Abstract:Yan et al. find that SARS-CoV-2 with the spike-E484D substitution can infect cells without the ACE2 receptor, relying instead on TMEM106B and heparan sulfate. However, ACE2-independent infection is only observed in cell cultures and does not occur in mice, indicating that this mutation is unlikely to substantially increase disease severity.
