Abstract:Abstract The response of tropical high clouds to surface warming and their radiative feedbacks are uncertain. For example, it is uncertain whether their coverage will contract or expand in response to surface warming and whether such changes entail a stabilizing radiative feedback (iris feedback) or a neutral feedback. Global satellite observations with passive and active remote sensing capabilities over the last two decades can now be used to address such effects that were previously observationally limited. Using these observations, we show that the vertically averaged coverage exhibits no significant contraction or expansion. However, we find a reduction in coverage at the altitude where high clouds peak and are particularly radiatively‐relevant. This results in a negative longwave (LW) feedback and a positive shortwave (SW) feedback which cancel to yield a near‐zero high‐cloud amount feedback, providing observational evidence against an iris feedback. Next, we find that tropical high clouds have risen but have also warmed, leading to a positive, but small, high‐cloud altitude feedback dominated by the LW feedback. Finally, we find that high clouds have been thinning, leading to a near‐zero high‐cloud optical depth feedback from a cancellation between negative LW and positive SW feedbacks. Overall, high clouds lead the total tropical cloud feedback to be small due to the negative LW‐positive SW feedback cancellations.

Abstract:Reduction of surface temperatures of the planet by injecting sulfate aerosols in the stratosphere has been suggested as an option to reduce the amount of human-induced climate warming. Several previous studies have shown that for a specified amount of injection, aerosols injected at a higher altitude in the stratosphere would produce more cooling because aerosol sedimentation would take longer. In this study, we isolate and assess the sensitivity of stratospheric aerosol radiative forcing and the resulting climate change to the altitude of the aerosol layer. We study this by prescribing a specified amount of sulfate aerosols, of a size typical of what is produced by volcanoes, distributed uniformly at different levels in the stratosphere. We find that stratospheric sulfate aerosols are more effective in cooling climate when they reside higher in the stratosphere. We explain this sensitivity in terms of effective radiative forcing: volcanic aerosols heat the stratospheric layers where they reside, altering stratospheric water vapor content, tropospheric stability, and clouds, and consequently the effective radiative forcing. We show that the magnitude of the effective radiative forcing is larger when aerosols are prescribed at higher altitudes and the differences in radiative forcing due to fast adjustment processes can account for a substantial part of the dependence of the amount of cooling on aerosol altitude. These altitude effects would be additional to dependences on aerosol microphysics, transport, and sedimentation, which are outside the scope of this study. The cooling effectiveness of stratospheric sulfate aerosols likely increases with the altitude of the aerosol layer both because aerosols higher in the stratosphere have larger effective radiative forcing and because they have higher stratospheric residence time; these two effects are likely to be of comparable importance.
Evaluating Cloud Feedback Components in Observations and Their Representation in Climate Models

Abstract:Abstract This study quantifies the contribution of individual cloud feedbacks to the total short‐term cloud feedback in satellite observations over the period 2002–2014 and evaluates how they are represented in climate models. The observed positive total cloud feedback is primarily due to positive high‐cloud altitude, extratropical high‐ and low‐cloud optical depth, and land cloud amount feedbacks partially offset by negative tropical marine low‐cloud feedback. Seventeen models from the Atmosphere Model Intercomparison Project of the sixth Coupled Model Intercomparison Project are analyzed. The models generally reproduce the observed moderate positive short‐term cloud feedback. However, compared to satellite estimates, the models are systematically high‐biased in tropical marine low‐cloud and land cloud amount feedbacks and systematically low‐biased in high‐cloud altitude and extratropical high‐ and low‐cloud optical depth feedbacks. Errors in modeled short‐term cloud feedback components identified in this analysis highlight the need for improvements in model simulations of the response of high clouds and tropical marine low clouds. Our results suggest that skill in simulating interannual cloud feedback components may not indicate skill in simulating long‐term cloud feedback components.

