Abstract:BACKGROUND AND AIM: Surrounding green as a part of resilience environment is reported to benefit mental health by direct protection and the mitigation of hazardous environmental exposure. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the association of surrounding green with incident depression and explore whether and how the association is affected by co-exposure to PM. METHODS: Data were derived from a large-prospective cohort of community-dwelling adults in China. Depression cases were ascertained from local Health Information System linking participants to the health records of hospitals. We estimated the exposure to surrounding green (the average Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, NDVI) and particulate matter (PM, predicted by land-use regression models) at the participants' residential addresses. We conducted Cox proportional hazards models upon adjusting a series of potential confounders including sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle factors and health status, such as self-perceived stress and morbidity. Furthermore, we explored the confounding, interaction and mediation relationship between greenness and particulate matter on the incident depression and estimated the cumulative risk indexes (CRIs). RESULTS:In single exposure models, NDVI was inversely associated with depression incidence. The estimates were attenuated slightly when further adjusted for PM2.5 and PM10. The joint hazard ratio (JHR) of per IQR decrease of NDVI and per IQR increase of PM10 was higher than both in single exposures. Besides, we found the protective effect of greenness was not mediated by PM but was interacted with PM10. CONCLUSIONS:In this large prospective cohort study, residents living in the greener neighborhoods had a lower risk of incident depression. The protective effect was found to be confounded by the PM, since the mediation analysis showed no significance. KEYWORDS: Green space, Particulate matter, Mental health outcomes, Incidence.
Green spaces and the impact on cognitive frailty: a scoping review

Abstract:Some literature indicates that contact with green spaces can benefit health and wellbeing, but it is unclear whether this is protective of cognitive health in older people. Using Arskey and O'Malley's framework the aim was to investigate ageing, cognitive frailty and the effects of green access including any causality. The evidence was somewhat inconsistent but suggestive for a beneficial role of green space exposure on cognitive functions. Results suggested that globally, the poorer urban environments are high risk for older people's mental health and these places often lack parks and green spaces. There is evidence that the level of activity and social participation may be greater with access to green spaces and therefore reduces health risks. Green spaces seem to have a role in preventing cognitive frailty, especially for more vulnerable older populations living in poorer urban environments.

Abstract:This study aimed to contrast the associations of street view-, land use- and satellite-derived greenspace measures with older adults' mental health and to examine the mediating effects of neighborhood environmental perceptions (i.e., noise, aesthetics and satisfaction with recreational opportunities) to explain potential heterogeneity in the associations. Data of 879 respondents aged 60 or older in Dalian, China were used, and multilevel regression models were conducted in Stata. Results indicated that the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), vegetation coverage, park coverage and streetscape grasses were positively correlated with older adults' mental health. The associations of exposure metrics measured by overhead view were stronger than those measured by the street view. Streetscape grasses had a stronger association with older adults' mental health than streetscape trees. Noise, aesthetics and satisfaction with recreational opportunities mediated these associations, but the strength of the mediating effects differed across the greenspace measures. Our findings confirm the necessity of multi-measures assessment for greenspace to examine associations with older adults' mental health in Chinese settings and can contribute to the realization of health benefits of urban greenspace.
Interaction Between Greenspace and Risk Factors for Dementia and Cognitive Decline: a Cohort Study from UK Biobank

Abstract:BACKGROUND AND AIM: The Lancet Commission on dementia prevention, intervention, and care had identified twelve risk factors for dementia and cognitive decline. However, we do not know how greenspace might modify the relationship between these risk factors and dementia incidence or cognitive domains. METHOD: A cohort study was conducted among 435,649 adults aged 37-73 from the UK Biobank between 2006 to 2010. The outcome measures consisted of ICD-based dementia diagnosis and seven cognitive tests, with each test assessing a specific cognitive domain. Residential greenspace indicated by percentage of outdoor greenspace at 300m buffers. We used logistic regression models and multivariate regression models to estimate the effects of 12 identified risk factors, greenspace, and their interaction on dementia incidence and cognitive domains, adjusted for a range of key covariates. RESULTS: Of 502285 participants, 5971(1.20%) were diagnosed with dementia. There is no interaction between greenspace and any risk factor on dementia incidence. However, for cognitive domains, fully models showed interaction effects of greenspace with PMcoarse and PM10 on numeric memory and reaction time scores, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Though there is no interaction between greenspace and any risk factor on dementia incidence, we can find the interaction effects of greenspace with several air pollutants on numeric memory and reaction time. Strategies are needed to improve air quality and greenspace to decrease risk of cognitive decline and dementia.

