Abstract:Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the reliability and validation of the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) for late-life depression in Chinese primary care.Methods: In the primary care clinics (PCCs) of Hangzhou city, we recruited 364 older patients (aged >= 60) for the PHQ-9 screening. Then 77 of them were further interviewed with Structured Clinical Interview for DSM Disorders (SCID) for the diagnosis of major depression in late life. Statistic strategies for the feasibility, reliability, validity, and receiver operating characteristic curve were performed.Results: The mean administration time was 7.5 min, and the Cronbach's a was 0.91. The optimal cut-off score of PHQ-9 >= 9 revealed a sensitivity of 0.86, specificity of 0.77, and positive likelihood ratio of 5.73. The area under the curve (AUC) in this study was 0.92 (SD = 0.02, 95% CI 0.88-0.96). The PHQ-2 also revealed good sensitivity (0.84) and specificity (0.90) at the cut-off point >= 3.Conclusions: The PHQ-9 performs well and has acceptable psychometric properties for screening of patients with late-life depression in Chinese primary care settings. Abstract:Introduction The aim of this study was to examine the reliability and validity of the nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) for screening depression in Chinese primary care settings. Methods In 100 randomly selected primary care clinics (PCC) of Hangzhou city, we recruited 2,639 patients (aged 18 years) and applied the PHQ-9 to screen for depression. Then, 280 of them were further interviewed with the Structured Clinical Interview for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual Disorders (SCID) for the diagnosis of major depression. Statistical analysis of the demographic data, reliability, validity and receiveroperator curve were performed. Results The mean administration time was 7 minutes, and the Cronbach's was 0.89. The optimal cutoff score of 10 on the PHQ-9 revealed a sensitivity of 0.87, specificity of 0.81, and positive likelihood ratio of 5.04. The area under the receiveroperator curve in this study was 0.91 (95% confidence interval, 0.870.94). Discussion The PHQ-9 performs well and has acceptable psychometric properties for screening of patients with depression in a Chinese primary care population.
Application analysis of the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire in adolescents

Abstract:ObjectiveTo investigate the measurement invariance and the score distribution characters of the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire （PHQ-9）， and to test its feasibility in comparing depression among adolescents of different sexes and ages.MethodsFrom September 2018 to May 2019， 12 241 adolescents aged 10 to 19 years old across 22 primary and secondary schools in Hangzhou were included based on cluster sampling method， and they were investigated by PHQ-9. The measurement invariance was tested by multi-group confirmatory factor analysis. Poisson regression analysis and Logistic regression analysis were adopted to explore the score distribution of PHQ-9 by sex and age.ResultsThe configural， metric， scalar and strict invariances （χ2=2 492.527， df=79， P<0.01， RMSEA=0.071， SRMR=0.031， CFI=0.942， TLI=0.947， ΔCFI=0.004， ΔTLI=0.002 compared with the scalar model） of PHQ-9 across sex were all acceptable， and the configural， metric and scalar invariances （χ2=3 311.991， df=414， P<0.01， RMSEA=0.076， SRMR=0.055， CFI=0.928， TLI=0.937， ΔCFI=0.010， ΔTLI=0.002 compared with the metric model） across age were acceptable. The detection rate of mild depressive symptoms in girls was higher than that in boys （52.99% vs. 46.65%， χ2=48.344， P<0.01）. The PHQ-9 total scores of girls aged 13 to 17 were higher than those of boys （D=0.092~0.144， P<0.01）. There was an interaction between sex and age （χ2=32.800， df=1， P<0.01， OR=0.895）. Except low self-evaluation and suicide or self-injury， the detection rate of assessed symptom on each item of girls was higher than that of boys （P<0.05）.ConclusionIt is discovered that PHQ-9 has measurement equivalence across sex and age in adolescents， and girls and older adolescents scored higher in PHQ-9.