Contributions From Cloud Morphological Changes to the Interannual Shortwave Cloud Feedback Based on MODIS and ISCCP Satellite Observations

Abstract:Abstract The surface temperature‐mediated change in cloud properties, referred to as the cloud feedback, continues to dominate the uncertainty in climate projections. A larger number of contemporary global climate models (GCMs) project a higher degree of warming than the previous generation of GCMs. This greater projected warming has been attributed to a less negative cloud feedback in the Southern Ocean. Here, we apply a novel “double decomposition method” that employs the “cloud radiative kernel” and “cloud regime” concepts, to two data sets of satellite observations to decompose the interannual cloud feedback into contributions arising from changes within and shifts between cloud morphologies. Our results show that contributions from the latter to the cloud feedback are large for certain regimes. We then focus on interpreting how both changes within and between cloud morphologies impact the shortwave cloud optical depth feedback over the Southern Ocean in light of additional observations. Results from the former cloud morphological changes reveal the importance of the wind response to warming increases low‐ and mid‐level cloud optical thickness in the same region. Results from the latter cloud morphological changes reveal that a general shift from thick storm‐track clouds to thinner oceanic low‐level clouds contributes to a positive feedback over the Southern Ocean that is offset by shifts from thinner broken clouds to thicker mid‐ and low‐level clouds. Our novel analysis can be applied to evaluate GCMs and potentially diagnose shortcomings pertaining to their physical parameterizations of particular cloud morphologies.

Abstract:How low clouds respond to warming constitutes a key uncertainty for climate projections. Here we observationally constrain low‐cloud feedback through a controlling factor analysis based on ridge regression. We find a moderately positive global low‐cloud feedback (0.45 W m−2 K−1 , 90% range 0.18–0.72 W m−2 K−1 ), about twice the mean value (0.22 W m−2 K−1 ) of 16 models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project. We link this discrepancy to a pervasive model mean‐state bias: models underestimate the low‐cloud response to warming because (a) they systematically underestimate present‐day tropical marine low‐cloud amount, and (b) the low‐cloud sensitivity to warming is proportional to this present‐day low‐cloud amount. Our results hence highlight the importance of reducing model biases in both the mean state of clouds and their sensitivity to environmental factors for accurate climate change projections.

Abstract:Since the release of the first Coupled Model Intercomparison Project version 6 (CMIP6) simulations, one of the most discussed topics is the higher effective climate sensitivity (ECS) of some of the models, resulting in an increased range of ECS values in CMIP6 compared to previous CMIP phases. An important contribution to ECS is the cloud climate feedback. Although climate models have continuously been developed and improved over the last few decades, a realistic representation of clouds remains challenging. Clouds contribute to the large uncertainties in modeled ECS, as projected changes in cloud properties and cloud feedbacks also depend on the simulated present-day fields.

Abstract:Abstract The effective climate sensitivity in the Department of Energy's Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) has decreased from 5.3 K in version 1 to 4.0 K in version 2. This reduction is mainly due to a weaker positive cloud feedback that leads to a stronger negative radiative feedback. Present‐day atmosphere‐only experiments with uniform 4 K sea surface temperature warming are used to separate the contributions of individual model modifications to the reduced cloud feedback. We find that the reduced cloud feedback is mostly driven by changes over the tropical marine low cloud regime, mainly related to a new trigger function for the deep convection scheme and modifications in the cloud microphysics scheme. The new trigger function helps weaken the low cloud reduction by increasing the cloud water detrainment at low levels from deep convection under warming. Changes to the formula of autoconversion rate from liquid to rain and an introduced minimum cloud droplet number concentration threshold in cloud microphysical calculations help sustain clouds against dissipation by suppressing precipitation generation with warming. In the midlatitudes, the increased Wegener‐Bergeron‐Findeisen (WBF) efficiency strongly reduces present‐day liquid water and leads to a stronger negative cloud optical depth feedback. The reduced trade cumulus cloud feedback in v2 is closer to estimates from recent observational and large‐eddy modeling studies but might not be due to the right physical reasons. The reduced mid‐latitude cloud feedback may be more plausible because more realistic present‐day mixed‐phase clouds are produced through the change in the WBF efficiency.

