Abstract:Abstract Curves are essential concepts that enable compounded aesthetic curves, e.g., to assemble complex silhouettes, match a specific curvature profile in industrial design, and construct smooth, comfortable, and safe trajectories in vehicle-robot navigation systems. New mechanisms able to encode, generate, evaluate, and deform aesthetic curves are expected to improve the throughput and the quality of industrial design. In recent years, the study of (log) aesthetic curves have attracted the community’s attention due to its ubiquity in natural phenomena such as bird eggs, butterfly wings, falcon flights, and manufactured products such as Japanese swords and automobiles. A (log) aesthetic curve renders a logarithmic curvature graph approximated by a straight line, and polar aesthetic curves enable to mode user-defined dynamics of the polar tangential angle in the polar coordinate system. As such, the curvature profile often becomes a by-product of the tangential angle. In this paper, we extend the concept of polar aesthetic curves and establish the analytical formulations to construct aesthetic curves with user-defined criteria. In particular, we propose the closed-form analytic characterizations of polar log-aesthetic curves meeting user-defined criteria of curvature profiles and dynamics of polar tangential angles. We present numerical examples portraying the feasibility of rendering the logarithmic curvature graphs represented by a straight line. Our approach enables the seamless characterization of aesthetic curves in the polar co-ordinate system, which can model aesthetic shapes with desirable aesthetic curvature profiles.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss some problems of elementary plane differential geometry and kinematics. Although the results are not new, the consistent use of complex-valued functions (plane curves) of a real variable (parameter) allows to derive them ab ovo in a particularly simple, uniform and transparent way. Abstract:By interpreting planar polynomial curves as complex-valued functions of a real parameter, an inner product, norm, metric function, and the notion of orthogonality may be defined for such curves. This approach is applied to the complex pre-image polynomials that generate planar Pythagorean-hodograph (PH) curves, to facilitate the implementation of bounded modifications of them that preserve their PH nature. The problems of bounded modifications under the constraint of fixed curve end points and end tangent directions, and of increasing the arc length of a PH curve by a prescribed amount, are also addressed.

Abstract:Polar spaces over finite fields are fundamental in combinatorial geometry. The concept of polar space was firstly introduced by F. Veldkamp who gave a system of 10 axioms in the spirit of Universal Algebra. Later the axioms were simplified by J. Tits, who introduced the concept of subspaces. Later on, from the point of view of incidence geometry, axioms of polar spaces were also given by F. Buekenhout and E. Shult in 1974. The reader can find the three systems of axioms of polar spaces in Appendix A. Examples of polar spaces are the so called Finite classical polar spaces, i.e. incidence structures arising from quadrics, symplectic forms and Hermitian forms, which are in correspondance with reflexive sesquilinear <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://forms.It" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> is still an open problem to show whether or not classical polar spaces are the only example of finite polar spaces. Nowadays, some research problems related to finite classical polar space are: existence of spreads and ovoids; existence of regular systems and $m$-ovoids; upper or lower bounds on partial spreads and partial ovoids. Moreover, polar spaces are in relation with combinatorial objects as regular graphs, block designs and association schemes. In this Ph.D. Thesis we investigate the geometry of finite classical polar spaces, giving contributions to the above problems. The thesis is organized as follows. Part I is more focused on the geometric aspects of polar spaces, while in Part II some combinatorial objects are introduced such as regular graphs, association schemes and combinatorial designs. Finally Appendix B, C and D are dedicated to give more details on, respectively, maximal curves, linear codes and combinatorial designs, giving useful results and definitions.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the geometry of projective varieties polarised by ample and more generally nef and big Weil divisors. First we study birational boundedness of linear systems. We show that if $X$ is a projective variety of dimension $d$ with $\epsilon $ -lc singularities for $\epsilon >0$ , and if $N$ is a nef and big Weil divisor on $X$ such that $N-K_{X}$ is pseudo-effective, then the linear system $|mN|$ defines a birational map for some natural number $m$ depending only on $d,\epsilon $ . This is key to proving various other results. For example, it implies that if $N$ is a big Weil divisor (not necessarily nef) on a klt Calabi-Yau variety of dimension $d$ , then the linear system $|mN|$ defines a birational map for some natural number $m$ depending only on $d$ . It also gives new proofs of some known results, for example, if $X$ is an $\epsilon $ -lc Fano variety of dimension $d$ then taking $N=-K_{X}$ we recover birationality of $|-mK_{X}|$ for bounded $m$ . We prove similar birational boundedness results for nef and big Weil divisors $N$ on projective klt varieties $X$ when both $K_{X}$ and $N-K_{X}$ are pseudo-effective (here $X$ is not assumed $\epsilon $ -lc). Using the above, we show boundedness of polarised varieties under some natural conditions. We extend these to boundedness of semi-log canonical Calabi-Yau pairs polarised by effective ample Weil divisors not containing lc centres. We will briefly discuss applications to existence of projective coarse moduli spaces of such polarised Calabi-Yau pairs.

