Abstract:A new zooxanthellate scleractinian coral, Paragoniastrea variabilis Kishi, Nomura & Fukami, sp. nov. ( Scleractinia , Merulinidae ), is described from non-coral reef regions of Japan and northern Taiwan. This new species was previously recognized as a morphological variant of Paragoniastrea deformis (Veron, 1990) and can be morphologically distinguished from that species by lacking groove-and-tube structures on corallite wall joints, and by having larger calices, numerous septa, and up to three corallites in one valley. The new species also formed an independent clade from its congeners, P. australensis (Milne Edwards & Haime, 1857), P. deformis and P. russelli (Wells, 1954), in the molecular phylogeny based on the mitochondrial intergenic region and nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacers.

Abstract:A new species of the genus Parhyale, Stebbing 1897 was collected from the intertidal region of Chilika Lagoon associated with the seaweed Gracilaria sp. Parhyale odian sp. nov. differs from other species of the genus by having a stout robust seta on the surface of the propodus near to dactyl hinge of male gnathopod 1. With the new description of P. odian sp. nov., the global species number in the genus rises to 16.

A New Species of Sea Whip Gorgonian-Associated Zoantharian (Cnidaria: Anthozoa: Hexacorallia: Parazoanthidae) from the Ryukyu Islands, Japan, with Subgeneric Subdivision of Genus Umimayanthus

Abstract:Symbioses between invertebrates are common in the ocean although usually the diversity and specificity of their interactions are not well understood. Parazoanthidae (Cnidaria: Anthozoa: Zoantharia) is one of the most diverse zoantharian families in terms of numbers of genera and species. Species in this family are commonly associated with various other invertebrates that they utilize as their substrate. Previous studies have re-organized the taxonomy of Parazoanthidae and revealed a strong specificity between many parazoanthid species and genera and their substrates. However, our understanding of the species diversity of Parazoanthidae is far from complete, as parazoanthids are often overlooked in sampling surveys. In this study, we establish three subgenera under the genus Umimayanthus Montenegro, Sinniger, and Reimer, 2015; the nominotypical Umimayanthus, Paraumimayanthus subgen nov., and Gorgoniazoanthus subgen. nov., based on the finding of a new species, Umimayanthus (Gorgoniazoanthus) kanabou sp. nov., associated with the sea-whip gorgonian Ellisella sp. from approximately 30 m depth in shallow mesophotic coral reef communities in Oura Bay on Okinawajima Island and in Oshima Strait near Amami-Oshima Island, in the Ryukyu Islands, southern Japan. We additionally report on gastropods and crustaceans observed in association with U. kanabou, and these species are thought to potentially prey upon the zoantharians or on gorgonian polyps. Umimayanthus kanabou is phylogenetically closely related to congeneric sponge-associated Umimayanthus spp., further supporting the recent hypothesis that substrate preferences may change during the evolutionary history of zoantharians.
Diversity of Paranura Axelson, 1902 (Collembola: Neanuridae: Neanurinae) in Pacific Region of Russia and United States

