Abstract:We investigate the existence and stability of spatial optical solitons supported by cylindrical Bessel lattices in a competing cubic-quintic (CQ) nonlinear medium. Various families of solitons, including vortex, multipole, and necklace solitons are presented. Vortex solitons with unit topological charge are stabilized by CQ nonlinearity almost in their entire existence domain. There exists a power threshold necessary for the existence of these solitons. Comparing with the defocusing cubic case, the CQ nonlinearity broadens the profiles of the solitons, and also broadens their existence and stability domains. The dark core of vortex solitons can be enlarged by selecting the higher order lattice. Especially, we reveal that this model supports stable vortex solitons with broad intensity distributions and higher topological charges. We also show that stable multiring higher-order necklacelike solitons which cannot be found in other schemes are possible.

Abstract:We introduce a system combining the quadratic self-attractive or composite quadratic-cubic nonlinearity, acting in the combination with the fractional diffraction, which is characterized by its Lévy index $\alpha $. The model applies to a gas of quantum particles moving by Lévy flights, with the quadratic term representing the Lee-Huang-Yang correction to the mean-field interactions. A family of fundamental solitons is constructed in a numerical form, while the dependence of its norm on the chemical potential characteristic is obtained in an exact analytical form. The family of \textit{quasi-Townes solitons}, appearing in the limit case of $\alpha =1/2$, is investigated by means of a variational approximation. A nonlinear lattice, represented by spatially periodical modulation of the quadratic term, is briefly addressed too. The consideration of the interplay of competing quadratic (attractive) and cubic (repulsive) terms with a lattice potential reveals families of single-, double-, and triple-peak gap solitons (GSs) in two finite bandgaps. The competing nonlinearity gives rise to alternating regions of stability and instability of the GS, the stability intervals shrinking with the increase of the number of peaks in the GS.

Motion dynamics of two-dimensional fundamental and vortex solitons in the fractional medium with the cubic-quintic nonlinearity

Abstract:We report results of systematic investigation of dynamics featured by moving two-dimensional (2D) solitons generated by the fractional nonlinear Schroedinger equation (FNLSE) with the cubic-quintic nonlinearity. The motion of solitons is a nontrivial problem, as the fractional diffraction breaks the Galilean invariance of the underlying equation. The addition of the defocusing quintic term to the focusing cubic one is necessary to stabilize the solitons against the collapse. The setting presented here can be implemented in nonlinear optical waveguides emulating the fractional diffraction. Systematic consideration identifies parameters of moving fundamental and vortex solitons (with vorticities 0 and 1 or 2, respectively) and maximum velocities up to which stable solitons persist, for characteristic values of the Levy index which determines the fractionality of the underlying model. Outcomes of collisions between 2D solitons moving in opposite directions are identified too. These are merger of the solitons, quasi-elastic or destructive collisions, and breakup of the two colliding solitons into a quartet of secondary ones.

Abstract:We demonstrate two new types of non-circularly-symmetric solitons, the elliptical and rectangular solitons, which can be sustained by the cubic–quintic nonlinearity in the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a linear potential well. The characteristics of these solitons are investigated in some detail. Notably, the elliptical and circular solitons can transform into each other, and similarly the rectangular and square solitons can transform into each other. Interestingly, we find that elliptical and rectangular solitons can also transform into each other—a phenomenon not readily seen among different types of solitons. In addition, the rotation of elliptical and rectangular solitons is displayed as well. Finally, we find that stable vortex modes of elliptical and rectangular solitons can be also supported by our model.

Abstract:We obtain exact spatiotemporal similaritons to a (3+1)-dimensional inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrodinger equation, which describes the propagation of optical pulses in a cubic-quintic nonlinearity medium with distributed dispersion and gain. A one-to-one correspondence between such self-similar waves and solutions of the elliptic equation is found when a certain compatibility condition is satisfied. Based on exact solutions, we discuss evolutional behaviors of self-similar cnoidal waves and chirped similaritons in two kind of typical soliton control systems. Moreover, the comparison between chirped similaritons and chirp-free solitons is given.

Abstract:Although most soliton research has traditionally considered dominant quadratic dispersion, the recent discovery of pure-quartic solitons has inspired analysis of soliton solutions with large higher orders of dispersion. Here we present analytic expressions for families of bright soliton solutions at arbitrary dispersion orders and practical methods to obtain the associated dispersion relations. These results provide a framework for considering higher order dispersion solitons and show the potential for further investigation of solitons in higher order dispersion systems.

Abstract:We concentrate on a (1+1)-dimensional weakly nonlocal conformable fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with cubic–quintic nonlinearities, and get some exact combined soliton solutions and periodic solutions based on the Jacobian elliptic function method and double function method. We discuss dynamical behaviors of bright soliton, dark soliton, periodic bright soliton train and periodic M-shaped soliton train, and find that shift distances along the x-direction of these solitons all add if the value of the fractional order increases.

