Abstract:Efficient enrichment of targeted gaseous pollutants and fast diffusion rates of charge carriers are essential for the photocatalytic removal of nitric oxides at ambient concentration levels. Here we demonstrate that the construction of nano-structured Bi2O3/Bi2O2CO3 heterojunctions with oxygen vacancies, increasing the photocatalytic NO removal activity, durability and selectivity for final products nitrate formation. Combining the experimental and density-functional theory calculations, it was elucidated that the presence of surface oxygen vacancies not only work as adsorption sites of low concentration NO, but also offer an intimate and integrated structure between surface defects and the light-harvesting heterojunctions, which can facilitate solar energy conversion and charge carrier transfer (more than 2 times). Control experiments with pristine Bi2O3/Bi2O2CO3 also confirmed the crucial role of surface oxygen vacancies on the improvement of NO adsorption and removal ability during the photocatalytic degradation process. We explain the enhanced removal of NO through the synergistic effect of oxygen vacancy and heterojunction, which not only guaranteed the generation of more OH radicals, but also provided another route to produce hydrogen peroxide. Our findings may provide an opportunity to develop a promising catalyst for air pollution control.
Monolayer Epitaxial Heterostructures for Selective Visible‐Light‐Driven Photocatalytic NO Oxidation

Abstract:Construction of vertical heterostructures by stacking two‐dimensional (2D) layered materials via chemical bonds can be an effective strategy to explore advanced solar‐energy‐conversion systems. However, it remains a great challenge to fabricate such heterostructures based on conversional oxide‐based compounds, as they either do not possess a 2D layered structure or are not suitable for epitaxial growth due to large lattice mismatch. Here, a vertical heterostructure of bismuth oxyhalide semiconductors fabricated through a heteroepitaxial anion exchange method is reported. Monolayer Bi2WO6 is epitaxially grown on the exposed surface of BiOI to inhibit photocorrosion and introduce active sites. Theoretical and experimental results reveal that electrons generated under visible‐light irradiation can directly transfer to surface coordinatively unsaturated (CUS) Bi atoms, which contribute to the adsorption and activation of reactant molecules. As a result, the Bi2WO6/BiOI vertical heterostructures exhibit significantly enhanced visible‐light‐driven NO oxidation activity compared with BiOI and Bi2WO6.
Insight into the mechanism of deep NO photo-oxidation by bismuth tantalate with oxygen vacancies

Abstract:Deeply photocatalytic oxidation of nitrogen oxides is still difficult to achieve, mainly limited by few intrinsic active sites and inefficient carrier separation of photocatalysts. Accordingly, we develop a simple room temperature tactic to introduce oxygen vacancies (OVs) into Bi3TaO7 (BTO). Based on solid experimental and DFT theoretical supports, we explore the mechanism of NO removal over OVs decorated BTO (OVs-BTO). OVs can not only alter the distribution of local electrons to result in the formation of a fast charge transfer channel between OVs and the adjacent Ta atoms, which improves the transport rate of photogenerated carriers; but also function as active sites to adsorb small molecules (NO, O2 and H2O), which being activated and positively drive the NO oxidation reaction. In order to investigate a possible reaction path, a combination of in-situ DRIFTS and simulated Gibbs free energy reveals that the intermediate products of OVs-BTO are helpful to promote the deep oxidation of NO to NO3-, while pristine BTO is more likely to produce NO2 intermediate toxic by-products, which greatly hinders the deep photocatalytic oxidation of NO. This work provides insights into the role of OVs in photocatalysts, and also points out a guideline for the mechanism of semiconductor photocatalysts in eliminating gaseous pollutants.

Surface Boronizing Can Weaken the Excitonic Effects of BiOBr Nanosheets for Efficient O2 Activation and Selective NO Oxidation under Visible Light Irradiation