Abstract:Eight new species of the genus Paranura are described from temperate zone of Holarctic. Five of them: Paranura reticulata sp. nov., Paranura oregonensis sp. nov., Paranura reducta sp. nov., Paranura cassagnaui sp. nov. and Paranura microchaetosa sp. nov. were found in coniferous forests of Oregon state, USA. Three others: Paranura kedrovayensis sp. nov., Paranura setosa sp. nov. and Paranura conjuncta sp. nov. were collected in mixed woods of Russian Far East. All new species are illustrated in detail and compared with existing taxa. P. reticulata sp. nov. is characterised by having three ocular chaetae, relatively short chaeta F on head, four ordinary chaetae De on th. III and three chaetae Di in abd. V (in s-uenoi two chaetae). The presence of only one ordinary chaeta De on abdomen IV is the most characteristic and recognizable character of P. oregonensis sp. nov. P. reducta sp. nov. is most diagnostically recognized by labral chaetotaxy, with only 4 chaetae. The species is true saproxylic form living inside decayed logs of coniferous trees only. P. cassagnaui sp. nov. is easy to distinguish by the presence of complete chaetotaxy of central area of head, presence of microchaetae on furcal remnant and the fusion of tubercles Di on abd. V. P. microchaetosa sp. nov. and P. kedrovayensis sp. nov. are superficially very similar to each other in dorsal chaetotaxy, and differ in number of ordinary chaetae De on abd. IV, trochanter and labium, and in the presence/absence of microchaetae on furcal remnant. P. setosa sp. nov. can be easily identified by one or two additional chaetae on central area of head, a character unknown in other species of the genus. P. conjuncta sp. nov. is characterised by the fusion of tubercles Di on abdomen V, the presence of microchaetae on furcal remnant and developed tubercle on central area of head. In addition, P. mjohjangensis Deharveng & Weiner, 1984 is newly recorded from Russia. An updated key to all world species of Paranura is also provided.
Alternatipathes longispina sp. nov. and Bathypathes longicaulis sp. nov., two black corals (Antipatharia, Schizopathidae) from seamounts in the Western Pacific

Abstract:Members of the order Antipatharia Milne-Edwards & Haime, 1857 are important structural components of hard bottom communities in the shallow and deep seas. However, their diversity in the Western Pacific is poorly known. Here we describe two new species of black corals within the family Schizopathidae Brook, 1889 from the tropical Western Pacific seamounts: Alternatipathes longispina sp. nov. and Bathypathes longicaulis sp. nov. The new species Alternatipathes longispina is characterized by a monopodial and unbranched corallum with the maximum width nearly two times as long as the height, the lower unpinnulated section of stem slightly shorter than the upper pinnulated one, the pinnules decreasing in length from the lowermost ones to the uppermost, and the prominent polypar spines ranging from 0.29 mm to 0.58 mm high, such a feature make the species differ from all congeners. Bathypathes longicaulis sp. nov. is characterized by a monopodial and unbranched corallum with a much longer unpinnulated stem and alternately arranged pinnules along the upper part of stem. It can be distinguished from congeners by its much longer unpinnulated stem, the alternately arranged pinnules, and the number of pinnules. Phylogenetic analyses based on the nuclear internal transcribed spacer region (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2) and three mitochondrial fragments cox3 -IGR- cox1 , trnW -IGR- nad2 and nad5 -IGR- nad1 shows that A. longispina sp. nov. clusters with the type species A. bipinnata , and the genus Alternatipathes is closely related to Umbellapathes . The present phylogenetic trees confirm the polyphyly of Bathypathes and show that B. longicaulis sp. nov. is sister to Telopathes cf. magna MacIsaac & Best, 2013.

Abstract:A new heterotrophic dinoflagellate, Protoperidinium vietnamicum sp. nov. is described from the coastal waters of Vietnam. It is characterized by an elongated, pentagonal to pyriform body in ventral and dorsal view, with moderate dorsoventral compression. Epitheca is tapering into a robust apical horn, which is shorter than the antapical horns. Cingulum is equatorial, descending by about 0.50–0.75 of its width. Sulcus is wide, shallow, and slightly oblique. Plate 1′ is ortho‐type, and intercalary 2a and 3a plates are pentagonal. Plate 1a is quadrangular, having approximately one third the area of plate 3a. Additionally, the new combination Protoperidinium curvicorne (Böhm) comb. nov. is proposed. It is a large cell‐sized species with a round, broad body, and strong dorsoventral compression. Its epitheca narrows abruptly into a slender apical horn strongly tilted towards the ventral side. The cingulum is narrow, shallow, descending by about 1.5–2.0 cingular widths, and strongly inclined relative to the equatorial plane of the cell. The plate 1′ is ortho‐type, and 2a and 3a are pentagonal. Specimens from the type locality of the taxon were examined. Both species are provided with detailed descriptions and are illustrated with line drawings, as well as with light microscopy images and SEM micrographs. An in‐depth discussion and comparison with similar species are presented.

