Abstract:The existence of the complex compression and expansion waves in an isolator induces a special motion path of the shock train. Numerical simulations with two different inlet models are conducted. The results indicate that the local parameters govern the shock train's motion, and the pressure gradient along the surface plays an extremely important role. The shock train's location is determined by the entrance condition and backpressure, whereas it is the parameter along the surface that determines its path. The start and end positions of the rapid forward motion are located where the pressure gradient approaches zero. Streamwise parameters and the surface pressure gradient are introduced in Waltrup and Billig's (Structure of ShockWaves in Cylindrical Ducts, AIAA Journal, Vol.11, No.10, 1973, pp.1404-1408) empirical correlation to characterize the rapid forward motion. Then, a mathematical model is established based on Billig's correlation and surface pressure datasets in the current paper.

Abstract:Mathematical modeling of two-component media with a saturated liquid began over 90 years with studies of the consolidation of soils. Two-component must be taken into account when solving a significant number of applied problems arising in various areas of human activity (soils, foams, various cement mortars, sand, porous ceramics, porous sintered composite materials, etc.). Two-component media are widely used in the national economy. For example, in the construction of new airfields and the restoration of destroyed, where the building materials used contain a significant number of voids. The study of wave processes is also very important for the development of new diagnostic methods, new technologies for creating two-component environments that could be applied in the field of engineering, construction, instrumentation, metallurgy, nuclear power and the defense capability of the country. However, the complexity of describing the effects of the interaction of components, heat transfer, and other related processes has led to the fact that until now the generally accepted models (elastic medium-liquid) for a fluid-saturated two-component medium have not been fully developed. Therefore, it is of interest to develop a mathematical two-component model when one of the components represents an inhomogeneous viscoelastic medium and the other is a compressible fluid. The presence and degree of porosity in materials is accounted for by a porosity coefficient equal to the ratio of the pore volume to the total volume occupied by the medium.

Abstract:This paper develops the basic sets of equations which lead to the conservation laws describing collisionless plasma shock waves. We discuss the evolution of shock waves by wave steepening, derive the Rankine-Hugoniot conditions for magnetogasdynamic shocks, discuss various analytical models of shock formation, and discuss the basic instabilities which may become important in collisionless shock physics. We then present a survey of the theory of anomalous resistivity in the quasilinear limit and beyond and discuss mechanisms of shock particle reflection as far as they have been investigated in the published literature. The content of the chapter is the following: 1. Wave steepening, describing simple waves and steepening due to nonlinearity, balnced by dissipation in Burgers' shocks, by dispersive effects in the Korteweg-de Vries equation, the Sagdeev-Potential method, 2. Basic equations, presenting kinetic theory and the transition to moment equations in the fluid description, 3. Rankine-Hugoniot relations, giving the jump conditions across shocks, explicit MHD solution for perpendicular shocks and parallel shocks, and high Mach number conditions, 4. Waves and instabilities, giving the general dispersion relation, describing low-$\beta$-shocks, whistler and Alfvén shocks, the various shock-relevant instabilities, 5. Anomalous transport for the various electrostatic wave-particle interactions, general description of anomalous resistivity, shock particle reflection from potential and specularly, hole formation, 6. Briefing on numerical simulation techniques, giving a short idea on this important field and its methods.

Abstract:The propagation of shock waves in different geometries is crucial in engineering and scientific applications. A comprehensive model is developed to elucidate the hydrodynamic growth and decay of shock waves in cylindrical and spherical geometries by using the strong shock wave assumption. This model takes into consideration the conservation equations governing mass, momentum, and energy, thereby allowing for an accurate description of the coupled behavior between the piston and shock wave propagation. In contrast to the localized analysis employed in previous self-similar methods, this model incorporates the finite sound wave velocity to introduce the concept of retarded pressure on the piston surface. Consequently, the proposed model offers a multitude of advantages by providing a complete set of dynamic information concerning the trajectories, velocities, and accelerations of both the piston and shock wave. Furthermore, an asymptotic analytical solution is derived to describe the decay of shock waves in cylindrical and spherical geometries. To validate the theoretical analysis and illustrate the propagation characteristics of shock waves in these specific geometries, thorough comparisons are conducted. These findings contribute to the advancement of our understanding of shock wave dynamics in various physical systems, particularly in the field of plasma physics.

