Abstract:Aqueous zinc (Zn) metal batteries have received widespread attention for their high safety and low cost, but some problems during cycling such as dendrite growth, hydrogen evolution reaction, and corrosion reaction hinder their application. Herein, the organic small molecule 1.4.7.10-tetraazacyclododecane (cyclen) is introduced as an effective additive in zinc sulfate electrolyte. Due to abundant N and cyclic structure, cyclen not only has stronger coordination than H 2 O molecules, resulting in the changed solvation structure of Zn 2+ , but also preferentially adsorbs onto the Zn (002) plane, inducing uniform deposition of Zn 2+ . Therefore, the Zn||Zn symmetrical cell achieved long-term cycling of over 2400 hours at 1 mA cm −2 and 1 mAh cm −2 . Moreover, the performance of Zn||V 2 O 5 full cell was improved by the addition of cyclen, with a capacity retention rate of 90.9% after 2000 cycles under 3 A g −1 .

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper mainly proposes solutions to the problems existing in aqueous zinc metal batteries (ZMBs). Zinc metal batteries have attracted widespread attention due to their high safety, low cost, and environmental friendliness. However, some issues during their cycling process, such as dendrite growth, hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and corrosion reactions, limit their practical applications. The paper introduces an organic small molecule—1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (cyclen), as an effective additive for zinc sulfate electrolyte. Cyclen not only changes the solvation structure of zinc ions (Zn²⁺) but also preferentially adsorbs on the zinc (002) plane, thereby inducing uniform deposition of zinc ions and effectively inhibiting dendrite growth. Experimental results show that under the conditions of 1 mA cm⁻² and 1 mAh cm⁻², the zinc symmetric battery with cyclen can stably cycle for over 2400 hours. Additionally, the zinc-vanadium pentoxide full battery with cyclen maintains a capacity retention rate of 90.9% after 2000 cycles at 3 A g⁻¹. Specifically, the above problems are solved through the following points: 1. **Changing the solvation structure**: The coordination bond strength between cyclen and zinc ions is greater than that between water molecules and zinc ions, which changes the solvation environment of zinc ions, reducing the contact of free water molecules, thereby inhibiting hydrogen evolution and corrosion reactions. 2. **Inducing uniform deposition**: Cyclen preferentially adsorbs on the zinc (002) plane, promoting the uniform deposition of zinc ions along this plane, avoiding irregular dendrite growth. 3. **Improving battery performance**: Experiments verified the impact of adding different proportions of cyclen on battery performance and determined the optimal addition amount. Under optimal conditions, the battery exhibited long-term stable cycling performance and high coulombic efficiency. In summary, this study effectively solves the problems of dendrite growth and side reactions in aqueous zinc metal batteries by introducing cyclen as an electrolyte additive, significantly enhancing the cycling stability and overall performance of the battery.
