Chalcogen bond has emerged as an unconventional type of noncovalent interaction which provides a useful synthetic tool for organocatalysis and has become one of the frontiers in chemistry. This review provides an overview for the recent advances in chalcogen bond catalysis. The current typical types of chalcogen bond donors, mechanistic insights for the organic transformation and future direction of chalcogen bond catalysis are discussed.

Chalcogen bonding in the solid-state structures of 1,3-bis(benzimidazoliumyl)benzene-based chalcogen-bonding donors

Abstract:1,3-Bis(benzimidazoliumyl)benzene-based chalcogen-bonding catalysts were previously successfully applied in different benchmark reactions. In one of those examples, i.e. the activation of quinolines, sulfur- and selenium-based chalcogen-bonding catalysts showed comparable properties, which is unexpected, as the selenium-containing catalysts should show superior catalytic properties due to the increased polarizability of selenium compared to sulfur. Herein, we present four crystal structures of the respective 1,3-bis(benzimidazoliumyl)benzene-based chalcogen-bonding catalyst containing sulfur (3S) and selenium (3Se, three forms) as Lewis acidic centres. The sulfur-containing catalyst shows weaker chalcogen bonding compared to its selenium analogue, as well as anion-π interactions. The selenium-based analogues, on the other hand, show stronger chalcogen-bonding motifs compared to the sulfur equivalent, depending on the crystallization conditions, but in every case, the intermolecular interactions are comparable in strength. Other interactions, such as hydrogen bonding and anion-π, were also observed, but in the latter case, the interaction distances are longer compared to those of the sulfur-based equivalent. The solid-state structures could not further explain the high catalytic activity of the sulfur-containing catalysts. Therefore, a comparison of their σ-hole depths from density functional theory (DFT) gas-phase calculations was performed, which are again in line with the previously found properties in the solid-state structures.

Abstract:In the past decades, the combination of supramolecular chemistry and catalysis has pushed forward the emergence of supramolecular catalysis as an intersectant and challenging research field. Supramolecular asymmetric catalysis has especially attracted growing attention attributing to their great advantages in both constructing chiral catalyst libraries and facilitating the improvement of catalytic activity and stereoselectivity, which promoted the development of green and sustainable chemistry. In this review, we summarize the progress on the supramolecular asymmetric catalysis involved crown ethers and their pseudorotaxanes and rotaxanes derivatives. The host–guest chemistry based on crown ethers has been successfully utilized to construct chiral catalysts or to regulate the asymmetric catalysis in both the metal and non-metal catalytic systems. The design and construction of supramolecular chiral catalysts, as well as their applications in catalyzing asymmetric reactions or modulating catalytic activity and stereoselectivity are systemically introduced.

Abstract:Chirality is a fundamental property of nature with relevance in biochemistry and physics, particularly in the field of catalysis. Understanding the mechanisms underlying chirality transfer is crucial for advancing the knowledge of chiral-related catalysis. Chiral quantum materials with intriguing chirality-dependent electronic properties, such as spin-orbital coupling (SOC) and exotic spin/orbital angular momentum (SAM/OAM), open novel avenues for linking solid-state topologies with chiral catalysis. In this review, the growth of topological homochiral crystals (THCs) is described, and their applications in heterogeneous catalysis, including hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen electrocatalysis, and asymmetric catalysis are summarized. A possible link between chirality-dependent electronic properties and heterogeneous catalysis is discussed. Finally, existing challenges in this field are highlighted, and a brief outlook on the impact of THCs on the overarching chemical-physical research is presented.
Highly Enantioselective Organocatalysis with Bidentate Halogen Bond Donors

Abstract:As the employment of ”non-classical” non-covalent interactions like halogen bonding (XB) in asymmetric catalysis is still at a very early stage, there are significant challenges to overcome. In some reported cases, the relevance of halogen bonding to the catalytic action is unclear, while in others, catalyst activity is limited. Herein, we present the second generation of a bidentate iodine(I)-based halogen bond donor as a modifiable and highly active chiral halogen bonding catalyst. With these modified derivatives, high stereocontrol of up to 98% ee could be achieved in a model Mukaiyama aldol reaction for a range of different substrates. Importantly, the crucial role of halogen bonding in this catalytic process was demonstrated by the low performance of the non-iodinated variants.