Abstract:Relativistic blast waves can be described by a mechanical model. In this model, the "blast" -- the compressed gas between the forward and reverse shocks -- is viewed as one hot body. Equations governing its dynamics are derived from conservation of mass, energy, and momentum. Simple analytical solutions are obtained in the two limiting cases of ultra-relativistic and non-relativistic reverse shock. Equations are derived for the general explosion problem.

Abstract:By using the Hugoniot curve in detonics as a Riemann invariant of a velocity-pressure model, we get a conservative hyperbolic system similar to the Euler equations. The only differences are the larger value of the adiabatic constant (= 8.678 instead of 1.4 for gas dynamics) and the mass density replaced by a strain density depending on the pressure. The model is not homogeneous since it involves a gravity and a friction term. After the seismic wave reaches up the bottom of the ocean, one gets a pressure wave propagating toward the surface, which is made of a frontal shock wave followed by a regular decreasing profile. Since this regular profile propagates faster than the frontal shock waves, the amplitude of the pressure wave is strongly reduced when reaching the surface. Only in the case of a strong earth tremor the residual pressure wave is still sufficient to generate a water elevation with a sufficient wavelengths enable to propagate as a SaintVenant water wave and to become a tsunami when reaching the shore. We describe the construction of the model and the computation of the wave profile and discuss about the formation or not of a wave.

Acoustic emission due to the interaction between shock and instability waves in 2D supersonic jet flows

Abstract:An analytical model is developed to study the sound produced by the interaction between shock and instability waves in two-dimensional supersonic jet flows. The jet is considered to be of vortex-sheet type and 2D Euler equations are linearised to determine the governing equations for shock, instability waves, and their interaction. Pack's model is used to describe shock waves, while instability waves are calculated using spatial stability analysis. The interaction between shock and instability waves can be solved analytically by performing Fourier transform and subsequently using the method of steepest descent. Sound produced by the interaction between the instability wave and a single shock cell is studied first, after which that due to a number of cells follows. We find that the model developed in this study can correctly predict the frequencies of the fundamental screech tone and its first and second harmonics. We show that the predicted sound directivity, even from a single shock cell, is in good agreement with experimental data. In particular, this model shows the strongest noise emission close to the upstream direction but the emitted noise starts to rapidly decay as the observer angle approaches 180 degrees, which is in accordance with experimental results; this suggests that the effective noise from a single shock cell is far from of the monopole type as assumed in the classical Powell's model. We find that the noise directivity is very sensitive to the local growth rate of the instability waves and the noise is generated primarily through the Mach wave mechanism.

Abstract:We present a computational analysis of a 2×2 hyperbolic system of balance laws whose solutions exhibit complex nonlinear behavior. Traveling-wave solutions of the system are shown to undergo a series of bifurcations as a parameter in the model is varied. Linear and nonlinear stability properties of the traveling waves are computed numerically using accurate shock-fitting methods. The model may be considered as a minimal hyperbolic system with chaotic solutions and can also serve as a stringent numerical test problem for systems of hyperbolic balance laws.

Abstract:This paper presents a variational method for mathematical modeling of seismic wave kinematics developed by the Seismometry and Geoacoustics Chair at the Department of Geology, Moscow State University, for studying the kinematics of seismic waves of different types in 2D isotropic (gradient and layered) media. The problem of determining the paths of seismic rays was solved by integrating a system of differential equations with given initial conditions using the Runge–Kutta method. An algorithm to verify the accuracy and correctness of the solutions was studied and tested on a number of theoretical models of inhomogeneous media. The thus-developed ray tracing method was used to study the effect of the velocity gradient and of the geometry of seismic boundaries on the kinematics of reflected waves in multilayer media. Based on the results of mathematical modeling of the kinematics of reflected waves, conclusions were drawn about the limits of applicability of simplified models of horizontally layered media, which often approximate complex inhomogeneous media.

