Abstract:The current neonatal mortality rate in Uganda is high at 22 deaths per 1000 live births, while it had been stagnant at 27 deaths per 1000 live births in the past decade. This is still more than double the World Health Organization target of < 12 deaths per 1,000 live births. Three-quarters of new born deaths occur within the first week of life, which is a very vulnerable period and the causes reflect the quality of obstetric and neonatal care. At Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH), the modifiable contributors and predictors of mortality remain undocumented, yet neonates make the bulk of admissions and contribute significantly to the overall infant mortality rate. We therefore examined the clinical profiles, incidence and predictors of early neonatal mortality of neonates admitted at MRRH in south-western Uganda.
