Abstract:Conventional microwave imagers usually require either time-consuming data acquisition, or complicated reconstruction algorithms for data post-processing, making them largely ineffective for complex in-situ sensing and monitoring. Here, we experimentally report a real-time digital-metasurface imager that can be trained in-situ to generate the radiation patterns required by machine-learning optimized measurement modes. This imager is electronically reprogrammed in real time to access the optimized solution for an entire data set, realizing storage and transfer of full-resolution raw data in dynamically varying scenes. High-accuracy image coding and recognition are demonstrated in situ for various image sets, including handwritten digits and through-wall body gestures, using a single physical hardware imager, reprogrammed in real time. Our electronically controlled metasurface imager opens new venues for intelligent surveillance, fast data acquisition and processing, imaging at various frequencies, and beyond.

Abstract:To realize an optical encryption with high comprehensive performance, the method is proposed based on a single spatial multiplexing metasurface with the combination of single pixel imaging and holography. By using single pixel imaging as the addressing key of metasurface holography, the method can improve the security and meet a wide range of plaintext information coverage. Compared with the traditional holographic technology, metasurface holography is a promising technology due to the large field angle and high spatial resolution. Thanks to the precise control of phase, amplitude, polarization and so on, metasurface holography provides a flexible platform for light modulation, optical encryption and so on. Besides, the process of image reconstruction by single pixel imaging is similar to a form of encoding and decoding, which is realized by calculating the correlation between a series of modulation patterns and their corresponding intensity signals. In this work, an optical encryption scheme is proposed based on spatial multiplexing metasurface, which depends on the combination of holographic technology and single pixel imaging technology. In the encryption scheme, the image transmitted by single pixel imaging based on metasurface is used as the addressing key of holography. Besides, illuminating different positions of the metasurface can generate different holographic reconstructed images, and there is 50% information overlapped between adjacent sub‐holograms. This work makes use of the spatial multiplexing property of metasurface, which can complete different functions, paving the way for the application in the field of optical imaging encryption and information security.

Abstract:Metasurface holography, visual cryptography (VC), and computational ghost imaging (CGI) are integrated to propose an encryption scheme, where both keys and ciphertext of CGI are hidden into the secret sharing metasurfaces in a high compression ratio of 4. Two images can be decoded by obtaining keys (i.e., superimposing two meta‐images directly), and cipherimages (i.e., read from piece of meta‐images). Exploiting various degrees of freedom of light, metasurfaces have unique advantages in multiple‐channel information storage and demonstration, which thereby provides a novel platform to convey the keys and cipher images for different encryptions. Following the secret sharing principle of visual cryptography (VC), the authors here successfully embed both the keys and cipher images of computational ghost imaging (CGI) encryption into the holographic metasurface‐images (meta‐images). The decryption process starts with key retrieval via optical observation of overlapped meta‐images, followed by a compressive CGI calculation to reconstruct the target images according to the obtained key and steganographic cipher images with a high compression ratio of 4. By integrating metasurface imaging, VC, and CGI, the authors' proposed encryption scheme exempts conventional key distribution and transmission of CGI, enhances the security by secret sharing of VC, and increases the amount of hiding data contained in meta‐images with compressive sensing.

Abstract:Information security is of great importance in every aspect of life, spawning numerous modern cryptographic strategies to protect data from stealing and deciphering. Among them, optical encryption is an excellent candidate with regard to its unique features such as parallel processing, high speed, low-power consumption and the abundant degrees of freedom (DoFs) of the photon for information encoding and decoding. However, the optical cryptographic systems based on conventional optical components are commonly restricted to exploiting a limited number of photon dimensions. The advent of the metasurface, which is capable of manipulating photons with full DoFs at a subwavelength scale, provides a new generation of versatile platforms for optical encryption techniques. Having almost exhausted the existing DoFs for information multiplexing, considerable attention has been paid to exploring new encryption algorithms and encoding optical information with the time domain. Here, we review recent research efforts devoted to metasurface-empowered photon cryptography in the DoF space, the algorithm space, and the spatiotemporal domain. The design principles, typical encryption strategies and potential applications are introduced in detail. We also discuss the challenges and provide an outlook on this emerging field.

Abstract:Multi-channel information encryption technology has been implemented by optical metasurfaces owing to their superior ability to control the phase, amplitude, wavelength and polarization of incident light. However, current metasurface-based multi-channel encryption technologies suffer from information leakage in non-full channel decoding processes. To better increase the security of the encrypted information, we develop a secret shared phase encoding scheme by combining a visual secret sharing scheme with a metasurface-based phase-encoding technique. Our method achieves its high-concealment through mapping the target image into a set of unrecognizable phase-only keys that are subsequently encoded by a multi-wavelength metasurface. In the decryption process, the secret information can be reconstructed only by decoding and stacking all the wavelength channels of the metasurface. At the same time, chaotic images can be extracted from the other channels without revealing any original information. The simulated results and the theoretical analysis show the strong robustness and high security of our encryption setup, which is sure to find applications in emerging optical encryption schemes.

