Abstract:This paper proposes to define a family of spatial algebraic–trigonometric Pythagorean Hodograph (ATPH) curves by integrals of scaled unit tangent vector fields which are originally defined as sphere curves. The obtained ATPH curves have only polynomial parametric speeds but the curves can be employed to represent several typical non-polynomial curves without rational form. A simple algorithm for geometric Hermite interpolation by the proposed spatial ATPH curves without or with arc length constraint has been given. Given two boundary points and two unit tangents at the points, possibly with a prescribed arc length, a unique interpolating ATPH curve can be obtained by solving a simple linear system.

Abstract:In many closed quantum systems, an interesting phenomenon, called quantum carpet, can be observed, where the evolution of wave function exhibits a carpet-like pattern. The mechanism of quantum carpet is similar to the classical interference pattern of light. Although the origin of quantum carpets has been studied previously, there are still many interesting details worth exploring. Here, we presented a unified framework for a simultaneous analyzing on three features of quantum carpets, namely full revival, fractional revival and diagonal canal. For fractional revival, a complete formula is presented to explain its generation through "Gaussian sum theory", in which all the essential features, including the phases and amplitudes, of this phenomenon could be captured analytically. Moreover, we also revealed the relations between the interference terms of the diagonal canals and their geometric interpretations, providing a better understanding in the formation of diagonal canals.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide a complete characterization on when the Hausdorff and topological Hausdorff dimension of a given Bedford–McMullen carpet coincide. These two dimensions have a common value if and only if the carpet is either the Cartesian product of [Formula: see text] and a self-similar set, or it is one of the two diagonals of the unit square.

Abstract:The term "quantum carpet" can be observed in many closed quantum systems, where the evolution of a wave function exhibits a carpet-like pattern. Although the origins of quantum carpets have previously been studied by various researchers, many interesting details are still worth exploring. Abstract:We study the fine scaling properties of planar self-affine carpets. For Gatzouras--Lalley carpets, we give a precise formula for maximal Hausdorff dimension of a tangent in terms of the Hausdorff dimension of the projection and the Assouad dimension of the corresponding vertical slice. Using regularity properties for the Assouad dimension of non-autonomous self-similar sets, this implies that the set of points with tangents that are as large as possible has full Hausdorff measure, at the critical exponent. On the other hand, we give an explicit example of a Barański carpet for which the Hausdorff dimension of the set of points for which there exists a maximal tangent has Hausdorff dimension strictly less than the Hausdorff dimension of the original carpet.

Free-Space Entangled Quantum Carpets

Abstract:The Talbot effect in quantum physics is known to produce intricate patterns in the probability distribution of a particle, known as "quantum carpets", corresponding to the revival and replication of the initial wave function. Recently, it was shown that one can encode a $D$-level qudit, in such a way that the Talbot effect can be used to process the $D$-dimensional quantum information [Far\'ıas et al, PRA (2015)]. Here we introduce a scheme to produce free-propagating "entangled quantum carpets" with pairs of photons produced by spontaneous parametric down-conversion. First we introduce an optical device that can be used to synthesize arbitrary superposition states of Talbot qudits. Sending spatially entangled photon pairs through a pair of these devices produces an entangled pair of qudits. As an application, we show how the Talbot effect can be used to test a $D$-dimensional Bell inequality. Numerical simulations show that violation of the Bell inequality depends strongly on the amount of spatial correlation in the initial two-photon state. We briefly discuss how our optical scheme might be adapted to matter wave experiments.

Quantum Transport in Sierpinski Carpets

Abstract:Recent progress in the design and fabrication of artificial two-dimensional (2D) materials paves the way for the experimental realization of electron systems moving on complex geometries, such as plane fractals. In this work, we calculate the quantum conductance of a 2D electron gas roaming on a Sierpinski carpet (SC), i.e., a plane fractal with Hausdorff dimension intermediate between 1 and 2. We find that the fluctuations of the quantum conductance are a function of energy with a fractal graph, whose dimension can be chosen by changing the geometry of the SC. This behavior is independent of the underlying lattice geometry.

Intermediate dimensions of Bedford-McMullen carpets with applications to Lipschitz equivalence

Abstract:Intermediate dimensions were recently introduced to provide a spectrum of dimensions interpolating between Hausdorff and box-counting dimensions for fractals where these differ. In particular, the self-affine Bedford-McMullen carpets are a natural case for investigation, but until now only very rough bounds for their intermediate dimensions have been found. In this paper, we determine a precise formula for the intermediate dimensions $\dim_{\, \theta}\Lambda$ of any Bedford-McMullen carpet $\Lambda$ for the whole spectrum of $\theta \in [0,1]$, in terms of a certain large deviations rate function. The intermediate dimensions exist and are strictly increasing in $\theta$, and the function $\theta\mapsto \dim_{\, \theta}\Lambda$ exhibits interesting features not witnessed on any previous example, such as having countably many phase transitions, between which it is analytic and strictly concave.

