Abstract:Orthorhombic rare-earth gallates with the general formula REE3GaO6 (where REE represents a rare-earth element) are highly promising inorganic materials, with significant potential for practical applications in the fields of photonics and electrochemistry. Among these compounds, functional materials prepared on the basis of trigadolinium gallate, Gd3GaO6, exhibit notable luminescent and transport properties, rendering them particularly suitable for use as phosphors with different emission colours and as solid electrolytes for fuel cells. This research paper provides an in-depth investigation of the features of the synthesis of trigadolinium gallate, as well as its optical and thermophysical properties. A novel, energy-efficient approach based on the gel combustion method successfully facilitated the synthesis of submicron-sized Gd3GaO6 powder. Subsequent high-temperature sintering of pressed powders at 1573 K for 5 h yielded fine-grained ceramics with a density exceeding 98% of the theoretical density. Through the utilisation of diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, the band gap energy of Gd3GaO6 was determined to be 3.6 eV. Additionally, high-temperature X-ray diffraction was employed to investigate the temperature-dependent variations of unit cell parameters in trigadolinium gallate. This analysis was conducted within the temperature range of 298–1273 K and revealed the absence of structural phase transitions. The linear thermal expansion coefficient for the material was found to be 9.76 × 10−6 K−1. Using differential scanning calorimetry, the temperature dependence of heat capacity of Gd3GaO6 was measured for the first time. The resulting curve exhibited no characteristic features of phase transitions, and was used to calculate thermodynamic functions in the temperature range of 298–1346 K. The study also included a measurement of thermal diffusivity using the laser flash analysis method, which enabled the determination of thermal conductivity in the range of 323–1174 K. Notably, the thermal conductivity of the Gd3GaO6 ceramics was found to approximate 3.2 W/(m·K) at room temperature. The thermophysical data presented in this paper are significant not only in terms of fundamental knowledge, but also for their applicability in engineering calculations during the design phase of Gd3GaO6-based photonic and electrochemical devices.
