This adaptability has inspired fabrication of actuators with structural color changes to endow soft robots with additional functionalities. Using liquid crystal-based materials for actuators with structural color changes is a promising approach. In this review, we discuss the current state of liquid crystal-based actuators with structural color changes and the potential applications of these structural color actuators in soft robotic devices.

Abstract:Inspired by stimuli-responsive creatures in nature, developing devices with synergistic color change and deformation will be of great value for realizing the adaptive variants. Yet, integrating adaptive color variation and deformation into a single device remains elusive. Herein, an intriguing electrochromic actuator based on MXene/WO3 bilayer film is developed with Fabry-Perot (F-P) microcavity, which successfully integrates both functions of reversible deformation and vivid color variations into the same device. Upon applying a small electric field, the ion intercalation/de-intercalation can synchronously alter the stress distribution and optical absorption of MXene/WO3, resulting in the dual response of electrochromic phenomenon and ultra-fast deformation with a maximum angle of 95 degrees within 10 s. Moreover, the F-P microcavity architecture with the physical light interaction additionally endows the bilayer film with a bright color gamut and high color tunability (yellow-green, purple, pink, blue, etc.). Furthermore, an asymmetric soft actuator based on MXene/WO3 bilayer film is assembled, which displays robust grasping ability and excellent cycling stability up to 1000 cycles. These findings may open new opportunities for somatosensory soft robots and next-generation intelligent robots.

Abstract:Photoactuators that can produce a reversible mechanical deformation under light stimuli have attracted tremendous interest in the recent years owing to the advantages of abundant availability of resources, remote and accurate control, and applicability in soft robots, sensors and biomimetic devices. In this study, the recent advances in photoactuators related to actuation mechanisms (photothermal and photochemical), fabricaton from different configurations and types of materials, and their potential applications in bionic movements are reviewed. The opportunities and challenges in this field are also discussed, such as fabricating actuators with robust mechanical properties and superior actuating performance, seeking effective actuation mechanisms, and widening the range of applications. This review provides an insight into designing high‐performance, multi‐functional photoactuators and serves as a motivation for their development in future.

Abstract:Stimuli responsive soft actuators have gained significant interest in recent years due to their ability to move spontaneously and continuously without the need for additional energy supply. Moreover, these soft actuators possess unique advantages such as flexibility, contactless operation, and remote control, making them suitable for various technological applications ranging from bionic robotics to biomimetic devices. These features make them promising for a wide range of applications in everyday life, industries, the environment, and beyond. Due to their unique composition and structure, MXene materials exhibit a diverse range of properties including good electrical and thermal conductivity and magnetic, optical, thermal and mechanical responses. As a result, MXene materials have become attractive candidates for high-performance stimuli responsive actuators and have received extensive attention from researchers in various fields. In this review, we summarize recent advancements in MXene-based responsive actuators, focusing on multiple driving schemes such as electrical, electro-thermal, electro-chemical, magnetic, moisture, solvent, light, pressure, pH, and multi-complex systems. In addition, the performance of some other material-based responsive actuators, e.g. , carbon materials, hydrogels, liquid crystals, and dielectric elastomers, are compared, and the potential opportunities and challenges are discussed.

Abstract:Creatures in nature make extensive use of structural color adaptive camouflage to survive. Cholesteric liquid crystals, with nanostructures similar to those of natural organisms, can be combined with actuators to produce bright structural colors in response to a wide range of stimuli. Structural colors modulated by nano-helical structures can continuously and selectively reflect specific wavelengths of light, breaking the limit of colors recognizable by the human eye. In this review, the current state of research on cholesteric liquid crystal photonic actuators and their technological applications is presented. First, the basic concepts of cholesteric liquid crystals and their nanostructural modulation are outlined. Then, the cholesteric liquid crystal photonic actuators responding to different stimuli (mechanical, thermal, electrical, light, humidity, magnetic, pneumatic) are presented. This review describes the practical applications of cholesteric liquid crystal photonic actuators and summarizes the prospects for the development of these advanced structures as well as the challenges and their promising applications.

Abstract:The flexible and programmable nature of soft actuators makes them an indispensable part of smart wearable electronic textiles. This review evaluates the integration of soft actuators into smart wearable electronic textiles, emphasizing material selection, stimulus mechanisms, and performance improvement strategies. It explores applications in healthcare, summarizing challenges and future research directions in enhancing actuator capabilities without compromising wearability. Smart wearable electronic textiles integrate sensing, perception, and control modules, which enhance human adaptability to environmental stimuli and concurrently serve as extensions for limb capabilities. The flexible and programmable nature of soft actuators makes them an indispensable part of smart wearable electronic textiles. These textiles seamlessly combine various components, such as sensors and actuators, through a comprehensive integration of materials manufacturing, circuit control, and transmission design. Exciting applications in various fields such as healthcare, sports, the Internet of Things, and human‐machine interaction have been demonstrated globally. However, there is still a persistent challenge in enhancing the actuation capabilities of soft actuators while maintaining their wearability. A timely and comprehensive review of the progress of this field is provided. Several main aspects are covered: functional materials, stimulus mechanisms, performance improvement strategies, and wearable applications in human‐related areas. Furthermore, the major approaches and challenges for improving the performance of actuators are systematically summarized.