Abstract:Astigmatic unitary transformations allow for the adiabatic connections of all feasible states of paraxial Gaussian beams on the same modal sphere, i.e., Hermite-Laguerre-Gaussian (HLG) modes. Here, we present a comprehensive investigation into the unitary modal evolution of complex structured Gaussian beams, comprised by HLG modes from disparate modal spheres, via astigmatic transformation. The non-synchronized higher-order geometric phases in cyclic transformations originates a Talbot-effect-like modal evolution in the superposition state of these HLG modes, resulting in pattern variations and revivals in transformations with specific geodesic loops. Using Ince-Gaussian modes as an illustrative example, we systematically analyze and experimentally corroborate the beamforming mechanism behind the pattern evolution. Our results outline a generic modal conversion theory of structured Gaussian beams via astigmatic unitary transformation, offering a new approach for shaping spatial modal structure. These findings may inspire a wide variety of applications based on structured light.

Abstract:The self-imaging (Talbot) effect in hyperbolic mediums is analyzed theoretically. In these mediums, the transverse and longitudinal permittivity components have opposite signs. We propose a general solution about the Talbot distance in these mediums. Approximations are given for both deep sub-wavelength gratings and gratings with periods much larger than the incident wavelength. Based on these approximations, formulas for the Talbot distance in different cases are given and demonstrated. The Talbot effect in hyperbolic medium can be used to achieve super resolution, thus enabling applications such as photolithography.

Abstract:Single photon interference due to passage through a periodic grating is considered in a novel proposal for processing D-dimensional quantum systems (quDits) encoded in the spatial degrees of freedom of light. We show that free space propagation naturally implements basic single quDit gates by means of the Talbot effect: an intricate time-space carpet of light in the near field diffraction regime. Adding a diagonal phase gate, we show that a complete set of single quDit gates can be implemented. We then introduce a spatially-dependent beam splitter that allows implementation of controlled operations between two quDits. A new form of universal quantum information processing can then be implemented with linear optics and ancilla photons. Though we consider photons, our scheme should be directly applicable to a number of other physical systems. Interpretation of the Talbot effect as a quantum logic operation provides a beautiful and interesting way to visualize quantum computation through wave propagation and interference.

Abstract:We derive some new generating function formulae of the two-variable Hermite polynomials, such as ∞∑n=0tm/m!Hn,2m（x）,∞∑n=0sntm/n!m!H2n,2m（x,y）,and ∞∑n=0sntm/n!m!H2n+l,2m+k（x,y）.We employ the operator Hermite polynomial method and the technique of integration within an ordered product of operators to solve these problems, which will be useful in constructing new optical field states.
Self-embedding similitudes of Bedford-McMullen carpets with dependent ratios

Abstract:We prove that any non-degenerate Bedford-McMullen carpet does not allow oblique self-embedding similitudes; that is, if $f$ is a similitude sending the carpet into itself, then the image of the $x$-axis under $f$ must be parallel to one of the principal axes. We also establish a logarithmic commensurability result on the contraction ratios of such embeddings. This completes a previous study of Algom and Hochman [Ergod. Th. & Dynam. Sys. 39 (2019), 577--603] on Bedford-McMullen carpets generated by multiplicatively independent exponents, together with a new proof on their non-obliqueness statement. For the self-similar case, however, we construct a generalized Sierpinski carpet that is symmetric with respect to an appropriate oblique line and hence allows a reflectional oblique self-embedding. As a complement, we prove that if a generalized Sierpinski carpet satisfies the strong separation condition and permits an oblique rotational self-embedding similitude, then the tangent of the rotation angle takes values $\pm 1$.

Abstract:We study a stochastic equation modeling the lay-down of fibers in the production process of nonwovens. The equation can be formulated as some manifold-valued Stratonovich stochastic differential equation. Especially, we study the long time behaviour of the stochastic process. Demanding mathematical difficulties arising due to the degeneracity of the lay-down equation and its associated generator. We prove strong mixing properties by making use of the hypoellipticity of the generator and a new version of Doob's theorem derived recently by Gerlach and Nittka. Moreover, we show convergence to equilibrium exponentially fast with explicitly computable rate of convergence. This analytic approach uses powerful modern Hilbert space methods from the theory of hypocoercivity developed by Dolbeault, Mouhot and Schmeiser. Summarizing, we give interesting mathematical applications of geometric stochastic analysis to real world problems.

Abstract:We define balanced self-similar quasi-round carpets and compare the carpet moduli of some path families relating to such a carpet. Then, using some known results on quasiconformal geometry of carpets, we prove that the group of quasisymmetric self-homeomorphisms of every balanced self-similar quasi-round carpet is finite. Furthermore, we prove that some balanced self-similar carpets in the unit square with strong geometric symmetry are quasisymmetrically rigid by using the quasisymmetry of weak tangents of carpets.
