Abstract:By employing x-Bohm theory and p-Bohm theory, we construct the position and momentum trajectories of single-mode and superposed-mode Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beams. The dependence of divergence velocity and rotation velocity on the initial position and propagation distance is quantified, indicating that LG beams exhibit subluminal effects, even in free space. Additionally, we clarify the formation of the petal-shaped intensity distribution of the superposed-mode LG beam in terms of motion trajectory, where the particle-like trajectory and wave-like interference are ``simultaneously" observed. Our work provides an intuitive way to visualize the propagation characteristics of LG beams and deepen the comprehension of Bohm-like theory.

Abstract:Based on the extended Huygens–Fresnel diffraction integral, the expressions for the average intensity and the effective size of Laguerre–Gaussian and Bessel–Gaussian Schell-model beams propagating through a paraxial ABCD optical system are obtained in the turbulent atmosphere. The influences of the source coherence and atmospheric turbulence on the propagation of Laguerre–Gaussian and Bessel–Gaussian Schell-model beams in the turbulent atmosphere are investigated in detail. It is found that the beam profile will eventually evolve into a Gaussian-like distribution through turbulence in contrast to ring-shaped far-field pattern in free space. The effective size of Laguerre–Gaussian and Bessel–Gaussian Schell-model beams with lower source coherence is less affected by turbulence. The parameter β and index n of the sources have some effects on intensity distribution and beam spreading through atmospheric turbulence.

Abstract:The propagation behavior of the multi-Gaussian Schell-model source through ABCD optical systems and its spreading in the turbulent atmosphere are investigated. We obtain the analytic expressions for the cross spectral density and spectral degree of coherence of such beams in misaligned ABCD optical systems and beam width in atmospheric turbulence. Numerical results show that when the beam is focused, it still has the flattened intensity profile around the optical axis. However, the degree of coherence of field in the focal plane assumes Gaussian-like profile. The turbulence inner scale and correlation width and index M of the source have some effects on beam spreading through atmospheric turbulence.

Abstract:A high-order Bessel-Gaussian mode is introduced to describe hollow beams. The results for high-order Bessel-Gaussian beams propagating through lens focusing system and free space are derived in terms of Collins integral formula. The diffraction patterns and profile for high-order Bessel-Gaussian beams propagating through the above-mentioned optical systems are illustrated.

Abstract:We present a general, Gaussian spatial mode propagation formalism for describing the generation of higher order multi-spatial-mode beams generated during nonlinear interactions. Furthermore, to implement the theory, we simulate optical angular momentum transfer interactions, and show how one can optimize the interaction to reduce the undesired modes. Past theoretical treatments of this problem have often been phenomenological, at best. Here we present an exact solution for the single-pass no-cavity regime, in which the the nonlinear interaction is not overly strong. We apply our theory to two experiments, with very good agreement, and give examples of several more configurations, easily tested in the laboratory.

Abstract:In this paper, what we believe to be a novel class of beams, which are referred to as the spherical Gauss-Laguerre beams, are proposed. The beams propagate stably in the anomalous dispersive media, within which the second order derivative with respect to t could be combined with the two-dimensional (2D) Laplacian operator in the transverse direction and forms a three-dimensional (3D) Laplacian operator, which describes the beam propagation in the z direction within the four-dimensional (4D) x-y-z-t space-time. The wave equation is solved by the variable separation method and the analytical expression for the spherical Gauss-Laguerre beams is derived. The beams have a 3D Gaussian field distribution with a variable beam waist with respect to the propagation distance. Unlike any 2D spatial vortex beams, the 3D beams could possess either the spatial vortex or the spatiotemporal optical vortex (STOV) by choosing the vortex plane in the 3D x-y-t space-time. The derived spherical Gauss-Laguerre beam expression in the 4D space-time is verified by the numerical simulations with excellent agreement.
Interactive Dynamics of Two Copropagating Laser Beams in Underdense Plasmas.