Abstract:Exploring unknown supramolecular interacting forces to create novel supramolecular materials is an eternal theme of supramolecular science. Here, we first report a new family of supramolecular polymers formed by unconventional chalcogen-bonding interactions. A class of chalcogen-containing macrocyclic receptors, termed as chalcogena[4]arene (ChA[4], Ch = Te and Se), are designed as chalcogen-bonding donors. Using homoditopic ChA[4]s as monomers, they can linearly polymerize with a twin-headed N-oxide dianion surfactant to organize into noncovalent polymer arrays via end-to-end Ch center dot center dot center dot O- chalcogen-chalcogen complexation in aqueous media and further self-assemble into supramolecular hydrogel fibers. The binding chemistries of different chalcogen bonds play a decisive role in tuning the parameters of noncovalent polymerizations and the mechanical properties of hydrogel networks. Moreover, such chalcogen-bonding-mediated polymer arrays can be reversibly disconnected by competing anions. This study would inspire a new direction inquiry of unorthodox supramolecular interactions and their related supramolecular materials.

Abstract:Enantioselective transition metal catalysis is an area very much at the forefront of contemporary synthetic research. The development of processes that enable the efficient synthesis of enantiopure compounds is of unquestionable importance to chemists working within the many diverse fields of the central science. Traditional approaches to solving this challenge have typically relied on leveraging repulsive steric interactions between chiral ligands and substrates in order to raise the energy of one of the diastereomeric transition states over the other. By contrast, this Review examines an alternative tactic in which a set of attractive noncovalent interactions operating between transition metal ligands and substrates are used to control enantioselectivity. Examples where this creative approach has been successfully applied to render fundamental synthetic processes enantioselective are presented and discussed. In many of the cases examined, the ligand scaffold has been carefully designed to accommodate these attractive interactions, while in others, the importance of the critical interactions was only elucidated in subsequent computational and mechanistic studies. Through an exploration and discussion of recent reports encompassing a wide range of reaction classes, we hope to inspire synthetic chemists to continue to develop asymmetric transformations based on this powerful concept.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:As important noncovalent interactions, halogen bonds have been widely used in material science, supramolecular chemistry, medicinal chemistry, organocatalysis, and other fields. In the past 15 years, halogen bond catalysis has become a developed field in organocatalysis for the catalysts' advantages of being environmentally friendly, inexpensive, and recyclable. Halogen bonds can induce various organic reactions, and halogen bond catalysis has become a powerful alternative to the fully explored hydrogen bond catalysis. From a physical chemistry view, this perspective provides an overview of the latest progress and key examples of halogen bond catalysis via activation of the lone pair systems of organic functional group, π systems, and metal complexes. The research progresses in halogen bond catalysis by our group were also introduced.

Abstract:Inspired by the high efficiency and specificity of enzymes in living systems, the development of artificial catalysts intrinsic to the key features of enzyme has emerged as an active field. Recent advances in supramolecular chemistry have shown that supramolecular coordination cages, built from non-covalent coordination bonds, offer a diverse platform for enzyme mimics. Their inherent confined cavity, analogous to the binding pocket of an enzyme, and the facile tunability of building blocks are essential for substrate recognition, transition-state stabilization, and product release. In particular, the combination of chirality with supramolecular coordination cages will undoubtedly create an asymmetric microenvironment for promoting enantioselective transformation, thus providing not only a way to make synthetically useful asymmetric catalysts, but also a model to gain a better understanding for the fundamental principles of enzymatic catalysis in a chiral environment. The focus here is on recent progress of supramolecular coordination cages for asymmetric catalysis, and based on how supramolecular coordination cages function as reaction vessels, three approaches have been demonstrated. The aim of this review is to offer researchers general guidance and insight into the rational design of sophisticated cage containers for asymmetric catalysis.

Abstract:Organochalcogen compounds are prevalent in numerous natural products, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, polymers, biological molecules and synthetic intermediates. Direct chalcogenation of C-H bonds has evolved as a step- and atom-economical method for the synthesis of chalcogen-bearing compounds. Nevertheless, direct C-H chalcogenation severely lags behind C-C, C-N and C-O bond formations. Moreover, compared with the C-H monochalcogenation, reports of selective mono-/dichalcogenation and exclusive dichalcogenation of C-H bonds are relatively scarce. The past decade has witnessed significant advancements in selective mono-/dichalcogenation and exclusive dichalcogenation of various C(sp(2))-H and C(sp(3))-H bonds via transition-metal-catalyzed/mediated, photocatalytic, electrochemical or metal-free approaches. In light of the significance of both mono- and dichalcogen-containing compounds in various fields of chemical science and the critical issue of chemoselectivity in organic synthesis, the present review systematically summarizes the advances in these research fields, with a special focus on elucidating scopes and mechanistic aspects. Moreover, the synthetic limitations, applications of some of these processes, the current challenges and our own perspectives on these highly active research fields are also discussed. Based on the substrate types and C-H bonds being chalcogenated, the present review is organized into four sections: (1) transition-metal-catalyzed/mediated chelation-assisted selective C-H mono-/dichalcogenation or exclusive dichalcogenation of (hetero)arenes; (2) directing group-free selective C-H mono-/dichalcogenation or exclusive dichalcogenation of electron-rich (hetero)arenes; (3) C(sp(3))-H dichalcogenation; (4) dichalcogenation of both C(sp(2))-H and C(sp(3))-H bonds. We believe the present review will serve as an invaluable resource for future innovations and drug discovery.

