Abstract:The ever-growing demand for miniaturized optical systems presents a significant challenge in revolutionizing their core element – the varifocal lens. Recent advancements in ultra-thin, tunable metasurface optics have introduced new approaches to achieving zoom imaging. However, current varifocal metalens have faced challenges such as low focusing efficiency, limited tunability, and complicated designs. Here, we employ the high-contrast transmit arrays (HCTA) structures to design and fabricate a polarization-independent, single-layer flexible metalens that operates at a wavelength of 940 nm. Using a uniform stretching system, we characterized its optical performance to achieve over 60 % focusing efficiency within a 0 %–25 % stretch range, while the focal length changes align with theoretical predictions. Furthermore, our research also successfully demonstrated the capacity of a metalens with a numerical aperture (NA) of 0.5 to efficiently adjust imaging magnification within a 2× range, achieving imaging results that approach the diffraction limit. This research offers promising prospects for the practical use of compact and miniaturized optoelectronic devices in fields like photography, mixed reality, microscopy, and biomedical imaging.

Abstract:Metasurfaces have the potential to miniaturize and improve the performance of any optical element, with applications spanning telecommunications, computing and wearable optics. However, the ability to retain functionality over a continuous, broad range of wavelengths is essential for their widespread adoption. So far, efforts to achieve this have been limited to either a reflection configuration or operation at wavelengths other than the visible. Here, we show that by judicious choice of nanostructures, one can independently control both the phase and group delay, leading to broadband transmissive achromatic metalenses and metalenses with tunable dispersion across the visible spectrum. We demonstrate diffraction-limited broadband focusing and achromatic imaging using metalenses across wavelengths from 470 nm to 670 nm, with focal length change of a few percent across this 200 nm bandwidth. This approach requires only a single layer metasurface whose thickness is on the wavelength scale, and does not involve spatial multiplexing or cascading.
An achromatic metafiber for focusing and imaging across the entire telecommunication range

Abstract:Dispersion engineering is essential to the performance of most modern optical systems including fiber-optic devices. Even though the chromatic dispersion of a meter-scale single-mode fiber used for endoscopic applications is negligible, optical lenses located on the fiber end face for optical focusing and imaging suffer from strong chromatic aberration. Here we present the design and nanoprinting of a 3D achromatic diffractive metalens on the end face of a single-mode fiber, capable of performing achromatic and polarization-insensitive focusing across the entire near-infrared telecommunication wavelength band ranging from 1.25 to 1.65 um. This represents the whole single-mode domain of commercially used fibers. The unlocked height degree of freedom in a 3D nanopillar meta-atom largely increases the upper bound of the time-bandwidth product of an achromatic metalens up to 21.34, leading to a wide group delay modulation range spanning from -8 to 14 fs. Furthermore, we demonstrate the use of our compact and flexible achromatic metafiber for fiber-optic confocal imaging, capable of creating in-focus sharp images under broadband light illumination. These results may unleash the full potential of fiber meta-optics for widespread applications including hyperspectral endoscopic imaging, femtosecond laser-assisted treatment, deep tissue imaging, wavelength-multiplexing fiber-optic communications, fiber sensing, and fiber lasers.

Broadband Achromatic Polarization Insensitive Metalens Design in the Near-Infrared Spectrum

Abstract:Over the past decade, metalens exhibit great potential for applications in compact optical devices. By modulating the phase, amplitude and polarization of the incident light, metalens are applied in a variety of flat optical components, such as micro spectrometers, polarizers and light-field imaging. However, the intrinsic effect of metalens with large chromatic aberration significantly restricts its application in wide-spectrum imaging. Herein, we developed a broadband achromatic polarization insensitive metalens operating in the NIR region in transmission mode. The particle swarm algorithm was utilized to improve the wave aberration by optimizing the reference phase corresponds to each designed wavelength. FDTD simulation was conducted to characterize the focusing performance of the metalens. The focal length of the metalens changes less than 4µm as the incident wavelength is varied from 1µm to 1.4µm. The maximum focusing efficiency of the designed metalens with a numerical aperture of 0.45 is about 43% near wavelength λ = 1.33µm. This research also paves a way for the application of metalens in night vision imaging.

