Physics of the Dark Universe

Abstract:An unexpected explanation for neutrino mass, Dark Matter (DM) and Dark Energy (DE) from genuine Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) of the Standard Model (SM) is proposed here, while the strong CP problem is resolved without any need to account for fundamental axions. We suggest that the neutrino sector can be in a double phase in the Universe: i) relativistic neutrinos, belonging to the SM; ii) non-relativistic condensate of Majorana neutrinos. The condensate of neutrinos can provide an attractive alternative candidate for the DM, being in a cold coherent state. We will explain how neutrinos, combining into Cooper pairs, can form collective low-energy degrees of freedom, hence providing a strongly motivated candidate for the QCD (composite) axion.

Abstract:Recent achievements in nuclear forces theory open new perspectives for the next decade of low energy nuclear physics, bringing together people from very different communities. Although many developments remain to be done, the possibility to directly use QCD to describe nuclear system is a major challenge that is within reach. In this introduction to the 2009 International Joliot-Curie School (EJC2009), new trends in the strong nuclear interaction are summarized starting from quarks and ending with finite or infinite nuclear systems. At different energy scales, selected new concepts and ideas have been discussed in a rather simple way. Recent advances in the theory of nuclear forces, thanks to chiral perturbation and effective field theories, have led to a new generation of strong nuclear interaction particularly suited to low energy nuclear physics. The interesting aspects of new interactions compared to conventional forces are underlined. Recent achievements in ab initio theories that directly start from the bare nucleon-nucleon interaction and their key role to understand the three-body force are illustrated. Finally, future perspectives for standard nuclear physics theories, namely Shell Model and Energy Density Functional, are discussed.

Abstract:We highlight the progress, current status, and open challenges of QCD-driven physics, in theory and in experiment. We discuss how the strong interaction is intimately connected to a broad sweep of physical problems, in settings ranging from astrophysics and cosmology to strongly coupled, complex systems in particle and condensed-matter physics, as well as to searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. We also discuss how success in describing the strong interaction impacts other fields, and, in turn, how such subjects can impact studies of the strong interaction. In the course of the work we offer a perspective on the many research streams which flow into and out of QCD, as well as a vision for future developments.

Abstract:Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) is the fundamental theory of strong interactions. It describes the behavior of quarks and gluons which are the smallest known constituents of nuclear matter. The difficulties in solving the theory at low energies in the strongly interacting, non-perturbative regime have left unanswered many important questions in QCD, such as the nature of confinement or the mechanism of hadronization. In these lectures oriented towards the students we introduce two classes of dualities that attempt to reproduce many of the features of QCD, while making the treatment at strong coupling more tractable: (1) the AdS/CFT correspondence between a specific class of string theories and a conformal field theory and (2) an effective low-energy theory of QCD dual to classical QCD on a curved conformal gravitational background. The hope is that by applying these dualities to the evaluation of various properties of the strongly-interacting matter produced in heavy ion collisions one can understand how QCD behaves at strong coupling. We give an outline of the applications, with emphasis on two transport coefficients of QCD matter -- shear and bulk viscosities.

QCD effective charges from low-energy neutrino structure functions

Abstract:We present a new perspective on the study of the behavior of the strong coupling $\alpha_s(Q^2)$ -- the fundamental coupling underlying the interactions between quarks and gluons as described by the Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) -- in the low-energy infrared (IR) regime. We rely on the NNSF$\nu$ determination of neutrino-nucleus structure functions valid for all values of $Q^2$ from the photoproduction to the high-energy region to define an effective charge following the the Gross-Llewellyn Smith (GLS) sum rule. As a validation, our predictions for the low-energy QCD effective charge are compared to experimental measurements provided by JLab.

Abstract:Within the $f(Q)$-gravity framework we perform a phenomenological study of the cosmological observables in light of the degeneracy between neutrinos physics and the modified gravity parameter and we identify specific patterns which allow to break such degeneracy. We also provide separately constraints on the total mass of the neutrinos, $\Sigma m_{\nu}$, and on the effective number of neutrino species, $N_{\rm eff}$, using cosmic microwave background (CMB), baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO), redshift space distortion (RSD), supernovae (SNIa), galaxy clustering (GC) and weak gravitational lensing (WL) measurements. The strongest upper bound on the total mass of the neutrinos is found for the combination of CMB+BAO+RSD+SNIa and it is $\Sigma m_\nu<0.277$ eV at 95\% C.L. For the same combination of data we find $N_{\rm eff}=2.93^{+0.31}_{-0.34}$ at 95\% C.L. We also find that all combinations of data we consider, prefer a stronger gravitational interaction than $\Lambda$CDM. Finally, we consider the $\chi^2$ and deviance information criterion statistics and find the $f(Q)+\Sigma m_\nu$ model to be statistically supported by data over the standard scenario. On the contrary $f(Q)+N_{\rm eff}$ is supported by CMB+BAO+RSD+SNIa but a moderate evidence against it is found with GC and WL data.