Abstract:It is well known that the two-dimensional (2D) nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) with the cubic-quintic (CQ) nonlinearity supports a family of stable fundamental solitons, as well as solitary vortices (alias vortex rings), which are stable for sufficiently large values of the norm. We study stationary localized modes in a symmetric linearly coupled system of two such equations, focusing on asymmetric states. The model may describe "optical bullets" in dual-core nonlinear optical waveguides (including spatiotemporal vortices that were not discussed before), or a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) loaded into a "dual-pancake" trap. Each family of solutions in the single-component model has two different counterparts in the coupled system, one symmetric and one asymmetric. Similarly to the earlier studied coupled 1D system with the CQ nonlinearity, the present model features bifurcation loops, for fundamental and vortex solitons alike: with the increase of the total energy (norm), the symmetric solitons become unstable at a point of the direct bifurcation, which is followed, at larger values of the energy, by the reverse bifurcation restabilizing the symmetric solitons. However, on the contrary to the 1D system, the system may demonstrate a double bistability for the fundamental solitons. The stability of the solitons is investigated via the computation of instability growth rates for small perturbations. Vortex rings, which we study for two values of the "spin", s = 1 and 2, may be subject to the azimuthal instability, like in the single-component model. We also develop a quasi-analytical approach to the description of the bifurcations diagrams, based on the variational approximation. Splitting of asymmetric vortices, induced by the azimuthal instability, is studied by means of direct simulations. Interactions between initially quiescent solitons of different types are studied too.

Abstract:We demonstrate the generation of vortex solitons in a model of dissipative optical media with the singular anti-cubic (AC) nonlinearity, by launching a vorticity-carrying Gaussian input into the medium modeled by the cubic-quintic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. The effect of the AC term on the beam propagation is investigated in detail. An analytical result is produced for the asymptotic form of fundamental and vortical solitons at the point of r -> 0, which is imposed by the AC term. Numerical simulations identify parameter domains that maintain stable dissipative solitons in the form of vortex clusters. The number of vortices in the clusters is equal to the vorticity embedded in the Gaussian input. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We construct families of ordinary and gap solitons (GSs), including solitary vortices, in the two-dimensional (2D) system based on the nonlinear-SchrÄodinger/Gross-Pitaevskii equation with the 2D or quasi-1D (Q1D) periodic linear potential, combined with the periodic modulation of the cubic nonlinearity (also in the 2D or Q1D form), which is, generally, incommensurate with the linear potential, thus forming a \nonlinear quasicrystal". Stable vortices are built as complexes of four peaks with the separation between them equal to the double period of the linear potential. The system may be realized in photonic crystals or Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). The variational approximation (VA) is applied to ordinary solitons (residing in the semi-infinite gap), and numerical methods are used to construct solitons of all the types. Stability regions are identified for soliton families in all the versions of the model.

Abstract:We report on the existence and stability of mixed-gap vector surface solitons at the interface between a uniform medium and an optical lattice with fractional-order diffraction. Two components of these vector surface solitons arise from the semi-infinite and the first finite gaps of the optical lattices, respectively. It is found that the mixed-gap vector surface solitons can be stable in the nonlinear fractional Schrödinger equations. For some propagation constants of the first component, the stability domain of these vector surface solitons can also be widened by decreasing the Lévy index. Moreover, we also perform stability analysis on the vector surface solitons, and it is corroborated by the propagations of the perturbed vector surface solitons.

Abstract:Modern Physics Letters B, Ahead of Print. In this paper, we study the Schrödinger–Hirota equation in birefringent fibers incorporating cubic–quartic dispersion. The model studied comes with a cubic–quintic nonlinear structure. The governing model introduced in this study is novel and original, and the obtained solitons have not been reported before. The Schrödinger–Hirota equation is an important modified structure within the higher-order NLSE that garnered significant attention in the fields of mathematics and physics, especially in the context of the transmission of solitons in water waves and optical fibers. To investigate optical solitons for this model, three widely applied in various research studies are implemented for our governing model. These methods are the Unified Riccati expansion method, the addendum to Kudryashov's method, and the addendum to the modified Sub-ODE method. A variety of solutions have emerged with this governing model, including bright, dark, singular solitons and the hybrid of these solitons. Also, Jacobi and Weierstrass doubly periodic-type solutions are recovered, which, with selected parameters, these solutions give solitons. Furthermore, for more illustration of the obtained solutions, a detailed discussion with a graphical presentation is presented.

Abstract:This paper studied the propagations of fractional vortex beams in nonlocal nonlinear media, and found that quasi-stable solitons can form when the nonlocality is strong enough and the initial power is equal to the critical power The propagation properties, including intensity patterns, phase structures, transverse energy flows, and rotation period, were all investigated. The critical power of solitons with different topological charges is the same, however, the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of that increases with the increase of fractional topological charge. In addition, we revealed that fractional vortex solitons have lateral shifts in the y-direction, and the shift values can be controlled by the fractional topological charge. Obviously, the quasi-stable fractional vortex solitons have important academic value and potential application to optical switches, optical wrenches and optical communications, etc.