Abstract:Cloud–radiation interactions are key to Earth's climate and its susceptibility to change. While their impact on Earth's energy budget has been studied in great detail, their effect on atmospheric temperatures has received little attention, despite its importance for the planetary circulation of the atmosphere and hence for regional climate and weather. Here, we present the first systematic assessment of vertically resolved cloud-radiative heating within the atmosphere in 20 CMIP6 (phase 6 of the Climate Model Intercomparison Project) models, including a comparison to satellite-based estimates. Our analysis highlights model differences in cloud-radiative heating in both the lower and upper troposphere as well as uncertainties related to cloud ice processes. It also illustrates limitations of our ability to observe cloud-radiative heating. Not surprisingly, the response of cloud-radiative heating to surface warming is also uncertain across models. Yet, in the upper troposphere, the response is very well predicted by an upward shift of the present-day heating, which we show results from the fact that cloud-radiative heating in the upper troposphere is a function of air temperature and thus decoupled from surface temperature. Our results have three important implications for upper-tropospheric cloud-radiative heating: they establish a new null hypothesis for its response to warming, offer a physics-based prediction of its response to warming based on present-day observations, and emphasize the need for improving its representation in simulations of the present-day climate, possibly by combining the benefits of upcoming km-scale models and satellite observations.

Response and Feedback of Cloud Diurnal Cycle to Rising Temperatures

Abstract: By reflecting solar radiation and reducing longwave emissions, clouds regulate the earth's radiation budget, impacting atmospheric circulation and cloud dynamics. Given the diurnal fluctuation of shortwave and longwave radiation, a shift in the cloud cycle phase (CCP) may lead to substantial feedbacks to the climate system. While most efforts have focused on the overall cloud feedback, the response of CCP to climate change has received much less attention. Here we analyze the variations of CCP using both long-term global satellite records and general circulation models (GCM) simulations to evaluate their impacts on the earth's energy budget. Satellite records show that in warm periods the CCP shifts earlier in the morning over the oceans and later in the afternoon over the land. Although less marked and with large inter-model spread, similar shifting patterns also occur in GCMs over the oceans with non-negligible CCP feedbacks. Over the land, where the GCM results are not conclusive, our findings are supported by atmospheric boundary layer models. A simplified radiative model further suggests that such shifts may in turn cause reduced reflection of solar radiation, thus inducing a positive feedback on climate. The crucial role of the cloud cycle calls for increased attention to the temporal evolution of the cloud diurnal cycle in climate models.

Abstract:Abstract Cloud feedback is the largest source of uncertainty in climate sensitivity. This feedback is generally discussed in terms of radiative flux at the top of the atmosphere, but the vertical distribution of the contribution of cloud changes to the top‐of‐atmosphere cloud feedback should be discussed to understand the feedback in greater detail. We have developed a simple analysis method called “vertical profile analysis of cloud feedback,” which simply uses radiative flux data from each level of the model. The analysis is applied for typical cloud regimes and the results are discussed together with cloud fraction change profiles. The advantages and disadvantages of the vertical profile analysis, compared with the commonly used International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP) histogram kernel method, are discussed. Our analysis has the advantage of resolving the detailed vertical profiles of the contribution to the top‐of‐atmosphere cloud feedback from the changes in cloud regimes associated with warming, such as reduced cloud cover and upward shifts of the cloud layer in subtropical low‐cloud regions as well as the increased height of the melting layer in tropical deep convection. The main disadvantage is that the vertical profile analysis cannot represent the feedback components sorted by cloud optical thickness as in the ISCCP histogram kernel method.

Radiative Heating of High‐Level Clouds and Its Impacts on Climate

Abstract:Abstract The interactions of clouds with radiation influence climate. Many of these impacts appear to be related to the radiative heating and cooling from high‐level clouds, but few studies have explicitly tested this. Here, we use simulations with the ICON‐ESM model to understand how high‐level clouds, through their radiative heating and cooling, influence the large‐scale atmospheric circulation and precipitation in the present‐day climate. We introduce a new method to diagnose the radiative heating of high‐level clouds: instead of defining high‐level clouds as all clouds at temperatures colder than −35°C, we define them as all clouds with a cloud top at temperatures colder than −35°C. The inclusion of the lower cloud parts at temperatures warmer than −35°C circumvents the creation of artificial cloud boundaries and strong artificial radiative heating at the temperature threshold. To isolate the impact of high‐level clouds, we analyze simulations with active cloud‐radiative heating, with the radiative heating from high‐level clouds set to zero, and with the radiative heating from all clouds set to zero. We show that the radiative interactions of high‐level clouds warm the troposphere and strengthen the eddy‐driven jet streams, but have no impact on the Hadley circulation strength and the latitude of the Intertropical Convergence Zone. Consistent with their positive radiative heating and energetic arguments, high‐level clouds reduce precipitation throughout the tropics and lower midlatitudes. Overall, our results confirm that the radiative interactions of high‐level clouds have important impacts on climate and highlight the need for better representing their radiative interactions in models.

