Abstract:As tokamaks are designed and built with increasing levels of stored energy in the plasma, disruptions become increasingly dangerous. It has been reported that 95% of the disruptions in the Joint European Torus (JET) tokamak with the ITER-like wall are preceded by the growth of large locked islands, and these large islands are mostly produced by off-normal events other than neoclassical tearing modes. This paper discusses the use of RF current drive to stabilize large islands, focusing on nonlinear effects that appear when relatively high powers are used to stabilize large islands. An RF current condensation effect can concentrate the RF driven current near the center of the island, increasing the efficiency of the stabilization. A nonlinear shadowing effect can hinder the stabilization of islands if the aiming of the ray trajectories does not properly consider the nonlinear effects.

Abstract:Understanding the interaction mechanisms between large-scale magnetohydrodynamic instabilities and small-scale drift-wave microturbulence is essential for predicting and optimizing the performance of magnetic confinement based fusion energy experiments. We report progress on understanding these interactions using both analytic theory and numerical simulations performed with the BOUT++ [Dudson et al., Comput. Phys. Commun. 180, 1467 (2009)] framework. This work focuses upon the dynamics of the ion temperature gradient instability in the presence of a background static magnetic island, using a weakly electromagnetic two-dimensional five-field fluid model. It is found that the island width must exceed a threshold size (comparable with the turbulent correlation length in the no-island limit) to significantly impact the turbulence dynamics, with the primary impact being an increase in turbulent fluctuation and heat flux amplitudes. The turbulent radial ion energy flux is shown to localize near the X-point, but does so asymmetrically in the poloidal dimension. An effective turbulent resistivity which acts upon the island outer layer is also calculated and shown to always be significantly (10×–100×) greater than the collisional resistivity used in the simulations.

Abstract:The path of tokamak fusion and International thermonuclear experimental reactor (ITER) is maintaining high-performance plasma to produce sufficient fusion power. This effort is hindered by the transient energy burst arising from the instabilities at the boundary of plasmas. Conventional 3D magnetic perturbations used to suppress these instabilities often degrade fusion performance and increase the risk of other instabilities. This study presents an innovative 3D field optimization approach that leverages machine learning and real-time adaptability to overcome these challenges. Implemented in the DIII-D and KSTAR tokamaks, this method has consistently achieved reactor-relevant core confinement and the highest fusion performance without triggering damaging bursts. This is enabled by advances in the physics understanding of self-organized transport in the plasma edge and machine learning techniques to optimize the 3D field spectrum. The success of automated, real-time adaptive control of such complex systems paves the way for maximizing fusion efficiency in ITER and beyond while minimizing damage to device components.

Abstract:The resonant interaction between magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instability modes and the externally applied helical magnetic field is demonstrated in the Saskatchewan Torus-Modified (STOR-M) tokamak. The study is conducted both numerically and experimentally using a 2D MHD equilibrium code in the former and an (l = 2, n = 1) helical coil carrying a short current pulse in the latter. It is shown numerically that the resonant helical current can efficiently suppress the magnetic islands resonating on the (m = 2, n = 1) magnetic surface when the value of the safety factor at the plasma edge is relatively low (⩽4). It is also found numerically that (2, 1) islands are induced when the applied helical current exceeds a threshold. The experimental study is performed in STOR-M during low-q ohmic discharges with high MHD activities. The amplitude and frequency of (2, 1) Mirnov fluctuations are significantly reduced after the activation of the resonant field. Lesser suppression in sideband islands is also observed. Moreover, a phase of improved plasma confinement, characterized by a reduction in Hα emission level, a reduction in loop voltage and an increase in the soft x-ray emission, is induced after application of the resonant field.

Abstract:The characteristics of ion-scale turbulence in the presence of a magnetic island are numerically investigated using a gyrokinetic model in fusion plasma. We observe that in the absence of the usual ion temperature gradient (ITG) drive gradient, a magnetic island and its flatten effect could drive ITG instability. The magnetic island (MI) not only drives high- n modes of ITG instability but also induces low- n modes of vortex flow. Moreover, as the magnetic island width increases, the width of the vortex flow also increases. This implies that wider islands may more easily induce vortex flows. The study further indicates that the saturated amplitude and transport level of MI-induced ITG turbulence vary with different magnetic island widths. In general, larger magnetic islands enhance both particle and heat transport. When the magnetic island width reaches to 21 ρ i , the turbulence-driven transport becomes the same level with the cases that ITG is driven by pressure gradients. Our findings indicate the presence of intricate nonlinear effects in the modulation of plasma turbulence by MIs. These effects are of significant importance for comprehending the phenomenon of nonlinear coupling in forthcoming tokamaks such as ITER.

Abstract:Tokamaks and stellarators are the leading two magnetic confinement devices for producing fusion energy, begging the question of whether the strengths of the two could be merged into a single concept. To meet this challenge, we propose a first-of-its kind optimized stellarator-tokamak hybrid. Compared to a typical tokamak coil set, only a single simple type of stellarator coil has to be added which leads to a compact, volume- and transport-preserving magnetic field, with an added rotational transform that reaches levels thought to enhance stability.

