Abstract:The electric-voltage-modulated magnetism in multiferroic heterostructures, also known as the converse magnetoelectric (ME) coupling, has drawn increasing research interest recently owing to its great potential applications in future low-power, high-speed electronic and/or spintronic devices, such as magnetic memory and computer logic. In this article, based on combined theoretical analysis and experimental demonstration, we investigate the film size dependence of such converse ME coupling in multiferroic magnetic/ferroelectric heterostructures, as well as exploring the interaction between two relating coupling mechanisms that are the interfacial strain and possibly the charge effects. We also briefly discuss some issues for the next step and describe new device prototypes that can be enabled by this technology.

Abstract:Abstract Magnetoelectric coupling, as a fundamental physical nature and with the potential to add functionality to devices while also reducing energy consumption, has been challenging to be probed in freestanding membranes or two-dimensional materials due to their instability and fragility. In this paper, we report a magnetoelectric coupling probed by optical second harmonic generation with external magnetic field, and show the manipulation of the ferroelectric and antiferromagnetic orders by the magnetic and thermal fields in BiFeO 3 films epitaxially grown on the substrates and in the freestanding ones. Here we define an optical magnetoelectric-coupling constant, denoting the ability of controlling light-induced nonlinear polarization by the magnetic field, and found the magnetoelectric-coupling was suppressed by strain releasing but remain robust against thermal fluctuation for freestanding BiFeO 3 .

Abstract:Strain-coupled magnetoelectric (ME) phenomena in piezoelectric / ferromagnetic thin-film bilayers are a promising paradigm for sensors and information storage devices, where strain is utilized to manipulate the magnetization of the ferromagnetic film. In-plane magnetization rotation with an electric field across the film thickness has been challenging due to the virtual elimination of in-plane piezoelectric strain by substrate clamping, and to the requirement of anisotropic in-plane strain in two-terminal devices. We have overcome both of these limitations by fabricating lithographically patterned devices with a piezoelectric membrane on a soft substrate platform, in which in-plane strain is freely generated, and a patterned edge constraint that transforms the nominally isotropic piezoelectric strain into the required uniaxial strain. We fabricated 500 nm thick, (001) oriented [Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_3$]$_{0.7}$-[PbTiO$_3$]$_{0.3}$ (PMN-PT) unclamped piezoelectric membranes with ferromagnetic Ni overlayers. Guided by analytical and numerical continuum elastic calculations, we designed and fabricated two-terminal devices exhibiting Ni magnetization rotation in response to an electric field across the PMN-PT. Similar membrane heterostructures could be used to apply designed strain patterns to many other materials systems to control properties such as superconductivity, band topology, conductivity, and optical response.

Abstract:Abstract Magnetoelectric composites and heterostructures integrate magnetic and dielectric materials to produce new functionalities, e.g., magnetoelectric responses that are absent in each of the constituent materials but emerge through the coupling between magnetic order in the magnetic material and electric order in the dielectric material. The magnetoelectric coupling in these composites and heterostructures is typically achieved through the exchange of magnetic, electric, or/and elastic energy across the interfaces between the different constituent materials, and the coupling effect is measured by the degree of conversion between magnetic and electric energy in the absence of an electric current. The strength of magnetoelectric coupling can be tailored by choosing suited materials for each constituent and by geometrical and microstructural designs. In this article, we discuss recent progresses on the understanding of magnetoelectric coupling mechanisms and the design of magnetoelectric heterostructures guided by theory and computation. We outline a number of unsolved issues concerning magnetoelectric heterostructures. We compile a relatively comprehensive experimental dataset on the magnetoelecric coupling coefficients in both bulk and thin-film magnetoelectric composites and offer a perspective on the data-driven computational design of magnetoelectric composites at the mesoscale microstructure level.

Abstract:Ferromagnet/ferroelectric/normal-metal superlattices are proposed to realize the large room-temperature magnetoelectric effect. Spin-dependent electron screening is the fundamental mechanism at the microscopic level. We also predict an electric control of magnetization in this structure. The naturally broken inversion symmetry in our tricomponent structure introduces a magnetoelectric coupling energy of PM2. Such a magnetoelectric coupling effect is general in ferromagnet/ferroelectric heterostructures, independent of particular chemical or physical bonding, and will play an important role in the field of multiferroics.

