Abstract:We determine the shape which minimizes, among domains with given measure, the first eigenvalue of the anisotropic laplacian perturbed by an integral of the unknown function. Using also some properties related to the associated \lq\lq twisted\rq\rq problem, we show that, this problem displays a \emph{saturation} phenomenon: the first eigenvalue increases with the weight up to a critical value and then remains constant.

Abstract:We consider the two-dimensional eigenvalue problem for the Laplacian with the Neumann boundary condition involving the critical Hardy potential. We prove the existence of the second eigenfunction and study its asymptotic behavior around the origin. A key tool is the Sobolev type inequality with a logarithmic weight, which is shown in this paper as an application of the weighted nonlinear potential theory.

Abstract:We study a weighted eigenvalue problem with anisotropic diffusion in bounded Lipschitz domains Ω ⊂ R N , N ≥ 1 , under Robin boundary conditions, proving the existence of two positive principal eigenvalues λ ± respectively associated with a positive and a negative eigenfunction. Next, we analyze the minimization of λ ± with respect to the sign-changing weight, showing that the optimal eigenvalues Λ ± are equal if the domain has a center of symmetry and the optimal weights are of bang-bang type, namely piece-wise constant functions, each one taking only two values. As a consequence, the problem is equivalent to the minimization with respect to the subsets of Ω satisfying a volume constraint. Then, we completely solve the optimization problem in one dimension, in the case of homogeneous Dirichlet or Neumann conditions, showing new phenomena induced by the presence of the anisotropic diffusion. The optimization problem for λ + naturally arises in the study of the optimal spatial arrangement of resources for a species to survive in an heterogeneous habitat.

Abstract:We consider the eigenvalue problem for the Laplacian with mixed Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. For a certain class of bounded, simply connected planar domains we prove monotonicity properties of the first eigenfunction. As a consequence, we establish a variant of the hot spots conjecture for mixed boundary conditions. Moreover, we obtain an inequality between the lowest eigenvalue of this mixed problem and the lowest eigenvalue of the corresponding dual problem where the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions are interchanged. The proofs are based on a novel variational principle, which we establish.

Abstract:We consider a Dirichlet problem, which is a perturbation of the eigenvalue problem for the anisotropic p-Laplacian. We assume that the perturbation is (p(z)−1)-sublinear, and we prove an existence and nonexistence theorem for positive solutions as the parameter λ moves on the positive semiaxis. We also show the existence of a smallest positive solution and determine the monotonicity and continuity properties of the minimal solution map.

Abstract:This work considers the Neumann eigenvalue problem for the weighted Laplacian on a Riemannian manifold $(M,g,\partial M)$ under the singular perturbation. This perturbation involves the imposition of vanishing Dirichlet boundary conditions on a small portion of the boundary. We derive a sharp asymptotic of the perturbed eigenvalues, as the Dirichlet part shrinks to a point $x^*\in \partial M$, in terms of the spectral parameters of the unperturbed system. This asymptotic demonstrates the impact of the geometric properties of the manifold at a specific point $x^*$. Furthermore, it becomes evident that the shape of the Dirichlet region holds significance as it impacts the first terms of the asymptotic. A crucial part of this work is the construction of the singularity structure of the restricted Neumann Green's function which may be of independent interest. We employ a fusion of layer potential techniques and pseudo-differential operators during this work.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a first Dirichlet eigenfunction of the weighted $p$-Laplacian on a bounded domain in a complete weighted Riemannian manifold. By constructing gradient estimates for a first eigenfunction, we obtain some relationships between weighted $p$-Laplacian first eigenvalues. As an immediate application, we also obtain some eigenvalue comparison results between the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of the weighted Laplacian, the first clamped plate eigenvalue and the first buckling eigenvalue.

