Abstract:The advent of the COVID-19 pandemic has initiated a radical attention shift of society toward the severe consequences it has had over human health, shadowing a symmetrically, if not more, important issue of the rapid intensification in the amount of plastic waste that has been generated over the due course of time. Such a growth in the plastic footprint across the globe has led to a carbon positive environment with an increased amount of greenhouse gases (GHGs) released due to the processing of the waste plastic. We aim to address and provide our perception to this pressing challenge that can be decoded via the advancement of upcycling technologies, utilized and augmented worldwide. With the establishment of such sustainable policies and strategies, the global plastic footprint can be systematically mitigated, accelerating the world into economic circularity and environmental sustainability.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Due to the 'forever' degrading nature of plastic waste, plastic waste management is often complicated. The applications of plastic are ubiquitous and inevitable in many scenarios. Current global waste plastics production is ca. 3.5 MMT per year, and with the current trend, plastic waste production will reach 25,000 MMT by 2040. However, the rapid growth in plastic manufacture and the material's inherent nature resulted in the accumulation of a vast amount of plastic garbage. The current recycling rate is <10 %, while the large volumes of discarded plastic waste cause environmental and ecological problems. Recycling rates for plastic vary widely by region and type of plastic. In some developed countries, the recycling rate for plastics is around 20–30 %, while in many developing nations, it is much lower. These statistics highlight the magnitude of the plastic waste problem and the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to manage plastic waste more effectively and reduce its impact on the environment. This review critically analyses past studies on the essential and efficient techniques for turning plastic trash into treasure. Additionally, an attempt has been made to provide a comprehensive understanding of the plastic upcycling process, the 3Rs policy, and the life-cycle assessment (LCA) of plastic conversion. The review advocates pyrolysis as one of the most promising methods of turning plastic trash into valuable chemicals. In addition, plastic waste management can be severely impacted due to uncontrollable events, such as Covid 19 pandemic. Recycling and chemical upcycling can certainly bring value to the end-of-life plastic. However, the LCA analysis indicated there is still a huge scope for innovation in chemical upcycling area compared to mechanical recycling. The formulation of policies and heightened public participation could play a pivotal role in reducing the environmental repercussions of plastic waste and facilitating a shift towards a more sustainable future.

Abstract:In this Future Challenges article, we discuss strategies that the La Trobe Green Labs team has implemented, leading the change in sustainable lab practices in Australia. By focusing on education, operational changes and continuous monitoring and evaluation, they have successfully implemented simple strategies to reduce, reuse and recycle in laboratory environments. The need for climate action is becoming increasingly urgent, and research labs need to be part of the solution. Scientific labs consume large amounts of energy and water and produce significant waste. Globally, scientific research generates over 5.5 million tons of plastic waste annually, which is ~2% of the world's plastic waste. Recognizing the need for sustainability in research, the La Trobe Green Labs program leads this effort in Australia. Since receiving Australia's first "MyGreenLab" certification in 2021, a dedicated steering committee of volunteers has driven successful green initiatives at La Trobe University. The program ensures proper implementation of sustainable practices, enhanced safety and integration with existing operations. More importantly, these small changes will initiate wide‐scale and long‐term transformations that will improve research into more sustainable options for the future.

Abstract:With sky-rocketing demand and unrestricted global production, plastics have become an inseparable part of daily human life and the circular economy at large. Notwithstanding, it is crucial to consider that they lead to substantial economic losses, disrupt the ecological equilibrium, and cause environmental pollution. In this regard, several strategies have been employed in the past, such as recycling techniques, waste management systems, extended producer responsibility, reduction of incineration, plastic prohibition, and globular thinking. These methods work toward the more sustainable usage of plastics in the future, but so far, none have scaled up to the industries' growing demands. It also reflects the current state of the art of these methods concerning the status of scientific research and gap areas in the recycling pathways. Chemical recycling seems to be one of the most efficient techniques, as it is less time consuming and the least waste is generated, but the requirement of efficient sorting makes it time consuming. While other methods generate waste and are comparatively more time consuming. Thus, each recycling method has its limitations, indicating that much work is needed to tackle the growing problem of plastic pollution. In addition, in the context of the present drawbacks of the methods, this review discusses a concomitant solution to the problem of plastic pollution via sustainable development by offering an alternative to fossil fuel-based plastic materials, i.e., biodegradable plastics.