Abstract:The photocatalytic O2 activation for pollutant removal highly depends on the controlled generation of desired reactive oxygen species (ROS). Herein, we demonstrate that the robust excitonic effect of BiOBr nanosheets, which is prototypical for singlet oxygen (1O2) production to partially oxidize NO into a more toxic intermediate NO2, can be weakened by surface boronizing via inducing a staggered band alignment from the surface to the bulk and simultaneously generating more surface oxygen vacancy (VO). The staggered band alignment destabilizes excitons and facilitates their dissociation into charge carriers, while surface VO traps electrons and efficiently activates O2 into a superoxide radical (•O2-) via a one-electron-transfer pathway. Different from 1O2, •O2- enables the complete oxidation of NO into nitrate with high selectivity that is more desirable for safe indoor NO remediation under visible light irradiation. This study provides a facile excitonic effect manipulating method for layered two-dimensional photocatalysts and sheds light on the importance of managing ROS production for efficient pollutant removal.
Oxygen Deficient Zno1-X Nanosheets with High Visible Light Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:Zinc oxide is one of the most important wide-band-gap (3.2 eV) materials with versatile properties, however, it can not be excited by visible light. In this work, we have developed an exquisite and simple way to prepare oxygen-deficient ZnO1-x nanosheets with a gray-colored appearance and excellent visible light photocatalytic activity. Detailed analysis based on UV-Vis absorption spectra, X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra, and photoluminescence (PL) spectra confirms the existence of oxygen vacancies in ZnO1-x. The incorporation of oxygen defects could effectively extend the light absorption of ZnO1-x into the visible-light region due to the fact that the energy of the localized state is located in the forbidden gap. Thus, our obtained ZnO1-x shows a higher photodegradation of methyl orange (MO) compared to defect-free ZnO under visible light illumination. Additionally, the high content of (OH)-O-center dot radicals with a strong photo-oxidation capability over the ZnO1-x nanosheets significantly contributes to the improvement in the photocatalytic performance. Our oxygen deficient ZnO1-x sample shows a very high photocatalytic activity for the degradation of MO even after 5 cycles without any obvious decline. The results demonstrate that defect engineering is a powerful tool to enhance the optoelectronic and photocatalytic performances of nanomaterials.
Superior NOx Photocatalytic Removal over Hybrid Hierarchical Bi/BiOI with High Non-No2 Selectivity: Synergistic Effect of Oxygen Vacancies and Bismuth Nanoparticles

Abstract:To achieve an efficient photocatalyst for NO pollution control, abundant oxygen vacancies and metallic bismuth (Bi) nanoparticles were simultaneously introduced into three-dimensional hierarchal BiOI via in situ self-reduction with aqueous NaBH4. The obtained 20-Bi/BiOI exhibited superior NOx (NO and NO2) removal efficiency with high selectivity for non-NO2, compared to pristine BiOI. After careful analysis of various characterization results, it was found that such an enhancement was attributed to the synergistic results of shallow donors formed by oxygen vacancies and the surface plasmonic resonance (SPR) effect of Bi nanoparticles, both of which contributed to the promotion of light harvesting and the suppression of the recombination of photoinduced charge carriers. What's more, oxygen vacancies can improve NO adsorption, strongly combine with NO2, and facilitate the formation of OH and O-2(-) radicals, promoting the deep oxidation of NOx (NO and NO2) to NO2- and NO3-, robustly evidenced by the results of ion chromatography. Overall, this work highlights the synergistic effects of Bi and oxygen vacancies introduced by a self-reduction strategy and opens up an effective avenue for addressing NO pollution.
Synergistic photocatalytic NO removal of oxygen vacancies and metallic bismuth on Bi12TiO20 nanofibers under visible light irradiation

Abstract:Tailoring the semiconductors with non-precious metals or defects have been demonstrated to be a fascinating and prospective approach for environmental remediation. In this work, Bi metal and oxygen vacancies (OVs) co-modified Bi12TiO20 nanofibers (Bi/BTO) photocatalysts were synthesized through electrospinning technique and subsequent chemical reduction method for the first time. The Bi/BTO composite photocatalysts exhibit significantly higher photocatalytic NO removal activity than that of pristine BTO under visible light irradiation. The improvement of photocatalytic performance is ascribed to the integrative effect of OVs and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Bi particles. The presence of OVs is confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the OVs in BTO induce the formation of a defect level, which is beneficial to increase light absorption. In addition, Bi can act as an electron sink, boosting the separation of photoinduced electron-hole pairs. The trapping experiment and electron spin resonance spectra indicate that the main active species are ·O2 − and h+. Moreover, the reaction process over 3% Bi/BTO is monitored by in situ infrared spectroscopy (in situ FTIR) and a reasonable photocatalytic mechanism of NO removal on Bi/BTO is proposed through a combination of experimental and theoretical results.