Abstract:To add more functionalities and overcome the limitation in conventional soft robots, highly anisotropic soft actuators with color shifting function during actuation is demonstrated for the first time. The electrothermally operating soft actuators with installed transparent metal nanowire percolation network heater allow easy programming of their actuation direction and instantaneous visualization of temperature changes through color change. Due to the unique direction dependent coefficient of thermal expansion mismatch, the suggested actuator demonstrates a highly anisotropic and reversible behavior with very large bending curvature (2.5 cm−1) at considerably low temperature (≈40 °C) compared to the previously reported electrothermal soft actuators. The mild operating heat condition required for the maximum curvature enables the superior long‐term stability during more than 10 000 operating cycles. Also, the optical transparency of the polymer bilayer and metal nanowire percolation network heater allow the incorporation of the thermochromic pigments to fabricate color‐shifting actuators. As a proof‐of‐concept, various color‐shifting biomimetic soft robots such as color‐shifting blooming flower, fluttering butterfly, and color‐shifting twining tendril are demonstrated. The developed color‐shifting anisotropic soft actuator is expected to open new application fields and functionalities overcoming the limitation of current soft robots. A color‐changing soft actuator is developed for soft robot applications. The thermal energy from a metal nanowire percolation network heater induces anisotropic large deformation as well as the color change of the thin film actuator. As a proof‐of‐concept, various biomimetic transparent soft robots such as color‐shifting blooming flower a, fluttering butterflies, and color‐shifting twining tendrils are demonstrated.

Abstract:The adaptive behaviors of organisms in response to different environments can inspire the development of smart materials. These biomimetic color-changing actuating materials (BCCAMs) with complex shape memory (SM), self-healing, shape reconfigurable and reprocessing properties may be exactly what the flexible actuators/robots/electronic skins need. Here, we prepared an ultra-high strain (∼1600%) soft actuation material with fluorescence changes, self-healing, and SM performance under a single stimulus by a simple method. At the same time, we developed a simple strategy based on welding to achieve actuators that have a reconfiguring three-dimensional (3D) deformation and medium temperature reprocessing. The resulting 3D soft actuators can achieve effective coordination of these functions. Flexible actuators with multiple functions that can be triggered by a single switch are expected to have value in soft robots, flexible electronic skins, and so on.

Abstract:In nature, some creatures can change their body shapes and surface colors simultaneously to respond to the external environments, which greatly inspired researchers in the development of color-tunable soft actuators. In this work, we present a facile method to prepare a smart hydrogel actuator that can bend bidirectionally and change color simultaneously, just like an octopus. The actuator is fabricated by elastomer/hydrogel bilayer and the hydrogel layer was decorated with thermoresponsive microgels as the photonic crystal blocks. Compared with the previously reported poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) hydrogel-based bilayer hydrogel actuators, which are generally limited to one-directional deformation, the elastomer/hydrogel bilayer actuator prepared in our work exhibits unique bidirectional bending behavior in accordance with the change of structural color. The bending degrees can be changed from -360° to 270° in response to solution temperatures ranging from 20 °C to 60 °C. At the same time, the surface color changes from red to green, and then to blue, covering the full visible light spectrum. The bending direction and degree of the hydrogel actuator can easily be adjusted by tuning the layer thickness ratio of the elastomer/hydrogel or the composition of the hydrogel. The color-tunable hydrogel-elastomer actuator reported in this work can achieve both programmable deformations and color-changing highly resembling the natural actuating behaviors of creatures.

Abstract:In recent years, the advances in light‐responsive soft materials with fascinating properties and functions have attracted tremendous attention, which are also enlightening when attempting to achieve the goals of complex deformations, motions, or attractive applications by precise regulation. Attractively, light is not only a clean and inexhaustible energy but also can be controlled remotely, quickly and accurately in a non‐contact way. Moreover, light‐responsive soft materials are capable of amplifying photo‐triggered molecular changes at the microscopic scale into macroscopic deformations, that is, directly converting the input light energy into the output mechanical work, therefore enabling potential applications in the field of actuators and functional devices. To date, some wonderful reviews have reported the progress in photo‐driven soft materials. However, the research progress in ultraviolet, visible (Vis) and near‐infrared (NIR) light‐driven soft materials containing azobenzene or other non‐azobenzene moieties has not been reported yet. In this review, we summarize recent progress in light‐responsive soft materials in terms of preparation methods, response wavelengths and potential applications. Firstly, the preparation methods of photoresponsive soft materials are introduced. Subsequently, photoinduced macroscopic deformations or motions are summarized, in which Vis and NIR light‐responsive behaviors are especially highlighted. Finally, the potential applications of photoresponsive soft materials are classified. To guide the future work for researchers, the existing problems and future development prospects of light‐responsive soft materials are proposed.
Simulation Study of Dynamic Color Modulation Based on Tunable Micro/Nano-Structure Array