Abstract:The use of plastics has become deeply ingrained in our society, and there are no indications that its prevalence will decrease in the foreseeable future. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the global plastic waste disposal landscape, examining it through regional perspectives, various management technologies (dumping or landfilling, incineration, and reuse and recycling), and across different sectors including agriculture and food, textile, tourism, and healthcare. Notably, this study compiles the findings on life-cycle carbon footprints associated with various plastic waste management practices as documented in the literature. Employing the bio-circular-green economy model, we advocate for the adoption of streamlined and sustainable approaches to plastic management. Unique management measures are also discussed including the utilization of bioplastics combined with smart and efficient collection processes that facilitate recycling, industrial composting, or anaerobic digestion. Moreover, the integration of advanced recycling methods for conventional plastics with renewable energy, the establishment of plastic tax and credits, and the establishment of extended producer responsibility are reviewed. The success of these initiatives relies on collaboration and support from peers, industries, and consumers, ultimately contributing to informed decision-making and fostering sustainable practices in plastic waste management.

Abstract:Innovation in plastic waste recycling technologies is essential for tackling the environmental challenges of plastic pollution. Traditional plastic waste management strategies, such as landfill disposal and mechanical recycling, are increasingly recognized as insufficient for addressing the problem's complexity and scale. This review highlights advanced methods that transform plastic waste into valuable resources, aligning with circular economy principles. I focus on cutting-edge technologies such as chemical recycling that convert mixed and contaminated plastics back into monomers for new production. Biological approaches utilizing enzymes and microorganisms are studied for their potential to biodegrade resistant plastics like PET. Additionally, mechanical innovations like advanced sorting techniques leveraging AI and compatibilization strategies that enhance the quality of recycled materials are discussed. By analyzing recent developments and practical applications, effective and economically viable solutions are identified. These findings emphasize that ongoing technological advancements, supported by robust policies and stakeholder collaboration, are crucial for reducing plastic waste and advancing toward a sustainable circular economy.

Abstract:Plastics have revolutionized modern life, but have created a global waste crisis driven by our reliance and demand for low-cost, disposable materials. New approaches are vital to address challenges related to plastics waste heterogeneity, along with the property reductions induced by mechanical recycling. Chemical recycling and upcycling of polymers may enable circularity through separation strategies, chemistries that promote closed-loop recycling inherent to macromolecular design, and transformative processes that shift the life-cycle landscape. Polymer upcycling schemes may enable lower-energy pathways and minimal environmental impacts compared with traditional mechanical and chemical recycling. The emergence of industrial adoption of recycling and upcycling approaches is encouraging, solidifying the critical role for these strategies in addressing the fate of plastics and driving advances in next-generation materials design.

Abstract:<p>Plastics are now indispensable in daily lives. However, the pollution from plastics is also increasingly becoming a serious environmental issue. Recent years have seen more sustainable approaches and technologies, commonly known as upcycling, to transform plastics into value-added materials and chemical feedstocks. In this review, the latest research on upcycling is presented, with a greater focus on the use of renewable energy as well as the more selective methods to repurpose synthetic polymers. First, thermal upcycling approaches are briefly introduced, including the redeployment of plastics for construction uses, 3D printing precursors, and lightweight materials. Then, some of the latest novel strategies to deconstruct condensation polymers to monomers for repolymerization or introduce vulnerable linkers to make the plastics more degradable are discussed. Subsequently, the review will explore the breakthroughs in plastics upcycling by heterogeneous and homogeneous photocatalysis, as well as electrocatalysis, which transform plastics into more versatile fine chemicals and materials while simultaneously mitigating global climate change. In addition, some of the biotechnological advances in the discovery and engineering of microbes that can decompose plastics are also presented. Finally, the current challenges and outlook for future plastics upcycling are discussed to stimulate global cooperation in this field.</p>

