economy by promoting the reuse, remanufacture, repair, and recycling of materials and products. However, the adoption of CE in the building sector faces several barriers. This paper presents a systematic literature review utilising the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) approach, focusing on the barriers and enablers influencing the adoption of the CE concept in the building sector. Drawing from an analysis of numerous papers published between 2008 and 2023, we identified a high number of barriers and enablers that delay the integration of CE. The barriers were categorised into six categories: awareness, technical, economic and market, implementation, support/promotion, and social. The paper also discusses the interdependence of the identified barriers, using a co-occurrence matrix. The study findings indicate lack of CE regulations, fragment supply chain, and high upfront investment cost as major barriers to the implementation of CE in the building sector. Based on the study results, stringent governance and legislation, financial incentives, and the development of technology and innovation for circular building tools are critical factors for the successful implementation of CE principles. The results of this study provide a comprehensive overview of the feasibility to CE adoption in the building sector, which could also help to develop strategies to accelerate the transition to an integrated CE.

Abstract:Due to global demand for sustainability, more advanced techniques have been recommended for improvement cement and construction purposes. Reduction in emissions for all infrastructural projects can be realized when there will be swift scale-up in the use of novel cement alongside the integration of positive policies. This study investigates approaches such as RPC, steel fiber reinforcement, green cement, advanced nano cement and self-consolidating and how they contribute to environmental sustainability and reduction of costs of construction. An improved multifunctional nanoengineered concrete exhibits advanced functionalities in comparison to the conventional cement. For instance, they have up to 79.5% and 146% respective flexural and compressive strengths. Besides, they have advanced thermo-mechanical and electrical performance with a considerable decline in water absorption of almost 400%. Such benefits make this study worth analyzing how these approaches can be implemented. The study also analyzes advanced cement repair and preservation techniques. Due to the low adoption of these sustainable solutions, this study recommends concerted efforts from different stakeholders including policymakers to implement low-carbon rates.

Abstract:Conventional cement is a primary raw material used to manufacture concrete, while the development of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) pollutes the environment and practices a significant amount of energy. Geopolymers have drawn a significant portion of interest and it has been anticipated to displace OPC shortly. Low carbon concretes such as Geopolymer concrete (GPC) have been developed because of the demand for ecologically and environmentally sustainable concrete for buildings and infrastructure. The current investigation presents the state of art summarization of GPC wherein the diverse factors such as geopolymerization process, mechanism cum functions of its ingredients, development using various industrial bi-products along with their properties, applications and current and future challenges have been presented briefly. This review is an attempt to offer substantial basic to advanced knowledge associated with GPC in comparison to conventional concrete, given the promotion of greener and sustainable construction. Apart from the above, the paper also contributes towards some of the current, and future challenges and solutions towards the GPC industry, economic considerations, and authors' inferences in generalized form covering the existing gaps related to the GPC construction. The 'systematic literature review' approach was followed using the 'PRISMA' paradigm to make the study more descriptive and the quantum of work on GPC was analysed using 'VOSviewer'. Most of the investigations carried out on the practice of GPC encourage the idea of its utilization as a greener material; however, a few of the differing outcomes were also parroted. In a nutshell, this review is a single-valued source of knowledge for the GPC that assists future concrete industry, practitioners, researchers, and readers of all domains as their reference for diverse applications.

Abstract:Sustainable building materials in global development can effectively reduce their energy and economic demands. Concrete infused with microorganisms possesses self-repair capabilities, offering a viable solution to mitigate the prevalent issue of concrete material cracking, thereby minimizing environmental harm stemming from deleterious emissions during concrete production or disposal in the construction sector. Although current research has partially reviewed the preparation methods, healing effects and applications of self-healing concrete materials, there is no bibliometric analysis of the field of sustainable microbial self-healing concrete materials based on Web of Science (WoS) at this stage. Therefore, in this study, 1378 articles were screened from WoS using bibliometrics to quantitatively analyze the field of microbial self-healing concrete. A visualization of the current state of research on microbial self-healing concrete materials during the period 2008–2023 is mainly presented, and potential challenges that may lie ahead are pointed out. The aim of this paper is to provide referenceable identification of hotspots and trends for researching the future field of self-healing concrete, which further provides new insights into the future for the field of building materials, environmental protection and governance.

Abstract:Purpose Despite the construction industry's significant impact on high energy use and a growing carbon footprint, technologies like Green BIM help to optimize natural resources, reduce pollution, use sustainable space and work on human comfort and health. But the trend in a holistic approach is minimal. Thus, the paper aimed to systematically investigate Green BIM research and implementation trends using a mixed-method and also show the prospects of holistic Green BIM implementation. Design/methodology/approach First, we conducted a Scientometrics analysis on the topic using the Scopus database for the time interval of (2013–present). Secondly, the Qualitative Content Review method asserted the Scientometrics analysis result. Lastly, exploratory research was done on secondary data to compare the AEC industry trend for a comprehensive view. Findings The merged findings confirmed the partial implementation of Green BIM and of which 43% of research focused only on energy analysis. Despite the potential of BIM and the interrelationship among green building parameters, the result showed other aspects of green building and sustainable design parameters as green material selection, sustainable site, waste management and water-use efficiency not comprised. Originality/value The authors propose a new conceptual framework for integrating green building parameters, BIM tools and green building assessment tools in a life cycle of a project that adds into the sustainability of the Architectural, Engineering and Construction sector. The study would help to provoke researchers, software developers and practitioners for further innovative effort in holistic Green BIM implementation.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to investigate the state of engineering and design research for sustainable construction. It aims to report the current status and future trends within this dynamic field, combining econometric and content analysis using the Bibliometrix R encapsulation tool. This study reviewed academic journals using bibliometric analysis. We selected articles by searching the Scopus database. Primarily relevant articles were identified and screened. The dataset comprised a substantial compilation of 731 journal articles from 278 sources published between January 2000 and June 2023, which formed the basis of the in-depth analysis. The importance of sustainable construction is gradually gaining more attention, and engineering and design are the significant phases of construction. This research identifies that sustainable construction is nothing in isolation; instead, it warrants the holistic integration of multiple factors, as illustrated in the Sankey diagram. Recycling, durability, life cycle assessment, innovative materials, and energy efficiency have emerged as central themes, reflecting global concern to enhance sustainability, reduce environmental impacts, and optimize resource utilization. This study is a valuable resource for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers, offering guidelines for collaborative efforts towards sustainable development. This paper paves the way for interdisciplinary cooperation and strategic alignment among diverse stakeholders, promoting innovative approaches to sustainable construction.
