Abstract:Pt SA and Pt nanoparticles (NP) were separately deposited onto a TiO 2 photoanode using established methods. While the Pt nanoparticles consisted of Pt in its metallic Pt(0) state, XPS data indicated that Pt SA contained Pt in a slightly oxidized form (Pt δ + ) due to donation of electron density to the TiO 2 support. Consistent with this, the charge transfer kinetics in TiO 2 were altered in the presence of Pt SA while they remained largely unaffected by Pt NP. Theoretical calculations also indicated a lower activation energy for the rate determining O* to *OOH step on Pt SA. The combination of these effects results in 2–3 times increased PEC OER performance on TiO 2 /Pt SA compared to both TiO 2 /Pt NP and bare TiO 2 . In alkaline media, a photocurrent density of 5.9 mA cm –2 is achieved at 1.23 V versus RHE (reversible hydrogen electrode) on TiO 2 /Pt SA. Beyond the specific model system studied, this report acts as a nice reminder that the application of a co-catalyst on a semiconductor can have an impact on both the charge transfer properties and the chemical kinetics that affect a PEC reaction. The findings suggest there could be value in revisiting different forms, such as atomic dispersion, of materials that have previously been considered poor electrocatalysts for a given reaction.