Abstract:We study an {\it indefinite weighted eigenvalue problem} for an operator of {\it mixed-type} (that includes both the classical {\it $p$-Laplacian} and the {\it fractional $p$-Laplacian}) in a bounded open subset $\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^N \,(N\geq2)$ with {\it Lipschitz boundary} $\partial \Omega$, which is given by \begin{align*} -\Delta_p u + (-\Delta_p)^su+V(x)|u|^{p-2}u&=\lambda g(x)|u|^{p-2}u~\text{in}~\Omega, u&=0~\text{in}~\mathbb{R}^N\setminus\Omega, \end{align*} where $\lambda >0$ is a parameter, exponents $0<s<1<p<N$, and $V, g\in L^q(\Omega)$ for $q\in \left(\frac{N}{sp}, \infty\right)$ with $V\geq 0, g > 0$ a.e. in $\Omega$. Using the variational tools together with a {\it weak comparison} and {\it strong maximum principles}, we investigate the existence and uniqueness of {\it principal eigenvalue} and discuss its qualitative properties. Moreover, with the help of {\it Ljusternik-Schnirelman category theory}, it is proved that there exists a {\it nondecreasing sequence of positive eigenvalues} which goes to infinity. Further, we show that {\it the set of all positive eigenvalues is closed}, and {\it eigenfunctions} associated with every {\it positive eigenvalue} are bounded.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider Dirichlet boundary value problem involving the anisotropic $p(x)$-Laplacian, where $p(x)= (p_1(x), ..., p_n(x))$, with $p_i(x)> 1$ in $\overline{\Omega}$. Using the topological degree constructed by Berkovits, we prove, under appropriate assumptions on the data, the existence of weak solutions for the given problem. An important contribution is that we are considering the degenerate and the singular cases in the discussion. Finally, according to the compact embedding for anisotropic Sobolev spaces, we point out that the considered boundaru value problem may be critical in some region of $\Omega$.

Abstract:In this paper, we will show the existence of partially regular solutions to the initial–boundary value problem for Landau–Lifshitz equations with nonpositive anisotropy constants in three or four space dimensions. The partial regularity is proved up to the boundary both for the Dirichlet problem and for the Neumann problem. In addition, for the Neumann case, a generalized stability condition which ensures the partial regularity is given. For equations with positive or negative anisotropy coefficients, we will give two results of existence and uniqueness for the solutions corresponding to ground states.

Abstract:In this paper we consider a quasilinear elliptic and critical problem with Dirichlet boundary conditions in presence of the anisotropic $p$-Laplacian. The critical exponent is the usual $p^{\star}$ such that the embedding $W^{1,p}_{0}(\Omega) \subset L^{p^{\star}}(\Omega)$ is not compact. We prove the existence of a weak positive solution in presence of both a $p$-linear and a $p$-superlinear perturbation. In doing this, we have to perform several precise estimates of the anisotropic Aubin-Talenti functions which can be of interest for further problems. The results we prove are a natural generalization to the anisotropic setting of the classical ones by Brezis-Nirenberg \cite{BN}.

Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is to capture the asymptotic behaviour for solutions to a class of nonlinear elliptic and parabolic equations with the anisotropic weights consisting of two power-type weights of different dimensions near the degenerate or singular point, especially covering the weighted p-Laplace equations and weighted fast diffusion equations. As a consequence, we also establish the local Hölder estimates for their solutions in the presence of single power-type weights.

Abstract:Let $\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^N$, $N\geq 1$, be a bounded connected open set. We consider the weighted eigenvalue problem $-\Delta u =\lambda m u$ in $\Omega$ with $\lambda \in \mathbb{R}$, $m\in L^\infty(\Omega)$ and with homogeneous Dirichlet and Robin boundary conditions. First, we study weak* continuity, convexity and Gâteaux differentiability of the map $m\mapsto1/\lambda_1(m)$, where $\lambda_1(m)$ is the principal eigenvalue. Then, denoting by $\mathcal{G}(m_0)$ the class of rearrangements of a fixed weight $m_0$ and assuming that $m_0$ is positive on a set of positive Lebesgue measure, we investigate the minimization and maximization of $\lambda_1(m)$ over $\mathcal{G}(m_0)$. The minimization problem has been already discussed in some papers; here we prove some known results about the existence and characterization of minimizers of $\lambda_1(m)$. We underline that our approach allows us to treat Dirichlet and Robin boundary conditions together. Instead, to our best knowledge, the maximization problem has been only partially addressed in the literature. It turns out that the maximization of $\lambda_1(m)$ is more intricate than its minimization. In our work we discuss existence, uniqueness and characterization of maximizers both in $ \mathcal{G}(m_0)$ and in its weak* closure $\overline{\mathcal{G}(m_0)}$. In particular, we provide an original full description of the unique maximizer in the case of Dirichlet boundary conditions. In the context of the population dynamics, this kind of problems arise from the question of determining the optimal spatial location of favourable and unfavourable habitats in order to increase the chances of survival or extinction of a population.