Hidden Large Aerosol-Driven Cloud Cover Effect over High-Latitude Ocean

Abstract:Understanding how aerosols affect cloud cover is critical for reducing the large uncertainty of the aerosol-cloud interaction (ACI). The 2014 Holuhraun effusive eruption in Iceland resulted in a significant increase in cloud drop number concentration (N-d) relative to the climatological N-d observed during periods of relatively infrequent volcanic activity. Previous studies show a significant "Twomey" effect during this eruption; however, aerosol-induced changes in cloud fraction (Cf) appeared negligible. This leads to the question of why changes in aerosols do not cause Cf changes. To address this question, prediction models were derived to predict Cf based on N-d and meteorological parameters. These validated models allow us to investigate aerosol perturbations on Cf in various N-d scenarios by controlled meteorological conditions. Here our analysis unveiled that the increase in N-d was primarily observed under polluted conditions where N-d surpassing the threshold of 60 cm(-3). After this point, cloud cover stops increasing even as N-d increases. On the contrary, the cloud cover did increase by 9.0% under conditions of clean backgrounds (N-d < 60 cm(-3)). Accordingly, the aerosol-driven cloud adjustment is hidden behind the seemingly insignificant cloud cover effect in areas with large background N-d. These findings provide insights into the importance of considering background N-d and the saturation status of cloud covers in ACI studies.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with how the diabatically-forced overturning circulations of the atmosphere, established by the deep convection within the tropical trough zone (TTZ), first introduced by Riehl and (Malkus) Simpson, in Contr Atmos Phys 52:287–305 (1979), fundamentally shape the distributions of tropical and subtropical cloudiness and the changes to cloudiness as Earth warms. The study first draws on an analysis of a range of observations to understand the connections between the energetics of the TTZ, convection and clouds. These observations reveal a tight coupling of the two main components of the diabatic heating, the cloud component of radiative heating, shaped mostly by high clouds formed by deep convection, and the latent heating associated with the precipitation. Interannual variability of the TTZ reveals a marked variation that connects the depth of the tropical troposphere, the depth of convection, the thickness of high clouds and the TOA radiative imbalance. The study examines connections between this convective zone and cloud changes further afield in the context of CMIP6 model experiments of climate warming. The warming realized in the CMIP6 SSP5-8.5 scenario multi-model experiments, for example, produces an enhanced Hadley circulation with increased heating in the zone of tropical deep convection and increased radiative cooling and subsidence in the subtropical regions. This impacts low cloud changes and in turn the model warming response through low cloud feedbacks. The pattern of warming produced by models, also influenced by convection in the tropical region, has a profound influence on the projected global warming.

Abstract:Supercooled liquid clouds are common at higher latitudes (especially over the Southern Ocean) and are critical for constraining climate projections. We take advantage of the Macquarie Island Cloud and Radiation Experiment (MICRE) to perform an analysis of observed and simulated cloud processes over the Southern Ocean in a region and season dominated by supercooled liquid clouds. Using a single-column version of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Integrated Forecast System (IFS), we compare two different cloud microphysical schemes to ground-based observations of cloud, precipitation, and radiation over a 2.5-month period (1 January–17 March 2017). Both schemes are able to reproduce aspects of the cloud and radiation observations during MICRE to within the uncertainty of the data when the thermodynamic profile is prescribed with relaxation. There are differences in water mass and representation of reflectivity between the schemes. A sensitivity study of the cloud microphysics schemes, one a bulk one-moment scheme and the other a two-moment scheme with prediction of mass and number, indicates that several key processes create differences between the schemes. Surface radiative fluxes and total water path are highly sensitive to the formation and fall speed of precipitation. The prediction of hydrometeor number with the two-moment scheme yields a better comparison with observed reflectivity and radiative fluxes, despite predicting higher liquid water contents than observed. With the two-moment scheme, we are also able to test the sensitivity of the results to the input of liquid cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and ice nuclei (IN). The cloud properties and resulting radiative effects are found to be sensitive to the CCN and IN concentrations. More CCN and IN increase liquid and ice water paths, respectively. Thus, both the dynamic environment and aerosols, integrated through the cloud microphysics, are important for properly representing Southern Ocean cloud radiative effects.