Abstract:Optical metalenses offer a compact approach for the development of nanoscale optical devices with various imaging functionalities. Realizing high-quality images using metalenses with large numerical aperture (NA) requires eliminating unwanted optical aberrations. Existing strategies have largely focused only on correcting chromatic aberrations, and a metalens capable of simultaneously correcting chromatic and spherical aberrations has not yet been developed. Here, this issue is addresed by realizing an aplanatic phase profile for a red-green-blue (RGB) achromatic metalens, thereby demonstrating an RGB-achromatic aplanatic metalens. This device consists of crystalline silicon nanostructures and it enables RGB-achromatic aplanatic focusing with an NA of 0.635. The focal length of metalens remains unchanged at the three RGB wavelengths, whereas the associated focal spots are significantly smaller than those of an RGB-achromatic metalens with spherical aberrations. An enhanced RGB imaging resolution is demonstrated, offering exciting opportunities to power up various imaging and display applications using flat metalenses. This paper demonstrates a high NA RGB-achromatic aplanatic metalens which successfully eliminates chromatic aberration at three RGB wavelengths, while the associated focal spots are significantly smaller than those of an RGB-achromatic metalens with spherical aberration. Abstract:Near-eye optical systems, as an important component of virtual reality displays, have attracted great research interest recently. However, current systems have complex structures and face the design challenge of combining compact, short-focus design with wide field of view and high angular resolution. In this paper, we propose a short-focus near-eye optical system with wide field of view and high angular resolution, referred to as a meta-eyepiece, by patterning a single-layer polarization-insensitive metasurface on a substrate. The metasurface, featuring a quasi-periodic nanopillar arrangement, enables precise phase modulation and enhances design flexibility. The desired metaform phase can be obtained by modeling the light propagation of the meta-eyepiece to determine key design parameters, utilizing metaform phase polynomials, customizing the objective merit function and employing advanced optimization algorithms. Our system achieves a focal length of approximately 22 mm with an 80° field of view, offering compactness superior to conventional VR optics and a minimum resolvable angle less than 1.25 arcminutes, ensuring high angular resolution. It also exhibits excellent imaging performance with full-field modulation transfer function values exceeding 0.5 at 62.5 lp/mm. Although the initial system utilizes ray optics, the scaled version is validated for its feasibility and scalability through full-wave simulations. Our meta-eyepiece structure and design method show the potential of metasurfaces for applications in virtual reality, offering valuable support for technological development in this field.

High-efficiency broadband achromatic metalens in the visible

Abstract:The metalenses have been extensively studied for their compact and flexible characteristics in focusing and imaging applications. However, it remains a significant challenge to design a broadband achromatic metalens that maintains high efficiency under arbitrary polarization incidence. In this work, we design a broadband achromatic metalens that achieves polarization-independent, high-efficiency focusing by effectively utilizing both co-polarization and cross-polarization components of the transmitted light. Using a minimalist anisotropic nanofin library, we optimize the phase distribution of the metalens at each designed wavelength with the particle swarm algorithm. Numerical simulations demonstrate a stable focal length with a deviation of less than 4$\%$ and an average focusing efficiency of 80.5$\%$ in the visible wavelength range of 450 to 650 nm. Moreover, we design a multi-wavelength off-axis bi-focal metalens to demonstrate the flexible control of output light phase and dispersion achieved by this method. The generality of this design enables its implementation in various metasurface devices, accelerating applications in broadband imaging and virtual/augmented reality.

