Abstract:Rural tourism is an important part of China's rural development in the new century and the and However,with the problem existing in rural tourism,the concept,significance,classification and development model of rural tourism is immature and controversial in China. The author divides the paper into three parts.In the first part,rural tourism's concept is given.In the second part,taking European rural tourism as an experience,the background of international rural tourism is reviewed in brief.The experience of international rural tourism is studied from several aspects,i.e.from the functional orientation and the classification of rural tourism,from the character and extent of government's interference,form the relationship between municipal government and the country community in rural tourism governance.In the third part,based on the experience of international rural tourism development,combined with Chinese present situation,guided by the policy of sustainable development,the paper concludes that there are salient differences in rural tourism development between mainland China and European countries because of existing tourism administrative system,social and economic condition and cultural tradition etc.However,it is necessary and probable to learn from the international experience to develop China's rural tourism.In the end,some issues including orientation,law and regulation system,community participation,forms and cooperation mechanism are pointed out for further discussion in hope to benefit the development of rural tourism in China.

Abstract:There has been a global upsurge in the study of rural development by using "endogenous development" theory in the past three decades.The paper focuses on the application of endogenous development mode to rural tourism,combining rapid development of rural tourism in our country.The study consists of two parts: 1.We briefly analyze the forming background,practical significance and connotation of endogenous development mode,the main contents of this theory and actor network theory(ANT) as well as the relationship of the two theories.We also introduce the application of ANT to rural development.2.After investigations in Xianhuashan Village,we observe the development of rural tourism based on actor-network theory.Finally both enlightenment and prospect are obtained after discussing the results of the observation.

AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE PATTERNS AND STRATEGIES OF MUTUAL SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF RURAL TOURISM AND ECONOMY

Abstract:Rural tourism is a new travel style that sprang up in our country in the last 10 years. It is an ecotourism activity, which takes the tourism resource of rural areas as the attraction. Rural tourism is an important component in China's rural economy and tourism industry development in this century, and also it is a strong impetus in promoting the rural economy. This paper analyzes the significance of rural tourism in the development of China's rural economy. Firstly, it can create more job opportunities as well as increase the income of peasants. Secondly, it can give strong impetus to the development of some related industry and improve rural industrial restructuring. Thirdly, it can promote farmers' awareness of market economy and renew their conception, thus benefiting the development of rural economy. Finally, it is beneficial to protect traditional rural landscape, rural culture and rural ecological environment, and maintain sustainable development of rural areas. The author also points out the elementary conditions for the mutual sustainable development of rural tourism and its economy. Firstly, better geographical position such as the perimeter of cities or scenic areas, and a lot of markets shares are necessary. Secondly, the special tourism resource and better ecological environment must be attractive to tourists. Finally, governmental support and farmers/ participation are also required. The mutual sustainable development of rural tourism and economy has its strong realistic significance and referential value. It helps to solve the three problems in agriculture that some regions in our country face, and also to achieve the overall construction of a well-off society. In order to maintain the mutual sustainable development of rural tourism and economy, six patterns are put forward. At last, with respect to the types of rural tourism resource, the rural tourism is classified into four types. They are rural nature landscape tourism, the agriculture tourism, folk culture tourism, country settlement and building tourism. And on the basis of these four types of rural tourism, the corresponding measures are proposed.

Abstract:Rural tourism, as a new way of tourism evolved from the combination of ecotourism and agrotourism, has ideological roots in the double regresses to the nature and the life style of ancestors, which are also the original motivations of the tourists taking this tourism form. There is a growing trend of rural tourism in China. The purpose of this paper is to identify such the challenges and problems encountered by the rural tourism businesses in China as limits to the investment and operation scales, disperse in geographical distributions and slack in organizations, repeat in project constructions with a low level, and disorders in market competition, as well as monotony in product designs, environmental declines, urbanization of accommodation establishments, and the badness of credit standings in market, resulting from the unfair distribution of benefits from rural tourism development. To solve these problems, following measurements need to be undertaken, including enhanced conduction, scientific planning and appropriate layout; quality management, service instruction and monitoring ensurence as well as innovations in product design, mechanism and organization structure.

Abstract:Rural tourism in China, has undergone a rapid development in the last three decades. It is an emerging and effective catalyst that promotes industrial restructuring, agricultural development and the upgrading of rural areas. However, there remains little understanding about the core issues of rural tourism in China: the exact connotation, the principles, the development models and the future directions. This review paper identifies the key issues based on literature analysis, national statistics and press reports to form a general picture of the past, the current and the future prospects of China’s rural tourism. The paper firstly addresses the definition, content and principles of rural tourism, and then provides an overview and brief evaluation of the progress and the current development models in China. Finally, based on the analysis of the experiences and problems, the authors sum up with five pathways of the future development of China’s rural tourism from the perspective of rural tourism resources, product, market and promotion.