Abstract:Abstract Tropical high cloud cover decreases with surface warming in most general circulation models. This reduction, according to the “stability‐iris” hypothesis, is thermodynamically controlled and linked to a decrease in the radiatively‐driven clear‐sky convergence, when the peak anvil clouds rise because of the rising isotherms. The influence of the large‐scale dynamical changes on the tropical high cloud fraction remains difficult to disentangle from the local thermodynamic influence, given that the mean meridional circulation remains inextricably tied to the local thermodynamic structure of the atmosphere. However, using idealized general circulation model simulations, we propose a novel method to segregate the dynamical impact from the thermodynamic impact on the tropical high cloud fraction. To this end, our investigation primarily focuses on the mechanisms underpinning changes in the high cloud cover in the deep tropics in response to extratropical surface warming, when the tropical sea surface temperatures remain invariant. Net convective detrainment of ice cloud condensates decreases at the peak detrainment region, without a rise in its altitude. We also find that the importance of depositional growth of ice cloud condensates in controlling the high cloud fraction response in the deep tropics varies with altitude.

Abstract:The sensitivity of climate models to increasing CO2 concentration and the climate response at decadal time-scales are still major factors of uncertainty for the assessment of the long and short term effects of anthropogenic climate change. While the relative slow progress on these issues is partly due to the inherent inaccuracies of numerical climate models, this also hints at the need for stronger theoretical foundations to the problem of studying climate sensitivity and performing climate change predictions with numerical models. Here we demonstrate that it is possible to use Ruelle’s response theory to predict the impact of an arbitrary CO2 forcing scenario on the global surface temperature of a general circulation model. Response theory puts the concept of climate sensitivity on firm theoretical grounds, and addresses rigorously the problem of predictability at different time-scales. Conceptually, these results show that performing climate change experiments with general circulation models is a well defined problem from a physical and mathematical point of view. Practically, these results show that considering one single CO2 forcing scenario is enough to construct operators able to predict the response of climatic observables to any other CO2 forcing scenario, without the need to perform additional numerical simulations. We also introduce a general relationship between climate sensitivity and climate response at different time scales, thus providing an explicit definition of the inertia of the system at different time scales. This technique allows also for studying systematically, for a large variety of forcing scenarios, the time horizon at which the climate change signal (in an ensemble sense) becomes statistically significant. While what we report here refers to the linear response, the general theory allows for treating nonlinear effects as well. These results pave the way for redesigning and interpreting climate change experiments from a radically new perspective.

Abstract:This study documents clouds simulated by the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) version 2 (E3SMv2) and attempts to understand what causes the model behavior change in clouds relative to E3SMv1. This is done by analyzing the last 30-year (1985–2014) data from the 165-year historical simulations using E3SMv1 and v2 and four sensitivity tests to isolate the impact of changes in model parameter choices in its turbulence, shallow convection, and cloud macrophysics parameterization (Cloud Layers Unified By Binormals, CLUBB); microphysical parameterization (MG2); and deep-convection scheme (ZM), as well as model physics changes in convective triggering. It is shown that E3SMv2 significantly improves the simulation of subtropical coastal stratocumulus clouds and clouds with optical depth larger than 3.6 over the stratocumulus-to-cumulus transition regimes, where the shortwave cloud radiative effect (SWCRE) is also improved, and the Southern Ocean (SO) while seeing an overall slight degradation in low clouds over other tropical and subtropical oceans. The better performance in E3SMv1 over those regions is partially due to error compensation between its simulated optically thin and intermediate low clouds for which E3SMv2 actually improves simulation of optically intermediate low clouds. Sensitivity tests indicate that the changes in low clouds are primarily due to the tuning done in CLUBB. The impact of the ZM tuning is mainly on optically intermediate and thick high clouds, contributing to an improved SWCRE and longwave cloud radiative effect (LWCRE). The impact of the MG2 tuning and the new convective trigger is primarily on the high latitudes and the SO. They have a relatively smaller impact on clouds than CLUBB tuning and ZM tuning do. This study offers additional insights into clouds simulated in E3SMv2 by utilizing multiple data sets and the Cloud Feedback Model Intercomparison Project (CFMIP) Observation Simulator Package (COSP) diagnostic tool as well as sensitivity tests. The improved understanding will benefit future E3SM developments.