Abstract:In this talk, I give an overview on recent theoretical and phenomenological studies of massive neutrinos. First of all, the present status of neutrino mixing parameters is summarized. The phenomenology of neutrino oscillations is then discussed, and current understanding of lepton flavor mixing is presented. Finally, I consider the seesaw models of neutrino masses and briefly mention the direct searches at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

Abstract:The Standard Model of electroweak interactions is based on the fundamental SU(2)weak × U(1)elect representation. It assumes massless neutrinos and purely left-handed massive W± and Z0 bosons to which one should add the massless photon. The existence, verified experimentally, of neutrino oscillations poses a challenge to this scheme, since the oscillations take place between at least three massive neutrinos belonging to a mass hierarchy still to be determined. One should also take into account the possible existence of sterile neutrino species. In a somehow different context, the fundamental nature of the strong interaction component of the forces in nature is described by the, until now, extremely successful representation based on the SU(3)strong group which, together with the confining rule, give a description of massive hadrons in terms of quarks and gluons. To this is added the minimal U(1) Higgs group to give mass to the otherwise massless generators. This representation may also be challenged by the existence of both dark matter and dark energy, of still unknown composition. In this note, we shall discuss a possible connection between these questions, namely the need to extend the SU(3)strong × SU(2)weak × U(1)elect to account for massive neutrinos and dark matter. The main point of it is related to the role of axions, as postulated by Roberto Peccei and Helen Quinn. The existence of neutral pseudo-scalar bosons, that is, the axions, has been proposed long ago by Peccei and Quinn to explain the suppression of the electric dipole moment of the neutron. The associated U(1)PQ symmetry breaks at very high energy, and it guarantees that the interaction of other particles with axions is very weak. We shall review the axion properties in connection with the apparently different contexts of neutrino and dark matter physics.

Neutrino theory: open questions and future opportunities

Abstract:The subtitle of my talk is ``The quest for understanding the origin of neutrino masses''. After reviewing why the discovery of neutrino masses is also the discovery of New Physics, the substance of the talk details mechanisms for generating Majorana neutrino masses and implications for experimental searches and/or cosmology. I review high-scale seesaw, low-scale seesaw and radiative mechanisms, asking at every turn how testable the scenario is. While it is clear that determining the origin of neutrino masses -- knowing what Lagrangian to put into textbooks -- is a distant and ambitious goal, I end with experimental advances that we can reasonably hope for that would constitute progress.

Abstract:In attempting to match QCD with Nature, it is necessary to confront the many complexities of strong, nonlinear dynamics in relativistic quantum field theory, e.g. the loss of particle number conservation, the frame and scale dependence of the explanations and interpretations of observable processes, and the evolving character of the relevant degrees-of-freedom. The peculiarities of QCD ensure that it is also the only known fundamental theory with the capacity to sustain massless elementary degrees-of-freedom, gluons and quarks; and yet gluons and quarks are predicted to acquire mass dynamically so that the only massless systems in QCD are its composite Nambu-Goldstone bosons. All other everyday bound states possess nuclear-size masses, far in excess of anything that can directly be tied to the Higgs boson. These observations highlight fundamental questions within the Standard Model: what is the source of the mass for the vast bulk of visible matter in the Universe, how is its appearance connected with confinement; how is this mass distributed within hadrons and does the distribution differ from one hadron to another? This contribution sketches insights drawn using modern methods for the continuum bound-state problem in QCD, and how they have been informed by empirical information on the hadron spectrum and nucleon-to-resonance transition form factors.

Abstract:The ultrahigh energy cross section for neutrino interactions with nucleons is reviewed, and unitarity constraints are discussed. We argue that existing QCD extrapolations are self-consistent, and do not imply a breakdown of the perturbative expansion in the weak coupling.

