Abstract:The construction of MOF monoliths can solve the drawbacks of MOF powders in practical applications that can cause high pressure drop, low mass transfer efficiency, clogging, and complicated operation and recycling treatment, but there are still problems such as MOF pore clogging, difficulty in tuning the pore structure of the monoliths, and poor mechanical properties. Herein, nearly pure ZIF-8 monoliths with hierarchical pore structure were prepared by in-situ converting the amorphous ZIF-8/ZnO nanoparticles stabilized HIPE templates into continuous ZIF-8 skeleton. The obtained ZIF-8 monoliths exhibit low bulk densities of similar to 80 mg cm(-3), high BET surface areas of up to 961.3 m(2)/g, and good mechanical properties. The monolith maintained high catalytic activity for 30 h in the Knoevenagel reaction using a homemade continuous flow reactor, revealing its high efficiency and good stability. This work provides a worth-adopted approach to prepare MOF-based monoliths for applications such as adsorption, separation, catalysis and effluent treatment.
Structurally Designed Synthesis of Mechanically Stable Poly(benzoxazine-co-resol)-Based Porous Carbon Monoliths and Their Application As High-Performance CO2 Capture Sorbents

Abstract:Porous carbon monoliths with defined multi-length scale pore structures, a nitrogen-containing framework, and high mechanical strength were synthesized through a self-assembly of poly(benzoxazine-co-resol) and a carbonization process. Importantly, this synthesis can be easily scaled up to prepare carbon monoliths with identical pore structures. By controlling the reaction conditions, porous carbon monoliths exhibit fully interconnected macroporosity and mesoporosity with cubic Im3m symmetry and can withstand a press pressure of up to 15.6 MPa. The use of amines in the synthesis results in a nitrogen-containing framework of the carbon monolith, as evidenced by the cross-polarization magic-angle-spinning NMR characterization. With such designed structures, the carbon monoliths show outstanding CO2 capture and separation capacities, high selectivity, and facile regeneration at room temperature. At similar to 1 bar, the equilibrium capacities of the monoliths are in the range of 3.3-4.9 mmol g(-1) at 0 degrees C and of 2.6-3.3 mmol g(-1) at 25 degrees C, while the dynamic capacities are in the range of 2.7-4.1 wt % at 25 degrees C using 14% (v/v) CO2 in N-2. The carbon monoliths exhibit high selectivity for the capture of CO2 over N-2 from a CO2/N-2 mixture, with a separation factor ranging from 13 to 28. Meanwhile, they undergo a facile CO2 release in an argon stream at 25 degrees C, indicating a good regeneration capacity.

Abstract:A highly ordered mesoporous carbon monolith has been successfully synthesized from the template of SBA-15 powder. Interestingly, not only the size and shape of the mesoporous carbon monolith could be simply tailored by controlling the size and shape of a vessel, but also macrocracks on the carbon monolith could be avoided. X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen sorption, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), mechanical stability test, and conductivity test were used to characterize the mesoporous carbon monolith, which exhibits the improved long-range mesostructured order, higher mechanically stable mesostructure, and superior conductivity, compared with mesoporous carbon monolith synthesized from SBA-15 monolith.
Facile Synthesis of MOF-5-derived Porous Carbon with Adjustable Pore Size for CO2 Capture