Abstract:Background: Screening for major depression with the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) can be done using a cutoff or the PHQ-9 diagnostic algorithm. Many primary studies publish results for only one approach, and previous meta-analyses of the algorithm approach included only a subset of primary studies that collected data and could have published results. Objective: To use an individual participant data meta-analysis to evaluate the accuracy of two PHQ-9 diagnostic algorithms for detecting major depression and compare accuracy between the algorithms and the standard PHQ-9 cutoff score of ≥10. Methods: Medline, Medline In-Process and Other Non-Indexed Citations, PsycINFO, Web of Science (January 1, 2000, to February 7, 2015). Eligible studies that classified current major depression status using a validated diagnostic interview. Results: Data were included for 54 of 72 identified eligible studies (n participants = 16,688, n cases = 2,091). Among studies that used a semi-structured interview, pooled sensitivity and specificity (95% confidence interval) were 0.57 (0.49, 0.64) and 0.95 (0.94, 0.97) for the original algorithm and 0.61 (0.54, 0.68) and 0.95 (0.93, 0.96) for a modified algorithm. Algorithm sensitivity was 0.22–0.24 lower compared to fully structured interviews and 0.06–0.07 lower compared to the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview. Specificity was similar across reference standards. For PHQ-9 cutoff of ≥10 compared to semi-structured interviews, sensitivity and specificity (95% confidence interval) were 0.88 (0.82–0.92) and 0.86 (0.82–0.88). Conclusions: The cutoff score approach appears to be a better option than a PHQ-9 algorithm for detecting major depression.Psychother Psychosom

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) is a widely used self-reported measure of depression, which was found to display only acceptable psychometric properties. Insufficient attention has been devoted to its clinimetric validity and its clinical utility is still debated, particularly when used for assessing depression severity. This is the first study testing PHQ-9 construct validity and clinical utility based on clinimetric principles.METHODS: An online survey involving a sample of 3,398 participants was conducted. Item Response Theory models (Rasch and Mokken analyses) were used to assess PHQ-9 validity and determine its clinical utility.RESULTS: Fit to the Rasch model was achieved after adjusting the sample size. Items 2, 4, 6, 9 displayed over-discrimination, items 1, 5, 7 showed under-discrimination. Indication of local dependency between items 2 and 6 was found. PHQ-9 was not unidimensional. A Loevinger's coefficient of 0.49 was found, indicating an acceptable level of scalability.CONCLUSIONS: PHQ-9 is a measure of potential clinical utility to be used as an overall index of depression, mainly for screening purposes. Substantial revisions, particularly in the wording of over- and under-discriminating items, are needed.

The same but different too: Depression profiles in young adults without a history of psychiatric treatment identified using Bayesian and partial correlation networks

Abstract:Depression is a heterogenous diagnostic construct; however, dynamic interactions between specific depressive symptoms across their qualitatively different profiles remain largely unknown. The study aimed to recognize the most prevalent profiles of depressive symptoms and assess their dynamics in young adults without a history of psychiatric treatment. Depressive symptoms were recorded using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). The data were assessed for all theoretical and empirical combinations of depressive symptoms in participants with a positive screening for depression. The profiles identified in the majority of participants were analyzed using partial correlation and Bayesian networks. Data from 3583 individuals with a positive screening for depression were analyzed. Out of 382 theoretical profiles, 150 profiles (39.3%) were present in this dataset. The majority of participants (56.8%) showed 4 profiles of depressive symptoms including the profile with all depressive symptoms present, the profile without suicidal ideation, the profile without psychomotor impairment, and the profile without both psychomotor impairment and suicidal ideation. The profiles differed largely in terms of their dynamics and symptoms that are necessary to activate the whole network. The network characteristics within specific profiles did not differ significantly across the level of difficulties attributable to depressive symptoms. Our findings indicate that depression emerging in young adults shows a limited number of symptom profiles. However, dynamics of depressive symptoms differs largely between specific profiles regardless of functional impairment indicating the need to personalize therapeutic approaches. Future studies should further disentangle the heterogeneity of depressive symptoms, e.g., by dissecting the symptoms that are combined together by single PHQ-9 items (i.e., hypersomnia and insomnia; psychomotor agitation and retardation).

