Abstract:Optical delay lines implemented in photonic integrated circuits (PICs) are essential for creating robust and low-cost optical signal processors on miniaturized chips. In particular, tunable delay lines enable a key feature of programmability for the on-chip processing functions. However, the previously investigated tunable delay lines are plagued by a severe drawback of delay-dependent loss due to the propagation loss in the constituent waveguides. In principle, a serial-connected amplifier can be used to compensate such losses or perform additional amplitude manipulation. However, this solution is generally unpractical as it introduces additional burden on chip area and power consumption, particularly for large-scale integrated PICs. Here, we report an integrated tunable delay line that overcomes the delay-dependent loss, and simultaneously allows for independent manipulation of group delay and amplitude responses. It uses a ring resonator with a tunable coupler and a semiconductor optical amplifier in the feedback path. A proof-of-concept device with a free spectral range of 11.5 GHz and a delay bandwidth in the order of 200 MHz is discussed in the context of microwave photonics and is experimentally demonstrated to be able to provide a lossless delay up to 1.1 to a 5 ns Gaussian pulse. The proposed device can be designed for different frequency scales with potential for applications across many other areas such as telecommunications, LIDAR, and spectroscopy, serving as a novel building block for creating chip-scale programmable optical signal processors.

Abstract:The authors demonstrate a photonic link for stable radio frequency (RF) dissemination over fibre based on passive phase compensation with an active-assisted control method. A variable optical delay line is introduced in the transmitting link for active-assisted phase compensation. After active-assisted compensation, the residual jitter is <500 fs. Experimentally, an RF signal at a frequency of 5 GHz is successfully transmitted over a 20-km fibre link, with the stability of 2.49 x 10(-14) at 1 s and 9.19 x 10(-18) at 10(4) s.

Abstract:A long optically controlled delay line enhanced by ring configuration is demonstrated by using the group-velocity control of signal pulses based on stimulated Brillouin scattering. In experiment, two optical fibre ring cavities are used: one is used as the Brillouin laser, providing single-mode Stokes wave as probe wave; the other is used as the Brillouin amplifier, working as slow light medium. We achieve a maximum time delay of 215 ns using the ring Brillouin amplifier, five times larger than the input probe pulse width of 40 ns. In the meantime, a considerable pulse broadening is observed, which agrees well with the theoretical prediction based on linear theory.

Abstract:True time-delay line with a high resolution and wide range is proposed and demonstrated. Tunable lasers and dispersion fibers are employed to control the time delay coarsely. An optical spectrum processor is utilized to realize high-resolution time-delay control by adding a quadratic optical phase shift, which compensates the group velocity dispersion of the fiber simultaneously. A coarse tuning range of 1717 ps is realized by changing the wavelength of the optical carrier, and a high resolution of 0.67 ps is achieved by translating the symmetry axis of the quadratic phase shift.

Abstract:An optical buffer having a large delay-bandwidth-product -- a critical component for future all-optical communications networks -- remains elusive. Central to its realization is a controllable inline optical delay line, previously accomplished via engineered dispersion in optical materials or photonic structures constrained by a low delay-bandwidth product. Here we show that space-time wave packets whose group velocity in free space is continuously tunable provide a versatile platform for constructing inline optical delay lines. By spatio-temporal spectral-phase-modulation, wave packets in the same or in different spectral windows that initially overlap in space and time subsequently separate by multiple pulse widths upon free propagation by virtue of their different group velocities. Delay-bandwidth products of ~100 for pulses of width ~1 ps are observed, with no fundamental limit on the system bandwidth.

Abstract:This paper proposes a variable optical delay line based on the discrete harmonic oscillation in the waveguide lattice with a quadratic distribution of coupling coefficients. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulation have shown that the device design can achieve a time delay of up to 10 ns, with the resolution of 0.5 ns, and the 3-dB bandwidth over the whole C-band. It allows a data packet of up to 17 bits at the rate of 100 Gb/s. In this design, the propagation path is folded by up to five times (or ten times for the one-port design). Compared with the conventional fiber-delay-line buffer, this design has a small footprint (about 10 mm × 0.5 mm). A group of them can be paralleled and cascaded within a small area (e.g., 20 copies into 1 cm2) as enabled by the microfabrication. With further optimization, this design has a potential for interconnecting and signal processing applications in optical communications and computing.

Abstract:We present a complete analysis of the operation of an ultra-fast tunable parallel optical delay line. Based on our analysis, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a generalized serial–parallel delay line structure, which provides better scalability with respect to the number of timeslots. The delay line uses one electro-optic modulator and an all-fiber delay lattice. We also present a discussion on two important performance measures of this delay line – the tuning speed and the optical power loss.