Abstract:We put forward a model for trapping stable optical vortex solitons (VSs) with high topological charges $m$. The cubic-quintic nonlinear medium with an imprinted ring-shaped modulation of the refractive index is shown to support two branches of VSs, which are controlled by the radius, width and depth of the modulation profile. While the lower-branch VSs are unstable in their nearly whole existence domain, the upper branch is completely stable. Vortex solitons with $m\leq 12$ obey the anti-Vakhitov-Kolokolov stability criterion. The results suggest possibilities for the creation of stable narrow optical VSs with a low power, carrying higher vorticities.

Composite solitary vortices of three-wave mixing in quasi-phase-matched photonic crystals

Abstract:We report the composite vortex solitons of three-wave mixing propagate stably in a three-dimensional (3D) quasi-phase-matched photonic crystals (QPM-PhC). The modulation of QPM-PhC is designed as a checkerboard pattern. The vortex solitons, composed by three waves ($\omega_{1,2,3}$) propagating through the lattices, exhibit a four-spotted discrete type, which gives rise to four distinct modes: zero-vorticity, vortex, anti-vortex, and quadrupole. The composite vortex solitons result from combinations of these modes and lead to four cases: vortex doubling, hidden vortices, vortex up-conversion, and anti-vortex up-conversion. Our findings indicate that all solitons can propagate stably through the crystals for 10 centimeters; however, only the vortex-doubling case remains stable over longer distances. This work enhances the understanding of vortex beam manipulation within 3D QPM-PhCs.

Abstract:We report in this paper a study of vortex and anti-vortex dynamics in a complex cubic-quintic Ginzburg-Landau vector equation (CCQGLVE). The variational approach is used to address the analytical aspect and the results obtained are confirmed numerically. The vortex vector (VV) and the anti-vortex vector (anti-VV) are defined with two topological charges m = 1 and m = -1, respectively. The stability zone map showed that the intersection zone corresponds to the region where more stability for the two studied solutions can be obtained. It appears that, the increase (or decrease) of the radius of the vortex craters depends on the competition between the coupling parameters related to cubic and quintic cross-phase modulation (XPM). During the propagation, the interaction between a fundamental soliton and anti-VV transforms the soliton into a vortex after a short time, but both finally undergo self-confinement which probably will generates solitons. In the case of the interaction between a VV and a fundamental soliton, we observed a self-confinement and a transformation into solitons. Considering the interaction between a VV and an anti-VV, we found that both solutions are also self-confined but the anti-VV solution turns into a soliton faster than the VV solution. This confirms that the anti-VV is the better solution that can be managed with system coupling parameters than the VV one.

Abstract:We investigate the behavior of optical solitons within a nonlinear medium characterized by temporally varying second-order dispersion, cubic–quintic–septimal nonlinearities, and linear gain or loss. Our analysis yields analytical solutions for both bright and dark nonautonomous solitons governed by the generalized cubic–quintic–septimal nonlinear Schrödinger's equation with time-dependent coefficients. These soliton solutions exhibit characteristics, including distributed parameters affecting their amplitude, position, and phase, offering effective control over their evolution. Through examination of different material parameters, we observe features in the evolution of these soliton structures, demonstrating the influence of system parameter modulation. Notably, our findings highlight the potential for dynamic control of soliton behavior through adjustments of time-modulated group velocity dispersion and gain or loss parameters.

Dynamics of vortex-antivortex pairs and rarefaction pulses in liquid light

Abstract:We present a numerical study of the cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation in two transverse dimensions, relevant for the propagation of light in certain exotic media. A well-known feature of the model is the existence of flat-top bright solitons of fixed intensity, whose dynamics resembles the physics of a liquid. They support traveling wave solutions, consisting of rarefaction pulses and vortex-antivortex pairs. In this work, we demonstrate how the vortex-antivortex pairs can be generated in bright soliton collisions displaying destructive interference followed by a snake instability. We then discuss the collisional dynamics of the dark excitations for different initial conditions. We describe a number of distinct phenomena including vortex exchange modes, quasielastic flyby scattering, solitonlike crossing, fully inelastic collisions, and rarefaction pulse merging.
M-shaped solitons in cubic nonlinear media with a composite linear potential

Abstract:The M-shaped solitons—a special type of solitons—have been reported in many models, while most of them are not focused on the commonly used nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE), which is widely employed to describe the propagation of laser beams in nonlinear media or the evolution of Bose–Einstein condensates. We demonstrate that families of M-shaped solitons can be generated in the NLSE with cubic (Kerr) nonlinear media and the help of a composite linear potential. It should be mentioned that these M-shaped solitons are completely stable for all values of the parameters of the model, a result obtained by the linear stability analysis and verified by the direct numerical simulations. The M-shaped solitons quickly disperse if the linear potential is taken away. We also report robust propagations of breather-like solitons in our model, when we use a specific soliton modulation procedure in the propagation of input M-shaped waveforms. The self-adaptive processes for M-shaped solitons are also investigated, and we show that these solitons will turn into irregular oscillations if the parameters of the external potential suffer a sudden variation. Interestingly, the solitons will keep their M-shaped waveforms and experience regular propagations if the parameters of the potential change gradually.