Association Between Residential Greenness and Cognitive Function: Analysis of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey

Abstract:Introduction Proximity to vegetated green space has been linked to better physical and mental health. However, the relationship between residential greenness and cognitive function and its decline among older adults is not clear in large cohort studies.Methods Our study used the 2000, 2002, 2005, 2008 and 2011 wave of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey. We calculated the Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) using a 500 m radius around participants’ residential addresses. Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) was applied to measure cognitive function. Our study included the cross-sectional analysis using the linear regression, and logistical regression, and also the longitudinal analysis using the linear mixed effects regression, and mixed effects logistic regression. Our study also conducted a sensitivity analysis using the survey-weighted regression. Additionally, our study participants were categorised into those living in areas of positive and negative changes in NDVI in relation to MMSE. All regression models were adjusted for a range of covariates.Results Among 38 327 participants at baseline, the mean MMSE score was 21. Annual average NDVI ranged from −0.11 to 0.76. In the cross-sectional analysis, each 0.1-unit increase in NDVI was associated with a 0.23-point increase in MMSE score (95% CI 0.16 to 0.29) in the linear regression, and an OR of 0.94 (95% CI 0.92 to 0.96) of having cognition impairment in the logistic regression. In the second analysis, looking at changes in NDVI and MMSE score, compared with the participants living in areas with an increase in NDVI, those living in areas with a decrease in greenness had an OR of 1.25 (95% CI 1.18 to 1.34) of a decrease in MMSE, and an OR of 0.90 (95% CI 0.84 to 0.96) of an increase in MMSE. In the longitudinal analysis, we found a significantly weak association (coefficient 0.069, 95% CI 0.0048 to 0.13) in the linear mixed effects regression, but not in the mixed effects logistic regression.Conclusion We found evidence of an association between higher residential greenness and better cognitive function among older adults. Our finding provides insight into neurodegeneration and has implications for preventing dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in China.

Abstract:Background With the accelerating population ageing globally, disability has become a major public concern. Residential greenness may be one of the influencing factors of disability, but epidemiological evidence in the associations of residential greenness exposures with disability is limited. We aimed to investigate the associations of residential greenness exposures with the risk of disability in the elderly. Methods Data of 8,408 residents were obtained from the World Health Organization Study on Global AGEing and Adult Health (WHO SAGE) implemented in China during 2007-2018. Participants were matched to the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) at their residential address. Disability was measured by the 12-item Chinese version of the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS 2.0). The associations were examined using a generalized linear mixed model with stratified analyses by the covariates. Results We observed significantly negative associations of greenness exposures with the summary WHODAS score [NDVI500m: -0.290, 95% Confidence Intervals (95%CI): -0.510, -0.070; EVI500m: -0.453, 95%CI: -0.757, -0.149], and with the score of cognition (EVI500m: -0.472, 95%CI: -0.881, -0.063), mobility (NDVI500m: -0.632, 95%CI: -0.965, -0.299; EVI500m: -0.739, 95%CI: -1.199, -0.280), and participation (NDVI500m: -0.388, 95%CI: -0.651, -0.125; EVI500m: -0.530, 95%CI: -0.893, -0.166). People living alone had a more pronounced association in cognition (NDVI500m: -1.546, 95%CI: -2.471, -0.621). The associations with summary WHODAS score were stronger among participants living in rural areas (NDVI500m: -0.420, -0.683, 95%CI: -0.157), having less education level (NDVI500m: β= -0.618, 95%CI: -0.982, -0.253), and living in northern China (NDVI500m: β= -0.381, 95%CI: -0.776, 0.013). Conclusions Residential greenness may reduce the onset and worsening of disability, particularly for domains of cognition, mobility, and social participation. Because of its stronger influence among people with low socioeconomic status, increasing greenness levels in areas with lower socioeconomic status may promote health equity.
Residential Greenness and Cognitive Function in the Oldest-Old in China: a Prospective Cohort Study