Diagnoses of Two New Species of Parosphromenus (teleostei: Osphronemidae) from Bangka Island and Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Abstract:We describe two new species of Parosphromenus from Indonesia based on morphological and molecular diagnoses. Parosphromenus juelinae, sp. nov., occurs on Bangka Island. Its unpaired fin coloration is similar to that of P. deissneri, but it differs from the latter in having a rounded caudal fin with a non-filamentous branched median ray and a smaller anal fin. Although the new species has the same caudal fin structure as P. bintan, it can be distinguished from the latter by its distinct unpaired fin coloration and the intense red color on the body flanks. Parosphromenus kishii, sp. nov., is found only in a single river system in Kalimantan Tengah. It is distinguished from all other congeners by the unique coloration of its caudal fin. A phylogenetic tree based on the cytochrome b (cytb) gene indicates that the two new species are distinct monophyletic groups constituting distinct phylogenetic branches from their congeners. Cytochrome b Genetic distances between Parosphromenus juelinae, sp. nov., and Parosphromenus kishii, sp. nov., and the other taxa in the phylogenetic tree range from 2.44% to 19.52% and from 8.65% to 17.28%, respectively.
The Vetigastropoda (Mollusca) of Walters Shoal, with descriptions of two new genera and thirty new species

Abstract:The vetigastropod material collected on Walters Shoal during Cruise MD208 of the Tropical Deep-Sea Benthos programme is documented. In total, 50 species were obtained, 30 of which are new and apparently endemic to the seamount. Of the other 20 species, eight are regionally endemic to the south-western Indian Ocean, 11 are more widely distributed in the Indo-West Pacific and one is possibly of deep-water Atlantic origin. The primary affinities of the fauna are with warm temperate South Africa and the tropical western Indian Ocean, but one species is potentially a seamount endemic of southern affinity. A new pseudococculinid genus living on decomposing bird feathers is described, a biogenic substrate association previously unknown in the Mollusca. The following new genera are described: Imbricoscelis gen. nov. and Pterodacna gen. nov. The following new synonyms are proposed: Carinastele wareni Vilvens, 2014 is a synonym of Bruceina cognata (Marshall, 1988); Fluxinella stellaris Bozzetti, 2008 is a synonym of Agagus stellamaris Herbert, 1991.

Abstract:Dorvilleidae is a diverse group of annelids found in many marine environments and also commonly associated with chemosynthetic habitats. One dorvilleid genus, Parougia , currently has 11 described species, of which two are found at vents or seeps: Parougia wolfi and Parougia oregonensis . Eight new Parougia species are recognised and described in this study from collections in the Pacific Ocean, all from whale-falls, hydrothermal vents, or methane seeps at ~600-m depth or greater. The specimens were studied using morphology and phylogenetic analyses of DNA sequences from mitochondrial (cytochrome c oxidase subunit I, 16S rRNA, and cytochrome b ) and nuclear (18S rRNA and histone 3) genes. Six sympatric Parougia spp. were found at Hydrate Ridge, Oregon, while three of the Parougia species occurred at different types of chemosynthetic habitats. Two new species were found over wide geographical and bathymetric ranges. Another dorvilleid genus, Ophryotrocha , has previously been highlighted as diversifying in the deep-sea environment. Molecular phylogeny of the spiny-surfaced species of the dinoflagellate Prorocentrum with the description of P. thermophilum sp. nov. and P. criophilum sp. nov. (Prorocentrales, Dinophyceae)