Abstract:This note is devoted to the rigorous theory of nonlinear geometric optics for multiple shocks to a general N x N conservation law in one space variable. For the problem of multiple weak shocks perturbed by small amplitude, high frequency oscillatory waves, we obtain that the leading profiles of oscillatory shocks are solutions to an integro-differential system with free boundaries, the leading terms of shock fronts don't oscillate, and oscillations only appear in the leading terms of shock speeds.

Abstract:The propagation of a three-dimensional shock wave in an elastic solid is studied. The material is assumed to be a simple elastic solid in which the Cauchy stress depends on the deformation gradient only. It is shown that the growth or decay of a discontinuity ψ depends on (i) an unknown quantity φ− behind the shock wave, (ii) the two principal curvatures of the shock surface, (iii) the gradient on the shock surface of the shock wave speeds and (iv) the inhomogeneous term which depends on the motion ahead of the shock surface and vanishes when the motion ahead of the shock surface is uniform. If a proper choice is made of the propagation vectorb along which the growth or decay of the discontinuity is measured, the dependence on item (iii) can be avoided. However,b assumes different directions depending on the choice of discontinuity ψ with which one is concerned and the unknown quantity φ− behind the shock wave on which one chooses to depend. As in the case of one-dimensional shock waves, the growth (or decay) of one discontinuity may not be accompanied by the growth (or decay) of other discontinuities. A universal equation relating the growth or decay of discontinuities in the normal stress, normal velocity and specific volume is also presented.

Abstract:We suggest a method for calculation of parameters of dispersive shock waves in framework of Whitham modulation theory applied to non-integrable wave equations with a wide class of initial conditions corresponding to propagation of a pulse into a medium at rest. The method is based on universal applicability of Whitham's `number of waves conservation law' as well as on the conjecture of applicability of its soliton counterpart to the above mentioned class of initial conditions which is substantiated by comparison with similar situations in the case of completely integrable wave equations. This allows one to calculate the limiting characteristic velocities of the Whitham modulation equations at the boundary with the smooth part of the pulse whose evolution obeys the dispersionless approximation equations. We show that explicit analytic expressions can be obtained for laws of motion of the edges. The validity of the method is confirmed by its application to similar situations described by the integrable Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) and nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations and by comparison with the results of numerical simulations for the generalized KdV and NLS equations.

Abstract:In the present work motivated by generalized forms of the Hertzian dynamics associated with granular crystals, we consider the possibility of such models to give rise to both shock and rarefaction waves. Depending on the value $p$ of the nonlinearity exponent, we find that both of these possibilities are realizable. We use a quasi-continuum approximation of a generalized inviscid Burgers model in order to predict the solution profile up to times near the shock formation, as well as to estimate when it will occur. Beyond that time threshold, oscillations associated with the discrete nature of the underlying model emerge that cannot be captured by the quasi-continuum approximation. Our analytical characterization of the above features is complemented by systematic numerical computations.

Abstract:Linear stability of a plane shock waves in ultrarelativistic anisotropic hydrodynamics is investigated. The properties of the amplitudes of perturbations of physical quantities are studied depending on the components of the wave vector of a small harmonic perturbation. Analytical calculationsfor the longitudinal and transverse propagation of shock wave normal with respect to the anisotropy axis (beam-axis) and numerical calculations for an arbitrary polar angle are carried out.

