Abstract:Ag quantum dots (Ag QDs) sensitized TiO2 nanorod arrays (NRAs)/ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) heterojunctions were fabricated by a three-step method and investigated as photocatalysts. Experimental results showed that the novel material exhibited enhanced optical properties and a high degradation rate (for methyl orange) under UV light (109% compared to bare TiO2 NRAs). The high rate was attributed to an increase in the separation of electrons-holes induced by the introduction of the ZnO NPs and the localized surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of Ag QDs. The degradation mechanism was elucidated based on the band structure. It is suggested that the TiO2/ZnO/Ag nanostructure developed in our work can provide a new platform for the design of highly efficient photocatalysts.
A shell‐core structure ZIF‐8@AgNWs for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue

Abstract:Due to the wider band gap and low electron discharge capacity, the Zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF‐8) showed low photocatalytic performance compared with conventional semiconductor materials. To enhance the photocatalytic activity of ZIF‐8, the ZIF‐8@AgNWs composite was synthesized via the in‐situ growth method using AgNWs as the photo‐enhanced material. The obtained ZIF‐8@AgNWs exhibit the fully encapsulated shell‐core structure of ZIF‐8‐AgNWs. The UV‐Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) analysis showed that the addition of AgNWs led to a significant increase in light absorption of the ZIF‐8@AgNWs composite, and the band gap of the ZIF‐8@AgNWs was 2.9 eV, with a significant decrease compared to pure ZIF‐8 (4.96 eV). The ZIF‐8@AgNWs‐2 achieves the best photocatalytic activity for methylene blue (MB) degradation. Its degradation efficiency reached 94%, and its apparent rate constant was 0.04371 min−1. This work might provide a novel strategy for the MOF‐based photocatalytic materials with higher photocatalytic activity. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Using zinc nitrate hexahydrate and 2-methylimidazole as raw materials, ZIF-8 was successfully prepared in the methanol solvent. Through the stepwise strategies of pyrolysis and calcination at different temperatures and atmospheres, the desired product of ZnO/C composite was obtained. The techniques of XRD, FT-IR and SEM were used to determine the structure and morphology of samples, respectively. The results showed that ZnO/C composite retained the hexagonal polyhedron morphology of ZIF-8 and constructed a porous structure. And, the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue solution was carried out using ZnO/C and referenced ZnO as catalysts, respectively. The results declared that the improved catalytic property of ZnO/C composite benefited from the synergistic effect of ZnO and porous carbon skeleton. The excellent degradation ability of ZnO/C was achieved. This work provided a facile way to develop ZnO-based photocatalysts with the desired photocatalytic performance.

Abstract:ZnO@ In2O3 core–shell heterojunctions are constructed by utilizing MIL‐68 (In) and ZIF‐8 as substrates. This MOF‐derived core–shell heterojunction maintains the large specific surface area and high porosity structure of MOFs, providing more active sites and multiple microporous mesopores that facilitate carrier migration to the surface. The realization of fast carrier transport can effectively enhance photocatalytic performance. A core–shell structure of ZnO and In2O3 is successfully constructed by using MIL‐68 (In) and ZIF‐8 as a substrate, forming a heterojunction. This MOF‐derived core–shell heterojunction inherits the advantages of ZIF‐8, with pores facilitating carriers transfer to the surface for reactions and a large specific surface area providing more active sites. This Z‐scheme heterojunction of ZnO and In2O3 can effectively separate and improve the utilization of photogenerated carriers. The well‐designed interface of the core–shell structure achieves the rapid transfer of photogenerated carriers. The photocatalytic degradation capability of ZnO@ In2O3 is enhanced by the synergistic effect of Z‐scheme heterojunction and core–shell structure. This work provides insight into the investigation of constructing core–shell heterojunctions.