Abstract:Spiny-surfaced species of Prorocentrum form harmful algal blooms, and its taxonomic identity is obscure due to the size and shape variability. Molecular phylogenies reveal two major clades: one for P. cordatum with sequences mainly retrieved as P. minimum, and the other for P. shikokuense with sequences also retrieved as P. dentatum and P. donghaiense. Several closely related clades still need to be characterized. Here, we provide nuclear SSU and LSU rRNA genes, and nuclear ITS region (ITS1-5.8S gene-ITS2) sequences of the strain CCMP3122 isolated from Florida (initially named P. donghaiense) and strains Prorocentrum sp. RCC6871-2 from the Ross Sea, Antarctica. We describe Prorocentrum thermophilum sp. nov. based on the strain CCMP3122, a species also distributed in the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico, New Zealand, and the Arabian Gulf; and Prorocentrum criophilum sp. nov. based on the strain RCC6872, which is distributed in the Antarctic Ocean and Arctic Sea. Prorocentrum thermophilum is roundish (~14 μm long, ~12 μm wide), with an inconspicuous anterior spine-like prolongation under light microscopy, valves with tiny, short knobs (5-7 per μm2 ), and several (<7) large trichocyst pores (~0.3 μm) in the right valve, as well as smaller pores (~0.15 μm). Prorocentrum criophilum is round in valve view (~11 μm long, 10 μm wide) and asymmetrically roundish in lateral view, the periflagellar area was not discernible under light microscopy, valves with very tiny, short knobs (6-10 per μm2 ), and at least 12 large pores in the right valve. Other potentially undescribed species of spiny-surfaced Prorocentrum are discussed.

Abstract:Two new species of Acanthonautilus Foord, 1896 (family Solenochilidae Hyatt, 1893) from Asselian–Sakmarian reef deposits of the Shakhtau quarry are described. The history of the study of Solenochilidae is briefly discussed, and they are compared with other Paleozoic cephalopods of similar morphology. Morphometric parameters proposed by D. Raup were used for more precise characterization of the new species.

Abstract:Nerillids are small marine annelids, once placed at the artificial group ‘Archiannelida’, which contained all families of the exclusively interstitial polychaetes. Nerillidae is the most species rich family among them, with 71 species grouped into 15 genera, and represents an important component of the interstitial fauna, occupying a wide bathymetric range. Despite its problematic placement among the ‘Archiannelida’ families, the group per se is considered monophyletic. Currently, only two species of Paranerilla are valid, both being reported from the northern hemisphere. It is presented herein as the first description of a species of Paranerilla from tropical waters, named as Paranerilla schiavettii sp. nov., which is also considered as a unique record by the presence of a modified acicular spine in noto- and neuropodia from chaetiger 3–7, not mentioned in its congeners descriptions. Hence, we also propose an emendation on the genus diagnosis to embrace the presence of acicular spines within Paranerilla. So, the presented information complements the current knowledge about the group’s taxonomy and expands its distribution to South Atlantic waters.

Pseudanabaena pruinosa sp. nov. (Pseudanabaenales, Cyanobacteria): an Arctic Pseudanabaena species with branched sheaths and central aerotopes

Abstract:This study focused on polyphasic evaluation of four psychrophilic Pseudanabaena strains collected from extreme environments characterized by freezing temperatures. The strains were isolated from hydroterrestrial and terrestrial ecosystems in Petuniabukta Bay (Billefjorden, Svalbard), growing as icy microbial soil crusts. In addition to their unique ecology, the phylogenetic analyses of 16S rRNA revealed that the strains form a monophyletic clade within the Pseudanabaena sensu stricto cluster; this clade was unambiguously separated from the other Pseudanabaena infrageneric units, showing <98.5% 16S rRNA sequence identity with the other Pseudanabaena strains available in GenBank and possessing a unique and different D1 ITS region. Polyphasic evaluation of these four strains led to the description of the new species Pseudanabaena pruinosa sp. nov. which can be morphologically distinguished by light microscopy by several unique apomorphic traits not previously detected in Pseudanabaena . These traits include: production of widened, anastomotic branched sheaths enveloping several trichomes into a filament, heteropolar filaments with long trichomes with more than 20 cells, richly pseudobranched filaments forming tree-like structures, production of both polar and central aerotopes, and ability to produce swollen cells and to undergo irregular cell division. The characters observed for Pseudanabaena pruinosa , never reported for other species of Pseudanabaena , substantially widen the taxonomic concept of this genus. Therefore, the description of Pseudanabaena pruinosa sp. nov. with its unique ecology and distinct phylogenetic position and morphological features, is a significant addition to cyanobacteriology and represents a starting point for further research into the evolution of the genus Pseudanabaena . The new combination Pseudanabaena gygaxiana (Casamatta & Johansen) Aleksovski, Krstić & Strunecký is proposed based on16S rRNA, supported by its shared phenotypic traits and similar ecology to Pseudanabaena pruinosa .