Abstract:In many fields of computer science such as computer animation, computer graphics, computer aided geometric design and robotics, it is a common problem to detect the positional relationships of several entities. Based on generalized characteristic polynomials and projective transformations, algebraic conditions are derived for detecting the various positional relationships between two planar conics, namely, outer separation, exterior contact, intersection, interior contact and inclusion. Then the results are applied to detecting the positional relationships between a cylinder (or a cone) and a quadric. The criteria is very effective and easier to use than other known methods.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a new characterization of the split-complex numbers as a vector space $LC_2= \{xI+yE : x,y \in \mathbb{R},\, E^2=I \}$ of operators, where $I$ is the identity operator and $E$ is the unit shift operator that are operating on the space $\mathbb{P}_2$ of all real-valued $2$-periodic functions. We also characterize the field of the complex number $\mathbb{C}= \{x+yi: x, y \in \mathbb{R}, i^2 =-1 \}$ as the space of linear operators of the form $ \{xI+yE, E^2 = -I \}$, where $I$ is the identity operator and $E$ the unit shift operator that are regarded as operating on the vector space $\mathbb{AP}_2 $ of all real-valued $2$-antiperiodic functions. In an analogy to the polar form of complex numbers, we form the hyperbolic form of some subset $ \mathcal{H} $ of the elements of $LC_2 $. We study some properties of the elements of $LC_2$, the trace, the determinant, invertibility conditions, and others. We study some elementary functions defined on subsets of $LC_2$ as compared and contrasted with the usual complex functions. We study properties like continuity, differentiability and define the holomorphic condition of $LC_2$ functions in a different sense than complex functions. We establish the line integrals of the vector-valued functions in $LC_2$ and compare them against the well known results for complex functions of a complex variable.

Complex solutions of polynomial equations on the unit circle

Abstract:We explore systems of polynomial equations where we seek complex solutions with absolute value 1. Geometrically, this amounts to understanding intersections of algebraic varieties with tori -- Cartesian powers of the unit circle. We study the properties of varieties in which this intersection is Zariski dense, give a criterion for Zariski density and use it to show that the problem is decidable. This problem is a ``continuous'' analogue of the Manin-Mumford conjecture for the multiplicative group of complex numbers, however, the results are very different from Manin-Mumford. While the results of the paper appear to be new, the proofs are quite elementary. This is an expository article aiming to introduce some classical mathematical topics to a general audience. We also list some exercises and problems at the end for the curious reader to further explore these topics.

Abstract:This is the second part of our work on Zariski decomposition structures, where we compare two different volume type functions for curve classes. The first function is the polar transform of the volume for ample divisor classes. The second function captures the asymptotic geometry of curves analogously to the volume function for divisors. We prove that the two functions coincide, generalizing Zariski's classical result for surfaces to all varieties. Our result confirms the log concavity conjecture of the first named author for weighted mobility of curve classes in an unexpected way, via Legendre-Fenchel type transforms. We also give a number of applications to birational geometry, including a refined structure theorem for the movable cone of curves.

Abstract:In this work, we discuss the feasibility of the well-known classical polar curves (limacons, roses, and logarithmic spirals), studied in calculus courses, to emerge naturally as trajectories of a mass-spring system, limited to moving along a passing axis that rotates in a uniform circular motion with controlled angular velocity. Simulations using the free software Modellus visually show how the appearance of polar curves is closely related to the initial conditions of the problem. A discussion about the physical reality of more general orbits, with multiple return points, is presented considering the attractive and repulsive character of the central force field promoted by the elastic force present in the system considered.
