Abstract:We investigate the field-effect control of ions in nanofluidic transistors (NFTs) with characteristic channel size (~100 nm) significantly larger than the system's Debye Length (~10 nm). These 100 nm NFTs achieve an ionic current modulation ratio of ~2.5, demonstrating better performance than the state-of-the-art 20 nm NFTs. The result attests a new operating regime beyond the Debye-screening limit. The relaxed constraint on channel size offers advantages in device manufacturing, testing, and reliability. It also opens up new applications in biological sensing and sample preparation.

Abstract:This work reveals a counterintuitive but basic process of ionic screening in nanofluidic channels. Steady-state numerical simulations and mathematical analysis show that, under significant longitudinal ionic transport, the screening ionic charges can be locally inverted in the channels: their charge sign becomes the same as that of the channel surface charges. The process is identified to originate from the coupling of ionic electro-diffusion transport and junction two-dimensional electrostatics. This finding may expand our understanding of ionic screening and electrical double layers in nanochannels. Furthermore, the charge inversion process results in a body-force torque on channel fluids, which is a possible mechanism for vortex generation in the channels and their nonlinear current-voltage characteristics.
Pressure Modulation of Ion Conductance and Selectivity in Nano-channels with Weakly Overlapping Electrical Double Layers

Abstract:This work numerically investigates the I-V responses of nanofluidic channels under external pressure difference. Poisson-Nernst-Planck-Stokes simulations demonstrate that ion conductance in nano-channels is influenced by the interplay between convective flow and concentration polarization. The extending degree of the ion depletion zone inside the channel is found to be improved at a forward pressure, resulting in a lower ionic conductance and vice versa. Furthermore, the ionic selectivity is increased (or decreased) by a positive (or negative) pressure in comparison with the case driven by electro-osmosis only. All these findings suggest that nano-channel's electrical property can be modulated by external pressures, thus implying potentials in practical nanofluidic applications.

Abstract:Diverse nanoconfined ion transport behaviors have attracted increasing attention in constructing ion-channel-inspired nanoconfined systems for high nanofluidic energy conversion performance. Conventional nanofluidic systems cannot simultaneously obtain high ion-selectivity and high ion-flux in a large region due to the decreasing effect of the electrical double layer (EDL) formed on the charged surface. Here, space charge is introduced in the nanoconfined system to effectively solve this problem by employing the synergistic effect of surface and space charges. The charge effect contribution on controlled-ion-transport is further decoupled into surface charge, space charge and synergistic effects for the first time. The surface charge induces charge separation within the EDL in a smaller diameter channel while the space charge dominates the ion-selectivity by the ion-exchange mechanism in a larger diameter channel. The synergistic effect, contributed by EDL and ion-exchange effects, is extremely important in large (around 100 nm), short nanochannel (around 100 nm), and high concentration fold (around 1000-fold) conditions to achieve high ion-selectivity, ion-flux, and nanofluidic energy conversion performances, which is systematically analyzed by theoretical simulation results. These results reveal the mechanism for enhanced ion transport behaviors and provide a solid foundation for designing high-performance nanofluidic devices in fields of desalination, sensor, energy conversion and storage.

Ion Permeability and Selectivity in Composite Nanochannels: Engineering Through the End Effects

Abstract:Ion transport through nanochannels allows ultrafast permeation and highly efficient separation, becoming promising for applications in water purification, mineral separation, and biological sensing. Spatial confinement down to the nanometer scale allows one to separate ions by their size, which, however, fails for ions with similar diameters of hydration. This selectivity can be boosted by enhancing the confinement to be comparable with or even lower than the size of hydrated ions, forcing the hydration shells to be distorted, even destroyed, or tuning the ion–wall interaction. We perform molecular simulations to explore ion transport processes across graphene nanochannels by exploring the end effects where both nanoconfinement and chemical functionalization are involved. We calculated the free-energy profiles that include the hopping barriers for dehydration/rehydration and adsorption/desorption of ions at the ends as well as the diffusivity of ions inside the nanochannel. A composite-channel model is then constructed for realistic membranes. The model and related parameters reported here allow us to quantitatively analyze the performance of nanochannel-embedded materials or devices, which conclude that, beyond subnanometer confinement that may be technically challenging for large-scale applications, edge engineering of the nanochannels by functional groups can significantly enhance the hopping-specific selectivity even if the diffusion-specific selectivity is gentle.

