Abstract:In this paper, we propose an efficient ordered-statistics decoding (OSD) algorithm with an adaptive Gaussian elimination (GE) reduction technique. The proposed decoder utilizes two decoding conditions to adaptively remove GE in OSD. The first condition determines whether GE could be skipped in the OSD process by estimating the decoding error probability. Then, the second condition is utilized to identify the correct decoding result during the decoding process without GE. The proposed decoder can break the ``complexity floor'' in OSD decoders introduced by the GE overhead. Simulation results advise that when compared with the latest schemes in the literature, the proposed approach can significantly reduce the decoding complexity at high SNRs without any degradation in the error-correction capability.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new linear-equation ordered-statistics decoding (LE-OSD). Unlike the OSD, LE-OSD uses high reliable parity bits rather than information bits to recover the codeword estimates, which is equivalent to solving a system of linear equations (SLE). Only test error patterns (TEPs) that create feasible SLEs, referred to as the valid TEPs, are used to obtain different codeword estimates. We introduce several constraints on the Hamming weight of TEPs to limit the overall decoding complexity. Furthermore, we analyze the block error rate (BLER) and the computational complexity of the proposed approach. It is shown that LE-OSD has a similar performance as OSD in terms of BLER, which can asymptotically approach Maximum-likelihood (ML) performance with proper parameter selections. Simulation results demonstrate that the LE-OSD has a significantly reduced complexity compared to OSD, especially for low-rate codes, that usually require high decoding order in OSD. Nevertheless, the complexity reduction can also be observed for high-rate codes. In addition, we further improve LE-OSD by applying the decoding stopping condition and the TEP discarding condition. As shown by simulations, the improved LE-OSD has a considerably reduced complexity while maintaining the BLER performance, compared to the latest OSD approach from literature.

Abstract:Abstract Medium-length LDPC codes are in demand in certain areas such as mobile environment (Wi-Fi and Mobile WiMAX) and in telecommand links from the ground to space because of their lower latency properties. However, because of the length of these codes is rather short, decoding error rates are worse than those of long-length codes. In this paper, we show that the combination of shortened LDPC codes, whose shortened positions are properly selected, and ordered statistic decoding (OSD) significantly improves the decoding error. For the best choice of shortening positions, we used the integer programming approach. In particular, we utilized Feldman–Wainwright–Karger code polytope for this purpose. Some studies have independently reported the efficiency of shortened LDPC codes and OSD methods. This paper emphasizes that their combination results in multiplicative effectiveness.

New Golay decoding method using auto-encoder and OSD

Abstract:In this study, we explore the potential of leveraging machine learning techniques, specifically auto-encoders (AE), for the decoding of linear block codes. Our findings suggest that this approach can outperform the conventional ordered statistics decoding (OSD) method, especially in a Rayleigh fading channel environment. We have rigorously trained the AE under both additive white Gaussian noise and Rayleigh fading channel conditions to ensure robustness in its performance. The output of the AE is combined with the received vector in a suitable manner to perform OSD. Through our experiments, we demonstrate that this proposed decoding approach yields better results than the conventional OSD method in Rayleigh fading channel when we used (23,12) Golay code.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new ordered statistics decoding (OSD) algorithm called representative OSD (ROSD), specifically designed for polar codes. The generator matrices of polar codes are composed of the rows indexed by an information index set in a lower triangular matrix with ones on the diagonal. Therefore, the generator matrices of polar codes have a staircase-like structure that enables us to present the parallel implemen-tation of Gaussian elimination (GE) in ROSD avoiding the serial GE in conventional OSD. Different from the conventional OSD which forms the most reliable basis (MRB) by selecting reliable bits globally, the proposed ROSD forms an extended basis by selecting relatively reliable bits locally at least one from each staircase. Simulation results show that the ROSD has a similar performance to the LC-OSD and conventional OSD for 5G polar codes and Reed-Muller (RM) construction polar codes.

Abstract:Based on the RU encoding algorithm by bringing the corresponding LDPC(Low-Density Parity-Ckeck) parity-check matrix into approximate lower triangular form,this paper provides a modified greedy algorithm aiming at efficient triangulation of specialized layered LDPC codes.To maximize the size of the triangularized sub-matrix,it is necessary to first operate "column deletion trial" on the LDPC parity-check matrix.It′s most likely that the triangularization process will be terminated if no enough columns are deleted.Therefore,"column deletion trial" is introduced in this scheme to evoke the snowslide effect,which is assumed as an extension to the greedy idea embodied in the original algorithm.By this modified greedy algorithm,the key parameter g is much smaller so that the complexity of the LDPC encoder implementation can be further restrained.
Masking Gaussian Elimination at Arbitrary Order, with Application to Multivariate- and Code-Based PQC