Abstract:Providing stable and clean energy sources is a necessity for the increasing demands of humanity. Energy produced by Deuterium (D) and Tritium (T) fusion reactions, in particular in tokamaks, is a promising path towards that goal. However, there is little experience with plasmas formed by D-T mixtures, since most of the experiments are currently performed in pure D. After more than 20 years, the Joint European Torus (JET) has carried out new D-T experiments with the aim of exploring some of the unique characteristics expected in future fusion reactors, such as the presence of highly energetic ions in low plasma rotation conditions. A new stable, high confinement and impurity-free D-T regime, with reduction of energy losses with respect to D, has been found. Multiscale physics mechanisms critically determine the thermal confinement. These crucial achievements importantly contribute to the establishment of fusion energy generation as an alternative to fossil fuels.

Abstract:A universal energy partition mechanism between ions and electrons has been confirmed to exist in the scrape-off layer of both the WEST tokamak and the W7-X stellarator. A peaked plasma density structure induced by an infinite magnetic connection length structure is observed to destroy this dependence and enhance the local ion and electron temperature ratio in the stellarator. A theoretical analysis reveals that the ratio of ion and electron parallel heat conduction is predominant in determining this universality, while electrons would further be cooled in the density-peaked region.

Abstract:The impact of electromagnetic stabilization and flow shear stabilization on ITG turbulence is investigated. Analysis of a low-$\beta$ JET L-mode discharge illustrates the relation between ITG stabilization, and proximity to the electromagnetic instability threshold. This threshold is reduced by suprathermal pressure gradients, highlighting the effectiveness of fast ions in ITG stabilization. Extensive linear and nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations are then carried out for the high-$\beta$ JET hybrid discharge 75225, at two separate locations at inner and outer radii. It is found that at the inner radius, nonlinear electromagnetic stabilization is dominant, and is critical for achieving simulated heat fluxes in agreement with the experiment. The enhancement of this effect by suprathermal pressure also remains significant. It is also found that flow shear stabilization is not effective at the inner radii. However, at outer radii the situation is reversed. Electromagnetic stabilization is negligible while the flow shear stabilization is significant. These results constitute the high-$\beta$ generalization of comparable observations found at low-$\beta$ at JET. This is encouraging for the extrapolation of electromagnetic ITG stabilization to future devices. An estimation of the impact of this effect on the ITER hybrid scenario leads to a 20% fusion power improvement.

Abstract:Abstract Long-pulse operation of a self-sustained fusion reactor using toroidal magnetic containment requires control over the content of alpha particles produced by D-T fusion reactions. On the one hand, MeV-class alpha particles must stay confined to heat the plasma. On the other hand, decelerated helium ash must be expelled before diluting the fusion fuel. Here, we report results of kinetic-magnetohydrodynamic hybrid simulations of a large tokamak plasma that confirm the existence of a parameter window where such energy-selective confinement can be accomplished by exploiting internal relaxation events known as sawtooth crashes. The physical picture — a synergy between magnetic geometry, optimal crash duration and rapid particle motion — is completed by clarifying the role of magnetic drifts. Besides causing asymmetry between co- and counter-going particle populations, magnetic drifts determine the size of the confinement window by dictating where and how much reconnection occurs in particle orbit topology.

Abstract:In a quasi-axisymmetric stellarator, a significant bootstrap current will result in the generation of low-order rational surfaces and three-dimensional (3D) magnetic islands. In this paper, the influence of plasma density profiles on the equilibrium magnetic islands for the Chinese first quasi-axisymmetric stellarator (CFQS) is investigated using the HINT code. It is found that the flattening of the core plasma density profile leads to a significant suppression of magnetic islands. When the peaking factor of plasma density is 1.19, complete suppression of magnetic islands occurs while maintaining excellent integrity of the magnetic surface even with the volume-averaged plasma beta increase up to 2%. On the other hand, during the transition of a plasma density profile from flat to hollow, there is a reversal in the core bootstrap current, resulting in reduction of rotational transform values to pass through the rational surface. Hence, formation of magnetic islands in the core region. Therefore, effective inhibition of CFQS's magnetic islands can be achieved by appropriately controlling density profiles through methods like gas injection.

Abstract:Rayleigh–Taylor instability (RTI) is a primary hurdle for many different fusion approaches, most of which rely on external pressure to stabilize the plasma by impeding plasma displacement. In this paper, we report a novel method that utilizes a rotating magnetic field (RMF) to drive an azimuthal electron current to reduce the charge separation caused by RTI. The fluctuation measured in the central cell of the mirror device, approximately half a device length away from the RMF, is identified as the m=1 mode and is suppressed by the RMF in the plug cell. The azimuthal electric fields of the fluctuation are found to decrease to almost zero, and the radial confinement is improved by more than a factor of ten. The separation of the RMF region from the central cell makes this stabilization method unique because the RMF, which can complicate the local magnetic field lines, has little influence on the magnetic field configuration in the central cell. This study may shed light on the use of resonant magnetic perturbations in tokamaks as well as on stabilization methods for many other fusion experiments.