Abstract:In this work, we propose a new strategy to enhance ion transport in nanofluidic systems using counter-charged nanochannels, where half of the channels are positively changed while the other half are negatively charged. Molecular dynamics simulations and experiments are conducted to demonstrate the idea. Simulations show that the ionic current for the proposed system can be 5.8 times higher than that in the traditional fluidic systems, i.e., uniformly charged systems. The enhancement is caused by the separate transport of cations and anions in negatively and positively charged channels, respectively, for which the effective energy barrier for the ion transport is low. Experiments are carried out to confirm the proposed method. The results in this work provide helpful information for the design of certain energy systems, such as batteries and electrodes.

Ion Transport in Intelligent Nanochannels: A Comparative Analysis of the Role of Electric Field

Abstract:This research delves into investigating ion transport behavior within nanochannels, enhanced through modification with a negatively charged polyelectrolyte layer (PEL), aimed at achieving superior control. The study examines two types of electric fields─direct current and alternating current with square, sinusoidal, triangular, and sawtooth waveforms─to understand their impact on ion transport. Furthermore, the study compares symmetric (cylindrical) and asymmetric (conical) nanochannel geometries to assess the influence of overlapping electrical double layers (EDLs) in generating specific electrokinetic behaviors such as ionic current rectification (ICR) and ion selectivity. The research employs the finite element method to solve the coupled Poisson-Nernst-Planck and Navier-Stokes equations under unsteady-state conditions. By considering factors such as electrolyte concentration, soft layer charge density, and electric field type, the study evaluates ion transport performance in charged nanochannels, investigating effects on concentration polarization, electroosmotic flow (EOF), ion current, rectification, and ion selectivity. Notably, the study accounts for ion partitioning between the PEL and electrolyte to simulate real conditions. Findings reveal that conical nanochannels, due to improved EDL overlap, significantly enhance ion transport and related characteristics compared to cylindrical ones. For instance, under ηε = ηD = 0.8, ημ = 2, C0 = 20 mM, and NPEL/NA = 80 mol m-3 conditions, the average EOF for conical and cylindrical geometries is 0.1 and 0.008 m/s, respectively. Additionally, the study explores ion selectivity and rectification based on the electric field type, unveiling the potential of nanochannels as ion gates or diodes. In cylindrical nanochannels, the ICR remains at unity, with lower ion selectivity across waveforms compared to conical channels. Furthermore, rectification and ion selectivity trends are identified as Rf,square > Rf,DC > Rf,triangular > Rf,sinusoidal > Rf,sawtooth and Ssawtooth > Ssinusoidal > Striangular > SDC > Ssquare for conical nanochannels. Our study of ion transport control in nanochannels, guided by tailored electric fields and unique geometries, offers versatile applications in the field of Analytical Chemistry. This includes enhanced sample separation, controlled drug delivery, optimized pharmaceutical analysis, and the development of advanced biosensing technologies for precise chemical analysis and detection. These applications highlight the diverse analytical contributions of our methodology, providing innovative solutions to challenges in chemical analysis and biosensing.

Abstract:Ionic field effect transistors provide flexible and fast control of electrokinetic transport in nanofluidics, but most research has focused on Newtonian fluids. In this study, we use the finite element method (FEM) in COMSOL Multiphysics to solve the electro-osmotic flow of power-law fluids in a nanochannel using the Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) and Navier-Stokes (NS) equations. The changes in wall surface charge density, ion concentration, fluid velocity, axial potential, and ionic current in the nanochannel under different gate electrode voltages and power-law indices were studied. The results show that under the same gate electrode voltage, the change of the shear-thinning fluid is more obvious, and the difference between the shear-thickening fluid and the Newtonian fluid is relatively small. The shear-thinning fluid with a power-law index of 0.8 has a velocity about 10 times higher than the Newtonian fluid, and its ionic current is also much greater than the Newtonian fluid.

Abstract:The ionic selectivity of nanopores is crucial for the energy conversion based on nanoporous membranes. It can be significantly affected by various parameters of nanopores and the applied fields driving ions through porous membranes. Here, with finite element simulations, the selective transport of ions through nanopores is systematically investigated under three common fields, i.e. the electric field (V), hydrostatic pressure (p), and concentration gradient (C). For negatively charged nanopores, through the quantitative comparison of the cation selectivity (t+) under the three fields, the cation selectivity of nanopores follows the order of t+V > t+c > t+p. This is due to the transport characteristics of cations and anions through the nanopores. Because of the strong transport of counterions in electric double layers under electric fields and concentration gradients, the nanopore exhibits a relatively higher selectivity to counterions. We also explored the modulation of t+ on the properties of nanopores and solutions. Under all three fields, t+ is directly proportional to the pore length and surface charge density, and inversely correlated to the pore diameter and salt concentration. Under both the electric field and hydrostatic pressure, t+ has almost no dependence on the applied field strength or ion species, which can affect t+ in the case of the concentration gradient. Our results provide detailed insights into the comparison and regulation of ionic selectivity of nanopores under three fields which can be useful for the design of high-performance devices for energy conversion based on nanoporous membranes.