Abstract:Plastic waste represents one of the largest environmental problems of the modern era and disposable water bottles comprise a substantial portion of that waste in the U.S. Colleges are in a unique position to create systems that foster sustainable behaviors among their constituents. Since 2015, Allegheny College has installed water refill stations, and initiated a free water bottle program and an awareness campaign to reduce single-use bottles on the college’s campus. Two surveys were distributed to the student body between 2018 and 2019 to assess the efficacy of those initiatives and learn about any barriers. Bottled water use has reduced significantly since 2014, with the majority of students stating that they most commonly drink water from refill stations while on campus. Demographic factors like income, sex, or place of origin were not related to the amount of bottled water consumption or type of water preference among students. The primary barrier to students eliminating disposable water bottle use was found to be a lack of water refill stations in dormitories. Research aimed at changing behaviors to benefit the environment should consider the barrier of convenience. This research provides a valuable lesson that can extend beyond college campuses and into public settings.

Abstract:Plastic pollution has been today's most highly visible environmental problem in the world. How to responsibly manage plastic waste to control and eliminate plastic pollution has been a global challenge. We have begun to address these issues and developed some science-based solutions and emerging technologies. However, tackling such an intractable challenge requires systematic solutions except for science-based and technology-based ones. Environmental education, fostering plastic pollution prevention within society's educational system, will provide a powerful and feasible pathway at a low cost. Within this perspective, the value and the way forward of education in solving plastic pollution are primarily discussed. Environmental education, including school-level education for students, sustainable consumption behavior guidance, and pollution prevention education for the public, is the feasible, effective, and permanent resolution of plastic pollution in the future.

Abstract:Plastic pollution has become one of the most pressing environmental issues worldwide since the vast majority of post-consumer plastics are hard to degrade in the environment. The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic had disrupted the previous effort of plastic pollution mitigation to a great extent due to the overflow of plastic-based medical waste. In the post-pandemic era, the remaining challenge is how to motivate global action towards a plastic circular economy. The need for one package of sustainable and systematic plastic upcycling approaches has never been greater to address such a challenge. In this review, we summarized the threat of plastic pollution during COVID-19 to public health and ecosystem. In order to solve the aforementioned challenges, we present a shifting concept, regeneration value from plastic waste, that provides four promising pathways to achieve a sustainable circular economy: 1) Increasing reusability and biodegradability of plastics; 2) Transforming plastic waste into high-value products by chemical approaches; 3) The closed-loop recycling can be promoted by biodegradation; 4) Involving renewable energy into plastic upcycling. Additionally, the joint efforts from different social perspectives are also encouraged to create the necessary economic and environmental impetus for a circular economy.

Abstract:Over the last 60 years, global plastic output has expanded at an exponential rate. Plastic entered the oceans in an estimated 12.7 million tons, with roughly 40% of that ending up in the waste stream. It's estimated that over 5.25 trillion bits of a plastic garbage can be found on land, water, oceans, and air as a result of the rise in single-use consumer plastics. Plastic pollution is a well-known threat to flora, biodiversity, and wildlife, and its possible influence on humans is a hot topic in medical research. Cleaning up our environment is currently not practicable, and cleaning the inland canals after they are polluted with plastic is time consuming, expensive, and must be repeated thousands of times due to the enormity of the problem. The impossibilities of managing and controlling plastic trash have been extensively studied. Producing single-use bioplastics from agro-waste substrates is the only practical answer for reducing plastic production and use while improving waste management to prevent this material from entering our environment at the source. This is a powerful advocacy that should be backed up by cutting-edge technology. If over reliance on petroleum-based polymers is reduced, they will be less harmful to the environment. Several agro-waste substrates, as well as their experimental methodologies for archiving the necessary bioplastics, have been captured and clarified in this research. The effects of petroleum-based polymers on human health and the environment have been discussed. It is hoped that the knowledge gained here will be of tremendous use and will serve as a solid foundation for policymakers to defend the global population's health and the environment.

