Abstract:In-depth research and analysis of the spatio-temporal variations of air pollutants in the Yellow River Basin and their driving factors can promote sustainable development in the region and provide scientific basis for targeted air pollution control. Unlike previous studies, our study data not only include traditional air pollutants and , but , , CO and are also considered. Based on monitoring data of 54 cities within the Yellow River Basin from 2017 to 2021, we analyzed the spatio-temporal variations, and cold hotspots of the six pollutants using spatial autocorrelation and hotspot analysis. Subsequently, using geographically weighted regression (GWR) models, we examined the impact of four socioeconomic determinants—population density, urbanization rate, proportion of tertiary industry, and per capita disposable income—on air quality. The findings indicate that: (1) Concentrations of all six pollutants in the Yellow River Basin exhibited a decline from 2017 to 2021, with a spatial distribution decreasing from east to west. (2) There existed a notable spatial correlation among air pollutants, with displaying the strongest correlation and the weakest. Hotspot areas for pollutants were concentrated in the middle and lower reaches of the basin, while coldspot areas were prevalent in the middle and upper reaches. (3) The effects of population density and urbanization rate on the concentration of pollutants were positive, while the effects of proportion of tertiary industry and per capita disposable income on the concentration of pollutants were negative. Therefore, reducing population density and urbanization rate, increasing the proportion of tertiary industry and per capita disposable income are effective means to improve air quality. The results of our study can provide data support for the sustainable development of the Yellow River Basin, and help local governments to take corresponding measures to achieve the coordinated and sustainable development of society, economy, and environment.