Abstract:Fast ion permeation in nanofluidic channels has been intensively investigated in the past few decades because of their potential uses in separation technologies and osmotic energy harvesting. Mechanisms governing ion transport at this ultimately small spatial regime remain to be understood, which can only be achieved in nanochannels that are controllably fabricated. Here, we report the fabrication of two-dimensional nanochannels with their top and bottom walls consisting of atomically flat graphite and mica crystals, respectively. The distinct wall structures and properties enable us to investigate interactions between ions and interior surfaces. We find an enhanced ion transport within the channels that is orders of magnitude faster than that in the bulk solutions. The result is attributed to the highly dense packing of adsorbed cations at mica surfaces, where they diffuse in-plane. Our work provides insights into surface effects on ion transport at the nanoscale.

Abstract:<p>The asymmetric ion transport in the nanoconfined space, similar to that of natural ion channels, has attracted broad interest in sensor, energy conversion, and other related fields. Among these systems, the surface charge plays an important role in regulating ion transport behaviors. Herein, this surface charge-regulated asymmetric ion transport behavior is systematically explored in the nanoconfined space and the influence on the performance of nanofluidic energy conversion system. The ion transport behaviors in the nanoconfined space are classified into pure diffusion, electrical double layer, and the polarization controlled state. The asymmetric solution environment or surface charge distribution induces asymmetric ion transport behavior which is largely controlled by the low concentration side. The ion-selectivity and the energy conversion performance can be effectively enhanced by improving the local apparent surface charge (more active sites and higher charge strength) or introducing a selective layer with dense surface charge on the low concentration side. These material design concepts for asymmetric ion transport are further supported by both simulation and experiment. The results provide a significant comprehension for ion behaviors in nanoconfined space and the development of high-performance energy storage and conversion systems.</p>

Abstract:On the basis of biological ion channels, we constructed TiO2 membranes with rigid channels of 2.3 nm to mimic biomembranes with flexible channels; an external electric field was employed to regulate ion transport in the confined channels at a high ionic strength in the absence of electrical double layer overlap. Results show that transport rates for both Na+ and Mg2+ were decreased irrespective of the direction of the electric field. Furthermore, a voltage-gated selective ion channel was formed, the Mg2+ channel closed at -2 V, and a reversed relative electric field gradient was at the same order of the concentration gradient, whereas the Na+ with smaller Stokes radius and lower valence was less sensitive to the electric field and thus preferentially occupied and passed the channel. Thus, when an external electric field is applied, membranes with larger nanochannels have promising applications in selective separation of mixture salts at a high concentration.

Abstract:The effect of external electric fields (EEFs) on ionic liquid films confined within a nanogap has been investigated by measuring the film thickness with the thin film interferometry and calculating the effective viscosity. Experimental results indicated that the film thickness of ionic liquids could be increased obviously by the application of EEFs with strengths weaker than the electric interactions between cationic head groups and anions. The effect of EEFs on the confined ionic liquid film with a shorter alkyl side chain is more noticeable. It is thought that the charged anions and headgroups of the cations are structured near electrified walls to form ordered layers and short alkyl side chains at the interfaces are aligned along the EEF direction due to induced dipoles.

Abstract:We report a molecular dynamics study of the effect of a static electric field on the structural and dynamical properties of confined protons and water in a fluorinated nanochannel. The applied electric field generates a counter electric field inside the channel, which inhibits unidirectional proton transfer inside the nanochannel. As the external electric field is intensified to some extent, protons have the ability to overcome the internal electric field and effectively complete the transfer through the channel. Further intensifying the electric field produces an additional pathway for proton diffusion and enhances the contribution of the vehicle mechanism to proton transfer in the channel. Nevertheless, the electric field has little effect on the spiral-like hydrogen bond network confined in the channel and maintains a confined hydrogen bond network suitable for proton hopping. These findings deepen the understanding of the effect of electric field on proton transfer along a proton-conductive channel.