Abstract:Background There is evolving evidence about the effect of greenness on health, with findings from several studies showing a relationship with mortality. How greenness can affect mental and neurological systems has not been clearly elucidated. Currently, there are no prospective studies of how greenness can prevent the decline of cognitive function in the elderly in China. Methods We used the 1998 wave of the China Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS), a prospective cohort representative of the general elderly population (age ≥80 years) in China. We assessed residential greenness using satellite-derived Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) in a 250 m radius around each participant's residential address from 2000 to 2014, and categorised them into quartiles. We assessed cognitive function using an adapted Chinese version of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). We defined participants with scores less than 24 as having abnormal cognition. We excluded participants with abnormal cognition at baseline in 2000. We used mixed-effects logistic regression to estimate odds ratios (OR) and their corresponding 95% CIs for MMSE scores, adjusted for age, sex, ethnicity, marital status, childhood and adult socioeconomic status, smoking status, alcohol consumption, exercise status, activity of daily living, and time since study entry. Findings There were 2345 participants without cognitive impairment at baseline. The mean cohort age was 90 years (SD 6·6). Participants who developed cognitive impairment over time were more likely to be older, female, not married, have low childhood and adult socioeconomic status, smoke, do not exercise, and had poor physical function at baseline. One quartile increase in NDVI values was associated with an odds ratio (OR) of 0·92 of developing cognitive impairment during follow-up (95% CI 0·86–0·99). Age, sex, marital status, socioeconomic status, smoking, exercise, and activities of daily living were significant predictors of cognitive impairment; 1 year of age was associated with an OR of 1·05 (95% CI 1·03–1·06) of developing cognitive impairment. Interpretation Our findings suggest that an increase in exposure to greenness might be an effective strategy to prevent cognitive decline in the oldest-old (aged ≥80 years), which could have implications for dementia and Alzheimer's disease (now the fifth leading cause of death in China). Abstract:Prior research has shown that environmental hazards, such as limited green space, air pollution, and harmful weather, have the strong adverse impact on older adults' cognitive function; however, most of the studies were conducted in developed countries and limited to cross-sectional analyses. China has the largest aging population in the world so the research evidence from it can offer an insight to the study in other developing countries facing similar issues and inform future public health policy and disease control. This study examined the long-term impact of environmental factors, namely, green space coverage, air pollution, and weather conditions on cognitive function using a nationally representative sample consisting of adults aged 45 years and older selected from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS 2011–2018), the China City Statistical Yearbook, and other sources. Multilevel growth curve models were utilized for analysis and the mediator effects of physical activity and social engagement on the relationship between environmental factors and cognitive function were examined. Findings of this study showed that after controlling for sociodemographic characteristics, annual precipitation of 80 cm or more, living in areas with July temperature of 28°C or higher, urban community, and green space coverage were positively associated with cognition score at the baseline and lower precipitation, urban community, and greater green space coverage were associated with slower cognitive decline over a 7-year period. The impact of gross domestic product (GDP) seemed to take into effect more and more over time. These effects did not substantially change after weekly total hours of physical activities and levels of social engagement were added. More research on the mechanisms of the effect of environmental factors on cognition is needed such as the subgroup analyses and/or with more aspects of environmental measures.

Residential Greenness and Risk of Incident Dementia: A Prospective Study of 375,342 Participants.

Abstract:Introduction: Incorporation of greenspace may be a novel environmental policy that might result in positive health effects; hence, this study aimed to investigate the association between residential greenness and dementia incidence. The effects of particulate air pollution on mediating dementia were also determined.Methods: A prospective cohort study involving 375,342 UK biobank participants was conducted, in which Cox regression models were used to determine the association of greenspace exposure with the risks of all-cause dementia (ACD), Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VD). Sociodemographic variables, lifestyle or dietary characteristics and apolipoprotein E4 status were controlled using two levels of adjusted models. Mediation analyses were performed to determine the mediation effects of PMs.Results: The results indicated that there were 4929 ACD, 2132 AD, and 1184 VD incidents throughout the 8-year study. In the multi-adjusted model, each interquartile increment in greenspace (buffer 300m) conferred the lower risks of ACD (HR = 0.968, 95% confidence intervals [CI]: 0.938-1.000]) and VD (HR = 0.926, 95% CI: 0.867-0.989). The fourth greenspace quartile conferred also reduced risks of ACD (HR = 0.891, 95% CI: 0.804-0.989) and VD (HR = 0.778, 95% CI: 0.630-0.960) in reference to the first quartile. With regard to 1000m catchment, each interquartile increment conferred a 5.0% (95% CI: 1.8-8.1) lower risk of ACD, and the fourth greenspace quartile conferred a 10.9% (95% CI: 0.9-19.8) lower risk of ACD compared to the first quartile. The protective effect of greenness might be mediated based on the reduction of PM2.5 and PM10 (P indirect effect<0.05).Conclusions: Increasing greenness reduces the risk of dementia. This study suggests that greenspace is an envi-ronmental strategy that helps prevent dementia.
Interaction between the animal-based dietary pattern and green space on cognitive function among Chinese older adults: A prospective cohort study