Abstract:In the first part of the talk the interesting new results of MINOS, OPERA and CMS collaborations (connected with the observational evidence of the rise in the muon charge ratio at muon energies around 1 TeV) are briefly discussed from theoretical point of view. A short review of charge asymmetric effects in muon energy losses is given. In the second part of the talk, the modern theoretical approaches to the problem of heavy quark production in high energy nucleon-nucleus interactions are briefly considered (color dipole formalism, saturation models). The recent new theoretical developments in the ancient problem of intrinsic charm are also discussed.

A Common Origin for the QCD Axion and Sterile Neutrinos from $SU(5)$ Strong Dynamics

Abstract:We identify the QCD axion and right-handed (sterile) neutrinos as bound states of an $SU(5)$ chiral gauge theory with Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry arising as a global symmetry of the strong dynamics. The strong dynamics is assumed to spontaneously break the PQ symmetry, producing a high-quality axion and naturally generating Majorana masses for the right-handed neutrinos at the PQ scale. The composite sterile neutrinos can directly couple to the left-handed (active) neutrinos, realizing a standard see-saw mechanism. Alternatively, the sterile neutrinos can couple to the active neutrinos via a naturally small mass mixing with additional elementary states, leading to light sterile neutrino eigenstates. The $SU(5)$ strong dynamics therefore provides a common origin for a high-quality QCD axion and sterile neutrinos.

Abstract:The real-world properties of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) - the strongly-interacting piece of the Standard Model - are dominated by two emergent phenomena: confinement; namely, the theory's elementary degrees-of-freedom - quarks and gluons - have never been detected in isolation; and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (DCSB), which is a remarkably effective mass generating mechanism, responsible for the mass of more than 98% of visible matter in the Universe. These phenomena are not apparent in the formulae that define QCD, yet they play a principal role in determining Nature's observable characteristics. Much remains to be learnt before confinement can properly be understood. On the other hand,the last decade has seen important progress in the use of relativistic quantum field theory, so that we can now explain the origin of DCSB and are beginning to demonstrate its far-reaching consequences. Dyson-Schwinger equations have played a critical role in these advances. These lecture notes provide an introduction to Dyson-Schwinger equations (DSEs), QCD and hadron physics, and illustrate the use of DSEs to predict phenomena that are truly observable.

Abstract:We investigate the double differential neutrino-carbon quasielastic cross sections as measured by the MiniBooNE experiment. Our present treatment incorporates relativistic corrections in the nuclear response functions and includes the multinucleon component. We confirm our previous conclusion that it is possible to account for all the data without any modification of the axial mass. We also introduce the Q2 distribution for charged and neutral current. The data point at a sizable multinucleon component beside the genuine quasielastic peak. They are also indicative of the collective character of the nuclear response, of interest for hadronic physics.

Neutrinos as possible probes for quantum gravity

Abstract:In this paper, we aim to explore the interplay between neutrinos and quantum gravity, illustrating some proposals about the use of these particles as probes for the supposed quantized structure of spacetime. The residual signatures of a more fundamental theory of quantum gravity can manifest themselves modifying the free particle dispersion relations and the connected velocity. In neutrino sector these supposed effects can modify the time of flight for astrophysical particles with different energies and can affect the usual neutrino oscillation pattern introducing species depending perturbations. We will highlight how perturbations caused by non-standard interactions in the solar neutrino sector can mimic the presumed quantum gravity effects. In fact, the mathematical formulation of non-standard interactions is equivalent to that of CPT-odd perturbations. We will, therefore, emphasize the need to identify the nature of different contributions in order to disentangle them in the search for quantum gravity effects. As a final point we will discuss the possibility to detect in the neutrino sector decoherence effects caused by the quantum gravity supposed perturbations. By reviewing current experimental constraints and observations, we seek to shed light on the intricate relationship between neutrinos and quantum gravity, and discuss the challenges and future directions in this fascinating field of research.

Abstract:We present an SU(3)^_c× SU(2)^_L× SU(2)^_R× U(1)_L^× U(1)_R^→ SU(3)^_c× SU(2)^_L× SU(2)^_R× U(1)^_B-L left-right symmetric model with a discrete parity symmetry to realize a universal seesaw scenario. The model can simultaneously solve the strong CP problem without resorting to the unobserved axion and explain the 750 GeV diphoton resonance reported recently by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations at the LHC. Owing to large suppressions in the two-loop induced Dirac mass terms, the Majorana mass matrices of left- and right-handed neutrinos naturally share the same structure. That allows us to quantitatively study the neutrinoless double beta decay induced by the right-handed currents.
