Abstract:A traditional wavelet is a special case of a vector in a separable Hilbert space that generates a basis under the action of a system of unitary operators defined in terms of translation and dilation operations. A Coxeter/fractal-surface wavelet is obtained by defining fractal surfaces on foldable figures, which tesselate the embedding space by reflections in their bounding hyperplanes instead of by translations along a lattice. Although both theories look different at their onset, there exist connections and communalities which are exhibited in this semi-expository paper. In particular, there is a natural notion of a dilation-reflection wavelet set. We prove that dilation-reflection wavelet sets exist for arbitrary expansive matrix dilations, paralleling the traditional dilation-translation wavelet theory. There are certain measurable sets which can serve simultaneously as dilation-translation wavelet sets and dilation-reflection wavelet sets, although the orthonormal structures generated in the two theories are considerably different.

Abstract:This is (raw) lecture notes of the course read on 6th European intensive course on Complex Analysis (Coimbra, Portugal) in 2000. Our purpose is to describe a general framework for generalizations of the complex analysis. As a consequence a classification scheme for different generalizations is obtained. The framework is based on wavelets (coherent states) in Banach spaces generated by ``admissible'' group representations. Reduced wavelet transform allows naturally describe in abstract term main objects of an analytical function theory: the Cauchy integral formula, the Hardy and Bergman spaces, the Cauchy-Riemann equation, and the Taylor expansion. Among considered examples are classical analytical function theories (one complex variables, several complex variables, Clifford analysis, Segal-Bargmann space) as well as new function theories which were developed within our framework (function theory of hyperbolic type, Clifford version of Segal-Bargmann space). We also briefly discuss applications to the operator theory (functional calculus) and quantum mechanics.
On new fractal phenomena connected with infinite linear IFS

Abstract:We establish several new fractal and number theoretical phenomena connected with expansions which are generated by infinite linear iterated function systems. First of all we show that the systems $\Phi$ of cylinders of generalized Lüroth expansions are, generally speaking, not faithful for the Hausdorff dimension calculation. Using Yuval Peres' approach, we prove sufficient conditions for the non-faithfulness of such families of cylinders. On the other hand, rather general sufficient conditions for the faithfulness of such covering systems are also found. As a corollary of our main results, we obtain the non-faithfullness of the family of cylinders generated by the classical Lüroth expansion. Possible infinite entropy of the stochastic vector $Q_\infty$ which determines the metric relations for partitions of the generalized Lüroth expansions, possible non-faithfulness of the family $\Phi(Q_\infty)$ and the absence of general formulae for the calculation of the Hausdorff dimension even for probability measures with independent identically distributed symbols of generalized Lüroth expansions are all facts that do not allow to apply usual probabilistic methods, as well as methods of dynamical systems to study fractal properties of corresponding subsets of non-normal numbers. Despite of the above mentioned difficulties, we develop new approach to the study of subsets of $Q_\infty$-essentially non-normal numbers and prove (without any additional restrictions on the stochastic vector $Q_{\infty}$) that this set is superfractal. This result answers the open problem mentioned in \cite{AKNT2} and completes the metric, dimensional and topological classification of real numbers via the asymptotic behaviour of frequencies their digits in the generalized Lüroth expansion.

Notes on affine W-algebras

Abstract:These are expanded and revised notes for a minicourse entitled "Affine W-algebras", which took place as part of the thematic month "Quantum Symmetries" at the Centre de Recherches Mathematiques in Montreal, Canada in October 2022. The first few sections consist of rapid introductions to vertex algebras, affine Kac-Moody algebras and their integrable and admissible modules, and the homological BRST procedure for quantum Hamiltonian reduction. The affine W-algebras are defined using these ingredients. The remainder of the notes treats the structure and representation theory of the exceptional affine W-algebras, with emphasis on modular tensor categories of representations.