Abstract:This work proposes and demonstrates a novel optical encryption scheme based on single‐sized nanostructures by introducing camouflage strategy into Malus metasurfaces design processes to store multiple meta‐images in different encryption levels, which can ensure that even if the camouflage information is decrypted, the real information is still safe. The superior capability of light manipulation makes optical metasurfaces capable of high‐quality multichannel displays, demonstrating great potential in high‐security optical encryption. Different from the previous multichannel nanoprinting metasurfaces based on the sophisticated nanostructure design, Malus metasurface can obtain multichannel meta‐images only by arranging the orientations of single‐sized nanostructures and thus have gained great attention. Here, an optical encryption scheme based on single‐sized nanostructures is proposed by introducing camouflage strategy into Malus metasurfaces design processes to store multiple meta‐images in different encryption levels. Experimental results demonstrate that the preset camouflage meta‐image can be decoded by inserting a filter and a polarizer in the incident light path, while the decryption of real meta‐image requires not only the insertion of a filter and polarizer in the incident optical path, but also the insertion of an analyzer in the outgoing optical path and setting them to the specific polarization direction. This work eliminates the consistency of encryption level in conventional multi‐channel Malus metasurface, builds the differences of preset camouflage information and real information in decryption difficulty, and easily merges with other works, thereby paving a new way toward a high‐security optical encryption technology.

Abstract:Optical encryption plays an increasingly important role in the field of information security owing to its parallel processing capability and low power consumption. Employing the ultrathin metasurfaces in optical encryption has promoted the miniaturization and multifunctionality of encryption systems. Nevertheless, with the few number of degrees of freedom (DoFs) multiplexed by single metasurface, both key space and encoding space are limited. To address this issue, we propose a high-security and large-capacity optical encryption scheme based on perfect high-dimensional Poincaré beams with expanded DoFs. By cascading two arrayed metasurfaces, more beam properties can be independently engineered, which gives rise to the extensively expanded key and encoding spaces. Our work provides a promising strategy for optical encryption with high security level and large information capacity and might facilitate the applications of Poincaré beams in optical communications and quantum information.

Abstract:Information security holds paramount importance in the contemporary information society. Here, a novel cryptography method is proposed based on the multi-wavelength complex-amplitude metasurface, which can achieve a high security level by generating a frequency-selective key as an additional layer of protection. Moreover, the quality of the decrypted holographic images can be significantly improved by employing the complex-amplitude encoding method and the modified visual secret sharing scheme, which adopts a new superposition operator to prevent fidelity loss. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, a prototype metasurface sample is designed, fabricated, and characterized, where the measured results agree very well with the numerical ones and the design goals. The proposed method can reinforce security level and improve fidelity of the decrypted message, rendering it appealing for applications in communication and anti-counterfeiting. Abstract:Information security is particularly important in the information age. Traditional optical encryption devices rely on phase, amplitude, and even polarization modulation, with the phase typically produced by the phase accumulation effect of diffractive elements in space, which requires a gradual change in the medium’s refractive index and thickness to achieve. This also causes the shortcomings of traditional optical encryption devices such as large volume, high design complexity and poor resolution, which is not conducive to miniaturization. Metasurface, as a two-dimensional form of metamaterials, has artificial sub-wavelength structure, which can flexibly manipulate the phase, amplitude, wavelength and orbital angular momentum of electromagnetic waves by changing the shape, size, spin and arrangement of meta-atoms. Due to the design flexibility of the metasurface and its arbitrary wavefront operation, more and more research is linking it to efficient and reliable encryption devices in the future. This paper introduces the control of metasurface on single dimension, double dimension and three-dimensional degree of freedom of electromagnetic wave to realize information encryption, and other dimensions such as spatial frequency control and some common computational imaging encryption algorithms, and analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of these encryption methods. Compared with traditional optical encryption devices, metasurface encryption has the advantages of compact, high resolution and high security factor, and has a good development prospect.

Abstract:The remarkable capability in regulating light polarization or amplitude at the nanoscale makes metasurface a leading candidate in high-resolution image display and optical encryption. Diverse binary or grayscale meta-images were previously shown concealed in a single metasurface, yet they are mostly stored at same encryption level and share an identical decryption key, running the risk of exposing all images once the key is disclosed. Here, we propose a twofold optical display and encryption scheme demonstrating that binary and grayscale meta-images can be concurrently embedded in a nonspatially multiplexed silicon metasurface, and their decryptions demand for drastically different keys. Unlike previous metasurfaces relying on isolated transmission or phase manipulations upon orthogonal linear polarization incidences, this is made possible by exploiting silicon meta-atoms featuring joint transmission amplitude and polarization control at two wavelengths. In detail, the selected two meta-atoms exhibit large polarization-independent transmission difference (∼85 %) at a wavelength of 800 nm, while functioning as the nano-quarter-wave plate at wavelength of 1200 nm. Through elaborate design in simulation, a binary image can be witnessed when the metasurface is merely illuminated by an unpolarized light of wavelength 800 nm or under white light illumination. However, a distinct binary or grayscale image will come into view by inspecting the metasurface with an analyzer and when the incident light is circularly polarized at the wavelength of 1200 nm. Two metasurface samples are fabricated and successfully verified the claims experimentally. The proposed approach is expected to bring new insights to the field of optical display and encryption.