Abstract:International Journal of Social Psychiatry, Ahead of Print. Background:While social disparities in depression are well-documented, the symptom experience across social positions remains less studied.Aims:This study examines the connections between depressive symptoms and self-recognizing a depressive episode, on the one hand, and clinical diagnosis, on the other hand, by three social position indicators.Methods:We analyzed baseline data from a population-based cohort of adults living in France, grouping participants by three indicators: education, financial difficulties, and occupation, and stratifying by sex. Utilizing a psychometric network approach, we estimated 24 networks. Nodes corresponded to the 20 CES-D items and 1 external variable, either 'Limitations due to depression' or 'Clinical depression'. Comparisons between socially disadvantaged and advantaged groups across the three social indicators were made in terms of network structures, global strength, and edge weights involving symptoms and both external nodes.Results:The study included data from 201,952 participants. Individuals in lower social positions exhibited higher rates of depressive-related variables. Four depressive symptoms emerged as crucial, being linked both to 'Clinical depression' and 'Limitations' across all social positions. Socially disadvantaged groups had denser networks. Some of the tests comparing network structures according to social position were significant, suggesting differences in the symptom activation chains. Connections between each external node and 'Felt depressed' and 'Could not get going' were non-invariant in educational and financial-based networks.Conclusions:Findings highlight four depressive symptoms, likely to play a key role in the experience of depression across all social positions. Other insights from specific symptoms could be used for improving depression care among disadvantaged populations.

Abstract:Background Depression symptoms and mood disorders constitute one of the major public health challenges among youths. Thus, early prevention and intervention for depression should be a priority. The main goal of the present study was to validate the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) scores in a school-based sample of non-clinical adolescents. Method Stratified random sampling was conducted. Participants were 2235 students ( M = 14.49, SD =1.76, range= 12-18 years), 52.9% were female, from 34 secondary schools in Spain. Several previously validated self-reported questionnaires of mental health and psychopathology were administrated. Results The unidimensional factorial model of the PHQ-9 items showed adequate goodness of fit indices. Strong measurement invariance across gender was found. Omega for the PHQ-9 total score was .87. PHQ-9 total score was positively associated with anxiety symptoms and emotional and behavioral problems, and negatively associated with prosocial behavior and quality of life. Conclusions The PHQ-9 is a brief, easy, and reliable tool for assessing self-reported depressive symptoms in both clinical and school settings. PHQ-9 may be used as a screening tool for universal early detection and monitorization of depression symptoms during adolescence.

Abstract:The PHQ-9 has become a measure of reference in depression research and clinical practice. However, the issue of the PHQ-9's unidimensionality has not been fully elucidated, and the usability of the PHQ-9's total score requires clarification. In this study, we examined the dimensionality, scalability, and monotonicity properties of the PHQ-9 as well as the scale's total-score reliability. We did so based on exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM) bifactor analysis and Mokken scale analysis (MSA). We relied on a total of 58,272 participants (63% female; Mage = 43, SDage = 13) from 29 samples involving seven different countries (e.g., Germany, the U.S.) and five different languages (e.g., German, English). We found no concerning deviations from measurement invariance for our ESEM bifactor model, neither across samples nor across sexes, age groups, and languages. The PHQ-9 met the requirements for essential unidimensionality in the pooled sample and across sex-, age-, and language-based subsamples. In each case, the general factor was strong (e.g., factor loadings ranged from 0.725 to 0.893 in the pooled sample) and Omega Hierarchical values exceeded 0.900. The correlations between the general factor and the observed total scores were large (≥ 0.952). Our MSA, including multilevel MSA, revealed that the PHQ-9's scalability is satisfactory. No monotonicity violation was detected, suggesting that the scale's total score accurately orders respondents on the latent Depression variable. Total-score reliability was good. This study provides robust evidence that the PHQ-9 can be used as a unidimensional measure of depressive symptoms by researchers and practitioners. Abstract:Objective: To identify depression subphenotypes from Electronic Health Records (EHRs) using machine learning methods, and analyze their characteristics with respect to patient demographics, comorbidities, and medications. Materials and Methods: Using EHRs from the INSIGHT Clinical Research Network (CRN) database, multiple machine learning (ML) algorithms were applied to analyze 11 275 patients with depression to discern depression subphenotypes with distinct characteristics. Results: Using the computational approaches, we derived three depression subphenotypes: Phenotype_A (n = 2791; 31.35%) included patients who were the oldest (mean (SD) age, 72.55 (14.93) years), had the most comorbidities, and took the most medications. The most common comorbidities in this cluster of patients were hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and diabetes. Phenotype_B (mean (SD) age, 68.44 (19.09) years) was the largest cluster (n = 4687; 52.65%), and included patients suffering from moderate loss of body function. Asthma, fibromyalgia, and Chronic Pain and Fatigue (CPF) were common comorbidities in this subphenotype. Phenotype_C (n = 1452; 16.31%) included patients who were younger (mean (SD) age, 63.47 (18.81) years), had the fewest comorbidities, and took fewer medications. Anxiety and tobacco use were common comorbidities in this subphenotype. Conclusion: Computationally deriving depression subtypes can provide meaningful insights and improve understanding of depression as a heterogeneous disorder. Further investigation is needed to assess the utility of these derived phenotypes to inform clinical trial design and interpretation in routine patient care.
Using a Longitudinal Network Structure to Subgroup Depressive Symptoms among Adolescents