Stable core–shell ZIF-8@ZIF-67 MOFs photocatalyst for highly efficient degradation of organic pollutant and hydrogen evolution

Abstract:Compared to single metal–organic framework (MOF), core–shell MOF crystals are more promising due to their special structure and unique properties. Herein, since ZIF-8 and ZIF-67 have the same topology, crystal growth method is used to synthesize core–shell crystals ZIF-8@ZIF-67, which exhibit far superior light adsorption, charge separation capabilities, and excellent stability than ZIF-8 and ZIF-67. The photocatalytic H2 generation rate for ZIF-8@ZIF-67 (1:1) is about 17 times higher than that of pure ZIF-67 without cocatalyst loading under same reaction conditions. Through a series of characterizations, two connection modes between ZIF-8 and ZIF-67 frames in core–shell contact interface are proposed, and the corresponding photocatalytic mechanism is elucidated. Transient photovoltaic curve reveals the unique transfer paths of electrons through contact interface, which leads to efficient charge separation compared with other ZIF materials. This study provides a novel and simple strategy to synthesis high effective and stable core–shell ZIF photocatalyst for photodegradation and hydrogen evolution.Graphic abstract

Abstract:The development of photocatalysts for organic degradation is a hot research topic. In this study, CdZnS was selected as the carrier, and ZIF-8 was combined with it to explore the photocatalytic performance of the composite. In addition, the compound material, CdZnS@ZIF-8, was used as a photocatalyst for the decomposition of methylene blue dye, and the performance of pure CdZnS and pure ZIF-8 was compared. The photocatalytic efficiency of CdZnS@ZIF-8 was significantly higher than that of the other two. In the experimental reaction, the amount of catalyst was 0.04 g, the pH value was 7, the initial concentration of methylene blue aqueous solution was 20 mg/L, and the degradation of methylene blue in 50 mL aqueous solution could reach 99.5% under visible light irradiation for 90 min, showing excellent photocatalytic efficiency in the visible light range. It demonstrated excellent photocatalytic function in the visible light region, and the electron transfer phenomenon at the interface occurred in the het-junction and the separation of the photo-generating electron–hole as an electron acceptor of ZIF-8 further promoted the photocatalytic effect.

Abstract:The development of high-efficiency heterostructure photocatalysts is an attractive strategy for aquatic pollutants degradation. Herein, a novel 2D/2D Z-scheme heterojunction between SnNb2O6 nanosheets and flower-shaped ZnO nanosheets was designed and fabricated through a simple two-step hydrothermal method. As expected, the obtained composite photocatalyst exhibits outstanding photodegradation efficiencies for RhB and phenol. The optimal reaction rate constant over 20%-SnNb2O6/ZnO heterostructure in RhB degradation is almost 15.03 and 3.95 times higher than pristine SnNb2O6 and ZnO, respectively. Such an improved photocatalytic activity is mainly ascribed to the broader optical absorption and facilitated charge separation, which can be proved by various analytical methods. This designed composite also displayed excellent stability in four-cycle experiments. Additionally, a possible direct Z-scheme electron migration mechanism under an internal electric field was proposed with the aid of reactive species trapping experiments. This work provides a feasible strategy to obtain high-performance photocatalysts and might inspire a new perspective in the design of other 2D/2D Z-scheme heterojunctions for environmental purification.
Rapid Construction of ZnO@ZIF-8 Heterostructures with Size-Selective Photocatalysis Properties

Abstract:To selectively remove heavy metal from dye solution, inspired by the unique pore structure of ZIF-8, we developed a synthetic strategy for rapid construction of ZnO@ZIF-8 heterostructure photocatalyst for selective reduction of Cr(VI) between Cr(VI) and methylene blue (MB). In particular, ZnO@ZIF-8 core shell heterostructures were prepared by in situ ZIF-8 crystal growth using ZnO colloidal spheres as template and zinc source within 8-60 min. The shell of the resulting ZnO@ZIF-8 core shell heterostructure with a uniform thickness of around 30 nm is composed of ZIF-8 crystal polyhedrons. The concentration of organic ligand 2-methylimidazole (Hmim) was found to be crucial for the formation of ZnO@ZIF-8 core shell heterostructures. Different structures, ZnO@ZIF-8 core shell spheres and separate ZIF-8 polyhedrons could be formed by altering Hmim concentration, which significantly influences the balance between rate of Zn2+ release from ZnO and coordinate rate. Importantly, such ZnO@ZIF-8 core shell heterostructures exhibit size-selective photocatalysis properties due to selective adsorption and permeation effect of ZIF-8 shell. The as-synthesized ZnO@ZIF-8 heterostructures exhibited enhanced selective reduction of Cr(VI) between Cr(VI) and MB, which may find application in the dye industry. This work not only provides a general route for rapid fabrication of such core shell heterostructures but also illustrates a strategy for selectively enhanced photocatalysis performance by utilizing adsorption and size selectivity of ZIF-8 shell.