Abstract:The nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation and the Whitham modulation equations both describe slowly varying, locally periodic nonlinear wavetrains, albeit in differing amplitude-frequency domains. In this paper, we take advantage of the overlapping asymptotic regime that applies to both the NLS and Whitham modulation descriptions in order to develop a universal analytical description of dispersive shock waves (DSWs) generated in Riemann problems for a broad class of integrable and non-integrable nonlinear dispersive equations. The proposed method extends DSW fitting theory that prescribes the motion of a DSW's edges into the DSW's interior, i.e., this work reveals the DSW structure. Our approach also provides a natural framework in which to analyze DSW stability. We consider several representative, physically relevant examples that illustrate the efficacy of the developed general theory. Comparisons with direct numerical simulations show that inclusion of higher order terms in the NLS equation enables a remarkably accurate description of the DSW structure in a broad region that extends from the harmonic, small amplitude edge.

Abstract:For a class of nonconservative hyperbolic systems of partial differential equations endowed with a strictly convex mathematical entropy, we formulate the initial value problem by supplementing the equations with a kinetic relation prescribing the rate of entropy dissipation across shock waves. Our condition can be regarded as a generalization to nonconservative systems of a similar concept introduced by Abeyaratne, Knowles, and Truskinovsky for subsonic phase transitions and by LeFloch for nonclassical undercompressive shocks to nonlinear hyperbolic systems. The proposed kinetic relation for nonconservative systems turns out to be equivalent, for the class of systems under consideration at least, to Dal Maso, LeFloch, and Murat's definition based on a prescribed family of Lipschitz continuous paths. In agreement with previous theories, the kinetic relation should be derived from a phase plane analysis of traveling solutions associated with an augmented version of the nonconservative system. We illustrate with several examples that nonconservative systems arising in the applications fit in our framework, and for a typical model of turbulent fluid dynamics, we provide a detailed analysis of the existence and properties of traveling waves which yields the corresponding kinetic function.

Abstract:The article studies the applicability of the Baer–Nunziato two-fluid model to the problem of interaction of a shock wave with a foam layer. The determining system of equations is formulated. A computational algorithm based on the Harten–Lax–Van Leer scheme with contact discontinuity resolution, including phase velocity and pressure relaxation stages, is proposed and described in detail. Using the proposed computational technology, the problem of propagation of a weak perturbation in a two-phase medium is considered. The propagation velocity obtained is close to the estimate using Wood formula. The problem of the interaction of a shock wave with a foam layer near an impenetrable wall is also considered. The formulation corresponds to full-scale experiments. The nonstationary wave dynamics realized in this problem using the proposed model is described. Good qualitative and quantitative agreement is obtained between the calculation results and experimental data.

Wavepacket Modelling of Broadband Shock-Associated Noise in Supersonic Jets

Abstract:We present a two-point model to investigate the underlying source mechanisms for broadband shock-associated noise (BBSAN) in shock-containing supersonic jets. In the model presented, the generation of BBSAN is assumed to arise from the non-linear interaction between downstream-propagating coherent structures with the quasi-periodic shock cells in the jet plume. The turbulent perturbations are represented as axially-extended wavepackets and the shock cells are modelled as a set of stationary waveguide modes. Unlike previous BBSAN models, the physical parameters describing the hydrodynamic components are not scaled using the acoustic field. Instead, the characteristics of both the turbulent and shock components are educed from large-eddy simulation and particle image velocimetry datasets. Apart from using extracted data, a reduced-order description of the wavepacket structure is obtained using parabolised stability equations (PSE). The validity of the model is tested by comparing far-field sound pressure level predictions to azimuthally-decomposed experimental acoustic data from a cold Mach 1.5 underexpanded jet. At polar angles and frequencies where BBSAN dominates, good agreement in spectral shape and sound amplitude is observed for the first three azimuthal modes. Encouraging comparisons of the radiated noise spectra, in both frequency and amplitude, reinforce the suitability of using reduced-order linear wavepacket sources for predicting BBSAN peaks. On the other hand, the mismatch in sound amplitude at interpeak frequencies reveals the role of wavepacket jitter in the underlying sound generating mechanism.