Abstract:Background Network modeling has been proposed as an effective approach to examine complex associations among antecedents, mediators and symptoms. This study aimed to investigate whether the severity of depressive symptoms affects the multivariate relationships among symptoms and mediating factors over a 2-year longitudinal follow-up. Methods We recruited a school-based cohort of 1480 primary and secondary school students over four semesters from January 2020 to December 2021. The participants ( n = 1145) were assessed at four time points (ages 10–13 years old at baseline). Based on a cut-off score of 5 on the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire at each time point, the participants were categorized into the non-depressive symptom (NDS) and depressive symptom (DS) groups. We conducted network analysis to investigate the symptom-to-symptom influences in these two groups over time. Results The global network metrics did not differ statistically between the NDS and DS groups at four time points. However, network connection strength varied with symptom severity. The edge weights between learning anxiety and social anxiety were prominently in the NDS group over time. The central factors for NDS and DS were oversensitivity and impulsivity (3 out of 4 time points), respectively. Moreover, both node strength and closeness were stable over time in both groups. Conclusions Our study suggests that interrelationships among symptoms and contributing factors are generally stable in adolescents, but a higher severity of depressive symptoms may lead to increased stability in these relationships.

Abstract:Abstract Objective To determine the accuracy of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) for screening to detect major depression. Design Individual participant data meta-analysis. Data sources Medline, Medline In-Process and Other Non-Indexed Citations, PsycINFO, and Web of Science (January 2000-February 2015). Inclusion criteria Eligible studies compared PHQ-9 scores with major depression diagnoses from validated diagnostic interviews. Primary study data and study level data extracted from primary reports were synthesized. For PHQ-9 cut-off scores 5-15, bivariate random effects meta-analysis was used to estimate pooled sensitivity and specificity, separately, among studies that used semistructured diagnostic interviews, which are designed for administration by clinicians; fully structured interviews, which are designed for lay administration; and the Mini International Neuropsychiatric (MINI) diagnostic interviews, a brief fully structured interview. Sensitivity and specificity were examined among participant subgroups and, separately, using meta-regression, considering all subgroup variables in a single model. Results Data were obtained for 58 of 72 eligible studies (total n=17 357; major depression cases n=2312). Combined sensitivity and specificity was maximized at a cut-off score of 10 or above among studies using a semistructured interview (29 studies, 6725 participants; sensitivity 0.88, 95% confidence interval 0.83 to 0.92; specificity 0.85, 0.82 to 0.88). Across cut-off scores 5-15, sensitivity with semistructured interviews was 5-22% higher than for fully structured interviews (MINI excluded; 14 studies, 7680 participants) and 2-15% higher than for the MINI (15 studies, 2952 participants). Specificity was similar across diagnostic interviews. The PHQ-9 seems to be similarly sensitive but may be less specific for younger patients than for older patients; a cut-off score of 10 or above can be used regardless of age.. Conclusions PHQ-9 sensitivity compared with semistructured diagnostic interviews was greater than in previous conventional meta-analyses that combined reference standards. A cut-off score of 10 or above maximized combined sensitivity and specificity overall and for subgroups. Registration PROSPERO CRD42014010673.