Abstract:The strong strain-mediated magnetoelectric (ME) coupling found in thin-film ME heterostructures has attracted an ever-increasing interest and enables realization of a great number of integrated multiferroic devices, such as magnetometers, mechanical antennas, RF tunable inductors and filters. This paper first reviews the thin-film characterization techniques for both piezoelectric and magnetostrictive thin films, which are crucial in determining the strength of the ME coupling. After that, the most recent progress on various integrated multiferroic devices based on thin-film ME heterostructures are presented. In particular, rapid development of thin-film ME magnetometers has been seen over the past few years. These ultra-sensitive magnetometers exhibit extremely low limit of detection (sub-pT/Hz1/2) for low-frequency AC magnetic fields, making them potential candidates for applications of medical diagnostics. Other devices reviewed in this paper include acoustically actuated nanomechanical ME antennas with miniaturized size by 1–2 orders compared to the conventional antenna; integrated RF tunable inductors with a wide operation frequency range; integrated RF tunable bandpass filter with dual H- and E-field tunability. All these integrated multiferroic devices are compact, lightweight, power-efficient, and potentially integrable with current complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology, showing great promise for applications in future biomedical, wireless communication, and reconfigurable electronic systems.

Abstract:Multiferroic heterostrcture composed of ferromagnetic and ferroelectric phase has recently attracted ever-increasing amount of interest due to its strong magnetoelectric coupling at room temperature [1-3]. In particular, the strain-mediated magnetoelectric (ME) coupling arising from the combined piezoelectric and magnetoelastic effect has shown a large modification of the magnetic anisotropy of the ferromagnetic layer by the application of electric field. This enables various applications including low power spintronics, voltage tunable microwave devices, magnetic sensors and etc [4, 5].

Abstract:Magnetoelectric (ME) heterostructures are widely studied to realize functional applications, such as magnetometers, ME random access memory (MERAM), ME antennas, energy harvesters, and voltage microwave devices. A good understanding of the nonlinearity of ME heterostructures can lead to potentially improved performance. Here, we present an investigation into the voltage-driven nonlinear phenomena of a ME heterostructure near its electromechanical resonance. The Stoner-Wohlfarth model and Duffing equation are used to study the Delta E effect in amorphous Metglas alloy and the nonlinear behavior of a ME heterostructure, respectively. Then, the dependence of the nonlinearity on bias field, driving voltage, mechanical quality factor, and the frequency sweeping direction are systematically studied and verified. Experimental results show that spring-hardening and -softening behavior is separately obtained at bias fields of 25 Oe and 50 Oe, respectively. In addition, hysteresis is observed when sweeping the frequency forward and then backward at a driving voltage of 5 V; this agrees well with qualitative analysis. This work provides a route to induce, control, and possibly exploit the nonlinear behavior of ME devices, such as magnetic-field energy harvesters and ME sensors and antennas.

Abstract:Due to their unique magnetoelectric coupling effect, composite multiferroic materials have significant potential in multifunctional devices (especially magnetoelectric devices) and have already garnered considerable attention. To fulfil the application requirements, improving the magnetoelectric coupling effect at room temperature has grown up to be a primary area of research. In this paper, we present a novel composite multiferroic material system: multiferroic fluids. The fluids are created by dispersing multiferroic particles in an insulating base fluid, exhibiting a strong magnetoelectric coupling effect under external fields. We investigate the physical mechanism behind the magnetoelectric coupling effect, whereby the multiferroic particles arrange themselves into a structure resembling a chain when subjected to a magnetic or electric field. The clamping effect between these chains results in an induced polarization, which, in turn, displays the magnetoelectric coupling effect. It can be concluded that there are several factors that can influence the magnetoelectric coupling effect, such as the magnetic/electric phase, structure, particle size, molar ratio, fluid viscosity, and volume fraction, as well as external factors, such as magnetic/electric field strength. Based on their magnetoelectric and rheological properties, multiferroic fluids are believed to have potential applications such as magnetoelectric storage, sensors, photovoltaics, biomedicine, optical switches, and devices based on magnetorheological and electrorheological fluids. However, further research and exploration are required. Finally, we propose some challenging issues in multiferroic fluids that need to be addressed.