Abstract:In fusion devices, the geometry of the confining magnetic field has a significant impact on the instabilities that drive turbulent heat loss. This is especially true of stellarators, where the "trapped electron mode" (TEM) is stabilised if specific optimisation criteria are satisfied, as in the Wendelstein 7-X experiment (W7-X). Here we find, by numerical simulation, that W7-X indeed has low TEM-driven transport, and also benefits from stabilisation of the ion-temperature-gradient mode, giving theoretical support for the existence of enhanced confinement regimes at finite density gradients.

Abstract:With the advances in the optimization of magnetic field equilibria, stellarators have become a serious alternative to the tokamak, bringing this concept to the forefront of the pursuit of fusion energy. In order to be successful in experimentally demonstrating the viability of optimized stellarators, we must overcome any potential hurdles in the construction of its electromagnetic coils. Finding cost-effective ways of increasing the number of operating optimized stellarators could be key in cementing this magnetic confinement concept as a contender for a reactor. In this work, an alternative to modular coils, permanent magnets, are studied and are shown to enable the possibility of converting a tokamak into a stellarator. This is then applied to the case of ISTTOK tokamak, where an engineering design study is conducted.

Abstract:A numerical study on the influence of plasma viscosity and of the plasma beta(=kinetic pressure/magnetic pressure) parameter on the nonlinear evolution of resistive internal kink modes in tokamak plasmas is presented. A new regime with relatively low viscosity is found, such that sawtooth oscillations spontaneously evolve towards states with stationarym/n=1 magnetic islands. It is suggested that the mechanism at work in the limit of small viscosity is related to magnetic flux pumping, which, allied with the nonlinear resistive internal kink dynamics, leads to a stationary helical flow, only weakly dissipated by viscosity and entirely self-consistent with the presence of saturatedm/n=1 stationary magnetic islands. It is also found that the threshold viscosity value for the onset of the steady-state regime increases with increasing beta m/n=1 magnetic island may be relevant for the understanding of tokamak experiments, where saturated helical structures such as the density snake and steady-state magnetic islands are sometimes observed in the core plasma region where the safety factor is close to or below unity.

Abstract:The stellarator is a type of fusion energy device that - if properly designed - could provide clean, safe, and abundant energy to the grid. To generate this energy, a stellarator must keep a hot mixture of charged particles (known as a plasma) sufficiently confined by using a fully shaped magnetic field. If this is achieved, the heat from fusion reactions within the plasma can be harvested as energy. We present a novel method for designing reactor-relevant stellarator magnetic fields, which combine several key physical properties. These include plasma stability, excellent confinement of the fast moving particles generated by fusion reactions, and reduction of the turbulence that is known to limit the performance of the most advanced stellarator experiment in the world, Wendelstein 7-X.

Abstract:The fusion created by magnetically confined plasma is a promising clean and essentially unlimited future energy source. However, there are important problems hindering controlled fusion like the imperfect magnetic confinement and the associated plasma instabilities. We theoretically demonstrate how to create a fully confined magnetic field with the precise three-dimensional shape required by fusion theory, using a bulk superconducting toroid with a toroidal cavity. The vacuum field in the cavity consists of nested flux surfaces. The coils creating the field, embedded in the superconducting bulk, can be chosen with very simple shapes, in contrast with the cumbersome arrangements in current experiments, and can be spared from large magnetic forces between them. Because of the superconductor properties, the system will tend to maintain the optimum field distribution in response to instabilities in the plasma. We numerically demonstrate how a fully-confined magnetic field with the three-dimensional spatial distribution required in two of the most advanced stellarators, Large Helical Device and Wendelstein 7-X, can be exactly generated, using simple round coils as magnetic sources. Current high-temperature superconductors can be employed to construct the bulk superconducting toroid. This can lead to optimized robust magnetic confinement and largely simplified configurations in future fusion experiments.

Abstract:In this research, stabilization of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI) due to density gradients, magnetic fields, and quantum effects, in an ideal incompressible plasma, is studied analytically and numerically. A second-order ordinary differential equation (ODE) for the RTI including quantum corrections, with a continuous density profile, in a uniform external magnetic field, is obtained. Analytic expressions of the linear growth rate of the RTI, considering modifications of density gradients, magnetic fields, and quantum effects, are presented. Numerical approaches are performed to solve the second-order ODE. The analytical model proposed here agrees with the numerical calculation. It is found that the density gradients, the magnetic fields, and the quantum effects, respectively, have a stabilizing effect on the RTI (reduce the linear growth of the RTI). The RTI can be completely quenched by the magnetic field stabilization and/or the quantum effect stabilization in proper circumstances leading to a cutoff wavelength. The quantum effect stabilization plays a central role in systems with large Atwood number and small normalized density gradient scale length. The presence of external transverse magnetic fields beside the quantum effects will bring about more stability on the RTI. The stabilization of the linear growth of the RTI, for parameters closely related to inertial confinement fusion and white dwarfs, is discussed. Results could potentially be valuable for the RTI treatment to analyze the mixing in supernovas and other RTI-driven objects.