Abstract:With the accelerating process of urbanization and industrialization and the continuous improvement of the income level of residents, urban residents have a strong demand for leisure and holiday tourism, and have a certain economic basis for leisure tourism. At the same time, urban residents live far from nature, and they are generally eager to return to nature and return to nature. The vast rural areas of China are rich in resources, rich in folk customs, and have the natural and humanistic conditions for developing rural tourism. Therefore, the development of rural tourism just caters to the requirements of urban residents to “return to nature” and experience rural life, providing urban residents with a wide range of leisure and holiday space. Abstract:Peasantry is symbolic of China’s rural poverty, especially in mountainous provinces such as Guizhou. Recent public campaigns in China to modernize rural regions have much focused on organizing peasants to be urbanized, and engaged in higher value services, one of which is tourism. The paper has used Jiuzhou, a small township in Guizhou to examine its rural urbanization process through land value enhancement and human resource redeployment of local workforce. Jiuzhou’s proximity to the famous tourist site, Huangguoshu, and its easy access to a trans-province highway and its own heritage attractions have been an enabling power to raise its economic status. The study has found a close relationship between the urban-based tourism development and the pace of urbanization, and local tourism development has held back local residents to some extent from migrating out. Growth has generated greater demand for goods and services which in turn has stimulated higher levels of consumption pattern. Nevertheless, many state-run travel agencies were reported to be more dedicated to “image engineering” than market competition, and environmental conservation, the key for eco-tourism, has been somehow overlooked.

Abstract:China can effectively promote urban-rural integration and economic and social modernization through new urbanization, which also serves as a strong driver and supporter of the growth of rural tourism. This paper examines the new urbanization and the growth of the rural tourism industry based on the rural revitalization strategy. It does so by using the techniques of literature research, field investigation, information technology retrieval, and excavation. We list the accomplishments of the rural tourism sector at its current stage of development and identify the issues and factors that will affect the sector's future growth. In addition, a coordinated development evaluation index system is built based on a theoretical analysis of rural revitalization strategies and new urbanization, and the corresponding comprehensive score is obtained using the entropy method for research. The index weight of the subsystem for rural revitalization in province A is computed using the entropy weight method. According to the findings, the wealth of life has the smallest weight (0.1117), followed by the prosperity of industry (0.2618), which is the largest on a criterion level. The effective weight of governance is the largest, at 0.2801. This study can serve as a useful resource for fostering rural tourism and advancing rural business.

Abstract:In view of the changes of tourism industry in the background of experience economy, and starting from the perspective that the emotional needs of tourists were boosting and they had paid increasing attention upon experience during the process of travelling, this research tried to find out a new development mode of rural tourism which took identification of tourism resource , subdivision of target market, designing of experience projects and personnel training into consideration. In the process of development, designing and implementation, it emphasized the definiteness of development direction, construction of unique theme, creation of experience atmosphere, showing tourists the charm of countryside in a full and deep way, and consequently highlighted the cultural, recreational and regional feature of rural tourism. What’s more, it should satisfy tourists’ emotional needs with emotional, interactive and personalized tourist products, leave tourists unique experience and good memories, prolong tourists’ stay and enhance their loyalty, so as to generate higher economic benefits, promote rural economic growth and construct harmonious new countryside.
How to Improve Rural Tourism Development in Chinese Suburban Villages? Empirical Findings from a Quantitative Analysis of Eight Rural Tourism Destinations in Beijing

Abstract:Rural tourism has been an important engine for rural development and regeneration. In China, rural tourism is widely encouraged in the less developed regions to mitigate poverty and promote harmonious urban–rural development. Existing research literature finds that the perceptions of stakeholders towards rural tourism development are critical of the final economic and social outcomes. Nonetheless, most research focuses on the perception of a single stakeholder group. In this paper, we fill the research gap by simultaneously examining the perceptions of both the local tourism service providers and the tourists. We select eight Beijing suburban villages that typify the rural tourism development trends in Beijing, and collect sample data from 433 local service providers and 815 tourists. The questionnaire covers a wide range of perceptual variables, with particular focus on how the two stakeholder groups respond differently to the possible approaches to improve rural tourism development. The Partial Least Squares (PLS) regression method is employed to identify the key impact factors for each group. Our test shows that diversifying the tourism products and improving marketing coverage are two approaches that are favoured by both the local service providers and the tourists. However, different concerns are revealed for other approaches, such as improving service quality, increasing accommodation capacity and providing collective tourism activities. We also discover that rural tourism development may cause dramatic social and demographic changes to suburban villages, the impacts of which should be taken into account for development scheme appraisal. This research helps to clarify the policy contexts for rural tourism development and points out the possible priority areas for future research.

Abstract:Rural revitalization has drawn increasing attention from the academia, public and industry. Using remote sensing imagery, semi-structured interviews and non-participant observation, this study explores the content and mechanism of rural spatial reconstruction driven by tourism development in a rural area of China through the lens of cultural connotations of rurality. Results indicate government-led tourism development has transformed the focal village from a traditional rural society based on kinship ties into a commercialized rural tourism community with economic interests at its core. The interplay of space, value, power and capital constitutes the mechanism of spatial reconstruction. Findings emphasize the importance of rurality for the sustainable development of rural tourism and have implications for both governments and developers.

These elements, embodying the history, traditions, customs, and lifestyle of the countryside, offer tourists a chance to deeply understand and experience rural life.