Abstract:Abstract: Chirality is a widespread structural characteristic found in nature and plays a vital role in the structure and functioning of almost all biological systems. Nevertheless, the translation of chirality into synthetic systems is highly intricate yet captivating, as it not only applies fundamental understanding but also has the potential to tackle significant difficulties in biochemistry and medicine. Structurally, the process of coordination- driven self-assembly involves the organization of basic molecular components into well-defined porous homochiral metal-organic cages (MOCs). This allows for a systematic investigation of the enantioselective processes occurring within the nanocavities, which have limited space and specific chiral microenvironments. This article aims to provide a comprehensive summary of the recent advancements in supramolecular chirality generated in the fascinating class of porous MOCs. It will cover the synthesis and characterization of these materials, as well as the implications of their stereochemical information in terms of chiral recognition and enantio- separation. Subsequently, a subjective viewpoint will be presented regarding the potential, possibilities, and significant challenges in the future advancement of this domain, aiming to expand the progress in creating novel chiral functional materials in the realm of chemistry and beyond.

Abstract:Metal complexes with organosulfur ligands exist widely in nature. The high polarizability of the electrons on the sulfur atoms is responsible for a variety of structures and the reactivity of metal complexes with sulfur-containing ligands. Organosulfur-containing chiral ligands have various applications in catalytic asymmetric reactions. Our group has been interested in the applications of a series of thiophosphoramide and thioamide ligands in asymmetric carbon-carbon bond-formation reactions. In this account, we describe the synthesis of chiral thiophosphoramide and thioamide ligands and their applications in catalytic asymmetric carbon-carbon bond formation.

Abstract:While progress in enantioselective C-H functionalization has been accomplished employing 4d and 5d transition metal-based catalysts, the rapid depletion of these metals on the earth-crust poses a serious threat in making the protocols sustainable. On the other hand, because of their unique reactivity, low-toxicity, and high earth-abundance, newer strategies utilising affordable 3d transition metals have come to the forefront. Among the first-row transition metals, high-valent cobalt has recently attracted a lot of attention for catalytic C-H functionalization with mono and bidentate directing groups. This approach was extended for asymmetric catalysis due to a fairly thorough knowledge of these catalytic cycle. Four major themes have been investigated as a result of this insight: (1) rational design of a chiral Cp#Co(III)-catalyst, (2) chiral carboxylic acid with achiral Cp*Co(III)-catalysts using monodentate directing groups, (3) Cobalt/salox-based systems, and (4) Cobalt-chiral carboxlic acid (CCA)-based hybrid systems with bidentate directing groups. Herein, we highlight recent developments in high-valent cobalt-catalyzed enantioselective C-H functionalization up to October 2023, with the strong belief that the current state-of-the-art can attract considerable interest in the synthetic community, encouraging new discoveries in the evolving landscape of asymmetric catalysis.

Abstract:The effective synthesis of chiral compounds in a highly enantioselective manner is obviously attractive. Inspired by the enzymatic reactions that occur in pocket-like cavities with high efficiency and specificity, chemists are seeking to construct catalysts that mimic this key feature of enzymes. Recent progress in supramolecular coordination chemistry has shown that metal-organic cages (MOCs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with chiral confined cavities/pores may offer a novel platform for achieving asymmetric catalysis with high enantioselectivity. The inherent chiral confined microenvironment is considered to be analogous to the binding pocket of enzymes, and this pocket promotes enantioselective transformations. This work focuses on the recent advances in MOCs and MOFs with chiral confined spaces for asymmetric catalysis, and each section is separated into two parts based on how the chirality is achieved in these metal-organic architectures. A special emphasis is placed on discussing the relationship between the enantioselectivity and the confined spaces of the chiral functional MOCs and MOFs rather than catalytic chemistry. Finally, current challenges and perspectives are discussed. This work is anticipated to offer researchers insights into the design of sophisticated chiral confined space-based metal-organic architectures for asymmetric catalysis with high enantioselectivity.
