Abstract:Solar-thermal technologies for converting chemicals using thermochemistry require extreme light concentration. Exploiting plasmonic nanostructures can dramatically increase the reaction rates by providing more efficient solar-to-heat conversion by broadband light absorption. Moreover, hot-carrier and local field enhancement effects can alter the reaction pathways. Such discoveries have boosted the field of photothermal catalysis, which aims at driving industrially-relevant chemical reactions using solar illumination rather than conventional heat sources. Nevertheless, only large arrays of plasmonic nano-units on a substrate, i.e., plasmonic metasurfaces, allow a quasi-unitary and broadband solar light absorption within a limited thickness (hundreds of nanometers) for practical applications. Through moderate light concentration (∼10 Suns), metasurfaces reach the same temperatures as conventional thermochemical reactors, or plasmonic nanoparticle bed reactors reach under ∼100 Suns. Plasmonic metasurfaces, however, have been mostly neglected so far for applications in the field of photothermal catalysis. In this Perspective, we discuss the potentialities of plasmonic metasurfaces in this emerging area of research. We present numerical simulations and experimental case studies illustrating how broadband absorption can be achieved within a limited thickness of these nanostructured materials. The approach highlights the synergy among different enhancement effects related to the ordered array of plasmonic units and the efficient heat transfer promoting faster dynamics than thicker structures (such as powdered catalysts). We foresee that plasmonic metasurfaces can play an important role in developing modular-like structures for the conversion of chemical feedstock into fuels without requiring extreme light concentrations. Customized metasurface-based systems could lead to small-scale and low-cost decentralized reactors instead of large-scale, infrastructure-intensive power plants.

Abstract:Solar energy‐induced catalysis has been attracting intensive interests and its quantum efficiencies in plasmon‐mediated photothermal catalysis (P‐photothermal catalysis) and external heat‐coupled photocatalysis (E‐photothermal catalysis) are ultimately determined by the catalyst structure for photo‐induced energetic hot carriers. Herein, different catalysts of supported (TiO2‐P25 and Al2O3) platinum quantum dots are employed in photo, thermal, and photothermal catalytic dry reforming of methane. Integrated experimental and computational results unveil different active sites (hot zones) on the two catalysts for photo, thermal, and photothermal catalysis. The hot zones of P‐photothermal catalysis are identified to be the metal–support interface on Pt/P25 and the Pt surface on Pt/Al2O3, respectively. However, a change of the active site to the Pt surface on Pt/P25 is for the first time observed in E‐photothermal catalysis (external heating temperature of 700 °C). The hot zones contribute to the significant enhancements in photothermal catalytic reactivity against thermocatalysis. This study helps to understand the reaction mechanism of photothermal catalysis to exploit efficient catalysts for solar energy utilization and fossil fuels upgrading.

Abstract:Hot carriers generated by plasmonic excitations have recently opened up new avenues in photocatalysis. The transfer of these energetic carriers to adjacent molecules can promote chemical transformations that are important for hydrogen generation by water splitting, CO2 reduction and degradation of organic pollutants. Here, we have developed and optimised a plasmonic hot-carrier catalytic system based on silica nanoparticles decorated with plasmonic gold nanoparticles as a source of hot carriers, equipped with platinum nanoclusters as co-catalyst for the enhancement of hot-carrier extraction. The latter plays a triple role by providing: a surface favourable for molecular adsorption; hot-electron generation near the nanoclusters due to field enhancement effects and electron momentum relaxation facilitating the electron transfer across the metal surface, exactly where molecules are adsorbed. The combination of plasmonic and catalytic metals in nano-heterostructured devices provides a new platform for photocatalytic processes and is of significant interest for future solar-based clean technologies.