Abstract:A series of novel Bi2MoO6/zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) photocatalysts have been successfully fabricated through a facile self-assembly process. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-vis spectrophotometry, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterized pure Bi2MoO6, pure ZIF-8, and a series of Bi2MoO6/ZIF-8 composites. The result indicated that, when compared with pure Bi2MoO6, the composite of Bi2MoO6/ZIF-8 exhibited excellent photocatalytic performance for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under visible light. Moreover, the Bi2MoO6/ZIF-8-3 composite (the molar ratio of Bi2MoO6 to 2-MI is 3:3) has optimum photocatalytic performance because of the suitable amount of ZIF-8 decorated on the flower-like Bi2MoO6. The enhanced photocatalytic activity is probably due to the introduction of ZIF-8, which will promote the separation of electron–hole pair and the surface morphology. Construction of the rapid spatial charge migration core/shell heterostructure by ZnIn2S4 nanosheet-surface-loaded β-Bi2O3 for improved photooxidative performance

Abstract:The development of novel heterojunctions with optimized interface contact is essential for realizing the highly efficient solar conversion in photocatalysis. In this work, a series of β-Bi2O3/ZnIn2S4 (BO/ZIS) nanocomposite photocatalysts were firstly fabricated via a facile self-assembly process, in which a large number of ZnIn2S4 nanosheets were tightly loaded on β-Bi2O3 nanoparticles to form the unique core/shell heterostructure. The produced core/shell BO/ZIS hybrid heterojunction with larger contact areas could provide more high-speed charge transmission nanochannels for better spatial charge separation. The boosted charge carrier migration, extended spectral adsorption and increased surface areas were favorable for the enhancement of efficiency, thus contributing to the significantly improved tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) photodegradation performance. In particular, the experimental results showed that the as-synthesized BO/ZIS-2 hybrid possessed the optimal degradation efficiency and its rate constant was about 1.84 and 2.49 times higher than those of bare β-Bi2O3 and Znln2S4, respectively. Furthermore, in accordance with the trapping analysis and HPLC–MS results, the predominant active specie acted during the reaction process and the degradation intermediate products of TCH were proposed. Finally, the possible reaction mechanism was put forward. This study verified that the construction of β-Bi2O3-based core/shell heterostructure was an effective strategy to improve its photocatalytic performance for its practical application.

Hollow-ZIF-templated formation of a ZnO@C–N–Co core–shell nanostructure for highly efficient pollutant photodegradation

Abstract:Semiconducting metal oxides have been considered as effective photocatalysts for the degradation of organic pollutants to decolorize contaminated water. However, the poor performance and difficulty in recycling greatly hinder their practical application. Herein, we designed and fabricated, for the first time, a novel ZnO@C-N-Co core-shell nanocomposite towards efficient and recyclable photocatalysis by directly pyrolyzing a hollow Zn/Co-ZIF matrix consisting of a ZIF-8 shell with some Co-ZIF nanoplates inside the hollow cavity. It was demonstrated that the ZIF-8-shell-derived ZnO nanoparticles could spontaneously agglomerate and move to the hollow cavity while the internal Co NPs transferred inversely to the ligand-derived N-C shell at suitable pyrolysis temperature, resulting in the unique ZnO@C-N-Co core-shell structure. This unique nanostructure possessed the following superior properties: (1) a core-shell structure may make the intermediate ZnO much more stable during the reaction; (2) a porous carbon shell can not only provide a high BET specific area and thus high adsorption capability for reactants, but can also inhibit the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes; (3) the embedded Co NPs were able to provide richer electron traps that further suppress the recombination of electrons and holes. As exemplified for the degradation of methyl orange, the ZnO@C-N-Co showed a significantly improved performance and excellent recyclability due to the highly synergistic effects between the C-N-Co shell and the robust ZnO. This strategy for the synthesis of MOF-derived core-shell nanomaterials could offer prospects for developing highly efficient photocatalysts.