Abstract:In this contribution, we study the notion of affine invariance (specifically, invariance to the shifting, scaling, and rotation of the coordinate system) as a starting point for the development of mathematical tools and approaches useful in the characterization and analysis of multivariate fractional Brownian motion (fBm) fields. In particular, using a rigorous and powerful distribution theoretic formulation, we extend previous results of Blu and Unser (2006) to the multivariate case, showing that polyharmonic splines and fBm processes can be seen as the (deterministic vs stochastic) solutions to an identical fractional partial differential equation that involves a fractional Laplacian operator. We then show that wavelets derived from polyharmonic splines have a behavior similar to the fractional Laplacian, which also turns out to be the whitening operator for fBm fields. This fact allows us to study the probabilistic properties of the wavelet transform coefficients of fBm-like processes, leading for instance to ways of estimating the Hurst exponent of a multiparameter process from its wavelet transform coefficients. We provide theoretical and experimental verification of these results. To complement the toolbox available for multiresolution processing of stochastic fractals, we also introduce an extended family of multidimensional multiresolution spaces for a large class of (separable and nonseparable) lattices of arbitrary dimensionality.

Abstract:We forge connections between the theory of fractal sets obtained as attractors of iterated function systems and process calculi. To this end, we reinterpret Milner's expressions for processes as contraction operators on a complete metric space. When the space is, for example, the plane, the denotations of fixed point terms correspond to familiar fractal sets. We give a sound and complete axiomatization of fractal equivalence, the congruence on terms consisting of pairs that construct identical self-similar sets in all interpretations. We further make connections to labelled Markov chains and to invariant measures. In all of this work, we use important results from process calculi. For example, we use Rabinovich's completeness theorem for trace equivalence in our own completeness theorem. In addition to our results, we also raise many questions related to both fractals and process calculi.

Fluctuations in 2D reversibly-damped turbulence

Abstract:Gallavotti proposed an equivalence principle in hydrodynamics, which states that forced-damped fluids can be equally well represented by means of the Navier-Stokes equations and by means of time reversible dynamical systems called GNS. In the GNS systems, the usual viscosity is replaced by a state-dependent dissipation term which fixes one global quantity. The principle states that the mean values of properly chosen observables are the same for both representations of the fluid. In the same paper, the chaotic hypothesis of Gallavotti and Cohen is applied to hydrodynamics, leading to the conjecture that entropy fluctuations in the GNS system verify a relation first observed in nonequilibrium molecular dynamics. We tested these ideas in the case of two-dimensional fluids. We examined the fluctuations of global quadratic quantities in the statistically stationary state of a) the Navier-Stokes equations; b) the GNS equations. Our results are consistent with the validity of the fluctuation relation, and of the equivalence principle, indicating possible extensions thereof. Moreover, in these results the difference between the Gallavotti-Cohen fluctuation theorem and the Evans-Searles identity is evident.

Abstract:We develop the foundation of the spectral analysis on Barlow-Evans projective limit fractals, or vermiculated spaces, which corresponds to symmetric Markov processes on these spaces. For some new examples, such as the generalized Laakso spaces and a Spierpinski Pâte à Choux, one can develop a complete spectral theory, including the eigenfunction expansions that are analogous to Fourier series. Also, one can construct connected fractal spaces isospectral to the fractal strings of Lapidus and van Frankenhuijsen. Our work is motivated by recent progress in mathematical physics on fractals.