Abstract:Integrated use of molecular and morphological methods reveals unexpected diversity in the cosmopolitan siphonophore genus Nanomia. Species delimitation analyses based on COI and 16S sequences suggest up to three distinct lineages in addition to the previously accepted Nanomia bijuga (Delle Chiaje, 1844) and N. cara A. Agassiz, 1865. Here, we describe the North Pacific Nanomia septata sp. n., previously confused with both N. cara and N. bijuga , and provide improved morphological characters for the identification of these three Nanomia species. Phylogenetic analyses suggest two additional, hitherto undescribed clades from Japanese and Chinese waters, respectively, but the lack of morphological material prevents describing these putative species. The geographic distribution of molecularly and/or morphologically verified observations confirm a warm circumglobal distribution for N. bijuga and a boreal North Atlantic distribution for N. cara. Interestingly, four distinct lineages occur in the North Pacific, sometimes in close proximity. These contrasting patterns of distribution raise questions about pelagic speciation processes. Abstract:Two new species of free-living marine nematodes, Metachromadora parobscura sp. nov. and Molgolaimus longicaudatus sp. nov., from mangrove wetlands of Beihai, Guangxi province in China, are described. Metachromadora parobscura sp. nov. is characterized by eight longitudinal rows of somatic setae arranged from the posterior part of the body, loop-shaped amphidial foveae with an open top and double contours, pharynx with bipartite cuticularized internal cavity, spicules with well-developed capitulum, gubernaculum canoe-shaped, without apophysis, 6–8 precloacal tubular supplements, and a short, conical tail with two ventral protuberances. It could be easily distinguished from the known species by spicule length and numbers of precloacal supplements. Molgolaimus longicaudatus sp. nov. is characterized by short cephalic setae, relatively small amphidial fovea, slender spicules ventrally bent with pronounced hooked capitulum and tapered distal end, two poriform precloacal supplements, and a relatively long conico-cylindrical tail. It differs from other species by the shape of spicules and long tail. Nearly full-length SSU sequences (1542–1592 bp) of the two species were provided, and phylogenetic trees based on maximum likelihood analyses supported the taxonomic position of the two new species. The combined use of traditional morphology-based taxonomy and molecular approaches has been proven to be a good choice for identification of free-living nematodes.

Abstract:Four adult females of a rare benthic/epiphytic harpacticoid copepod species of the genus Peltidium Philippi, 1839 were collected from insular zooplankton samples obtained at Revillagigedo National Park, Mexico. They were identified as Peltidium nayarit Suárez-Morales & Jarquín-González, 2013 with type location (and the single previously known distribution site) at Playa Careyeros ( 20°46'59.46"N, 105°30'35.48"W ), Nayarit, Mexico. We provide a complementary description of this species including new details of antennules, caudal rami, legs 1 and 5, and cuticular ornamentation using scanning electron microscopy observations. Peltidium nayarit has a dark reddish-pink coloration allegedly mimicking the color of the macroalgae where they live, but specimens collected in the present study were obtained from sea surface zooplankton net tows. The record of Peltidium nayarit in the Revillagigedo Islands represents the southwestern-most record of the genus in the Americas and the second record for Mexico.