Abstract:In this work, a novel Z-scheme heterojunction of ZIF67/WO 3 nanocomposite is successfully prepared via immobilizing WO 3 on the MOFs ZIF67 and confirmed by measuring XRD, FT-IR spectroscopy, XPS, SEM, TEM, and EDS. UV–vis and Mott-Schottky measurements. The photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared ZIF67/WO 3 is evaluated by degrading methylene blue (MB) solution under simulated visible light irradiation. Obviously, the optimal ZIF67/WO 3 -0.3 (designated as 0.3 g addition of WO 3 ) delivers significant photocatalytic degradation exceeding 90% toward MB within 120 min, which is about 3.0 and 4.2 times higher than those of pure ZIF67 (30.0%) and WO 3 (21.2%). With the addition of 0.02 g ZIF67/WO 3 -0.3 composite, a total volume of 50 mL of MB at 10 mg/L was thoroughly degraded in 120 min with an apparent rate constant of 0.0184 min −1 . Reactive species scavenging experiments indicated that the holes (h + ) and hydroxyl radical (·OH) are mainly responsible for MB degradation. Moreover, the probable reaction mechanism is elucidated by detecting the intermediates by performing LC–MS measurements. The excellent photocatalytic performance of the ZIF67/WO 3 is predominantly determined by the structural properties of the composite and the Z-scheme charge transfer pathway, which promote the efficient separation of photogenerated carriers and facilitate the transfer of photogenerated electrons to active sites. Therefore, it is a promising strategy for immobilizing the WO 3 on MOFs for constructing Z-scheme heterojunction to degrade the refractory organic dyes.

Abstract:CdS-ZIF-8 photocatalyst was prepared by introducing a ZnO-rich zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) during synthesis of CdS by a facile solvothermal method, using ZnO-rich ZIF-8 and cadmium acetate [Cd(Ac)2] as support and CdS precursor, respectively. The introduction of ZnO-rich ZIF-8 and the photodegradation performance of the catalyst for methylene blue (MB) organic dye were systemically investigated. The CdS-ZIF-8 catalysts were also characterized using X-ray diffraction analysis, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, N2 adsorption–desorption measurements, Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The results indicated that CdS-ZIF-8 contained ZIF-8, CdS, and ZnO phases. The CdS in CdS-ZIF-8 catalysts exhibited smaller particle size compared with pure CdS. Furthermore, compared with pure CdS, CdS-ZIF-8-30 with introduction of ZnO-rich ZIF-8 exhibited higher surface area (77.3 m2/g) and pore volume (0.103 cm3/g). EDX and FT-IR results suggested that a CdS/ZnO heterostructure was formed, which effectively reduced recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. Radical trapping experimental data and band edge position analysis revealed that Z-scheme behavior also played a role in the system. Relying on the combined effect of their structure, the photodegradation efficiency of all the CdS-ZIF-8 catalysts was obviously superior to that of pure CdS for degradation of MB under visible-light irradiation. Photodegradation results illustrated that CdS-ZIF-8 with introduction of 30 mg ZnO-rich ZIF-8 (denoted as CdS-ZIF-8-30) exhibited optimal photodegradation activity.

Abstract:In this work, a novel metal-organic framework (MOF) and BiVO4 (BVO) composite photocatalyst was successfully synthesized by an in-situ growth method. The characterization of obtained samples was done by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, N2 adsorption, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The photocatalytic performance of ZIF-8@BiVO4 composite was evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under simulated visible light irradiation. Compared with the mixture of BVO and ZIF-8, the composite photocatalyst exhibited superior photodegradation efficiency, which could be attributed to the synergistic effect between BVO and ZIF-8. The reduced recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes was considered to be an important reason for the enhancement of photocatalytic performance. This design demonstrates a rational method to improve the photocatalytic performance by combining photocatalysts with MOFs.