Abstract:The interaction of two copropagating laser beams with crossed polarization in the underdense plasmas has been investigated analytically with the variational approach and numerically. The coupled envelope equations of the two beams include both the relativistic mass correction and the ponderomotive force effect. It is found that the relativistic effect always plays the role of beam attraction, while the ponderomotive force can play both the beam attraction and beam repulsion, depending upon the beam diameters and their transverse separation. In certain conditions, the two beam centers oscillate transversely around a propagation axis. In this case, the ponderomotive effect can lead to a higher oscillation frequency than that accounting for the relativistic effect only. The interaction of two beams decreases the threshold power for self-focusing of the single beam. A strong self-trapping beam can channel a weak one.

Abstract:A new mathematical model, described as hollow Gaussian beams (HGBs), is proposed to describe a dark hollow laser beam (DHB). The area of the dark region across the HGBs can easily be controlled by proper choice of the beam parameters. Based on the Collins integral, an analytical propagation formula for the HGBs through a paraxial optical system is derived. The HGBs also can be expressed as a superposition of a series of Lagurerre-Gaussian modes by use of a polynomial expansion. As a numerical example, the propagation properties of a DHB in free space are illustrated graphically. The HGBs provide a convenient and powerful way to describe and treat the propagation of DHBs and can be used conveniently to analyze atoms manipulated with a DHB. (C) 2003 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:In order to study the propagation characteristics of Gaussian Schell-model (GSM) beams in electromagnetically induced transparency atomic vapor, the analytical expression was obtained for the cross-spectral density function of a Gaussian Schell-model beam passing through the electromagnetically induced transparency atomic vapor based on the matrix optics theory, diffraction integral theory and unified theory of coherence and polarization. The formula can be used in the study of the changes in the spectral density and spectral degree of coherence of the beam through the EIT atomic vapor. Numerical examples show that both the spectral density and the spectral degree of coherence of the GSM beam can be modulated by the Rabi frequency of the control light. The results have been provided a new method and technique for modulation the beam propagation. The findings indicate a new technique for controlling the spectral density and the spectral degree of coherence of the partially coherent light beam.
Second Order Moment Propagation of TE Vector Gaussian Beam

Abstract:Based on the nonparaxial vectorial moment theory of light beam propagation, the propagation of TE (transverse electric) vector Gaussian beam has been investigated, and the integral expressions of beam waist, transversal divergence angle and beam propagation factor have been presented. The results reveal that both the transversal beam widths defined as second order moment of energy flux follow a very simple hyperbolic law upon propagation. The numerical calculations show that TE polarization results in different propagating characteristic in the two transversal directions for highly nonparaxial case, and the maximum transverse divergences exceed the divergence angle limit of nonparaxial scalar Gaussian beam 63.43° and are close to 90°, which is in accordant with the theory of wave optics. Moreover, the divergence in the x direction is slightly larger than that in the y direction. Under paraxial condition of nonparaxial scalar Gaussian beam, the propagation of TE vector Gaussian beam is reduced to that of transversal fundamental mode paraxial scalar Gaussian beam for paraxial case. However, the beam propagation factor will always be greater than unity and cannot accurately equal to unity forever.

Abstract:We rigorously prove that when a bounded light beam is incident on an interface, a part of its plane wave components propagate according to the reverse mode of the ordinary reflection and transmission. Based on the two propagation modes, we propose the definition of the generalized reflection and transmission. With this definition, we solve the controversy about the Goos-Hanchen shift approaching the grazing incidence limit, and release the angular expansion method from the precondition which requires that the beam spread angle should not exceed the complement of the incident angle. Then the spectrum superposition effect is investigated for the incidence circumstance whose beam spread angle exceeds the complement of the incident angle.

Abstract:On the basis of angular spectrum representation, the reversed propagation dynamics of a Laguerre-Gaussian beam in left-handed materials (LHMs) is presented. We show that the negative phase velocity gives rise to a reversed screw of the wave front, and ultimately leads to a reversed rotation of the optical vortex. Furthermore, the negative Gouy-phase shift causes an inverse spiral of the Poynting vector. It is found that the Laguerre-Gaussian beam in LHMs will present the same propagation characteristics as the counterpart with opposite topological charges in regular right-handed materials (RHMs). The momentum conservation theorem ensures that the tangential component of the wave momentum at the RHM-LHM boundary is conserved. It is shown that although the linear momentum reverses its direction, the angular momentum remains unchanged.

