Abstract:A highly chemo-, regio- and stereoselective cobalt-catalyzed Markovnikov hydrosilylation of alkynes was developed. Various functionalized groups, such as halides, free alcohols, free aniline, ketones, esters, amides, and nitriles are tolerated, which may lead to further applications and late-stage derivatizations. To date, this is the most efficient cobalt catalytic system (TOF=65520h(-1); TOF=turnover frequency) for hydrosilylation of alkynes. The Hiyama-Denmark cross-coupling reactions of vinylsilanes with aryl iodides underwent smoothly to afford 1,1-diarylethenes. A unique regioselectivity-controllable hydrosilylation/hydroboration reaction of alkynes was also described.

Abstract:In this article, the catalytic performance of acylenolato cobalt(III) hydrides [CoIII(O∩CO)(PMe3)3H] (O∩CO = acylenolato ligand) 1 - 3 for alkene hydrosilylation was studied. The experimental results indicate that the three cobalt(III) hydrides exhibit excellent catalytic activity for the hydrosilylation of alkenes. The catalytic effect of hydride 1 is superior to that of complex 2 or 3. This catalytic system has good substrate universality and high selectivity. The catalytic conditions (1 hr, 50 oC) are mild. Aromatic alkenes and alkyl alkenes generate respectively Markovnikov products and anti-Markovnikov products with 99% selectivity. In the study of the catalytic mechanism, silyl cobalt(III) intermediate generated by the reaction between cobalt(III) hydride and silane is considered as the real catalyst. A catalytic mechanism is proposed on the basis of the experimental information and literature reports.

Abstract:Selectivity control is a challenging and important subject in semihydrogenation of alkynes. Here, a combined theoretical and experimental study was performed to reveal the origin of the chemo- and stereos electivity in cobalt-catalyzed stereodivergent semihydrogenation of alkynes. Three NNP and PNP type pincer ligands were considered in calculation. The computational results show that over-reduction of the alkene is forbidden in this catalytic system because the alkylcobalt(l) intermediate formed by alkene insertion prefers to undergo beta-H elimination rather than protonation of the Co-C bond. Distortion-interaction analysis along the reaction coordinate suggests that the higher distortion energy during methanol mediated protonation of the alkylcobalt(I) species suppresses formation of the side product, thereby determined the chemoselectivity. Mechanistic investigation reveals that the active cobalt(l) hydride species formed by pre-catalyst [C] has strong catalytic activity for alkene isomerization. Subsequent control experiments combined with free energy comparison confirms this conclusion and reveals that fast deactivation of catalyst and the weaker reactivity of the cis-alkene intermediate in the presence of the alkyne substrate prevents Z/E alkene isomerization using pre-catalyst [C]. This results in the divergent stereos electivity in the presence of different cobalt pincer complexes. (C) 2018 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A cobalt-catalyzed highly Markovnikov-type and enantioselective hydrosilylation of alkenes is developed for the efficient synthesis of valuable chiral dihydrosilanes. This protocol is operationally simple and atom-economy, and using relatively simple and readily available starting materials. The reaction is suitable for both aryl and aliphatic alkenes with excellent functional group tolerability. The reaction could be easily carried out in a gram-scale. The TOF and TON is up to 1800 and 860, respectively.

Primary mechanistic studies demonstrated that highly regioselective hydrosilylation of alkynes with silanes occurred as a first step, and the subsequent cobaltcatalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of the resulting vinylsilanes showed good enantioselectivity.

Abstract:Several cobalt complexes bearing tridentate (NNN) ligands were synthesized and served as precatalysts for alkyne hydrosilylation with Ph2SiH2. For terminal alkynes, the catalyst L2 b-CoCl2 was selected, and resulted in the corresponding alpha-vinylsilanes with high (Markovnikov) regioselectivity and extensive functional-group tolerance. For internal diaryl alkynes, the catalyst L2 c-CoCl2 exhibited the best activity, and afforded E-selective vinylsilanes through syn-addition in excellent yield under mild conditions.