Abstract:With the development of nanotechnology, it has been accessible to display colors by artificial micro/nano-structure, and then the study of structure coloring has become a hot subject, opening a new space for inkless printing. In this paper, a dynamic color modulation method based on tunable micro/nano-structure array is proposed. To tune colors on the same device, a periodic micro/nano-structure array is designed with functional material inside, which could alter the height difference between up and bottom surface precisely by applying an external voltage. It is modeled, and simulated by the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method in this work. In simulations, perpendicular incident linearly polarized light source is applied, and parameters of surface height difference and period are swept. Series reflective spectra of the devices are obtained, and their corresponding colors are calculated and marked on the CIE 1931 chromaticity diagram. Simulation results demonstrate that when the period is in the range of 100-300 nm, full-color modulation could be realized by varying the height of functional material film via applied voltage, and the peak intensities of reflective spectra are at about 60%, having high energy efficiency. This method is innovative and provides a theoretical basis for the dynamic color modulation micro/nano device, which is quite promising in fields like inkless printing and display technology.
Light-Driven Soft Actuators Based On Photoresponsive Polymer Materials

Abstract:Photoresponsive polymeric materials are a kind of functional polymers that can absorb photo energy and undergo intra- or inter-molecular physical or chemical transformations. Accompanying the changes on molecular structures and configurations, the materials exhibit the variations on certain macroscopic properties such as shape, color, or refractive index in response to light. Since light is an environment-friendly, remotely controllable and instantly operatable stimulus, photoresponsive polymers attract more and more attention. By rational design, photoresponsive polymers can generate light-driven deformations or have shape-memory properties, thus they have been led to undergo sophisticated movements such as contraction/expansion, bending, creeping, and rotation and further assembled to various smart soft actuators, which have wide applications in artificial muscles, microrobots, micropumps, microvalves and so on. This article summarizes the recent progress of light-driven soft actuators made of photoresponsive liquid crystal polymers, gels, and shape-memory polymers. Their driven mechanism and development prospect are also described.

Abstract:Inspired from the nature, the soft actuators have been attracting the incremental attention on account of the benefits in terms of high flexibility and safety for human operators, but the material selection and manufacturing process remain challenging. Compared with the conventional actuators in solid state, the smart phase change materials are superior for the soft actuation applications because of the capability to change their shapes or properties in response to a wide range of stimulants, such as heat, light, pH, chemical or electrical field. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of smart phase change material application on soft actuators, including metal alloys and their polymer counterparts, shape memory materials and liquid crystalline polymers. Such materials generally exhibit the large deformation degrees, high complexity in movement and diverse versatility, which are compliant and well suited for soft actuators in the vast applications of soft mechatronics and robots. Since the stiffness variable plays a significant role during the actuator transformation, this review focuses on the smart materials with an emphasis on the different forms of phase transformation with a transition among solid, liquid and gas phase. This review enables a better understanding of phase transformation, performances, and limitations of smart phase change materials, and provide insights into the potential applications for soft actuators.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Soft actuators hold great promise for applications in biomimetic robots, artificial muscles, and drug delivery systems due to their adaptability in diverse environments. A critical aspect of designing thermally responsive soft actuators is to achieve spatially programmable actuation under a global thermal stimulus. Different local actuation behaviors can be encoded in one actuator to enable complex morphing structures for different tasks. However, it is challenging to achieve programmability beyond one or binary states. This work introduces a new grayscale ultraviolet (UV) light processing method to fabricate soft actuators with spatially tunable Young's modulus, enabling multiple programmable states in one actuator. Together with a liquid crystal elastomer actuation layer and a photothermal heating layer, the LCE programming layer with spatially programmable moduli allows different regions of the soft actuator to bend to controllable extents under a global thermal stimulus. Various shape morphing patterns can be encoded using UV photomasks with spatially controlled grayscales. Additionally, caterpillar-inspired robots capable of bi-directional crawling and octopus-arm-inspired structures for object manipulation are demonstrated. This work represents advancements in the programmability of thermally responsive soft actuators, laying the foundation for their applications in advanced soft robotic systems.