Rearrangement Groups of Fractals: Structure and Conjugacy

Abstract:This dissertation is about rearrangement groups: a class of groups of homeomorphisms of fractal topological spaces. Introduced in 2019 by J. Belk and B. Forrest, this class generalizes the famous trio of Thompson groups $F$, $T$ and $V$ and includes some of their relatives and generalizations. After an introduction to this topic, this dissertation branches into different aspects of rearrangement groups. We first focus on a class of rearrangement groups of tree-like fractals known as Ważewski dendrites. We find finite generating sets for them and their commutator subgroups, we prove that the commutator subgroups are simple (with one possible exception) and we show that these groups are countable dense subgroups of the groups of all homeomorphisms of dendrites. We then provide a sufficient condition to solve the conjugacy problem in rearrangement groups using strand diagram. This condition is not necessary, but understanding how to extend it is related to open problems in computer science. This method solves the conjugacy problem in essentially all known rearrangement groups. Next we study a group property known as invariable generation. With a dynamical approach we prove that transitive enough rearrangement groups are not invariably generated, which applies to most rearrangement group that has been considered so far. Then we study the gluing relation that defines the fractal topological spaces on which rearrangement groups act. We show that it is rational, i.e., there exists a finite-state automaton which reads a pair of elements if and only if they are related. We then show that finite and finitely generated abelian groups are rearrangement groups and that the stabilizers of finite sets of rational points of rearrangement groups are themselves rearrangement groups. Lastly, we prove that every rearrangement group embeds into Thompson's group $V$.

The goal is to introduce families of Dirac operators and how they can be used to study interactions between geometry and topology. In particular, we discuss the index theorem for families of twisted Dirac operators, and its applications to metrics of positive scalar curvature and the three-dimensional Weinstein conjecture.

Abstract:We investigate the multifractal nature of a class of functions which naturally appears in the Weyl asymptotic distribution of the eigenvalues associated with the semi-classical limit of Schrodinger operators with compactly supported non-positive continuous potentials. As a consequence, we obtain a fine description of the local asymptotic distribution of the eigenvalues for potentials whose occupation measure is a Gibbs measure.

Abstract:We introduce iterated graph systems which yield fractal spaces through a projective sequence of self-similar graphs. Our construction yields new examples of self-similar fractals, such as the pentagonal Sierpiński carpet and a pillow-space, and it yields a new framework to study potential theory on many standard examples in the literature, including generalized Sierpiński carpets. We demonstrate that a fractal arising from an iterated graph system satisfying mild geometric conditions and having enough reflection symmetries, satisfies the combinatorial Loewner property (CLP) of Bourdon and Kleiner. For certain exponents, one can also obtain the conductive homogeneity condition of Kigami. This shows, in a precise sense, that self-similarity and sufficient symmetry yields CLP. Furthermore, we show that our examples satisfy important asymptotic behaviors of discrete moduli. In particular, we establish the so-called super-multiplicative inequality for our examples - which when $p=2$ plays a crucial role in the study of Dirichlet forms and random walks on fractals. This implies the super-multiplicativity bound also for many fractals for which it was not known before, such as the Menger sponge. A particular feature here is using replacement flows and the notion of a flow basis. This yields a simpler way to establish many known estimates, and allows us to prove several new ones. Further, super-multiplicativity shows that one can effectively estimate the conformal dimensions numerically for many self-similar fractals.

Abstract:This work reports an extensive study of three-dimensional topological ordered phases that, in one of the directions behave like usual topological order concerning mobility of excitations, but in the perpendicular plane manifest type-II fracton physics dictated by a fractal subsystem symmetry. We obtain an expression for the ground state degeneracy, which depends intricately on the sizes of the plane, signaling a strong manifestation of ultraviolet/infrared (UV/IR) mixing. The ground state degeneracy can be interpreted in terms of spontaneous/explicit breaking of fractal subsystem symmetries. We also study the boundary physics, which in turn is useful to understand the connection with certain two-dimensional phases. Finally, we derive a low-energy but not long-distance effective field theory, by Higgsing a fractal $U(1)$ symmetry and taking the deep IR limit. This description embodies in a natural way several aspects of the phases, such as the content of generalized global symmetries, the role of fractal symmetries on the mobility of excitations, the anomalies, and the boundary physics.

