Abstract:Human exposure to phthalates seems inevitable nowadays, as they are ubiquitous plasticizers found extensively in chemical byproducts. However, robust and growing scientific evidence shows that these endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have multiple effects on the hormonal system and sexual differentiation from the prenatal period to adulthood. Young people, in a gender-dependent manner, represent a susceptible target to the effects of these EDCs, which, if possible, are even more harmful to pregnant women and the fetus. The original research recently published in the IJIR [1] investigates the relationship between phthalate exposure and subjective sexual function assessment in a subset of university female students within a Mitteleuropean context.