Abstract:Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) have found widespread applications in education, engineering, healthcare, and entertainment. However, these near-eye displays are often bulky and heavy, and thus are not suitable for long-term wearing. Metalenses, with an ultra-thin formfactor, subwavelength modulation scale, and high modulation flexibility, are promising candidates to replace the conventional optics in AR display systems. In this work, we proposed and fabricated a novel reflective dielectric metalens-visor based on Pancharatnam-Berry phase with see-through capability. It achieves diffraction-limited focusing behavior for the reflected red light, while keeping a good transmission spectrum in the visible region. Hence, this single piece metalens-visor can perform the function of two integrated elements simultaneously: an eyepiece and an optical combiner, which in turn greatly reduces the weight and the size of an AR display. We have implemented a proof-of-concept AR display system employing the metalens-visor, and experimentally demonstrated color AR images with good image quality. This work reveals the great potential of multi-functional metasurface devices which enables optical integration in interdisciplinary applications including wearable displays, biological imaging, and aeronautic optical instruments.

Abstract:A key goal of metalens research is to achieve wavefront shaping of light using optical elements with thicknesses on the order of the wavelength. Such miniaturization is expected to lead to compact, nanoscale optical devices with applications in cameras, lighting, displays and wearable optics. However, retaining functionality while reducing device size has proven particularly challenging. For example, so far there has been no demonstration of broadband achromatic metalenses covering the entire visible spectrum. Here, we show that by judicious design of nanofins on a surface, it is possible to simultaneously control the phase, group delay and group delay dispersion of light, thereby achieving a transmissive achromatic metalens with large bandwidth. We demonstrate diffraction-limited achromatic focusing and achromatic imaging from 470 to 670 nm. Our metalens comprises only a single layer of nanostructures whose thickness is on the order of the wavelength, and does not involve spatial multiplexing or cascading. While this initial design (numerical aperture of 0.2) has an efficiency of about 20% at 500 nm, we discuss ways in which our approach may be further optimized to meet the demand of future applications.

Abstract:We have proposed an all-dielectric polarization-independent metalens, which can be used for sub-wavelength focusing. The phase discontinuity of transmission light is produced by varying the diameter of the nanopillar. In this way, the incident light can be focused into sub-wavelength spot. Besides, finite-difference time-domain results show that near diffraction limit focusing is realized for the wavelength from 580 nm to 750 nm, which means the proposed metalens possesses a broad operation bandwidth. This all-dielectric metalens features polarization independent and broad bandwidth, and thus promises great potential for the applications of nanolithography, dense storage and biophotonics.
High-fidelity achromatic metalens imaging via deep neural network

Abstract:Meta-optics are attracting intensive interest as alternatives to traditional optical systems comprising multiple lenses and diffractive elements. Among applications, single metalens imaging is highly attractive due to the potential for achieving significant size reduction and simplified design. However, single metalenses exhibit severe chromatic aberration arising from material dispersion and the nature of singlet optics, making them unsuitable for full-color imaging requiring achromatic performance. In this work, we propose and validate a deep learning-based single metalens imaging system to overcome chromatic aberration in varied scenarios. The developed deep learning networks computationally reconstruct raw imaging captures through reliably refocusing red, green and blue channels to eliminate chromatic aberration and enhance resolution without altering the metalens hardware. The networks demonstrate consistent enhancement across different aperture sizes and focusing distances. Images outside the training set and real-world photos were also successfully reconstructed. Our approach provides a new means to achieve achromatic metalenses without complex engineering, enabling practical and simplified implementation to overcome inherent limitations of meta-optics.

Abstract:Two key metrics for imaging systems are their magnification and optical bandwidth. While high-quality imaging systems today achieve bandwidths spanning the whole visible spectrum and large changes in magnification via optical zoom, these often entail lens assemblies with bulky elements unfit for size-constrained applications. Metalenses present a methodology for miniaturization, but their strong chromatic aberrations and the lack of a varifocal, achromatic element limit their utility. Although exemplary broadband achromatic metalenses are realizable via dispersion engineering, in practice, these designs are limited to small physical apertures as large area lenses would require phase compensating scatterers with aspect ratios infeasible for fabrication. Many applications, however, necessitate larger areas to collect more photons for better signal-to-noise ratio and furthermore must also operate with unpolarized light. In this paper, we simultaneously achieve achromatic operation at visible wavelengths and varifocal control using a polarization-insensitive, hybrid optical–digital system with area unconstrained by dispersion-engineered scatterers. We derive phase equations for a pair of conjugate metasurfaces that generate a focused accelerating beam for chromatic focal shift control and a wide tunable focal length range of 4.8 mm (a 667-diopter change). Utilizing this conjugate pair, we realize a near spectrally invariant point spread function across the visible regime. We then combine the metasurfaces with a postcapture deconvolution algorithm to image full-color patterns under incoherent white light, demonstrating an achromatic 5× zoom range. Simultaneously achromatic and varifocal metalenses could have applications in various fields including augmented reality, implantable microscopes, and machine vision sensors.