Abstract:Green space is associated with better cognition, while the animal-based dietary pattern can be a risk factor. We aimed to verify the associations and explore their interaction among the elderly. The China Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) cohort including 17,827 participants was used. The average green space coverage rate was used to measure green space exposure. The animal-based diet index (ADI) was scored based on the non-quantitative frequency questionnaire of ten types of food intake (three types of animal foods and seven types of plant foods). We used the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) to assess cognitive function. The Cox proportional hazard regression was applied to explore the correlations and interactions. In the models, we gradually adjusted for the potential risk factors. Compared with participants living in the area with the lowest green space, those living with the highest were associated with a 20% decrease in the risk of cognitive impairment (hazard ratio (HR): 0.80, 95% CI: 0.73, 0.89). As for ADI, the highest group was related to a 64% increase in the risk of cognitive impairment (HR: 1.64, 95% CI: 1.38, 1.95). The protective effect of the highest green space group on cognitive impairment was more evident among participants with low ADI (HR = 0.72, 95% CI: 0.62, 0.83), compared to those with high ADI. Green space was positively associated with cognition, while the animal-based dietary pattern was a cognitive disadvantage. The animal-based dietary pattern may mitigate the beneficial effects of green space on cognition.
The Associations of Green Spaces with Older Adults' Mental Health in Perspective of Spatiality, Sociality and Historicality

Abstract:The theory of health fairness requires that improving the benefits of green spaces on health should take into account the characteristics of vulnerable groups such as older adults. Until now, the comprehensive associa-tions of green spaces metrics with older adults' mental health are unclear in China. This study aimed to systemati-cally assess their associations from the perspective of spatiality, sociality and historicality. Data of 879 respondents aged 60 or older in Dalian, China were used, and multilevel linear models were conducted in HLM6.08. Results in-dicated that in the spatial dimension, green spaces metrics derived from overhead view had a stronger association with older adults' mental health than from street view. The park with gentle slopes and irregular boundaries was more positively related to older adults' mental health. In the social dimension, green spaces could adjust and buffer the negative effects of socio-demographic characteristics such as having no homeownership. In the historical di-mension, green spaces had a lasting effect on older adults' mental health, especially for the group of middle income. Our findings confirm the necessity of multidimensional assessments for green spaces to examine associations with older adults' mental health in Chinese settings. The results can provide empirical evidence for realizing fairer allo-cation of urban green spaces resources taking into account individual differences.
Outdoor green space exposure and brain health measures related to Alzheimer’s disease: a rapid review

Abstract:Objectives Summarise studies of outdoor green space exposure and brain health measures related to Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders (ADRD), and determine scientific gaps for future research. Design Rapid review of primary research studies. Methods and outcomes PubMed, Embase and Web of Science Core Collection were searched for articles meeting the criteria published on/before 13 February 2020. The review excluded papers not in English, focused on transient states (eg, mental fatigue) or not using individual-level measures of brain health (eg, average school test scores). Brain health measures of interest included cognitive function, clinical diagnosis of cognitive impairment/dementia/ADRD and brain biomarkers such as those from MRI, measures typically associated with ADRD risk and disease progression. Results Twenty-two papers were published from 2012 to 2020, 36% on <18 years old, 32% on 18–64 years old and 59% on ≥65 years old. Sixty-four per cent defined green space based on the Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (‘greenness’/healthy vegetation) and 68% focused on cognitive measures of brain health (eg, memory). Seventeen studies (77%) found green space-brain health associations (14 positive, 4 inverse). Greater greenness/green space was positively associated various cognitive domains in 10 studies and with MRI outcomes (regional brain volumes, cortical thickness, amygdala integrity) in three studies. Greater neighbourhood greenness was associated with lower odds/risk of cognitive impairment/ADRD in some studies but increased odds/risk in others (n=4 studies). Conclusions Published studies suggest positive green space-brain health associations across the life course, but the methods and cohorts were limited and heterogeneous. Future research using racially/ethnically and geographically diverse cohorts, life course methods and more specific green space and brain health measures (eg, time spent in green spaces, ADRD biomarkers) will strengthen evidence for causal associations.