Fractal zeta functions and complex dimensions: A general higher-dimensional theory

Abstract:In 2009, the first author introduced a class of zeta functions, called `distance zeta functions', which has enabled us to extend the existing theory of zeta functions of fractal strings and sprays (initiated by the first author and his collaborators in the early 1990s) to arbitrary bounded (fractal) sets in Euclidean spaces of any dimensions. A closely related tool is the class of `tube zeta functions', defined using the tube function of a fractal set. These zeta functions exhibit deep connections with Minkowski contents and upper box (or Minkowski) dimensions, as well as, more generally, with the complex dimensions of fractal sets. In particular, the abscissa of (Lebesgue, i.e., absolute) convergence of the distance zeta function coincides with the upper box dimension of a set. We also introduce a class of transcendentally quasiperiodic sets, and describe their construction based on a sequence of carefully chosen generalized Cantor sets with two auxilliary parameters. As a result, we obtain a family of "maximally hyperfractal" compact sets and relative fractal drums (i.e., such that the associated fractal zeta functions have a singularity at every point of the critical line of convergence). Finally, we discuss the general fractal tube formulas and the Minkowski measurability criterion obtained by the authors in the context of relative fractal drums (and, in particular, of bounded subsets of the N-dimensional Euclidean space).

Abstract:These are a set of lecture notes on generalized global symmetries in quantum field theory. The focus is on invertible symmetries with a few comments regarding non-invertible symmetries. The main topics covered are the basics of higher-form symmetries and their properties including 't Hooft anomalies, gauging and spontaneous symmetry breaking. We also introduce the useful notion of symmetry topological field theories (SymTFTs). Furthermore, an introduction to higher-group symmetries describing mixings of higher-form symmetries is provided. Some advanced topics covered include the encoding of higher-form symmetries in holography and geometric engineering constructions in string theory. Throughout the text, all concepts are consistently illustrated using gauge theories as examples.

Invariant Distributions of Partially Hyperbolic Systems: Fractal Graphs, Excessive Regularity, and Rigidity

Abstract:We introduce a novel approach linking fractal geometry to partially hyperbolic dynamics, revealing several new phenomena related to regularity jumps and rigidity. One key result demonstrates a sharp phase transition for partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms $f \in \mathrm{Diff}^\infty_{\mathrm{vol}}(\mathbb{T}^3)$ with a contracting center direction: $f$ is $C^\infty$-rigid if and only if both $E^s$ and $E^c$ exhibit Hölder exponents exceeding the expected threshold. Specifically, we prove: If the Hölder exponent of $E^s$ exceeds the expected value, then $E^s$ is $C^{1+}$ and $E^u \oplus E^s$ is jointly integrable. If the Hölder exponent of $E^c$ exceeds the expected value, then $W^c$ forms a $C^{1+}$ foliation. If $E^s$ (or $E^c$) does not exhibit excessive Hölder regularity, it must have a fractal graph. These and related results originate from a general non-fractal invariance principle: for a skew product $F$ over a partially hyperbolic system $f$, if $F$ expands fibers more weakly than $f$ along $W^u_f$ in the base, then for any $F$-invariant section, if $\Phi$ has no a fractal graph, then it is smooth along $W^u_f$ and holonomy-invariant. Motivated by these findings, we propose a new conjecture on the stable fractal or stable smooth behavior of invariant distributions in typical partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms.

Substructures of the Weyl group and their physical applications

Abstract:We study substructures of the Weyl group of conformal transformations of the metric of (pseudo)Riemannian manifolds. These substructures are identified by differential constraints on the conformal factors of the transformations which are chosen such that their composition is associative. Mathematically, apart from rare exceptions, they are partial associative groupoids, not groups, so they do not have an algebra of infinitesimal transformations, but this limitation can be partially circumvented using some of their properties cleverly. We classify and discuss the substructures with two-derivatives differential constraints, the most famous of which being known as the harmonic or restricted Weyl group in the physics literature, but we also show the existence of a lightcone constraint which realizes a proper subgroup of the Weyl group. We then show the physical implications that come from invariance under the two most important substructures, concentrating on classical properties of the energy-momentum tensor and a generalization of the quantum trace anomaly. We also elaborate further on the harmonic substructure, which can be interpreted as partial gauge fixing of full Weyl invariance using BRST methods. Finally, we discuss how to construct differential constraints of arbitrary higher-derivative order and present, as examples, generalizations involving scalar constraints with four and six derivatives.