Abstract:Constructing oxygen vacancies (OVs) in metal-oxide semiconductors is an effective and simple way to enhance the photocatalytic performance via promoting the utilization of solar light and boosting the formation of surface reactive oxygen species (ROS). The presence of different oxygen atoms in the same crystal structure can possibly lead to the formation of different types of OVs with distinct physicochemical and optoelectronic properties. Particularly, the two different crystallographic positions of oxygen atoms in the [BiO]22+ layer of (BiO)2CO3 (BOC) allow the construction of two types of OVs (OVs1 and OVs2). In this work, OVs1-BOC and OVs2-BOC are synthesized via introducing the OVs1 and OVs2 on the surface of the BOC. The influence of OVs1 and OVs2 on the generation of ROS in the BOC is demonstrated based on theoretical and experimental studies by analyzing the separation and redox potentials of photogenerated charge carriers, absorption surface adsorbates (H2O and O2), and reaction active energy. The photocatalytic performance is evaluated by photo-oxidative nitric oxide (NO) removal efficiency under visible light irradiation. The OVs1-BOC and OVs2-BOC exhibit 50.0 and 41.6% photo-oxidative NO removal efficiencies, while generating 15.6 and 16.54 ppb NO2, respectively. The in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and estimated NO conversion pathway reveal the photo-oxidative NO removal mechanism and suppression of NO2 formation on the surfaces of OVs1-BOC and OVs2-BOC. Abstract:Semiconductor-based photocatalysis is an ideal method for air purification by eliminating nitrogen oxide (NO). However, sluggish carrier separation, photocatalysts deactivation and incomplete oxidation are significant bottlenecks for photocatalytic treatment of indoor pollutant NO. Herein, ZnO with assorted structures is fabricated and undergoes further modification for deliberate surface defect constructions. Utilized flux agents during the synthesis provide a more feasible reducing atmosphere, under which spontaneous generations of the surface vacancies become easier, and gradient concentrations are precisely controlled. Photocatalyst characterizations affirm the successful creation of surface defects, which are further evaluated by solar-light-driven NO (ppb level) removal investigations. Results showed that ZnO rich in oxygen vacancies (VO-rich ZnO) exhibited 5.43 and 1.63 times enhanced NO removal with fewer toxic product NO2 formations than its counterparts pristine and VO-poor ZnO, respectively. Importantly, with higher VO on the unusual nonpolar facets, VO-rich ZnO does not only display enhanced NO conversion, but also shows the unselective NO removal process by producing NO3 –. The plausible reaction mechanisms of promoted NO conversions are further investigated based on the surface VO, well-positioned band structures, and enhanced carrier separations. Results showed that the surface VO with gradient concentrations are not only promoted carrier separation, but also facilitate molecular oxygen activation, leading to the generations of strong oxidant superoxide radicals (·O2 –), and contributing to the enhanced improved efficiency. Adsorption of small molecules (O2, H2O and NO) on the defective surface was further investigated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which validated the successful adsorption/activation of NO and O2, further contributed to the improved NO conversions.

Abstract:Photocatalytic NO removal is a green and sustainable alternative to the conventional thermocatalysis in the conversion of NO to nitrates. However, the efficiency of photocatalytic NO removal is restricted by weak NO adsorption and high charge recombination on photocatalyst. Herein, we report on one-step synthesis of Ag/Bi5O7Br nanosheets with rich oxygen vacancies (OVs) by a facile liquid phase reduction method. Under visible light irradiation on oxygen-vacancy-rich Ag/Bi5O7Br for 50 min the photocatalytic NO removal ratio is up to 64.65%, which is about 1.6 times higher than that by using pristine Bi5O7Br. The average oxygen production rate is 823 μmol·g−1·h−1, which is nearly 10 times higher than that of Bi5O7Br. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that OVs incorporation and plasmonic Ag can synergistically strengthen NO adsorption on Bi5O7Br. This work highlights the great potential of defects and plasmonic metals on synergistic enhancement in photocatalytic NO removal and oxygen evolution.