Abstract:In this study, a facile strategy is reported for the preparation of porous carbon materials with adjustable pore size through carbonization of MOF-5 at 900 degrees C with the assistance of different additives. Results show that the physical and chemical properties (such as morphology, carbon defect content, BET specific surface area, pore structure) of the porous carbon materials can be adjusted through introduction of different compounds (i.e., C16H32O2, C6H14O6, C18H36O2, Na2CO3, KOH, Cu(NO3)2, NaCl, KCl, MgCl2, ethyl cellulose) during the carbon-ization processes. CO2 adsorption experiment results show that there is a linear relationship between the CO2 adsorption capacity (at 25 degrees C and 0.15 bar) and the cumulative pore volume of pores at 5-7 angstrom, suggesting that pores in the range of 5-7 angstrom play a major role in CO2 adsorption at such condition. While the CO2 adsorption capacity (at 25 degrees C and 0.15 bar) is independent on the BET specific surface area of the materials. Among the prepared porous carbon materials, 5C-C6H14O6-900 exhibits the highest CO2 adsorption capacity (i.e., 3.32 mmol/g at 25 degrees C and 1 bar, 0.88 mmol/g at 25 degrees C and 0.15 bar), with good adsorption/desorption cycle stability and CO2/N2 selectivity. Our work provides a facile and general method to adjust and control the pore size dis-tribution of MOF-derived porous carbon materials. Besides, the analysis results indicate that the micropores in a specific pore size range play a decisive role in the adsorption of CO2 at low pressure, which provides a new idea for the preparation of high-efficiency adsorbents at low pressures.

Abstract:A simple one-step nanocasting route has been demonstrated to synthesize ordered mesoporous carbon with graphitic frameworks. In the synthesis, the complicated carbon precursor impregnation step is no longer used and the carbon precursor (soybean oil) is incorporated into the mesopore channels in the hydrophobic domain of the triblock copolymers due to the coordination function through the preparation the ordered mesoporous silica SBA-15. It was found that the as-prepared graphitic carbon material has an ordered 2D hexagonal mesostructure with a rod-like morphology, a high specific surface area (813.7 m(2) g(-1)) and a large pore volume (0.758 cm(3) g(-1)), giving the material wide potential applications as catalyst support, adsorbent and electrode material.

Abstract:Monolithic carbon with hierarchically porous structure has a promising prospect for a wide range of applications in the fields of energy, environment, catalysis, etc. Due to the reliance on the utilization of templating agents, conventional preparation approaches often suffer from time-consuming preparation, complex post-processing, and uneconomical cost. Herein, we develop a novel strategy to match the sol-gel transition with the phase separation process for the direct preparation of hierarchically porous carbon monolith (HPCM) without templating agent. Resorcinol and resol are employed as carbon sources to adjust the polymerization for the formation of bi-continuous microstructure. Well-defined hierarchical pores and large specific surface area for fast mass diffusion enable the HPCM to be a prospective kind of electrode material in supercapacitor with an outstanding specific capacitance over 350 F g −1 (1.0 A g −1 ). After facile sulfonation, the modified HPCM can act as solid acid catalyst to realize a high-performance production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) in a 90 % yield with turnover frequency (TOF) value up to 155.9 h −1 . Additionally, HPCM also exhibits an excellent Joule heating effect, which can be applied to the thermal management after compounding with phase change materials. The desirable integrated performance enables HPCM to be a valuable material suitable for various applications.

Abstract:Porous carbon materials are of interest in many applications because of their high surface area and physicochemical properties. Conventional syntheses can only produce randomly porous materials, with little control over the pore-size distributions, let alone mesostructures. Recent breakthroughs in the preparation of other porous materials have resulted in the development of methods for the preparation of mesoporous carbon materials with extremely high surface areas and ordered mesostructures, with potential applications as catalysts, separation media, and advanced electronic materials in many scientific disciplines. Current syntheses can be categorized as either hard-template or soft-template methods. Both are examined in this Review along with procedures for surface functionalization of the carbon materials obtained.