Abstract:From the ultrashort pulsed Gaussian beams, based on the properties of Laguerre polynomial, a family of solutions are found in theory, which represents a new family of ultrashort pulsed beams called ultrashort pulsed elegant Laguerre-Gaussian beams. These pulsed beams with arbitrary available frequency all have a nearly elegant Laguerre-Gaussian profile, an arbitrary temporal shape, and an equal diffractive distance. These solutions can be even used to describe the ultrashort pulsed beam whose pulse duration is shorter than one optical oscillation period. The ultrashort pulsed elegant Laguerre-Gaussian beams and their propagation properties in free space have been studied, such as intensity on the axis, transversal distribution of intensity, diffractive property, pulse polarity reversal, pulse time delay etc. The time and spatial singularity of the pulsed beams is also discussed when the slowly varying envelope approximation is introduced.

Abstract:Based on the nonparaxial moment theory of light beam propagation, the propagation characteristics of nonparaxial scalar Gaussian beam, nonparaxial TEM and TE vector Gaussian beams have been investigated. The results reveal that both the transversal beam widths follow a simple hyperbolic law upon propagation. The analytical expressions of the beam propagation factor, beam waist and far field divergence angle are presented, respectively. Furthermore, the formulae can be very concise for highly nonparaxial cases. TE or TM polarization will result in different propagating features in the two transversal directions. The maximum transverse divergence angles of nonparaxial scalar and vector Gaussain beams are different, which indicates that nonparaxial scalar Gaussian beam is no longer approximate at subwavelength scales. When extending to the paraxial case, the results obtained are slightly different from the formerly paraxial ones. Moreover, in this case the beam propagation factor will always be greater than unity. This research also denotes some properties of subwavelength optics.

Abstract:The dynamics of wave packets in the fractional Schrödinger equation is still an open problem. The difficulty stems from the fact that the fractional Laplacian derivative is essentially a nonlocal operator. We investigate analytically and numerically the propagation of optical beams in the fractional Schrödinger equation with a harmonic potential. We find that the propagation of one- and two-dimensional input chirped Gaussian beams is not harmonic. In one dimension, the beam propagates along a zigzag trajectory in real space, which corresponds to a modulated anharmonic oscillation in momentum space. In two dimensions, the input Gaussian beam evolves into a breathing ring structure in both real and momentum spaces, which forms a filamented funnel-like aperiodic structure. The beams remain localized in propagation, but with increasing distance display an increasingly irregular behavior, unless both the linear chirp and the transverse displacement of the incident beam are zero.

Abstract:We analytically and numerically investigate an anharmonic propagation of two-dimensional beams in a harmonic potential. We pick noncentrosymmetric beams of common interest that carry orbital angular momentum. The examples studied include superposed Bessel-Gauss (BG), Laguerre-Gauss (LG), and circular Airy (CA) beams. For the BG beams, periodic inversion, phase transition, and rotation with periodic angular velocity are demonstrated during propagation. For the LG and CA beams, periodic inversion and variable rotation are still there but not the phase transition. On the whole, the "center of mass" and the orbital angular momentum of a beam exhibit harmonic motion, but the motion of the beam intensity distribution in detail is subject to external and internal torques and forces, causing it to be anharmonic. Our results are applicable to other superpositions of finite circularly asymmetric beams.

Abstract:In this paper, we obtain the analytical solution of the off-waist inputted complex argument Laguerre-Gaussian beams and their mean squared beam width in nonlocal nonlinear media. The propagation of the complex argument Laguerre-Gaussian beams in the nonlocal nonlinear media is investigated in detail. The examples show that the pattern shape of a (n, m) mode complex argument Laguerre-Gaussian beam varies periodically with the period Δz=πzc in strongly nonlocal nonlinear media if n≠0.But if n=0, its pattern shape remains unvaried and the beam width varies periodically during propagation. Under the off-waist incident condition, the propagation of the (0, m) mode complex argument Laguerre-Gaussian beam behaves as a breather during propagation, no matter what the power of the incident beam is. Only when the beam is input at the waist and the input power equals the critical power would the breather be reduced to a soliton. ©2010 Chin.Phys.Soc.