Abstract:To explore an efficient photocatalyst for NO pollution, a direct Z-scheme photocatalytic system is successfully fabricated by coupling Bi2WO6 with NH2-UiO-66 via a simple hydrothermal synthesis technique. The Z-scheme system promotes the NO photocatalytic oxidation activity with an optimum NO removal rate of 79%, which is 2.7 and 1.2 times that obtained by using only pristine Bi2WO6 and NH2-UiO-66, respectively. Simultaneously, superior selectivity for converting NO to NO3 -/NO2 - is observed. The enhanced photocatalytic performance of the Bi2WO6/NH2-UiO-66 hybrids is attributed to the following two aspects: (i) large specific area of NH2-UiO-66, which exposes more active sites and is beneficial to the adsorption and activation of NO; (ii) outstanding Z-scheme structure constructed between BiWO6 and NH2-UiO-66, which can improve the efficiency of the separation of electron-hole pairs and preserves the strong oxidation ability of hybrids. ESR analysis shows that ·O2 - and ·OH contribute to NO removal. A possible photocatalytic mechanism of NO oxidation on the direct Z-scheme photocatalyst (BWO/2NU) under visible light irradiation is proposed. This work displays the BWO/2NU hybrid's potential for treating low-concentration air pollutants, and the proposed Z-scheme photocatalyst design and promotion mechanism may inspire more rational synthesis of highly efficient photocatalysts for NO removal.
Efficient Visible Light Photocatalytic Oxidation of NO in Air with Band-Gap Tailored (bio)2co3–bioi Solid Solutions

Abstract:In order to develop efficient visible light photocatalysts for air purification, three dimensional (3D) (BiO)2CO3/BiOI (BOC/BOI) solid solutions were synthesized by a template free method at room temperature. This environment benign route could avoid high temperature and reduce the production cost. The results indicated that the as-prepared hierarchical nanocomposites samples assembled with 2D nanosheets were solid solutions. The aggregation of nanosheets led to the formation of 3D hierarchical porous architecture. For the (BiO)2(CO3)x(I2)1−x solid solution with x=0.5, 0.75, 0.95, the samples have down-lowered valence band (VB) and up-lifted conduction band (CB) in contrast to (BiO)2CO3. Compared with (BiO)2CO3 (3.14eV), the (BiO)2(CO3)x(I2)1−x solid solution showed narrowed band gaps from 1.89 to 2.68eV which are suitable for visible light excitation. The 3D (BiO)2(CO3)x(I2)1−x solid solutions displayed efficient photocatalytic activity and high durability toward photo-oxidation of NO (600ppb) in air. The large surface areas, hierarchical structure, and tailed band-gap structure contributed to the efficient photocatalytic oxidation ability of (BiO)2(CO3)x(I2)1−x solid solution. As NO has very low solubility and NO2 has a large solubility in water. A high NO to NO2 conversion ratio is beneficial for NOx removal by aqueous absorption. The photo-oxidation products can be readily and inexpensively removed by alkaline aqueous absorption. This work could provide new insights into the design, synthesis and environmental application of hierarchical nanocomposites photocatalysts.

Abstract:Photocatalysis technology prevails as a feasible option for air pollution control, in which high-efficiency charge separation and effective pollutant activation are the crucial issues. Here, this work designed Bi-metal@ Bi2O2[BO2(OH)] with oxygen vacancies (OVs) catalyst for photocatalytic oxidation of NO under visible light, to shed light on the above two processes. Experimental characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that a unique electron transfer covalent loop([Bi2O2]2+ → Bi-metal → O2-)can be formed during the reaction to guide the directional transfer of carriers, significantly improving the charge separation efficiency and the yield of active oxygen species. Simultaneously, the defect levels served by OVs also play a part. During the NO purification process, in-situ DRIFTS assisted with DFT calculations reveal that Bi metals could be functioned as electron donors to activate NO molecules and form NO-, a key intermediate. This induces a new reaction path of NO → NO- → NO3- to achieve the harmless conversion of NO, effectively restraining the generation of noxious intermediates (NO2, N2O4). It is expected that this study would inspire the design of more artful photocatalysts for effective charge transfer and safe pollutants purification.

Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is an essential and versatile oxidant. The photocatalytic production of H2O2 is a promising alternative to the conventional anthraquinone oxidation process. In this work, BiOBr nanosheets with oxygen vacancies (Ovs) were successfully synthesized by a solvothermal method in the presence of mannitol. The character of nanosheets shortened the diffuse length of charge carriers which is beneficial for the charge separation. The introduction of Ovs enhanced the visible light absorption and also improved the carrier separation. Furthermore, Ovs enhanced the activation of O2 molecules and facilitated the generation of •O2-. As a result, the products exhibited good performance in photocatalytic H2O2 production. After introducing HCOOH the yield of H2O2 was further enhanced by a factor of 50, from 3 μmol·h-1 to 150 μmol·h-1. This work provides a reference to design high performance photocatalysts for H2O2 production through defect engineering.

Abstract:Photocatalytic oxidation has been widely acknowledged as an economical and effective technology for the treatment of lowconcentration NO. Three-dimensional (3D) BiOI microspheres, which are typical visible-light responsive semiconductor photocatalysts, often suffer from quick recombination of photogenerated carriers and unsatisfactory electrical conductivity when applied in NO photocatalytic oxidation reactions. However, owing to their micro-sized structures, they are usually difficult to couple with other semiconductors and co-catalysts because of their incompact interfaces that provide insufficient contact. In this study, a rare-earth metal (La) doping strategy was first adopted to modify BiOI microspheres via a simple one-step solvothermal method; subsequently, the photocatalytic NO oxidation performance under visible light illumination was systematically investigated. Further, the La precursors and doping contents were optimized. It was found that La(NO3)2 was the best precursor when compared to LaCl3 and La(AC)3. Moreover, 0.3%La/BiOI exhibited the best NO photocatalytic conversion efficiency of up to 74%, which was significantly higher than that of the pure BiOI benchmark (44%). It also exhibited excellent stability during the continuous 5-cycle experiments. Analysis of the physicochemical properties revealed that La doping facilitated the crystallization of BiOI without altering its morphology and structure. La3+ may enter the BiOI lattice by substituting Bi3+ or forming La2O3 nanoclusters that homogeneously scatter in the mesopores of BiOI microspheres. The analysis of the underlying mechanism further revealed that La doping not only enhanced the light harvesting properties by decreasing the bandgaps of BiOI and accelerating the charge separation and transfer dynamics, but also introduced more oxygen vacancies and facilitated the formation of more OH radicals by dissociating the water molecules. All these factors co-contributed to the promotion of NO photocatalytic oxidation activities. Furthermore, NO was mainly oxidized to NO2 over La/BiOI, and the formed NO2 tended to desorb from the catalyst surface, which not only maintained the intactness of active sites and facilitated the sustainable occurrence of NO photocatalytic oxidation reactions, but also prevented the photocatalysts from frequent washing-regeneration; therefore, these factors account for the superior photocatalytic stability of La/BiOI and its long-term operation. The formed NO2 could be easily and totally absorbed by the tail alkaline liquid, thereby effectively avoiding secondary pollution. Therefore, this study elucidates that doping is indeed a feasible and effective approach for the modification of 3D BiOI microspheres, while providing inspiration for the rational design and modification of other 3D semiconductor materials for various photocatalytic applications.
In-situ generation of oxygen vacancies and metallic bismuth from (BiO)2CO3 via N2-assisted thermal-treatment for efficient selective photocatalytic NO removal