Abstract:Digital signature schemes based on multivariate- and code-based hard problems are promising alternatives for lattice-based signature schemes due to their smaller signature size. Hence, several candidates in the ongoing additional standardization for quantum secure digital signature (DS) schemes by the NIST rely on such alternate hard problems. Gaussian Elimination (GE) is a critical component in the signing procedure of these schemes. In this paper, we provide a masking scheme for GE with back substitution to defend against first- and higher-order attacks. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first to analyze and propose masking techniques for multivariate- or code-based DS algorithms. We propose a masked algorithm for transforming a system of linear equations into row-echelon form. This is realized by introducing techniques for efficiently making leading (pivot) elements one while avoiding costly conversions between Boolean and multiplicative masking at all orders. We also propose a technique for efficient masked back substitution, which eventually enables a secure unmasking of the public output. We evaluate the overhead of our countermeasure for several post-quantum candidates and their different security levels at first-, second-, and third-order, including UOV, MAYO, SNOVA, QR-UOV, and MQ-Sign. Notably, the operational cost of first-, second-, and third-order masked GE is 2.3x higher, and the randomness cost is 1.2x higher in MAYO compared to UOV for security levels III and V. We also show detailed performance results for masked GE implementations for all three security versions of UOV on the Arm Cortex-M4 and compare them with unmasked results. Our first-order implementations targeting UOV parameters have overheads of factor 6.5x, 5.9x, and 5.7x compared to the unprotected implementation for NIST security level I, III, and V.

Abstract:We propose an appropriate decoding algorithm based on ordered statistics for ultra-reliable low latency communication (URLCC) use cases, which typically require low code rates and short block length. This paper investigates tradeoff between performance and complexity of ordered statistics decoding (OSD) algorithms for BCH codes with low code rates over AWGN channel. The block error rate (BLER) performance of the proposed algorithm approaches that of the original OSD resulting in lower complexity. In addition, it outperforms the segmentation-based OSD at a cost of slightly higher complexity.

Abstract:Abstract Layered decoding (LD) facilitates a partially parallel architecture for performing belief propagation (BP) algorithm for decoding low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. Such a schedule for LDPC codes has, in general, reduced implementation complexity compared to a fully parallel architecture and higher convergence rate compared to both serial and parallel architectures, regardless of the codeword length or code-rate. In this paper, we introduce a modified shuffling method which shuffles the rows of the parity-check matrix (PCM) of a quasi-cyclic LDPC (QC-LDPC) code, yielding a PCM in which each layer can be produced by the circulation of its above layer one symbol to the right. The proposed shuffling scheme additionally guarantees the columns of a layer of the shuffled PCM to be either zero weight or single weight. This condition has a key role in further decreasing LD complexity. We show that due to these two properties, the number of occupied look-up tables (LUTs) on a field programmable gate array (FPGA) reduces by about 93% and consumed on-chip power by nearly 80%, while the bit error rate (BER) performance is maintained. The only drawback of the shuffling is the degradation of decoding throughput, which is negligible for low values of $$E_b/N_0$$ E b / N 0 until the BER of 1e−6.

Abstract:A novel Block Gauss Elimination(BGE) approach to construction of the generator matrix of quasi-cyclic low density parity check(QC-LDPC) codes is proposed.In order to calculate the inverse matrix of a QC-LDPC matrix,the generator polynomials are adopted to express the cyclic extended matrices in the QC-LDPC matrix.In this way,the dimension of the matrix to be inversed is greatly reduced.Moreover,when dimension of the extended matrix of the parity check matrix of a QC-LDPC code is a prime number,approaches for judging whether the matrix is invertible and further speeding up the search in the process of the BGE are proposed.Analysis and simulation results show that the present approach not only decreases the memory requirement for constructing the generator matrix of a QCLDPC code but also reduces the computation complexity compared with the usual Gauss elimination method is.

Abstract:In this letter, a two-stage hybrid iterative decoding algorithm which combines two iterative decoding algorithms is proposed to reduce the computational complexity of finite geometry low-density parity-check (FG-LDPC) codes. We introduce a fast weighted bit-flipping (WBF) decoding algorithm for the first stage decoding. If the first stage decoding fails, the decoding is continued by the powerful belief propagation (BP) algorithm. The proposed hybrid decoding algorithm greatly reduces the computational complexity while maintains the same performance compared to that of using the BP algorithm only.
Margin Propagation based XOR-SAT Solvers for Decoding of LDPC Codes

Abstract:Decoding of Low-Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes can be viewed as a special case of XOR-SAT problems, for which low-computational complexity bit-flipping algorithms have been proposed in the literature. However, a performance gap exists between the bit-flipping LDPC decoding algorithms and the benchmark LDPC decoding algorithms, such as the Sum-Product Algorithm (SPA). In this paper, we propose an XOR-SAT solver using log-sum-exponential functions and demonstrate its advantages for LDPC decoding. This is then approximated using the Margin Propagation formulation to attain a low-complexity LDPC decoder. The proposed algorithm uses soft information to decide the bit-flips that maximize the number of parity check constraints satisfied over an optimization function. The proposed solver can achieve results that are within $0.1$dB of the Sum-Product Algorithm for the same number of code iterations. It is also at least 10x lesser than other Gradient-Descent Bit Flipping decoding algorithms, which are also bit-flipping algorithms based on optimization functions. The approximation using the Margin Propagation formulation does not require any multipliers, resulting in significantly lower computational complexity than other soft-decision Bit-Flipping LDPC decoders.