Achromatic diffractive liquid-crystal optics for virtual reality displays

Abstract:Diffractive liquid-crystal optics is a promising optical element for virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality as it provides an ultrathin formfactor and lightweight for human factors and ergonomics. However, its severe chromatic aberrations impose a big challenge for full-color display applications. In this study, we demonstrate an achromatic diffractive liquid-crystal device to overcome this longstanding chromatic aberration issue. The proposed device consists of three stacked diffractive liquid crystal optical elements with specifically designed spectral response and polarization selectivity. The concept is validated by both simulations and experiments. Our experimental results show a significant improvement in imaging performance with two types of light engines: a laser projector and an organic light-emitting diode display panel. In addition, our simulation results indicate that the lateral color shift is reduced by ~100 times in comparison with conventional broadband diffractive liquid-crystal lens. Potential applications for VR-enabled metaverse, spatial computing, and digital twins that have found widespread applications in smart tourism, smart education, smart healthcare, smart manufacturing, and smart construction are foreseeable.

Abstract:Overcoming chromatic aberrations is a vital concern in imaging systems in order to facilitate full-color and hyperspectral imaging. By contrast, large dispersion holds opportunities for spectroscopy and tomography. Combining both functions into a single component will significantly enhance its versatility. A strategy is proposed to delicately integrate two lenses with a static resonant phase and a switchable geometric phase separately. The former is a metasurface lens with a linear phase dispersion. The latter is composed of liquid crystals (LCs) with space-variant orientations with a phase profile that is frequency independent. By this means, a broadband achromatic focusing from 0.9 to 1.4 THz is revealed. When a saturated bias is applied on LCs, the geometric phase modulation vanishes, leaving only the resonant phase of the metalens. Correspondingly, the device changes from achromatic to dispersive. Furthermore, a metadeflector with tunable dispersion is demonstrated to verify the universality of the proposed method. Our work may pave a way toward active metaoptics, promoting various imaging applications.

Abstract:Metasurface provides a powerful platform to correct the chromatic aberration of conventional lenses in a flexible, integratable, and ultra-compact manner. Mid-wavelength infrared has promised many exciting applications ranged from molecular fingerprint detection to low-light-level night vision. Developing broadband achromatic metalens in mid-wavelength infrared becomes necessary to meet the increasingly urgent demands on high performance photonic devices. Here, we demonstrate the broadband achromatic metalenses from 3.5 to 5 µm with all-silicon metasurfaces. Large phase dispersion control range is achieved to realize metalenses with both large numerical apertures and sample sizes while maintaining high focusing efficiency. The experimental results verify the diffraction-limited achromatic focusing and imaging of the metalenses in mid-wavelength infrared. Additionally, we also demonstrate the versatility by successfully implementing the generation of the broadband achromatic focusing optical vortex (L = 2). This work represents a solid step toward practical implementation of metalens and may find applications in mid-wavelength infrared imaging and detections.