Although the nature of the interfaces remains to be unraveled, such cross coupling can be utilized to manipulate the magnetization (or polarization) with an electric (or magnetic) field, known as a converse (or direct) magnetoelectric effect. It can be exploited to significantly improve the performance of or/and add new functionalities to many existing or emerging devices such as memory devices, tunable microwave devices, sensors, etc. The exciting technological potential, along with the rich physical phenomena at the interface, has sparked intensive research on multiferroic heterostructures for more than a decade. Abstract:The ever increasing demand for ultralow power electronics has propelled the exploration of novel multiferroics for realizing voltage control of magnetism in an energy efficient manner. Epitaxial multiferroic heterostructures, possessing a strong latticecoupled mechanical interface and allowing an electric field (E-field) significantly modulating spin, charge, lattice, and orbital order parameters, have drawn much attention for creating novel magnetoelectric (ME) coupling effects. In this paper, we review the recent progress on control of ME properties in epitaxial multiferroic heterostructures, including their novel physical properties, various strong interfacial ME interactions, and potential applications. Meanwhile, the essential interfacial couplings, allowing cross-tuning of lattice and charge-coupled parameters, have been extensively reviewed. Electric tuning of magnetism in epitaxial multiferroic heterostructures provides a great platform to develop lightweight, compact, and energy-efficient spintronic or electronic devices.
Enhancing Converse Magnetoelectric Coupling Through Strain Engineering in Artificial Multiferroic Heterostructures

Abstract:Magnetoelectric materials present a unique opportunity for electric field-controlled magnetism. Even though strain-mediated multiferroic heterostructures have shown unprecedented increase in magnetoelectric coupling compared to single-phase materials, further improvements must be made before ultra-low power memory, logic, magnetic sensors, and wide spectrum antennas can be realized. This work presents how magnetoelectric coupling can be enhanced by simultaneously exploiting multiple strain engineering approaches in heterostructures composed of Fe0.5Co0.5/Ag multilayers on (011) Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O3-Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 piezoelectric crystals. When grown and measured under strain, these heterostructures exhibit an effective converse magnetoelectric coefficient in the order of 10-5 s m-1: the highest directly measured, non-resonant value to-date. This response occurred at room temperature and at low electric fields (<2 kV cm-1). This large effect is enabled by magnetization reorientation caused by changing the magnetic anisotropy with strain from the substrate and the use of multilayered magnetic materials to minimize the internal stress from deposition. Additionally, the coercive field dependence of the magnetoelectric response under strain suggests contributions from domain-mediated magnetization switching modified by voltage-induced magnetoelastic anisotropy. This work highlights how multicomponent strain engineering enables enhanced magnetoelectric coupling in heterostructures and provides an approach to realize energy-efficient magnetoelectric applications.

Abstract:Magnetoelectrics are witnessing an ever-growing success toward the voltage-controlled magnetism derived from inorganic materials. However, these inorganic materials have predominantly focused on the ferroelectromagnetism at solid-to-solid interfaces and suffered several drawbacks, including the interface-sensitive coupling mediators, high-power electric field, and limited chemical tunability. Here, we report a promising design strategy to shift the paradigm of next-generation molecular magnetoelectrics, which relies on the integration between molecular magnetism and electric conductivity though an in situ cross-linking strategy. Following this approach, we demonstrate a versatile and efficient synthesis of flexible molecular-based magnetoelectronics by cross-linking of magnetic coordination networks that incorporate conducting chain building blocks. The as-grown compounds feature an improved critical temperature up to 337 K and a room-temperature magnetism control of low-power electric field. Abstract:Functional Materials Letters, Ahead of Print. Multiferroic materials have a unique ability to combine two or more ferroic orders within the same phase. Specifically, magnetoelectric (ME) materials exhibit a unique combination of three ferroic orders in their response to magnetic, elastic, and electric fields. This study focuses on a finite element investigation of a hybrid multilayer ME coupling, incorporating two different magnetostrictive materials in a single composite. The composite includes Nickel, exhibiting negative magnetostriction, leading to an increase in pre-compressive stress, easy machinability, and cost-effectiveness. Additionally, Terfenol-D is utilized due to its characteristic property of high magnetostrictive strain when exposed to an external magnetic field. The result of this study shows that this hybrid ME structure has an ME coefficient of 804 mV/cm ⋅ Oe without pre-stress and ME coefficient is increased to 32.64 V/cm ⋅ Oe by applying pre-stress while retaining cost-effectiveness. The analysis in this particular work also suggests promising applications for energy harvesting and magnetic field sensing.