Abstract:Background The network analysis method emphasizes the interaction between individual symptoms to identify shared or bridging symptoms between depression and anxiety to understand comorbidity. However, the network analysis and community detection approach have limitations in identifying causal relationships among symptoms. This study aims to address this gap by applying Bayesian network (BN) analysis to investigate potential causal relationships. Method Data were collected from a sample of newly enrolled college students. The network structure of depression and anxiety was estimated using the Patient Health Questionnaire‐9 (PHQ‐9) and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD‐7) Scale measures, respectively. Shared symptoms between depression and anxiety were identified through network analysis and clique percolation (CP) method. The causal relationships among symptoms were estimated using BN. Results The strongest bridge symptoms, as indicated by bridge strength, include sad mood (PHQ2), motor (PHQ8), suicide (PHQ9), restlessness (GAD5), and irritability (GAD6). These bridge symptoms formed a distinct community using the CP algorithm. Sad mood (PHQ2) played an activating role, influencing other symptoms. Meanwhile, restlessness (GAD5) played a mediating role with reciprocal influences on both anxiety and depression symptoms. Motor (PHQ8), suicide (PHQ9), and irritability (GAD6) assumed recipient positions. Conclusion BN analysis presents a valuable approach for investigating the complex interplay between symptoms in the context of comorbid depression and anxiety. It identifies two activating symptoms (i.e., sadness and worry), which serve to underscore the fundamental differences between these two disorders. Additionally, psychomotor symptoms and suicidal ideations are recognized as recipient roles, being influenced by other symptoms within the network.

Abstract:Quality of life (QoL) in people with Parkinson ́s disease (PD) is commonly measured with the PD questionnaire-39 (PDQ-39), but its factor structure and construct validity have been questioned. To develop effective interventions to improve QoL, it is crucial to understand the connection between different PDQ-39 items and to assess the validity of PDQ-39 subscales. With a new approach based on network analysis using the extended Bayesian Information Criterion Graphical Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (EBICglasso) followed by factor analysis, we mostly replicated the original PDQ-39 subscales in two samples of PD patients (total N = 977). However, model fit was better when the "ignored" item was categorized into the social support instead of the communication subscale. In both study cohorts, "depressive mood", "feeling isolated", "feeling embarrassed", and "having trouble getting around in public/needing company when going out" were identified as highly connected variables. This network approach can help to illustrate the relationship between different symptoms and direct interventional approaches in a more effective manner.

Abstract:Depression and suicide are significant public health issues. The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) is commonly used to assess for symptoms of depression, but its psychometric properties within Multiracial/ethnic populations remains uncertain. In a study involving 1,012 English-speaking Multiracial/ethnic participants from the United States (US), the PHQ-9 showed strong internal consistency ( α = 0.93) and supported a one-factor structure. No measurement variance was observed between Non-White and White/Non-White Multiracial/ethic subgroups. PHQ-2, with a cutoff of ≥3, identified fewer depression cases than PHQ-9 (32% vs. 40%), with sensitivities of 75–99% and specificities of 74–96%; a cutoff of ≥2 missed fewer cases. Item performance of the ninth PHQ-9 question, addressing thoughts of death or self-harm, varied across generations with younger generations more likely to endorse thoughts of death or self-harm at any level of symptom severity. The findings suggest the PHQ-9 demonstrated adequate reliability within a population of Multiracial/ethnic adults in the US; however, the use of the 9th item of the PHQ-9 may not be adequate for identifying individuals at risk for suicidal thoughts and/or behaviors, particularly for older Multiracial/ethnic adults. The lower sensitivity of the PHQ-2 with a ≥ 3 cutoff suggests a cutoff of ≥2 may be preferable to miss fewer cases of depression.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Despite the high co-morbidity of depressive symptoms in patients with multiple somatic symptoms, the validity of the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) has not yet been investigated in Chinese patients with multiple somatic symptoms.METHODS:The multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted in ten outpatient departments located in four cities in China. The psychometric properties of the PHQ-9 were examined by confirmative factor analysis (CFA). Criterion validation was undertaken by comparing results with depression diagnoses obtained from the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) as the gold standard.RESULTS:Overall, 491 patients were recruited of whom 237 had multiple somatic symptoms (SOM+ group, PHQ-15≥10). Cronbach׳s α of the PHQ-9 was 0.87, 0.87, and 0.90 for SOM+ patients, SOM- patients, and total sample respectively. All items and the total score were moderately correlated. The factor models of PHQ-9 tested by CFA yielded similar diagnostic performance when compared to sum score estimation. Multi-group confirmatory factor analysis based on unidimensional model showed similar psychometric properties over the groups with low and high somatic symptom burden. The optimal cut-off point to detect depression in Chinese outpatients was 10 for PHQ-9 (sensitivity=0.77, specificity=0.76) and 3 for PHQ-2 (sensitivity=0.77, specificity=0.74).LIMITATIONS:Potential selection bias and nonresponse bias with applied sampling method.CONCLUSIONS:PHQ-9 (cut-off point=10) and PHQ-2 (cut-off point=3) were reliable and valid to detect major depression in Chinese patients with multiple somatic symptoms.