Abstract:So far it is difficult to achieve both a high graphitization degree and uniform mesopores in carbons, especially via a sustainable synthesis approach. This work shows that mesoporous graphitized carbons predominantly composed of amorphous and/or partially graphitic carbon nanotubes can be obtained by a simple mechanochemical synthesis using tannins as carbon precursors, iron salt as a graphitization catalyst and block copolymer as a soft template. The one-pot synthesis relied on the fast ball milling of a Pluronic-type template, tannins, and iron salt, followed by the direct thermal treatment at a certain temperature (e.g., 750 °C) leading to mesoporous carbons with a high degree of graphitization (up to 75%), high specific surface areas up to 360 m 2 /g, and large mesopore volumes up to 0.40 cm 3 /g. Moreover, the procedure can be extended for the synthesis of highly porous activated carbons with uniform mesoporosity by adding potassium oxalate to the milling system. The procedure afforded activated mesoporous carbons with substantially uniform mesopores of about 7.7 nm, a high specific surface area of 1100 m 2 /g, a large pore volume of 0.84 cm 3 /g, and enhanced CO 2 adsorption capacity up to 4.0 mmol/g at ambient conditions. This synthetic approach offers advantages in terms of scalability, simplicity, and reduced environmental impact in comparison to traditional synthesis methods.

Abstract:Highly ordered mesoporous graphitic carbon was synthesized from a simple surfactant-assisted nanocasting route, in which ordered mesoporous silica SBA-15 maintaining its triblock copolymer surfactant was used as a hard template and natural soybean oil (SBO) as a carbon precursor. The hydrophobic domain of the surfactant assisted SBO in infiltration into the template’s mesoporous channels. After the silica template was carbonized and removed, a higher yield of highly-ordered graphitic mesoporous carbon with rod-like morphology was obtained. Because of the improved structural ordering, the mesoporous carbon after amine modification could adsorb more CO 2 compared with the amine-functionalized carbon prepared without the assistance of surfactant.
A Simple Melt Impregnation Method to Synthesize Ordered Mesoporous Carbon and Carbon Nanofiber Bundles with Graphitized Structure from Pitches

Abstract:In this paper, we report a simple melt impregnation method by using cheap mesophase pitches (MPs) as carbon precursors to prepare ordered mesoporous carbon with ordered graphitized pore walls at low temperature. This facile procedure includes melting MPs at 140 degreesC and impregnation of the melt into hexagonal or bicontinuous cubic mesoporous silica templates. After the removal of silica templates by HF solution, ordered mesoporous carbon materials with replica structures of 2-D hexagonal p6mm or cubic Ia (3) over bard symmetry were derived. The pore walls of the hexagonal mesoporous carbon products are composed of graphitized domains with the (002) crystallographic plane of the graphite perpendicular to the long axis of the carbon nanorods. Theoretical computations show that negatively charged O atoms of Si-OH and Si-O-Si from the surface of mesoporous silica channels can interact with the positive charged H atoms of the MPs, which makes the stacking units incorporate into the pores with the (002) plane vertical to the channels, and finally the oriented periodicity of the graphite domains is formed. N(2) sorption measurements show that the materials possess no micropores. For the bicontinuous cubic mesoporous carbon, HRTEM images show that the material is a true replica framework of la3 ($) over bard symmetry. The graphitized structure of the pore walls seems to have an orientation related to the bicontinuous pore structure, which could not be simply defined based on current TEM results. Graphitized carbon nanofiber bundles with a uniform diameter of about 7 nm were obtained by using Fe(2)O(3) nanoparticle doped mesoporous silica as a template. A spiral graphite structure was observed for the materials. Cyclic voltammetry measurements show low charge/discharge currents for the graphitized materials compared to the amorphous mesoporous carbon, further confirming the anisotropic character of the graphitized mesoporous carbons. The method can be widely applied to the hard-templating synthesis of graphitized carbon nanostructures and other doped carbon nanomaterials.

Abstract:Transparent ordered mesostructured resin-silica composite monoliths with uniform rectangular shape which fully copies the inner-shape of vessels and size (5 x 3 x 0.3 cm(3)) are prepared via a facile approach of evaporation induced self-assembly (EISA) without adding any protecting agent by using triblock copolymer Pluronic F127 as a template. Ordered mesoporous carbon-silica composite monoliths can be obtained in a wide range of silica content (34-82 wt %) after calcination in N(2). Monolithic shape can be maintained with shrinkage (similar to 20%) in sizes. Furthermore, each component of the composites can be easily removed after the simple post treatments. After etching silica, mesoporous carbon monoliths retain the same in shape and sizes, but show much larger gore volume (similar to 2.65 cm(3)/g) and higher surface area (similar to 1800 m(2)/g) than the carbon silica composites. Besides, mesoporous silica monoliths with large pore size (similar to 14.6 nm) show an integral and uniform shape after air combustion. The obtained mesoporous carbon monoliths show high capacitance (186 F/g) and high cycling stability (8% capacitance loss after 1000 cycles), exhibiting an excellent potential in capacitor applications.