Abstract:Marimermithid nematodes parasitising invertebrates are mainly found in the deep-sea environments. Several adult and juvenile specimens marimermithids of the genus Aborjinia have been found in bottom sediments and inside Polychaeta during recent cruises to the Kuril-Kamchatka trench and the Kuril Basin (the Sea of Okhotsk). New species are described based on integrative study. Aborjinia profunda sp. nov. differs from A. eulagiscae by the location of the ventral gland cell bodies (posterior to the nerve ring vs posterior to the cardia), by the smaller body size (23–28 mm vs 103–132 mm) and shorter tail (193–263 μm vs 500–850 μm). BI and ML phylogenetic analyses based on 18S and 28S rDNA suggest that genus Aborjinia belongs to the family Leptosomatidae . Based on molecular and morphological characters the new genus Paraborjinia gen. nov. is proposed for A. corallicola . Within the family Leptosomatidae the new genus differs from all genera except Aborjinia by its endoparasitic lifestyle and hologonic ovaries. Paraborjinia gen. nov. differs from Aborjinia by the position of cephalic sensitive organs (outer labial and cephalic papillae in two separate circles vs outer labial and cephalic papillae in one circle) and by the parasitic adult (vs free-living in Aborjinia ).

Abstract:Batellopsis paula gen. et sp. nov., a new hexactinellid-associated alpheid shrimp, is described based on a single specimen collected at a depth of 477-503 m north of Île des Pins, New Caledonia. Batellopsis gen. nov. is part of a clade of four genera all containing hexactinellid-associated species, for which a molecular phylogeny is presented. The evolution of several morphological characters, including orbital teeth, a bulgefossa system on the fingers of the first pereiopod chela, and groups of microserrulate setae on the second pereiopod chela, is discussed in light of phylogenetic results.

Abstract:We describe here a new species of Amphictene (Annelida, Polychaeta, Pectinariidae) from a depth of 1160 m off Kushiro, East Hokkaido, Japan. Amphictene hokkaido sp. nov. is characterized by the presence of following characters: a pair of ventral lappets in segment 1; ventro-median lobes in segments 2–4; anterior conical or rounded lappets on ventro-lateral lobe of segment 2; dorso-lateral pads in segments 3 and 4; 17 segments with chaetae on notopodia, 13 segments with uncini on neuropodia; notopodia in segment 21 with notopodial lappets beneath chaetal tuft; neuropodial uncini with 4–5 main teeth and subrostral process on basal prow; 7–9 pairs of scaphal hooks; scaphe with anterior median lobe and four pairs of lateral lobes; anal lobe with an anal cirrus and a row of postero-ventral minute cirri. We provide a diagnostic key to species of the genus.

Abstract:During surveys worldwide, we collected adult and larval specimens of Pseudopolydora Czerniavsky, 1881 similar to P. achaeta Radashevsky & Hsieh, 2000 and P. rosebelae Radashevsky & Migotto, 2009 far from their type localities in Taiwan and Brazil, respectively. Analysis of sequence data of five gene fragments: mitochondrial COI and 16S rDNA, nuclear 18S rDNA and 28S rDNA, and Histone 3 (3114 bp in total) of individuals from Nha Trang Bay (Vietnam), São Paulo (Brazil), Florida (USA), and the Caribbean Sea (Martinique) confirmed their conspecificity with P. achaeta from Taiwan. Based on the morphology, we also report this species for the first time for the East Sea (South Korea) and provide new records for the north-western part of the Sea of Japan (Russia). The analysis also showed the conspecificity of worms from Vietnam with P. rosebelae from Brazil. Based on the morphology, we also report P. rosebelae for the first time for the Caribbean Sea (Belize), South China Sea (Thailand), and Hawaii. Developed pelagic larvae of P. achaeta and P. rosebelae from Nha Trang Bay are described and illustrated. A worm from the Great Barrier Reef (Queensland, Australia) earlier identified as P . cf. rosebelae , is referred to the new species Pseudopolydora nivea sp. nov. Following our earlier hypothesis about the origin of Pseudopolydora in the Indo-West Pacific Ocean, we explain the occurrence of these worms, including Pseudopolydora floridensis Delgado-Blas, 2008, on the Atlantic coasts of North and South America by unintentional transportation in ballast water, followed by successful invasions. We assume that the penetration of warm waters of the East China Sea through the Korea Strait and the warming of the waters of the Sea of Japan have led to the extension of the range of tropical-subtropical P. achaeta to the north-western part of the Sea of Japan.
