Abstract:Iron (Fe) sites played a critical role in boosting the catalytic activity of transition metal layered double hydroxides (LDHs) electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), but the contribution of Fe content to the catalysis of Fe-doped LDHs is yet not well understood. Herein, a series of two-dimensional (2D) Fe-doped MFe-LDHs (M = Co, Ni, Cu, and Mn) were synthesized via a general molecular self-assembly method to track the role of Fe in electrocatalytic OER activities. Except for the revelation of an intrinsic activity trend of NiFe > CoFe > MnFe > CuFe, volcano-shaped relationships between the catalytic activity descriptors, i.e., overpotential, Tafel slop, and turnover frequency (TOF), and the Fe-content in the MFe-LDHs are identified. That is, a ~20% Fe content gives rise to the highest OER performance of LDH, but excessive Fe compromises the activity. A similar volcano relationship is determined between the intermediates adsorption and the Fe contents via operando impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements, and the intermediates adsorption capacitance (CPEad) could be a new activity descriptor for electrocatalysts. This work not only performs a systematic study on the role of Fe in 2D Fe-doped LDHs, but also offers some new insights into the activity descriptors for electrocatalysts.