Abstract:High clouds play an important role in climate variations by shading the sun and contributing to the greenhouse effect. It has been suggested that these variations are strongly controlled by atmospheric circulations; however, the relationship between high clouds and circulations in global simulations has been confirmed only for a limited number of general circulation models (GCMs). Increasing our understanding of this relationship requires a more complete dataset of state-of-the-art GCMs. This study quantifies the relationship between high clouds and circulations by spatial and temporal correlation using data from 28 atmospheric GCMs along with a global nonhydrostatic model, a new-type of GCM, and reveals a robust and strong relationship in most models. This study also finds that the sensitivity, which is defined as the slope of the relationship between high clouds and mass fluxes of circulations, is highly model-dependent. This suggests that a similar change of circulations does not guarantee that of high clouds, which could be one reason for the complexity in projecting high-cloud changes due to warming. Moreover, this study confirms in both observation and models that the relationship with circulations is stronger for medium-thickness and thick high clouds than for thin clouds. Furthermore, the relationship between high clouds and circulations is more convincing in near-equatorial regions between 15°S–15°N, the ascending branch of the Hadley circulation, where deep convection is especially active.

Abstract:Cloud processes are the largest source of uncertainty in quantifying the global temperature response to carbon dioxide rise. Still, the role of precipitation efficiency (PE) -- surface rain per unit column -- integrated condensation -- is yet to be quantified. Here we use 36 limited-domain cloud resolving simulations from the Radiative-Convective Equilibrium Model Intercomparison Project to show that they strongly imply climate warming will result in increases to net precipitation efficiency. We then analyze 35 General Circulation Models (GCMs) from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 and find that increasing PE enhances tropical circulation slowdown and strengthens eastern equatorial Pacific warming. These changes trigger pan-tropical positive cloud feedback by causing stratiform anvil cloud reduction and stratocumulus suppression, and thereby amplify overall climate sensitivity. Quantitatively, we find that in the 24 of 35 GCMs which match the cloud-resolving models in simulating increasing PE with greenhouse warming, mean Effective Climate Sensitivity is 1 K higher than in GCMs in which PE decreases. The models simulating increasing PE also comprise all estimates of effective climate sensitivity over 4 K. Taken together, these results show that further constraining PE sensitivity to warming will reduce uncertainty over future climate change.

Abstract:A microscope-based laser scanning cytometer (LSCM) has been developed that automatically measures multiple wavelength fluorescence and light scattering of cells on a microscope slide and generates lists of cytochemical and morphological features for each of thousands of cells in a typical sample. For a sample stained with a DNA stain, among the features generated are the value (DNA content), peak (chromatin condensation), and area (nuclear size), as well as the location of the cell on the slide. When combined with each other, these features give detailed resolution of the mammalian cell cycle, including the separation of mitotic from interphase cells. This is demonstrated under a variety of conditions, including cells that were fixed while in suspension and then adhered to a microscope slide, cytocentrifuge preparations, adherent cells fixed in situ on a microscope slide, on viable adherent cells, and on pathological tissue material. Galleries are shown of images of cells that were identified by the instrument as belonging to specific stages of the cell cycle, based on their biochemical staining, and were automatically relocated for viewing. The images are either epifluorescence images of the cells stained with the DNA fluorochrome or brightfield images of cells from slides that were restained with chromatic dyes.