Abstract:Here, we reported a cobalt-hydride-catalyzed Markovnikov-type hydroallylation of terminal alkynes with allylic electrophile to access valuable and branched skipped dienes (1,4-dienes) with good regioselectivity. This operationally simple protocol exhibits excellent functional group tolerance and exceptional substrate scope. The reactions could be carried out in gram-scale with TON (turn over number) up to 1160, and the products could be easily derivatized. The preliminary mechanism of electrophilic allylation of α-selective cobalt alkenyl intermediate was proposed based on deuterium labeling experiment and kinetic studies.

Abstract:Achieving precise control over regioselectivity and stereoselectivity in the hydroelementation of terminal allenes presents a formidable challenge. Despite the existence of various catalytic methods for their functionalization, this entire class of reactions remains significantly underdeveloped and demands extensive research. Here, we report a method for the hydroelementation of allenes using inexpensive PN5P pincer cobalt complexes built on a triazine backbone. Depending on the substituent at the ring, the method enables the selective synthesis of E‐alkenylsilane or Z‐allylborane derivatives. In the presented approach, silanes and pinacoloboranes play a dualistic role of simultaneous activator and substrate excluding the need for the addition of external bases. Finally, the application potential of the obtained compounds was demonstrated by performing further functionalizations of the obtained compounds.

Abstract:Alkene hydroalkylation enables efficient and selective formation of C(sp3)-C(sp3) bonds with unique advantages, such as exceptional chemoselectivity and remarkable tolerance of functional groups. However, eliminating the heteroatom-containing substrate-specific constraints in achieving precise enantioselectivity remains a challenge in alkene hydroalkylation reactions. Here we report the cobalt-hydride-catalysed enantioselective hydroalkylation of 1,1-disubstituted alkenes, enabling the efficient construction of chiral tertiary carbon centres at the benzyl position. The enantioselective control mode does not rely on Lewis basic or polar heteroatom functional groups; instead, an efficient stereochemical control environment is established between substrates and catalysts through weak C-Hpi interactions in the alkene hydrometalation step. This work adds a differentiated case to the Giese-type addition reaction and metal-hydride-catalysed alkene hydroalkylation precedents towards breaking substrate-specific constraints in the enantioselective control mode. Eliminating the substrate-specific constraints in alkene hydroalkylation reactions, where heteroatom-containing substrates are often required to achieve enantioselectivity, remains a challenge. Now a cobalt-hydride catalyst is shown to overcome heteroatom constraints through C-Hpi interactions between substrates and catalysts, enabling the efficient construction of chiral tertiary carbon centres at the benzyl position.

Abstract:Herein, we report a novel cobalt-catalyzed stereodivergent transfer hydrogenation of alkynes to Z- and E-alkenes. Effective selectivity control is achieved based on a rational catalyst design. Moreover, this mild system allows for the transfer hydrogenation of alkynes bearing a wide range of functional groups in good yields using catalyst loadings as low as 0.2 mol %. The general applicability of this procedure is highlighted by the synthesis of more than 50 alkenes with good chemo- and stereoselectivity. A preliminary mechanistic study revealed that E-alkene product was generated via sequential alkyne hydrogenation to give Z-alkene intermediate, followed by a Z to E alkene isomerization process.

Abstract:Transition metal-catalyzed alkyne dimerization represents a powerful method for the construction of enynes. However, the ambiguous hydrogen transfer mechanism during the dimerization has resulted in controlling the regio-, stereo-, and, where applicable, chemoselectivity remaining a long-standing challenge. Herein, a combination of DFT calculations and quasi-classical MD simulations was used to interrogate the dynamic motion of hydrogen in cobalt-catalyzed alkyne dimerization. The collective results inspired us to propose, for the first time, a substrate-dependent differential hydride transfer model involving either concerted oxidative hydrogen transfer or stepwise oxidative addition, followed by alkyne insertion. The practicability and universality of this oxidative hydride transfer mechanism were further validated by the theoretical studies of experimentally observed selective cross- and homo-dimerization. Charge distribution analyses depicted that the differentiation between those two hydride transfer mechanisms originates from the alpha-silicon effect, which can stabilize the neighboring negative charge of the alkyne. Furthermore, a comprehensive DFT study of the substituent effects of alkynes reveals that the electron-withdrawing group will accelerate the oxidative hydride transfer process, which can open up avenues for mechanistic-oriented selective dimerization.