Abstract:Plastics pollution has become one of the greatest concerns of the 21st century. To date, around 10 billion tons of plastics have been produced almost exclusively from non‐renewable sources, and of these, 70%) is accumulating in landfills or the environment, causing severe impacts to natural ecosystems and human health. Considering how plastics are present in every aspect of our daily lives, it is evident that a transition towards a Circular Economy of plastics is essential to achieve several of the Sustainable Development Goals. In this editorial, we highlight how microbial biotechnology can contribute to this shift, with a special focus on the biological recycling of conventional plastics and the upcycling of plastic‐waste feedstocks into new value‐added products. Although important hurdles will need to be overcome in this endeavour, recent success stories highlight how interdisciplinary approaches can bring us closer to a bio‐based economy for the sustainable management of plastics.

Sustainable Development in the Plastic Industry: A Promising Future or Just a Hoax? Past, Present, and Future Perspectives from a Global Viewpoint

Abstract:The issue of fossil-based plastics presents a paradox, with conflicting solutions proposed. While an idealistic vision promotes biodegradable plastics as the ultimate solution, the reality is that fossil-based plastics dominate production, constituting approximately 99%. Despite the conceptual appeal of biodegradable plastics, their practical implementation remains limited with minimal production. Consequently, the current plastic waste management system faces challenges, with only 25% of total plastic waste being recycled. A significant portion, around 31.2%, is incinerated, and 43.8% ends up in landfills or is improperly disposed of, reflecting a non-sustainable approach. Projections suggest a potential increase in recycling rates to nearly 44% by 2050, but incineration remains alarmingly high at close to 50%. To achieve sustainable growth and create a carbon and toxic-free environment, there is a need for a renewed commitment to accelerate the reuse and recycling of plastic waste. Failure to do so risks perpetuating the condemnation of fossil-based plastics, despite their significant historical contributions to society and the environment.

Abstract:The present world is now facing the challenge of proper management and resource recovery of the enormous amount of plastic waste. Lack of technical skills for managing hazardous waste, insufficient infrastructure development for recycling and recovery, and above all, lack of awareness of the rules and regulations are the key factors behind this massive pile of plastic waste. The severity of plastic pollution exerts an adverse effect on the environment and total ecosystem. In this study, a comprehensive analysis of plastic waste generation, as well as its effect on the human being and ecological system, is discussed in terms of source identification with respect to developed and developing countries. A detailed review of the existing waste to energy and product conversion strategies is presented in this study. Moreover, this study sheds light on sustainable waste management procedures and identifies the key challenges to adopting effective measures to minimise the negative impact of plastic waste.

Abstract:The recalcitrance of modern plastics is a key driver of the accretion of plastics in both waste management streams and the environment. As a result, the management of plastic waste has become a focal point of both research and public policy. The following review summarises the effectiveness of widespread approaches to plastic management, before exploring recent developments in the use of both naturally derived products and plastic-degrading organisms to reduce the burden of plastic wastes, including the potential value of symbiotic relationships between plastic-degrading organisms in the biodegradation of plastics in the environment. To date, plastic management strategies have typically focused on interventions to influence both plastic production and consumer behaviour, improvements in effective waste management systems and increased circularity of materials, and changes to the product design to increase the lifespan of the product and its suitability for preferred waste streams. However, the relative success of these measures has been mixed. Complementary to these established approaches is the increasing exploitation of biological and biochemical processes and natural products, including the identification of organisms and enzymes which are able to biodegrade different plastics at meaningful rates. This recent research frequently focuses on microbes from soil and marine environments, identifying numerous enzymes capable of acting on polymers or specific functional groups. While questions remain as to their effectiveness outside of laboratory conditions, the distribution of identified species and their apparent effectiveness indicates the potential benefits of these microbes both individually or in symbiosis with an appropriate host species.