Abstract:The elimination of broadband chromatic aberrations is a crucial factor for focusing lenses. Conventional refractive glass lenses are bulky, unwieldy, and eradicating their chromatic dispersion is complicated. Dielectric metalenses represent a promising alternative due to their ultra-thin, ultra-compact, single-layer, and planar profile on the order of the wavelength or below. Here, we design an achromatic dielectric metalens for linear polarization that achieves continuous focusing performance over an ultra-broad band from 1.31 mu m to 1.55 mu m. The metalens consists of a single layer of elliptic Si nanocylinders with different radii meticulously designed for an accurate manipulation of the phase profile. The focal length remains constant with a less than 1.6% alternation over the entire operation bandwidth (compared with 9.4% alternation of a chromatic metalens). The high NA (0.36), high focal efficiency (average over 50%), and small FWHM all corroborate the excellent focusing performance of our metalens. Furthermore, the continuous broadband focusing performance is preserved under oblique incidence (10 degrees angle) with a stable focal length. The designed metalens offers important opportunities for applications in linear polarized optics, fiber sensors, laser scanning fluorescence microscopy, optical signal transmission, and integrated on-chip devices in the forthcoming future. Visible-light Metalens Far-Field Nanofocusing Effects with Active Tuning of Focus Based on MIM Subwavelength Structures Used in an Integrated Imaging Array

Abstract:We propose a structure of a far-field nanofocusing metalens with focal shifting that is actively tuned at visible wavelengths. Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) can be excited by the metal-insulator-metal (MIM) subwavelength structure at visible wavelengths. The coherent interference of SPPs emitted by subwavelength nanostructures can form a nanoscale focus. When the SPPs are excited and pass through several concentric ring gratings with specific aspect ratios, the extraordinary optical transmission phenomenon occurs. Two metal concentric ring gratings achieve double diffraction, scattering light to the far field. An anisotropic or isotropic electrically adjustable refractive index material, such as liquid-crystal or optical phase change material, is filled in a dielectric layer between two metal layers, and the effective refractive index is modulated by electronically controlled active tuning. The focal shift is achieved by changing the effective refractive index of the intermediate dielectric. In addition, different incident wavelengths correspond to different effective refractive indices to achieve time-division-multiplexing multi-wavelength achromatic focusing. The finite-difference time-domain method was used to simulate the effect of substrate effective refractive index variation on achromatic superfocusing. The results show that the super-resolution focal spot ( F W H M = 0.158 λ 0 ) with long focal length ( F L = 5.177 λ 0 ) and large depth of field ( D O F = 3.412 λ 0 ) can be achieved by optimizing the design parameters. The visible plasma metalens has potential applications in high-density optical storage and optical microscopic imaging, especially in three-dimensional display for light field and integral imaging.

Abstract:Abstract Meta-optics has achieved major breakthroughs in the past decade; however, conventional forward design faces challenges as functionality complexity and device size scale up. Inverse design aims at optimizing meta-optics design but has been currently limited by expensive brute-force numerical solvers to small devices, which are also difficult to realize experimentally. Here, we present a general inverse-design framework for aperiodic large-scale (20k × 20k λ 2 ) complex meta-optics in three dimensions, which alleviates computational cost for both simulation and optimization via a fast approximate solver and an adjoint method, respectively. Our framework naturally accounts for fabrication constraints via a surrogate model. In experiments, we demonstrate aberration-corrected metalenses working in the visible with high numerical aperture, poly-chromatic focusing, and large diameter up to the centimeter scale. Such large-scale meta-optics opens a new paradigm for applications, and we demonstrate its potential for future virtual-reality platforms by using a meta-eyepiece and a laser back-illuminated micro-Liquid Crystal Display.

Abstract:Metasurfaces are 2D metamaterials composed of subwavelength nanoantennas according to specific design. They have been utilized to precisely manipulate various parameters of light fields, such as phase, polarization, amplitude, etc., showing promising functionalities. Among all meta‐devices, the metalens can be considered as the most basic and important application, given its significant advantage in integration and miniaturization compared with traditional lenses. However, the resonant dispersion of each nanoantenna in a metalens and the intrinsic chromatic dispersion of planar devices and optical materials result in a large chromatic aberration in metalenses that severely reduces the quality of their focusing and imaging. Consequently, how to effectively suppress or manipulate the chromatic aberration of metalenses has attracted worldwide attention in the last few years, leading to variety of excellent achievements promoting the development of this field. Herein, recent progress in chromatic dispersion control based on metalenses is reviewed.