Abstract:This article presents a one-pot method to synthesize hierarchically ordered porous carbons with interconnected macropores and mespores, via in situ self-assembly of colloidal polymer and silica spheres with sucrose as the carbon source. Compared with other techniques, this procedure is veritably simple; neither presynthesis of the macropore/mesopore or crystal templates nor additional infiltration is needed, and the self-assembly of polymer spheres into the crystal template and the infiltration are finished in situ in the same system. The sizes of macropores and mesopores can be independently tuned by the sizes of polymer and silica spheres, respectively. The obtained bimodal porous carbons have large BET surface areas, large pore volumes, and partially graphitized frameworks. They show very good support of the Pt−Ru alloy catalyst in a direct methanol fuel cell.

Abstract:A facile dual-templating approach is demonstrated to prepare hierarchically ordered macro-/mesoporous carbons. Monodispersed silica colloidal crystals are used as a hard template, amphiphilic triblock copolymer PEO-PPO-PEO as a soft template, and soluble resols as a carbon source. The procedure involves packing and aging of silica microspheres, evaporation-induced organic-organic assembly of mesostructures in the void of microspheres, thermosetting and carbonization of phenolic formaldehyde (PF), and removal of silica scaffolds by HF. The obtained porous carbons have a highly ordered face-centered cubic macrostructure with tunable pore sizes of 230-430 nm and interconnected windows with a size of 30-65 nm. The rigid silica hard templates can prevent the shrinkage of the mesostructure during the thermosetting and carbonization process, resulting in large cell parameters (similar to 18 nm) and pore sizes (similar to 11 nm). The bimodal porous carbon materials have large BET surface areas (up to 760 m(2)/g), large pore volumes (similar to 1.25 cm(3)/g), and partially graphitized frameworks. With the increase in the silica sphere diameter, the BET surface areas and the window sizes increase. The hierarchically ordered carbon structures show strong diffraction at wavelengths of 500-690 nm depending on the treatment used.

Abstract:Porous carbon/silica composite monoliths were generated by pyrolyzing the organic/inorganic nanocomposites rendered from co-polymerization of carbon precursor (RF: resorcinol–formaldehyde) and silica precursor (TEOS). For RF/silica composites, the gelation time was greatly reduced, and the weight residual percentage was increased with increasing TEOS content. At a proper reactant ratio, crack-free monolithic RF/silica composites with negligible shrinkage were obtained by ambient pressure drying. The structure of RF/silica and carbon/silica composites was investigated by combining SEM and N2 adsorption measurements. The results revealed that their textural properties can be tailored by variation of the reactant ratio and the initial pH values. The porous carbon/silica composite with the largest BET surface area of 622m2/g, exhibited mesopores and macropores simultaneously, resulting in a low apparent density about 0.552g/cm3.