Abstract:Judicious interfacial-, crystalline-and structural-engineering of plasmonic metal-semiconductor nanocomposites is key to harnessing their plasmonic functions for enhancing solar energy conversion. In this work, metal@semiconductor core-shell nanocrystals with atomically organized interface, quasi-monocrystalline shell and diverse controllable structures/morphologies, which are hardly tractable by conventional synthetic strategies, are accessed by developing an aqueous cation exchange method. The combined studies including Mid-IR femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy measurements show that the superior metal-semiconductor interface attained by the presented method can greatly promote the extraction of hot electrons from metal to semiconductor (the quantum yield of hot electron injection was estimated at similar to 48%) in comparison with the nanostructures bearing unoptimized interfaces. Thus produced metal@semiconductor nanocrystals give 2-3 orders of magnitude enhancement in photocatalytic H-2 evolution activity relative to their counterparts accessed by conventional methods.

Abstract:Plasmonic nanomaterials have spurred significant research interest in enhanced solar-driven photocatalysis due to their strong localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). As this rapid-developing research area begun to raise and answer fundamental questions that determine the photocatalytic performance of plasmonic photocatalysts, it is an opportune time to evaluate the advancement and propose future trajectories. We first outline the fundamentals of LSPR, including its excitation, decay, and influencing factors. We then discuss three main enhancement mechanisms and their applicable scenarios for plasmonic photocatalysis. We then critically assess the recent works performed by our groups concerning plasmon-enhanced photocatalytic reactions. By introducing related works from other researchers, we demonstrate our contributions to the advancements of plasmonic photocatalysis. Finally, we discuss the current challenges and suggest future directions in three aspects: material development, mechanism exploration, and application extension. It is anticipated to delineate the state-of-the-art and direct future research in plasmon-enhanced value-added chemical transformations.

Abstract:Photothermal nanoreactor with rapid charge transfer and improved spectral utilization is a key point in photocatalysis research. Herein, silver sulfide quantum dots (Ag 2 S QDs) were coating on the surface of porous graphitic carbon nitride nano vesicles (PCNNVs) to form Ag 2 S/PCNNVs nanoreactors by a simple calcination method for obtaining efficient photothermal-assisted photocatalytic hydrogen (H 2 ) evolution under simulated/real sunlight irradiation. In particularly, the as-prepared optimal 3% Ag 2 S/PCNNVs sample exhibited the H 2 production rate of 34.8 mmol h −1 g −1 , which was 3.5 times higher than that of bare PCNNVs. The enhancement of photothermal-assisted activity over the Ag 2 S/PCNNVs composite system is mainly attributed to the coupling of the photothermal conversion performance of Ag 2 S QDs and the thermal insulation performance of PCNNVs based on the plasmonic coupling-boosted photothermal nanoreactor. This study presents a promising strategy for the development of high-efficient photothermal-assisted photocatalysts.

Abstract:<p>Plasmonic photocatalysis is a promising approach for solar energy transformation. Comparing with isolated metal nanoparticles, the plasmonic coupling architectures can provide further strengthened local electromagnetic field and boosted light‐harvesting capability through optimal control over the composition, spacing, and orientation of individual nanocomponents. As such, when integrated with semiconductor photocatalysts, the coupled metal nanostructures can dramatically promote exciton generation and separation through plasmonic‐coupling‐driven charge/energy transfer toward superior photocatalytic efficiencies. Herein, the principles of the plasmonic coupling effect are presented and recent progress on the construction of plasmonic coupling architectures and their integration with semiconductors for enhanced photocatalytic reactions is summarized. In addition, the remaining challenges as to the rational design and utilization of plasmon coupling structures are elaborated, and some prospects to inspire new opportunities on the future development of plasmonic coupling structures for efficient and sustainable light‐driven reactions are raised.</p>

Abstract:Integration of surface plasmons into photocatalysis is an intriguing approach to extend the light absorption range over the full solar spectrum. However, the low migration rates and uncertain diffusion directions of plasmonic hot electrons make their photocatalytic efficiency fail to meet expectations. It remains a challenging task to steer the migration of hot electrons and take full advantage of the plasmonic effect to achieve the desired high photocatalytic efficiency. Herein, we have developed an efficient strategy to steer the migration of plasmonic hot electrons through a well-designed hybrid structure that synergizes a “surface heterojunction” with a Schottky junction. The hybrid structure was synthesized by modifying titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanosheets (NSs) with gold (Au) nanoparticles (NPs) as a plasmonic metal and platinum (Pt) NPs as a co-catalyst. The “surface heterojunction” formed between two different crystal facets in the TiO2 NSs can induce the injection of plasmonic hot electrons from Au NPs excited by visible light to TiO2. Meanwhile, the Schottky junction formed between the Pt NPs and TiO2 NSs can force the migration of electrons from TiO2 to Pt NPs instead of flowing to Au NPs, attaining the efficient unidirectional transfer of carriers in the Au–TiO2 system. Plasmonic photocatalysts with this design achieved dramatically enhanced activity in full-spectrum photocatalytic hydrogen production. This work opens a new window to rationally design hybrid structures for full-spectrum photocatalysis.