Abstract:Individuals with schizophrenia and other associated disorders experience significant disturbance to their quality of life (QoL) due to a multitude of co-occurring symptoms. Popular evidence-based practices (EBPs) devote significant effort to reduce positive symptomatology in order to prevent relapse, while emerging research posits that other symptoms (cognitive deficits, negative and affective symptoms) are more indicative of QoL disturbance. This study sought to examine the impact of symptom constructs on QoL and attempt to infer directionality of influence via network analysis. A total of 102 recovery phase adult outpatients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders were assessed on positive, negative, and affective symptomatology, in addition to QoL and cognitive abilities. Exploratory factor analysis and network analysis were performed to identify associations and infer directed influence between symptom constructs, and a directed acyclic graph was constructed to observe associations between symptom domains and QoL. Factor analysis results indicated that individual measures align with their respective symptom constructs. Strong factor correlations were found between QoL and the negative and affective symptom constructs, with weaker associations found between positive symptoms and cognition. Visualization of the network structure illustrated QoL as the central cluster of the network, and examination of the weighted edges found the strongest connectivity between QoL, negative symptomatology, and affective symptoms. More severe negative and affective symptoms were most directly linked with poorer QoL and may prove to be integral in attaining positive outcomes in schizophrenia treatment . Incorporation of psychosocial treatments in addition to pharmacotherapy may prove effective in targeting negative and affective symptoms.

This study assessed the convergent validity, reliability, and total scale score interconversion across the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) self-report, the 16-item Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology-clinician report (QIDS-C) (two widely used clinical ratings) and the 5-item Very Brief Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptoms-clinician report (VQIDS-C), which evaluate the core features of MDD. Patients and Methods: This study leveraged electronic health record (EHR)-derived, de-identified data from the NeuroBlu Database (Version 23R1), a longitudinal behavioural health real-world platform. Classical Test Theory (CTT) and Item Response Theory (IRT) analyses were used to evaluate the reliability, validity of, and conversions between the scales. The Test Information Function (TIF) was calculated for each scale, with greater test information reflecting higher precision and reliability in measuring depressive symptomology. IRT was also used to generate conversion tables so that total scores on each scale could be compared to the other. Results: The study sample (n = 2,156) had an average age of 36.4 years (standard deviation [SD] = 13.0) and 59.7% were female. The mean depression scores for the PHQ-9, QIDS-C, and VQIDS-C were 12.9 (SD = 6.6), 12.0 (SD = 4.9), and 6.18 (SD = 3.2), respectively. The Cronbach's alpha coefficients for PHQ-9, QIDS-C, and VQIDS-C were 0.9, 0.8, and 0.7, respectively, suggesting acceptable internal consistency. PHQ-9 (TIF = 30.3) demonstrated the best assessment of depressive symptomology, followed by QIDS-C (TIF = 25.8) and VQIDS-C (TIF = 17.7). Conclusion: Overall, PHQ-9, QIDS-C, and VQIDS-C appear to be reliable and convertible measures of MDD symptomology within a US-based adult population in a real-world clinical setting. Abstract:The importance of preventing and treating adolescent depression has been gradually recognized in Chinese society, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Early screening is the first step. The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) is a leading scale in the field of depression screening. To improve screening efficiency in large-scale screening, an even shorten scale is desirable. The PHQ-2, which only included two items measuring anhedonia and depressed mood, is an ultra-form of the PHQ-9. However, emerging evidence suggests that there may be a better short form for the PHQ-9, especially for adolescents. Therefore, using two large samples of Chinese adolescents, this study aimed to identify the core items of the PHQ-9 and examine the short form consisting of core items.