Abstract:Information security is of vital importance in daily life, stimulating various cryptographic strategies to protect data from leaking. Among them, metasurface-based optical encryption is an excellent candidate because of its unique features, including numerous encoding channels and incomparable light-field manipulation ability. However, for state-of-the-art metasurface encryption, it is still critical to further improve its storage efficiency with high security for practical information-storage applications. Here, combining data compression and optical encryption, compression-encrypted meta-optics (CEM) is proposed to improve the regular metasurface storage efficiency by an order of magnitude while maintaining high information security. Utilizing lossless compression algorithms, the plaintexts are re-encoded into nonintuitive ciphertexts and keys with much less data volume (∼1/10), thus providing the first security barrier and increasing storage efficiency. Moreover, the polarization-encrypted metasurfaces also protect the ciphertexts from direct observation, providing a second security barrier. Overall, such a CEM with two security barriers significantly improves the optical storage efficiency and presents a novel route for potential applications in next-generation optical information storage/encryption.

Abstract:Optical metasurfaces enable us to engineer the electromagnetic space and control light propagation at an unprecedented level, offering a powerful tool to achieve modulation of light over multiple physical dimensions. Here, we demonstrate a Sb 2 S 3 phase-change metasurface platform that allows active manipulation of both the amplitude and the phase. In particular, we implement dynamic nanoprinting and holographic image display through the tuning of the crystallization levels of this phase-change material. The Sb 2 S 3 nanobricks tailored to perform the amplitude, geometric, and propagation-phase modulation constitute the dynamic meta-atoms in the multiplexed metasurfaces. Using the incident polarizations as decoding keys, the encoded information can be reproduced in the form of a nanoprinted grayscale image in the near field and two holographic images in the far field. These images can be switched on and off by taking advantage of the reversible tunability of the Sb 2 S 3 nanostructure between the amorphous and crystalline states. The proposed phase-change metasurfaces featuring manifold information and multifold encryption promise ultracompact data storage with high capacity and high security, which suggests an exciting direction for modern cryptography and security applications. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevApplied.18.044078 © 2022 American Physical Society

Abstract:Meta-holographic encryption is a potentially important technique for information security. Despite rapid progresses in multi-tasked meta-holograms, the number of information channels available in metasurfaces is limited, making meta-holographic encryption vulnerable to some attacking algorithms. Herein, we demonstrate a re-programmable metasurface that can produce arbitrary holographic images for optical encryption. The encrypted information is divided into two matrices. These two matrices are imposed to the incident light and the metasurface, respectively. While the all-dielectric metasurface is static, the phase matrix of incident light provides additional degrees of freedom to precisely control the eventual functions at will. With a single Si metasurface, arbitrary holographic images and videos have been transported and decrypted. We hope that this work paves a more promising way to optical information encryption and authentication.

Abstract:Optical encryption has attracted attention recently as information security becomes important in modern society. For most encryption methods based on metasurfaces, however, information is encrypted into the metasurfaces of physical forms, limiting information sharing and compatibility with digital information processing technology. Here, we demonstrate an alternative scheme in which information is encrypted on optical images other than metasurfaces, releasing the constraints mentioned above. This is achieved by modulating the spatial frequencies of optical images with metasurfaces. Specifically, information encryption and decryption based on the intensity or phase of spatial frequency have been demonstrated with the developed microscopic Fourier optics technique. The abundance of spatial frequency also promises a flexible multiplexing platform for increasing information capacity, which has been verified by a 4-bit encryption experiment. These findings could enable high-security and high-capacity optical encryption platforms.

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed rapid progresses in information encryption by harnessing different dimensions of light, yet, pushing the capacity of encrypted information is an endless goal. Meta-holographic encryption introduces an efficient method in optical information encryption. Here, we propose a spatial multiplexing encryption technique using cascaded metasurfaces, allowing multiple users to simultaneously access independent encryption information. By employing cascaded metasurfaces, cipher images and corresponding decryption keys can be transferred to unique spatial hologram coordinates for each user, ensuring secure identification of encrypted information. We demonstrate the feasibility of six encrypted channels and analyze the sensitivity to holography spatial location, revealing a low correlation among different channels. Our findings highlight the potential of cascaded metasurfaces in spatial multiplexing encryption, paving the way for high-volume optical information encryption.