By reviewing the fundamental mechanisms, recent applications, and latest developments of plasmonic nanostructure arrays in solar‐driven chemical conversion, this study reports on the latest guidance toward the integration of plasmonic nanostructures for functional devices in the fields of plasmonic, photonics, photodetection, and solar‐energy harvesting.

Abstract:The successful development of artificial photosynthesis requires finding new materials able to efficiently harvest sunlight and catalyze hydrogen generation and carbon dioxide reduction reactions. Plasmonic nanoparticles are promising candidates for these tasks, due to their ability to confine solar energy into molecular regions. Here, we review recent developments in hybrid plasmonic photocatalysis, including the combination of plasmonic nanomaterials with catalytic metals, semiconductors, perovskites, 2D materials, metal-organic frameworks, and electrochemical cells. We perform a quantitative comparison of the demonstrated activity and selectivity of these materials for solar fuel generation in the liquid phase. In this way, we critically assess the state-of-the-art of hybrid plasmonic photocatalysts for solar fuel production, allowing its benchmarking against other existing heterogeneous catalysts. Our analysis allows the identification of the best performing plasmonic systems, useful to design a new generation of plasmonic catalysts.

Abstract:<p>Utilizing plasmon‐generated hot carriers to drive chemical reactions has emerged as a popular topic in solar photocatalysis. However, a complete description of the underlying mechanism of hot‐carrier transfer in photochemical processes remains elusive, particularly for those involving hot holes. Photoelectrochemistry enables to localize hot holes on photoanodes and hot electrons on photocathodes and thus offers an approach to separately explore the hole‐transfer dynamics and electron‐transfer dynamics. This review summarizes a comprehensive understanding of both hot‐hole and hot‐electron transfers from photoelectrochemical studies on plasmonic electrodes. Additionally, working principles and applications of spectroelectrochemistry are discussed for plasmonic materials. It is concluded that photoelectrochemistry provides a powerful toolbox to gain mechanistic insights into plasmonic photocatalysis.</p>

Abstract:Plasmonic metal nanoparticles (NPs) have emerged as promising visible light harvesters to facilitate solar-to-chemical energy conversion via the generation of hot electrons by non-radiative decay of plasmons. As one of the most promising renewable energy production methods for the future, electrocatalytic water splitting is an ideal chemical reaction in which plasmonic NPs can be utilized for direct solar-to-fuel conversion. Due to the rapid carrier recombination on plasmonic NPs, hybrid photocatalysts integrating metals and semiconductors are usually employed to separate the hot electrons and holes. However, an understanding of the catalytic mechanism, which is critical for rational design of plasmonic electrocatalysts, including the interfacial charge transfer pathway and real reactive sites, has been lacking. Herein, we report on the combination of plasmonic Au NPs and semiconductors (Ni and/or Co hydroxides) for plasmon-promoted electrocatalytic water splitting. By using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), we find a strong spontaneous interfacial charge transfer between Au and NiCo layered double hydroxide (LDH), which facilitates both the oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions. The real catalytic sites on the hybrid material are confirmed by selective blocking of the metal surface with a thiol molecular monolayer. It is found that the plasmon-promoted oxygen evolution occurs on the LDH semiconductor but surprisingly, the hydrogen evolution sites are mainly located on the Au NP surface. This work demonstrates the critical role of interfacial charge transfer in hot electron-driven water splitting and paves the way for rational design of high-performance plasmonic electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The demonstrations of visible-light-driven chemical transformations on plasmonic metal nanostructures have led to the emergence of a new field in heterogeneous catalysis known as plasmonic catalysis. The excitement surrounding plasmonic catalysis stems from the ability to use the excitation of energetic charge carriers (as opposed to heat) to drive surface chemistry. This offers the opportunity to potentially discover new, more selective reaction pathways that cannot be accessed in temperature-driven catalysis. In this Review, we provide a fundamental overview of plasmonic catalysis with emphasis on recent advancements in the field. It is our objective to stress the importance of the underlying physical mechanisms at play in plasmonic catalysis and discuss possibilities and limitations in the field guided by these physical insights.