Abstract:In this study, a N2-assisted thermal treatment method is proposed for in-situ formation of a series of oxygen vacancies (OVs)-rich Bi0/Bi-based photocatalysts, including OVs-(BiO)2CO3, Bi0/OVs-(BiO)2CO3, Bi0/OVs-(BiO)2CO3/β-Bi2O3, Bi0/OVs-β-Bi2O3, Bi0/OVs-β-Bi2O3/α-Bi2O3 and Bi0/α-Bi2O3. Mechanisms of in-situ formation of Bi0 nanoparticles and generation of OVs in Bi-based photocatalysts are clarified. Apart from their contribution to the effective separation of photogenerated charge carriers and enhancement of light absorption, the effects of Bi0 nanoparticles and OVs on selective photocatalytic oxidation of NO are also investigated. Among the synthesized Bi-based photocatalysts, Bi0/OVs-(BiO)2CO3 shows the best photocatalytic activity and stability for photo-oxidative removal of NO. The systematic study of photocatalytic mechanism demonstrated that the Ohmic contact between OVs-(BiO)2CO3 and Bi0 gradually promote the formation of •O2 – and •OH species. It is found that •O2 – plays an important role in the photocatalytic NO removal process, while •OH species can effectively inhibit the formation of NO2 during the NO removal process. The new approach demonstrated in this study can be applied for the in-situ formation of wide-solar-spectrum-responsive photocatalysts with efficient photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Heterostructural engineering and three-dimensional architecture construction are effective strategies to optimize the photocatalytic performance of semiconductors. Herein, we integrate these two strategies and controllably synthesize ZnO-BiOI heterostructures with well-defined architectures. Microstructural and surface analysis reveals that the strong electronic interaction between ZnO and Bi3+ ensures a bounded nucleation and growth of BiOI on the surface of ZnO, which leads to the formation of ZnO-BiOI nanorod heterostructures (ZnO-BiOI-NR) with very high dispersion of BiOI on ZnO nanorods. In contrast, when the nucleation and growth of BiOI occurs before reacting with ZnO nanorods, ZnO-BiOI heterostructures (ZnO-BiOI-NF) are composed of BiOI nanoflowers (NFs) and ZnO nanorods. The precise control over the interfaces of ZnO-BiOI heterostructures provides ideal models to investigate the influence of the interfaces on the catalytic performance of heterostructures. It is important to highlight that the photocatalytic activity of ZnO-BiOI-NR is 12 times higher than that of ZnO-BiOI-NF. Mechanism studies suggest that the abundant ZnO-BiOI interfaces in ZnO-BiOI-NR benefit the generation and separation of hole-electron pairs, which consequently improve the catalytic performance.

Abstract:To improve the photocatalytic oxidation reaction activity for NO removal, photocatalysts with excellent activity are required to activate molecular oxygen. Solid solution and heterojunction were suggested as effective strategies to enhance the molecular oxygen activation viaexciton and carrier photocatalysis. In this study, a solid solution and heterojunction containing BiOBr0.5I0.5/BiOI catalyst was synthesized, and it showed improved photocatalytic activity for removing NO. The photocatalytic NO removal mechanism indicated that synergistic effects between the solid solution and heterojunction induced the enhanced activity for molecular oxygen activation. The photogenerated holes, superoxide, and singlet oxygen generated by the carrier and exciton photocatalysis supported the high photocatalytic NO removal efficiency. This study provides new ideas for designing efficient Bi-O-X (X = Cl, Br, I) photocatalysts for oxidation reactions.The synergistic effect of solid solution and heterojunction was used to enhance the ability of BiOBr0.5I0.5/BiOI to removal NO under visible light.

Abstract:Oxygen vacancies in crystal have important impacts on the electronic properties of ZnO. With ZnO(2) as precursors, we introduce a high concentration of oxygen vacancies into ZnO successfully. The obtained ZnO exhibits a yellow color, and the absorption edge shifts to longer wavelength. Raman and XPS spectra reveal that the concentration of oxygen vacancies in the ZnO decreased when the samples are annealed at higher temperature in air. It is consistent with the theory calculation. The increasing of oxygen vacancies results in a narrowing bandgap and increases the visible light absorption of the ZnO. The narrowing bandgap can be confirmed by the enhancement of the photocurrent response when the ZnO was irradiated with visible light. The ZnO with oxygen vacancies are found to be efficient for photodecomposition of 2,4-dichlorophenol under visible light irradiation.

Abstract:How to optimize the photogenerated electron-hole pairs' separation efficiency and redox performance of defective photocatalysts is still a concern for photocatalysis research. In this study, rich oxygen vacancy was introduced in Bi7O9I3 microsphere (Bi7O9I3-OVR) via a facile ionic liquid assisted solvothemal method to investigate the charge separation and photocatalytic performance. To demonstrate the dominant role of the introduced oxygen vacancy, partial oxygen vacancy in Bi7O9I3 microsphere was repaired by post-calcination treatment (Bi7O9I3-OVL), which was confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). The experimental results indicated the introduction of oxygen vacancy boosted the holes mobility and electrons reduction of Bi7O9I3, then the increased charge carriers' separation efficiency and high concentration of produced reactive oxygen species was realized. Benefiting from these, the Bi7O9I3-OVR microsphere exhibited a better photocatalytic oxygen evolution performance than Bi7O9I3-OVL, and the oxygen evolution rate was up to 2.66 μmol m-2 h-1.
