Abstract:
Lithium-ion battery technology has been widely used in grid energy storage for supporting renewable energy consumption and smart grids. Safety accidents related to fires and explosions caused by LIB thermal runaway frequently occur, seriously threatening human safety and hindering further applications. Here we propose a safety warning method for MW-level LIB stations through venting acoustic signal, with the advantages of fast implementation, high sensitivity and low cost. To verify the effectiveness of the above method, an overcharge-induced thermal runaway experiment is conducted using commercial battery cells and modules in a real energy storage cabin. The results show that thermal runaway could be accurately and quickly detected through the venting acoustic signal, and timely actions can effectively suppress the development of thermal accumulation. Considering that many kinds of interference noise exist, a denoising method based on spectral subtraction is constructed after analysing the noise. To eliminate similar interference signals after denoising, an acoustic signal recognition classifier is built using the XGBoost model. The recognition accuracy can reach 92.31%. The above safety venting method based on venting acoustics provides a new approach to improve the safety level of grid energy storage.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to address the safety issues caused by thermal runaway in lithium-ion battery energy storage stations (BESS) in grid applications. Specifically, lithium-ion batteries can generate a large amount of heat under fault conditions such as overcharging and internal short circuits. Due to the sealed design, poor heat dissipation can lead to thermal runaway, which may further cause fires or explosions. These accidents not only threaten human safety but also hinder the further development of lithium-ion battery energy storage technology. To solve this problem, the paper proposes a method for safety warning of lithium-ion battery energy storage stations through exhaust sound signal detection. This method has the advantages of rapid implementation, high sensitivity, and low cost. Researchers verified the effectiveness of the method through overcharge experiments in a real energy storage cabin. The experimental results show that thermal runaway can be accurately and quickly detected through exhaust sound signals, and timely measures can be taken to effectively suppress the development of heat accumulation. In addition, considering the presence of various interference noises in the energy storage cabin, the paper also constructs a denoising algorithm based on spectral subtraction to eliminate noise interference during normal operation. To further eliminate similar interference signals after denoising, researchers used the XGBoost model to build a sound signal recognition classifier. The recognition accuracy of this classifier reached 92.31%, providing a new approach to improving the safety of grid energy storage systems.
