Abstract:
s

Ever since the early pioneering work on linearly polarized electroluminescent (EL) emission from organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), polarized OLEDs have attracted a great deal of research interest due to their various promising applications. However, most reported polarized device efficiency and extinction ratio is still not high enough for real-world commercialization. In this work, we developed a new architecture of OLED with simultaneously integrated random nanohole arrays and metal nanograting for directly linearly polarized emission. The meticulously designed Aluminum nanograting functions as a polarizer to select the transverse magnetic light, while the nanohole arrays efficiently release the trapped photon flux within the device and thus enhance the linearly polarized emission efficiency. The polarization characteristics of the proposed device are studied theoretically and experimentally in detail and the measured extinction ratio of the device can approach as high as 26.9 dB in the whole emission spectrum. Moreover, the obtained extinction ratio of the developed polarized device remains nearly constant within a wide angular range of up to 60°, displaying excellent angular polarization stability. The described approach may provide an effective way to manufacturing high performance polarized light emission devices.