Abstract:In recent years, research has begun to touch upon the associations between the natural environment and individuals' subjective wellbeing; however, whether such associations would vary among different groups of people remains under-studied. Using four waves (2010-2013) of data from the Chinese General Social Survey, we investigate the group-specific correlation between environment-specifically, greenspace exposure-and individuals' happiness in contemporary urban China. For this study, the normalized difference vegetation index at the county level is a proxy for greenspace exposure. The results from the ordered logit model indicate that county-level green vegetation is associated with individuals' happiness level, but such effects vary with a household's relative deprivation. While greenspace exposure is positively associated with happiness among individuals from less deprived families, it is negatively associated with happiness among those from deprived households. These findings contribute to the body of knowledge of the heterogeneous effect of greenspace on residents' subjective well-being.
A Preliminary Study of the Relationship Between Built Environment of Open Space and Cognitive Health of Older People

Abstract:Many older people are facing various risks of cognitive impairment, while outdoor activities in open spaces may be helpful for their cognitive health. However, the effect of open spaces on cognitive health is unclear. This study aims to investigate the relationships between the cognitive health of older people and the built environment of open spaces. A questionnaire survey of 60 older people aged 60 and above was conducted. Results identified three major components of the built environment of open spaces, namely, planning, supporting facilities, and building services. According to the correlation and regression analysis, it is revealed that 8 BEOS items, including green ratio, a width of the pathway, maintenance of the whole garden, the color of green space, diversity of plants, location, and font of signage, artificial light of sitting area were positively related to memory, while only the size was negatively associated with memory. Only the green ratio could positively predict the concentration. The judgment was positively influenced by the green ratio, width of pathways, maintenance of the whole garden, color of green space and diversity of plants. A BEOS – cognitive health model for older people was built in this study. The results highlighted the importance of plants for cognitive health. Several recommendations, such as not-so-large sizes and diverse plants with vivid colors and signages with big fonts, etc., were proposed to improve the built environment of the open spaces and support the declining cognitive health of older people.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: In a rapidly urbanizing world, many people have little contact with natural environments, which may affect health and well-being. Existing reviews generally conclude that residential greenspace is beneficial to health. However, the processes generating these benefits and how they can be best promoted remain unclear.OBJECTIVES: During an Expert Workshop held in September 2016, the evidence linking greenspace and health was reviewed from a transdisciplinary standpoint, with a particular focus on potential underlying biopsychosocial pathways and how these can be explored and organized to support policy-relevant population health research.DISCUSSIONS: Potential pathways linking greenspace to health are here presented in three domains, which emphasize three general functions of greenspace: reducing harm (e.g. reducing exposure to air pollution, noise and heat), restoring capacities (e.g. attention restoration and physiological stress recovery) and building capacities (e.g. encouraging physical activity and facilitating social cohesion). Interrelations between among the three domains are also noted. Among several recommendations, future studies should: use greenspace and behavioural measures that are relevant to hypothesized pathways; include assessment of presence, access and use of greenspace; use longitudinal, interventional and (quasi)experimental study designs to assess causation; and include low and middle income countries given their absence in the existing literature. Cultural, climatic, geographic and other contextual factors also need further consideration.CONCLUSIONS: While the existing evidence affirms beneficial impacts of greenspace on health, much remains to be learned about the specific pathways and functional form of such relationships, and how these may vary by context, population groups and health outcomes. This Report provides guidance for further epidemiological research with the goal of creating new evidence upon which to develop policy recommendations.