Abstract:In the preparing processes of porous carbon, the development of porous structure was highly related to the evolution of graphitic crystalline structure.Meanwhile, the porous structure will be collapse as the crystallinity increases.Development of porous with both high surface area and graphitization degree has attracted considerable research attention in the fields of gas adsorption and electrochemical energy storage.With the assistant of CO2 atmosphere, porous carbons can be one-step synthesized by using the FeCl3·6H2O and low-cost Chinese Zhundong coal as the metal and carbon precursor, respectively.As a result, with the increase of FeCl3 addition, the surface area increased from 346 m2·g-1 to 574 m2·g-1.Besides, the graphitization degree improved simultaneously with IG/IAll increasing from 8.774％ to 9.328％.Through the analysis, CO2 can be in situ generated by using iron oxides derived from the hydrolysis-pyrolysis of FeCl3·6H2O and CO from the pyrolysisactivation processes, and etch the carbon-based coal framework to create micropore.Fe3C could be generated by the reaction between amorphous carbon and reductant Fe.Accompanied by the carbon dissolution-precipitation procedure, graphitization degree has be improved.Meanwhile, some mesopore could be released in pickling process.In general, FeCl3 was template and activation agent, and has catalytic effect of graphitization.
Facile Synthesis of Highly Porous Metal Oxides by Mechanochemical Nanocasting

Abstract:Metal oxides with high porosity usually exhibit better performance in many applications, as compared with the corresponding bulk materials. Template-assisted method is generally employed to prepare porous metal oxides. However, the template-assisted method is commonly operated in wet conditions, which requires solvents, soluble metal oxide precursors, and a long time for drying. To overwhelm those drawbacks of the wet procedure, a mechanochemical nano casting method is developed in the current work. Inspired by solid-state synthesis, this strategy proceeds without solvents, and the ball milling process can enable pores replicated in a shorter time (60 min). By this method, a series of highly porous metal oxides were obtained, with several cases approaching the corresponding surface area records (e.g., ZrO2, 293 m(2) g(-1); Fe2O3, 163 m(2) g(-1); CeO2, 211 m(2) g(-1); CuOx-CeOy catalyst, 237 m(2) g(-1); CuOx-CoOy-CeOz catalyst, 203 m(2) g(-1)). Abundant nanopores with clear lattice fringes in metal oxide products were witnessed by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) in high angle annular dark field (HAADF). By combination of mechanochemical synthesis and nanocasting, current technology provides a general and simple pathway to porous metal oxides.

Abstract:Porous graphitic carbon is essential for many applications such as energy storage devices, catalysts, and sorbents. However, current graphitic carbons are limited by low conductivity, low surface area, and ineffective pore structure. Here we report a scalable synthesis of porous graphitic carbons using a conjugated polymeric molecular framework as precursor. The multivalent cross-linker and rigid conjugated framework help to maintain micro- and mesoporous structures, while promoting graphitization during carbonization and chemical activation. The above unique design results in a class of highly graphitic carbons at temperature as low as 800 °C with record-high surface area (4073 m(2) g(-1)), large pore volume (2.26 cm(-3)), and hierarchical pore architecture. Such carbons simultaneously exhibit electrical conductivity >3 times more than activated carbons, very high electrochemical activity at high mass loading, and high stability, as demonstrated by supercapacitors and lithium-sulfur batteries with excellent performance. Moreover, the synthesis can be readily tuned to make a broad range of graphitic carbons with desired structures and compositions for many applications.

Abstract:Controllable fabrication of mesoporous carbon nanoparticles (MCNs) with tunable pore structures is of great interest, due to the remarkable effect of pore structure on electrochemical performance of the materials. However, it has remained a major challenge. Here, we demonstrate the controlled synthesis of MCNs with tunable closed pore structures via a silica-assisted coassembly strategy, which employs polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) diblock copolymers as soft template, phenolic resol and tetraethyl orthosilicate as carbon and silica precursors, respectively. Through simply varying the sequential cross-linking of the silica and carbon precursors or the copolymer composition, novel MCNs with alluring spherical, hollow-hoop-structured, or yolk-shell-like closed mesopores are tunably prepared. In particular, serving as cathode materials of lithium-sulfur batteries, the resultant silica-hybridized MCNs with the exceptional hollow-hoop mesopores and a moderate sulfur-loading content of 46 wt % exhibit top-level electrochemical performance. This study opens an avenue for tunable construction of mesoporous particles with closed pores and provides clues for the effect of pore geometry on the electrochemical performance of porous cathode materials for lithium-sulfur batteries.