Abstract:Fabrication of heterojunction is an effective way of improving the photocatalytic performance of semiconductor in the photocatalytic wastewater treatment. ZnO/2O heterojunctions were successfully synthesised using Au nanoparticles loaded onto the surface of ZnO nanorods as heterostructural seeds to induce in situ growth of Cu2O shells. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electrochemical workstation and UV-vis diffuse reflection spectrograph were employed to analyze the structures, compositions and photoelectric properties of the synthesised photocatalysts. After 45–90 min of the photocatalysis of ZnO/2O heterojunctions under simulated sunlight, the degradation efficiencies of methyl orange and rhodamine B could reach 93.0% and 99.6%, respectively, which were much higher than those with mono- and bi-component catalysts. The photocatalytic system with ZnO/2O can achieve deep mineralization to decompose organic dye molecules into non-toxic products. The formation of heterostructures not only could expand the spectral absorption range to the visible region but also efficiently facilitate charge separation to transfer more photo-generated holes and electrons to generate oxidative hydroxyl and superoxide radicals. A Z-scheme charge separation mechanism was proposed according to the determination of radical species and energy band structures of ZnO–Cu2O.

Abstract:The rational design of semiconductor photocatalysts with multi-dimensional nanostructures is an effective way to solve the problem of water environmental pollution. Herein, a series of ZnIn2S4/MgAl-LDH (ZIS/LDH) composites with core-shell nanostructures were synthesized by in-situ growth of 2D ZnIn2S4 nanosheets onto the hexagonal LDH sheets. The obtained ZIS/LDH composite exhibited enhanced photocatalytic performance with 100% degradation efficiency for methyl orange (MO) within 20 min illumination, which was mainly attributed to the heterostructure formed by the excellent interface contact of the nanostructure, thereby inhibiting the recombination of photogenerated charges. Additionally, the as-synthesized photocatalyst shown satisfactory photocatalytic activity in stability tests and removal experiments for various dye pollutants. The present work provides a novel insight for the design of heterojunction photocatalysts with multidimensional nanostructures and environmentally friendly applications.

Abstract:The MoS2/ZnO heterostructures can be successfully prepared by combined facile hydrothermal and wet chemistry methods. The surface morphologies, microstructures, crystal structures, chemical compositions, optical properties of the MoS2/ZnO heterostructures study through the different kinds of characterization techniques. Compared with MoS2 nanoflakes, MoS2/ZnO heterostructures can increase electron-hole pairs separation, light-harvesting ability, and high specific surface area to improve the photocatalytic decomposition of methylene blue solution under visible light irradiation. Also, MoS2/ZnO heterostructures exhibited better visible-light photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity. Furthermore, the MoS2/ZnO heterostructures also exhibited superior photocatalytic reusability and stability for long-term photocatalytic processes.

Abstract:High-performance photocatalysts should urgently be developed to efficiently solve serious environmental problems. Herein, we successfully synthesized a novel, visible-light activated, three-dimensional ZnCdS@MoS 2 photocatalyst using a simple, two-step hydrothermal process. Based on reaction time-dependence, the growth mechanism of "oriented attachment" of the ZnCdS@MoS 2 heterostructure is described in detail. The photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) indicated that the prepared sample has an outstanding photocatalytic activity owing to the accelerated photogenerated electron production rate, inhibited electron–hole pair recombination, improved visible light–utilization rate, and increased specific surface area. According to our experimental results, the degradation rate of MB using the ZnCdS@MoS 2 nanocomposite was as high as 99.3% after 100 min of visible-light irradiation. The photocatalyst remained stable without any obvious decrease in activity even after three cycles of use. This study provides a strong support for the design of high-performance photocatalysts and their application in optoelectronic devices.