GNarsil: Splitting Stabilizers into Gauges

Abstract:Quantum subsystem codes have been shown to improve error-correction performance, ease the implementation of logical operations on codes, and make stabilizer measurements easier by decomposing stabilizers into smaller-weight gauge operators. In this paper, we present two algorithms that produce new subsystem codes from a "seed" CSS code. They replace some stabilizers of a given CSS code with smaller-weight gauge operators that split the remaining stabilizers, while being compatible with the logical Pauli operators of the code. The algorithms recover the well-known Bacon-Shor code computationally as well as produce a new $\left[\left[ 9,1,2,2 \right]\right]$ rotated surface subsystem code with weight-$3$ gauges and weight-$4$ stabilizers. We illustrate using a $\left[\left[ 100,25,3 \right]\right]$ subsystem hypergraph product (SHP) code that the algorithms can produce more efficient gauge operators than the closed-form expressions of the SHP construction. However, we observe that the stabilizers of the lifted product quantum LDPC codes are more challenging to split into small-weight gauge operators. Hence, we introduce the subsystem lifted product (SLP) code construction and develop a new $\left[\left[ 775, 124, 20 \right]\right]$ code from Tanner's classical quasi-cyclic LDPC code. The code has high-weight stabilizers but all gauge operators that split stabilizers have weight $5$, except one. In contrast, the LP stabilizer code from Tanner's code has parameters $\left[\left[ 1054, 124, 20 \right]\right]$. This serves as a novel example of new subsystem codes that outperform stabilizer versions of them. Finally, based on our experiments, we share some general insights about non-locality's effects on the performance of splitting stabilizers into small-weight gauges.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel hardware-oriented decoding algorithm in the log-domain for non-binary LDPC codes over GF(2m). As for max-log-SPA, only summations and comparisons are required in this new algorithm. During the vertical update, these two operations are divided into layers based on the distribution of variable vectors that satisfy the check function. The number of additions during the vertical update is reduced by a factor of approximately p-2 without a performance loss, where p is the row weight of the parity check matrix.

Abstract:We propose quasi ordered statistic decoding (quasi-OSD) of binary image of Reed-Solomon (RS) codes and explore the application of RS codes to joint source-channel coding (JSCC). Unlike the conventional OSD algorithms that use Gaussian elimination to obtain the systematic matrix, the proposed quasi-OSD algorithm utilizes the parallel Lagrange interpolation at the symbol level, which achieves a lower complexity and comparable performance compared with the locally constrained OSD (LC-OSD), for high-rate RS codes in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region. Additionally, we apply RS codes to the JSCC with known source statistics. At the transmitter, a new partition criterion is introduced in the classified enumerative (CE) coding to encode the source information. Then the multiple-rate RS coding transforms the variable-length codeword of the CE coding into a fixed-length transmitted codeword. At the receiver, parallel decoding is performed to recover the source. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed JSCC scheme outperforms the double polar JSCC scheme by one dB, as expected by Gallager's JSCC bound.

Abstract:Offset Shuffle Networks (OSNs) interleave a-posterior probability messages in the Block Row-Layered Decoder (BRLD) of Quasi-Cyclic Low-Density Parity-Check (QC-LDPC) codes. However, OSNs usually consume a significant amount of computational resources and limit the clock frequency, particularly when the size of the Circulant Permutation Matrix (CPM) is large. To simplify the architecture of the OSN, we propose a Simplified Offset Shuffle Network Block Progressive Edge-Growth (SOSN-BPEG) algorithm to construct a class of QC-LDPC codes. The SOSN-BPEG algorithm constrains the shift values of CPMs and the difference of the shift values in the same column by progressively appending check nodes. Simulation results indicate that the error performance of the SOSN-BPEG codes is the same as that of the codes in WiMAX and DVB-S2. The SOSN-BPEG codes can reduce the complexity of the OSNs by up to 54.3%, and can improve the maximum frequency by up to 21.7% for various code lengths and rates.

Abstract:Based on decoding algorithms available nowadays, a high efficiency decoding algorithm for nonbinary low-density parity-check codes is proposed. The algorithm takes advantage of both the layered decoding algorithm and the Min-max algorithm, which not only achieves the low complexity and the low memory requirement, but also speeds up the decoding by two times. Simulations for a (620,509) code over GF(25) show that with the same bit error rate, the maximum iteration times of the proposed algorithm required is just 45%of Zhang’s algorithm presented in 2011.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an efficient reliability based segmentation-discarding decoding (SDD) algorithm for short block-length codes. A novel segmentation-discarding technique is proposed along with the stopping rule to significantly reduce the decoding complexity without a significant performance degradation compared to ordered statistics decoding (OSD). In the proposed decoder, the list of test error patterns (TEPs) is divided into several segments according to carefully selected boundaries and every segment is checked separately during the reprocessing stage. Decoding is performed under the constraint of the discarding rule and stopping rule. Simulations results for different codes show that our proposed algorithm can significantly reduce the decoding complexity compared to the existing OSD algorithms in literature.