Abstract:Electric field-induced magnetization switching in multiferroics is intriguing for both fundamental studies and potential technological applications. Here, we review the recent developments on electric field-induced magnetization switching in multiferroic heterostructures. Particularly, we study the dynamics of magnetization switching between the two stable states in a shape-anisotropic single-domain nanomagnet using stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation in the presence of thermal fluctuations. For magnetostrictive nanomagnets in strain-coupled multiferroic composites, such study of magnetization dynamics, contrary to steady-state scenario, revealed intriguing new phenomena on binary switching mechanism. While the traditional method of binary switching requires to tilt the potential profile to the desired state of switching, we show that no such tilting is necessary to switch successfully since the magnetization's excursion out of magnet's plane can generate a built-in asymmetry during switching. We also study the switching dynamics in multiferroic heterostructures having magnetoelectric coupling at the interface and magnetic exchange coupling that can facilitate to maintain the direction of switching with the polarity of the applied electric field. We calculate the performance metrics like switching delay and energy dissipation during switching while simulating LLG dynamics. The performance metrics turn out to be very encouraging for potential technological applications.

Abstract:Due to the strong coupling between electrical polarization and magnetization, magnetoelectric materials show promising features for low-power spintronics and ultra-sensitive magnetic sensors. Compared to the conventional tunning of magnetoelectricity, this work presents a modulation of magnetic and electric orders in magnetoelectric material through a quasi-static mechanical strain. To acquire this, linear magnetoelectric Cr2O3 film is fabricated epitaxially on muscovite substrates. Taking the natural flexibility of muscovite, applying a strain to the heterostructure is feasible via mechanical bending. In the bending experiment, the magnetization of Cr2O3 film can be enhanced significantly, and the techniques of X-ray absorption dichroism unveil insights with support from theoretical predictions. Besides, the electric polarization and magnetoelectric coupling of Cr2O3 can also be adjusted by mechanical bending. This work offers a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between quasi-static strain and magnetic and electrical behaviors and opens a new aspect of the combination between magnetoelectric materials and flexible substrates for future development.

The demand for the traditional mechanical spring is eliminated by utilizing a magnetic levitation mechanism. When the suspending magnet moves relative to the ME transducers, the piezoelectric plates deform in shear mode owing to the magnetostriction of the magnetostrictive plates, and large shear piezoelectric effect is induced. Consequently, larger voltages can be produced by the presented device. The kinetic equation of the energy harvesting system is derived and solved, and the maximum output power is obtained based on the vibration rule and the variation of the sensed magnetic field. The feasibility of the heterostructure is experimentally verified. The maximum load power increases with acceleration. A maximum output power of 1.46mW is generated across a 1.25MΩ resistive load at the acceleration of 0.7g. The generated energy of the heterostructure is sufficient to drive a low-power electronic device. Improvements are feasible, which allow an obvious increase of the maximum output powers by employing a Halbach array with a particular arrangement of the magnets.

Abstract:Materials that generate electrical signals upon exposure to a well-controlled stimuli are high desirable. In that context, magnetoelectrics are unusual in the sense that the stimulus may be applied remotely (and wirelessly) without recourse to any physical contact. Wireless energy harvesting, remotely triggered biomedical agents, soft robots among others are some of the applications of such materials. The magnetoelectric property however is somewhat elusive in natural materials and artificial composites designed to exhibit this effect are invariably hard materials, require a pre-existing magnetic field and only exhibit a non-trivial coupling at high frequencies. Our recent experiments (presented elsewhere) demonstrated a facile route to create highly deformable soft magnetoeletric materials predicated on the concept of programmable hard magnetic soft materials with embedded immobile electric charges (electrets). In this work, we offer a nonlinear theoretical framework to both understand the emergent magnetoelectric effect in this class of soft materials as well as to design novel structures and devices with tailored functionality. Specifically, we are able to show that mechanical strain convects residual electrical and magnetic field states to mediate an unprecedented strong magnetoelectric coupling that is independent of the applied external magnetic field and retains its potency at low frequencies. We analytically solve simple illustrative examples to establish insights and present a finite element approach to handle complexities that may be otherwise intractable. The predictions of our theory agree very well with published experiments.