Zhou et al. studied the decomposition of ammonia to hydrogen on a copper alloy nanostructure that absorbed light and generated electrons that activated nitrogen atoms on ruthenium surface atoms (see the Perspective by Cortés). By measuring reaction rates at different wavelengths, light intensities, and catalyst surface temperatures, the light-induced reduction of the apparent activation barrier was quantified. Abstract:Plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) hold tremendous promise for catalyzing light-driven chemical reactions. The conventionally assumed detrimental absorption loss from plasmon damping can now be harvested to drive chemical transformations of the NP adsorbent, through the excitation and transfer of energetic "hot" carriers. The rate and selectivity of plasmonic photocatalysis are dependent on the characteristics of the incident light. By engineering the strength and wavelength of the light harvesting of a NP, it is possible to achieve more efficient and predictive photocatalysts. We report a plasmonic--photonic resonance hybridization strategy to substantially enhance hot electron generation at tunable, narrow-band wavelengths. By coupling the plasmon resonance of silver NPs to the guided mode resonance in a photonic crystal (PC) slab, the reaction rate of a hot-electron-driven reduction conversion is greatly accelerated. The mechanism is broadly compatible with NPs with manifold materials and shapes optimized for the targeted chemistry. The novel enhancement platform sheds light on rational design of high-performance plasmonic photocatalysts.
Plasmon-Enhanced Catalysis: Distinguishing Thermal and Nonthermal Effects

Abstract:In plasmon-enhanced heterogeneous catalysis, illumination accelerates reaction rates by generating hot carriers and hot surfaces in the constituent nanostructured metals. In order to understand how photogenerated carriers enhance the nonthermal reaction rate, the effects of photothermal heating and thermal gradients in the catalyst bed must be confidently and quantitatively characterized. This is a challenging task considering the conflating effects of light absorption, heat transport, and reaction energetics. Here, we introduce a methodology to distinguish the thermal and nonthermal contributions from plasmon-enhanced catalysts, demonstrated by illuminated rhodium nanoparticles on oxide supports to catalyze the CO2 methanation reaction. By simultaneously measuring the total reaction rate and the temperature gradient of the catalyst bed, the effective thermal reaction rate may be extracted. The residual nonthermal rate of the plasmon-enhanced reaction is found to grow with a superlinear dependence on illumination intensity, and its apparent quantum efficiency reaches ∼46% on a Rh/TiO2 catalyst at a surface temperature of 350 °C. Abstract:Enabled by surface plasmons, noble metal nanostructures can interact with and harvest incident light. As such, they may serve as unique media to generate heat, supply energetic electrons, and provide strong local electromagnetic fields for chemical reactions through different mechanisms. This solar-to-chemical pathway provides a new approach to solar energy utilization, alternative to conventional semiconductor-based photocatalysis. To provide readers with a clear picture of this newly recognized process, this review presents coupling solar energy into chemical reactions through plasmonic nanostructures. It starts with a brief introduction of surface plasmons in metallic nanostructures, followed by a demonstration of tuning plasmonic features by tailoring their physical parameters. Owing to their tunable plasmonic properties, metallic materials offer a platform to trigger and drive chemical reactions at the nanoscale, as systematically overviewed in this article. The design rules for plasmonic materials for catalytic applications are further outlined based on existing examples. At the end of this article, the challenges and opportunities for further development of plasmonic-mediated catalysis toward energy and environmental applications are discussed.