Abstract:We proposed an effective approach to enlarge the slow light bandwidth and normalized-delay-bandwidth product in an optimized moire lattice-based photonic crystal waveguide that exhibits intrinsic mid-band characteristics. A flatband corresponding to a nearly constant group index of 34 over a wide bandwidth of 82 nm centered at 1550 nm with near-zero group velocity dispersion was achieved. A large normalized-delay-bandwidth product of 0.5712 with a relative dispersion of 0.114%/mu m was obtained, which is a significant improvement if compared with previous results. Our results indicate that the photonic moire lattice waveguide could advance slow light applications. (C) 2022 Optica Publishing Group

Abstract:Buffers represent one of the most important components in a communications router. The device must be able to store data packets for a substantial period of time and release the data within an acceptable delay when the switch is clear. Optical buffers—devices that store optically transmitted data—are considered key elements to achieve synchronized and contention-free traffic in the design of all-light-based communication networks. Conventional buffers use optical fiber delay lines, but since the delay is for a fixed amount of time, they are unable to guarantee contention-free connections in the switch or through a network. Hence, research on tunable optical delay lines is generating significant interest, especially with optical communications now gearing up for large-scale integration. Advances in silicon technology are making this material a choice candidate for future integrated photonics. On-chip delay lines based on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) photonic wire waveguides were recently demonstrated, consisting of up to 100 microring resonators cascaded in either coupled-resonator or all-pass filter (APF) configurations with error-free operation up to 5Gbps.1 This demonstration was a major milestone in the development of all-optical buffers for interconnects. Tunable delays in an SOI planar waveguide based on slow light induced by stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) have also been reported,2 as well as intensity-tunable group delays in siliconmicroresonators enhanced by SRS.3 The functional mechanism of a ring resonator-based optical delay line can be described as follows: When a probe beam is injected into a ring with a frequency matching the resonance of the ring, light is forced to circle multiple times, lengthening the delay. If beam frequency deviates from resonance, it will bypass the ring and no delay will occur. When a pump light, whose frequency is of a different resonance, is injected into the microring resonator, the absorbed energy is eventually converted to therFigure 1. Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a programmable low-loss 16-channel silicon-based microwave photonic signal processor using elliptical microrings and delaylines. The ellipital microrings offers flat-top filtering response to select/combine the carrier wavelength of the input optical signal. The following sixteen-channel delaylines are realized by ultra-low-loss broadened waveguides and low-phase-error Mach-Zehnder interferometer for 3.2 ps time-delay step. The overall insertion loss of the processor including the fiber-to-chip coupling loss is 10 dB. This programmable silicon photonic processor is demonstrated successfully to verify several microwave photonic signal processing functionalities: tunable delay line, beam beamforming and tunable radio-frequency filtering.

Abstract:A new method to achieve wideband continuously tunable delays in an all-fiber system is proposed, which uses dispersion in the optical fiber and spectrum filtering of supercontinuum generation of the ultra-short signal pulse in highly nonlinear fiber. A delay of 3.175 ns is experimentally demonstrated, and the potential delay up to 800 ns can be achieved using large dispersion fiber and wideband supercontinuum (SC) generation up to several hundreds of nanometers. Abstract:Abstract A stabilized delay optical path (DOP) toward absolute distance measurement is proposed based on the principle of optical balanced cross-correlation (OBCC). An OBCC signal is a subtraction from two-second harmonics generated by a periodically polarized crystal when the fundamental frequency pulses pass through periodically polarized crystal twice from the front and back. The steep slope of signal near the zero point is 67 mV nm −1 and is used to lock the fiber stretcher in the DOP by a servo controller. Thereby the purpose of stabilizing the DOP has been completed. The DOP is composed of a long fiber with two different applied lengths of ∼466 and ∼2000 m. The pulse numbers difference between delay and reference fibers are 227 and 978. The long-term repeatability of measurement deviations is 1.6 μm and 2.9 μm over 10 min, respectively. Therefore, this highly stabilized DOP can be considered as a stable device of the optical path.

Abstract:A new tunable optical delay scheme based on real-time Fourier transformation and ramp-type phase modulation is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. A linearly chirped fiber Bragg grating is adopted to implement the real-time Fourier transformation, and tunable delay is realized by changing the ramp-type modulating signal's period. Experimental results agree well with the theory. The signal distorts little after the delay, and a 18 ps delay is achieved for a 2-ps-wide optical pulse.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel wavelength tunable fiber ring laser source for a photonic beamforming system to control phased-array antenna. In this fabrication, a Sagnac loop composed of a polarization-maintaining (PM) coupler and a piece of high-birefringence (Hi-Bi) PM fiber is acted as a comb filter to make the frequency spacing equal. The wavelength of the output signal is controlled by the tunable filter outside the Sagnac loop. The intensities of the output signals with different wavelengths increased or decreased at the same frequency spacing are equal. A five-channel true-time delay system consisting of this tunable fiber source and five grating delay lines for discrete beamsteering has been demonstrated. In the experiment, the output signals of the tunable fiber ring with the equal frequency spacing have the same intensity of about 5.9 dBm and the same high signal to noise ratio (SNR) of 40 dB. If the tunable filter in this laser is replaced by a micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) tunable filter, the speed of switching wavelength will increase rapidly.

Abstract:Here we demonstrate that the fast tunable parallel optical delay line (FTDL) may be used to achieve high speed switching between optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) channels with multiple bit rates and explain how this capability can be used to implement dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA). These capabilities can provide enhanced functionality to high speed LANs and optical interconnects. This is also useful for local area networks and metro area networks that support users that have different service demands.

Abstract:We propose a novel implementation of true-time delay (TTD) using air-guiding photonic bandgap fibers (PBGFs) and a broadband light source. The air-guiding PBGFs are experimentally studied and used in the TTD module for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. The proposed approach shows the advantages of simple architecture, compact size, larger dispersion, low-temperature sensitivity, and high immunity to nonlinear effects in our experiments. The PBGFs were spliced with single-mode fibers with a 2 dB loss, and the characteristics of the PBGFs were measured. The PBGF-TTD with a continuously tunable time delays from 0 to 500 ps was demonstrated using the amplified spontaneous emission light of an erbium-doped filter amplifier as a broadband light source.