Abstract:Background Stroke and dementia are major neurological disorders that contribute significantly to disease burden and are interlinked in terms of risk. Nevertheless, there is currently no study investigating the influence of residential greenspace on the trajectory of these neurological disorders. Methods This longitudinal study utilized data from the UK Biobank. Exposure to residential greenspace was measured by the percentage of total greenspace coverage within a 300-meter buffer zone surrounding the participants' residences. A multistate model was employed to illustrate the trajectory of major neurological disorders, and a piecewise Cox regression model was applied to explore the impact of residential greenspace on different time courses of disease transitions. Results With 422,649 participants and a median follow-up period of 12.5 years, 8568 (2.0 %), 5648 (1.3 %), and 621 (0.1 %) individuals developed incident stroke, dementia, and comorbidity of both conditions, respectively. An increase in residential greenspace by one interquartile range was associated with reduced risks of transitions from baseline to stroke, dementia, and death, as well as from stroke to comorbidity. The corresponding hazard ratios ( HR s) were 0.967 (95 % CI: 0.936, 0.998), 0.928 (0.892, 0.965), 0.925 (0.907, 0.942), and 0.799 (0.685, 0.933), respectively. Furthermore, the protective effect of residential greenspace on the transition from stroke or dementia to comorbidity was particularly pronounced within the first year and over 5 years after stroke and during the 2 to 3 years after dementia onset, with HR s of 0.692 (0.509, 0.941), 0.705 (0.542, 0.918), and 0.567 (0.339, 0.949), respectively. Conclusion This study observed a protective role of residential greenspace in the trajectory of major neurological disorders and contributed to identifying critical progression windows. These findings underscore the significance of environment-health interactions in the prevention of neurological disorders.

Abstract:The equigenesis hypothesis suggests that greenery has the potential to reduce health disparities across socioeconomic groups. This is important in high-density urban setting, because greenery can improve human health, but also promotes equitable access to health benefits thus reducing health disparities. However, findings are inconsistent, partly due to the predominance of cross-sectional studies. Moreover, the equigenic effects of street-level greenery, remains underexplored. This longitudinal study examined the effect of street-level greenery on the emotional well-being of older adults. We analyzed 3110 street view images from 1,550 locations in Fuzhou, China, collected in 2014 and 2020. Street-level built environment features were measured using the DeeplabV3 network. Emotional well-being, operationalized as perceptions of pleasantness, was quantitatively evaluated using the Microsoft Trueskill approach to convert the paired comparisons of images into a ranked score. Moderation effects of street-level greenery, were investigated through interactions with educational attainment and economic status, based on individual-level fixed effect models. Our findings revealed that: 1) street-level greenery had the most significant influence on enhancing perceptions of pleasantness; 2) the interaction between street-level greenery and average education years, was positively associated with perceptions of pleasantness, while a negative interaction was observed with economic status. These results suggest that while street-level greenery may mitigate income-related disparities, it could accelerate education-related disparities in emotional well-being among older adults. This study offers new insights into the equigenesis hypothesis through a longitudinal lens, demonstrating that street-level greenery may not uniformly improve mental health equity among older adults in Chinese cities.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Subjective well-being (SWB) measures mental health and happiness. Greenspace can have a positive impact on mental health, and higher SWB is associated with lower all-cause mortality. We conducted a mediation analysis on greenspace and all-cause mortality through improving SWB, in a prospective cohort of Chinese older adults.METHODS: We included older adults over 65 from the 2008-2014 Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). We used satellite-derived normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) to measure greenspaces and calculated SWB measured by eight items. Three main statistical approaches were used. First, we used generalized estimating equations (GEE) and Cox proportional hazard models to examine NDVI-SWB and SWB-mortality relationships. Second, we conducted a causal mediation analysis to investigate the mediating effect of greenspace on all-cause mortality through SWB. Third, we conducted subgroup analyses to discover effect modification.FINDINGS: Among 13,133 participants, the mean SWB score and NDVI in 2008 were 28·9 (SD 4·34) and 0·41 (SD 0·14), respectively. We found SWB partially mediated the relationship between residential greenspace and mortality in the adjusted model (average causal mediation effect = 0·11, p = 0·04; average direct effect = 1·96, p < 0·001; total effect = 2·07, p < 0·001) with varying proportions in subgroups. The protective influence was more evident for people with impaired cognitive function, living in rural areas and towns, and with lower income.INTERPRETATION: We found a positive association between greenspace, SWB, and mortality. Greenness in the living environment confers better mental health and promotes longevity in the elderly population.