Abstract:Regiodivergent addition reactions provide straightforward and atom-economic approaches to access different regioisomers. However, the regio-chemistry control to access all the possible results is still challenging especially for the reaction involving multiple addition steps. Herein, we reported regio-controllable cobalt-catalyzed sequential hydrosilylation/hydroboration of arylacetylenes, delivering all the possible regio-outcomes with high regioselectivities (up to >20/1 rr for all the cases). Each regioisomer of value-added silylboronates could be efficiently and regioselectively obtained from the same materials. The adjustment of the ligands of cobalt catalysts combined with dual catalysis relay strategy is the key to achieve regio-chemistry control. This regio-controllable research might inspire the exploration of the diversity-oriented synthesis that involves multiple additions and provide full sets of regioisomers of other synthetic useful molecules.

Abstract:Here, we reported for the first time a mechanistically distinctive cobalt-catalyzed Markovnikov-type sequential semihydrogenation/hydrohydrazidation of aliphatic terminal alkynes in one pot. A cobalt hydride species was employed as two roles for both a unique metal-catalyzed Markovnikov-type insertion of the aliphatic terminal alkynes and then metal-catalyzed hydrogen atom transfer of alkenes. This operationally simple protocol exhibits excellent functional group tolerance and step economy. The hydrazone products could be easily transferred to various valuable amine derivatives.

Abstract:Two silyl [P,Si]‐chelate cobalt hydrides, [(o‐Si (Ph)2‐(PiPr2)C6H4)Co(H)(PMe3)2] (1) and [(o‐Si (Ph)2‐(PPh2)C6H4)Co(H)(PMe3)2] (2), were prepared through the chelate‐assisted Si‐H activation of bidentate preligand, o‐HSi (Ph)2‐(PiPr2)C6H4 (L1) and o‐HSi (Ph)2‐(PPh2)C6H4 (L2) by [Co (PMe3)4] or [Co (Me)(PMe3)4], respectively. Both cobalt (II) hydrides 1 and 2 can efficiently catalyze hydrosilylation of olefins and the catalytic effect of complex 1 is better than that of complex 2. The Markovnikov products were formed from aryl alkenes while the anti‐Markovnikov products were produced from aliphatic alkenes. In the mechanism study, a silyl cobalt (II) intermediate, [(o‐Si (Ph)2‐(PiPr2)C6H4)Co (SiHPh2)(PMe3)2], as the real catalyst is proposed and supported by in situ‐IR study. The molecular structure of complex 1 was determined by single crystal X‐ray diffraction analysis.

Abstract:Catalytic methods allowing for the reliable prediction and control of diverse regioselectivity along with the control of enantioselectivity to access different regio- and enantiomers by switching the least reaction parameters are one of the most attractive ways in organic synthesis, which provide access to diverse enantioenriched architectures from identical starting materials. Herein, a Co-catalyzed regiodivergent and enantioselective reductive hydroalkylation of 1,3-dienes with aldehydes have been achieved, furnishing different enantioenriched homoallylic alcohol architectures in good levels of enantioselectivity. The reaction features the switch of regioselectivity tuned by the selection of proton source. The use of an acid as proton source provided asymmetric 1,2-hydroalkylation products under reductive conditions, yet asymmetric 4,3-hydroalkylation products were obtained with silane as hydride source. This catalytic protocol allows for the access of homoallylic alcohols with two continuous saturated carbon centers in good levels of regio-, diastereo-, and enantioselectivity.

Abstract:The metal hydride catalyzed alkene hydroalkylation enables efficient alkyl–alkyl coupling, yielding structurally diverse chiral organic compounds. However, the control of stereochemical selectivity in alkene hydroalkylation still heavily relies on the assistance of substrate Lewis basic functional groups or polar heteroatom functional groups. We have recently developed a cobalt hydride catalytic system and established a paradigm of enantioselective control assisted by C–H···π noncovalent interactions.