Abstract:Strengthening the thermophoresis of nanoscale confined liquid is an intrinsic topic in nanoscale devices and systems. Unfortunately, enhancing thermophoresis via an uncontacted way is still ambiguous, while is quite desirable in technology. In this work, we propose a feasible strategy to enhance the thermophoresis of confined nano-liquid via using external electric field. Moreover, this strategy is demonstrated by a striking case, namely the electric field-intensified thermophoresis of the confined nano-liquid within carbon nanotube, with the aid of molecular dynamics simulation. The interfacial water molecules undergo a configuration transition from the disorder-like to the ordered network-like under the directional electric field-induced hydrogen bond interactions. As a result, the thermophoresis depicts a regular movement under electric field and the velocity increase as high as 99% is also achieved. This work illustrates a great promising potential in seawater desalination, cellular uptake and drug carrier, and nanofiltration membranes.(c) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The selectivity filter of biological ion channels could well split ion's hydration shell at the entryway of channels with subtle opening sizes, leading to the 'naked' ion's rapid transport across the channels. Numerous artificial nanochannels have been developed for mimicking this. However, the precise fabrication of nanochannels/nanopores with targeted diameters has been always a challenge. Herein, we employ the immiscible liquid-infused channels to regulate the ion's hydration shell and mimic the ion transport processes. Experimental and theoretical results show the partial removal of water molecules around ions at the entrance of the nanochannels and low-resistance migration of ions in the immiscible liquid phase. Compared with the pristine membrane, the cross-membrane conductance and osmotic energy power density of the proposed membrane have increased by ~4-fold and ~77.3%, respectively. Moreover, this approach avoids the far-reached technique and could be easily adapted to various membrane materials. Therefore, this strategy holds great potential in systems requiring ion transport across membranes, including ion separation, battery, and desalination, etc.

Abstract:In this work, we propose a new design to enhance ion transport in pressure-driven nanofluidic systems for energy harvesting. The proposed system uses two counter-charged nanochannels, i.e., one of the channels is negatively charged while the other one is positively charged. Under a pressure gradient, cations and anions move through negatively and positively charged channels, respectively, in different directions and contribute to the streaming current. Molecular dynamics simulations are employed to study the effects of surface charge density, channel height, and pressure gradient on the streaming current. Compared with the traditional system, where the nanochannel is negatively charged, the streaming current in the proposed system can be enhanced by a factor up to 6.6. In addition to the involvement of both cations and anions, the enhanced current in the proposed system is caused by the strengthened ionic fluxes due to relatively low-energy barriers for ions entering the channels.

Abstract:The transport of ionic species through a nanochannel plays important roles in fundamental research and practical applications of the nanofluidic device. Here, we demonstrated that ionic transport selectivity of a positively charged nanochannel membrane can be tuned under a phosphoric acid gradient. When phosphoric acid solution and analyte solution were connected by the positively charged nanochannel membrane, the faster-moving analyte through the positively charged nanochannel membrane was the positively charged dye (methylviologen, MV(2+)) instead of the negatively charged dye (1,5-naphthalene disulfonate, NDS(2-)). In other words, a reversed ion selectivity of the nanochannel membranes can be found. It can be explained as a result of the combination of diffusion, induced electroosmosis, and induced electrophoresis. In addition, the influencing factors of transport selectivity, including concentration of phosphoric acid, penetration time, and volume of feed solution, were also investigated. The results showed that the transport selectivity can further be tuned by adjusting these factors. As a method of tuning ionic transport selectivity by establishing phosphoric acid gradient, it will be conducive to improving the separation of ionic species.

Abstract:Ion transport in nanochannels attracts increasing attention with the advance of nanotechnology, where ion rectification has been intensively studied due to its diode-like electrokinetic behavior. However, the electrochemical interface in most ion rectification is not uniform but involves asymmetric-charged characteristics that offer new degrees of electrical double layer (EDL) confinement. Herein, we investigate the ion transport in coupling asymmetric charged nanochannel to evaluate how the asymmetric geometry and surface charge influences the ion rectification performance. The results show that at low surface charge gradient, the coupling effect enhances ion rectification performance. While at high surface charge gradient, an anomalous electrokinetic behavior is observed that coupling effect deteriorates ion rectification performance. Further analysis discloses that the enhancement-deterioration transition threshold depends on the coordination mechanism of asymmetric geometry and surface charge. It is found that the asymmetric geometry shaped nanochannel with low surface charge gradient and homogeneous geometry shaped nanochannel with high surface charge gradient have the better ion rectification performance. This work fills the gap in understanding the coupling asymmetry effect on ion rectification, providing the useful guidance to design nanofluidic energy devices.
