Abstract:<p>A harmonic vortex beam is a typical vector beam with a helical wavefront at harmonic frequencies (e.g., second and third harmonics). It provides an additional degree of freedom beyond spin- and orbital-angular momentum, which may greatly increase the capacity for communicating and encoding information. However, conventional harmonic vortex beam generators suffer from complex designs and a low nonlinear conversion efficiency. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate the generation of a large second-harmonic (SH) vortex beam with quasi-nonlinear spin-orbit interaction (SOI). High-quality SH vortex beams with large topological charges up to 28 are realized experimentally. This indicated that the quasi-angular-momentum of a plasmonic spiral phase plate at the excitation wavelength (topological charge, <span class="math"><math>q</math></span>) could be imprinted on the harmonic signals from the attached WS2 monolayer. The generated harmonic vortex beam has a topological charge of <span class="math"><math>ln=2nq</math></span> (<em>n</em> is the harmonic order). The results may open new avenues for generating harmonic optical vortices for optical communications and enables novel multi-functional hybrid metasurface devices to manipulate harmonic beams.</p>

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to efficiently generate second - harmonic (SH) vortex beams with large topological charge (TC). Specifically, traditional methods for generating harmonic vortex beams have problems of complex design and low nonlinear conversion efficiency. To solve these problems, the author proposed and experimentally verified a method based on quasi - nonlinear spin - orbit interaction (SOI). ### Main problems 1. **Complex design**: Traditional methods for generating harmonic vortex beams require complex optical designs. 2. **Low nonlinear conversion efficiency**: Existing methods have low nonlinear conversion efficiency when generating high - order harmonics, making it difficult to achieve efficient beam generation. ### Solutions The author proposed a hybrid metasurface combining a plasmonic spiral phase plate and a two - dimensional material (such as monolayer WS₂) to generate SH vortex beams with large TC. Through this method, high - quality SH vortex beams were achieved, with a TC of up to 28, which is the highest value in known reports. ### Key innovation points - **Quasi - nonlinear spin - orbit interaction**: Use Au nanopore arrays as spiral phase plates and directly attach monolayer WS₂ as an efficient nonlinear material. - **Efficient nonlinear conversion**: Increase the nonlinear conversion efficiency by enhancing the local electric field. - **Multifunctional integration**: Besides generating SH vortex beams, it can also simultaneously achieve the focusing function and generate SH lenses with different focal lengths. ### Experimental results - Successfully generated high - quality SH vortex beams with TC as high as 28. - The SH conversion efficiency is estimated to be \( \delta \approx 10^{-6} \). - SH lenses with focal lengths of 30 μm, 50 μm, and 100 μm were achieved. ### Significance This research provides a new way to generate harmonic optical vortices for optical communication and develops new multi - functional hybrid metasurface devices that can manipulate harmonic beams in multiple aspects. This not only improves the generation efficiency but also simplifies the design, providing new possibilities for future optical communication and information encoding.
