Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), comprised of metal ions/clusters and organic ligands, have shown promising potential for numerous applications. Recently, luminescent MOFs (LMOFs), with the superiorities of inherent crystallinity, definite structure, tunable pore, and multiple functionalizations, have bloomed out as sensors for the detection. Numerous LMOFs have been synthesized and used for sensing applications. Herein, the recent advances of LMOFs as chemical sensors for the detection of diverse targets, including metal ions, anions, small molecules, volatile organic compounds, nitro-aromatic explosives, gases, and biomolecules, have been summarized. Additionally, the detection mechanisms and the relationship between structure and properties of the materials are also illustrated. This review could be useful reference for the rational construction and sensing applications of LMOFs.</p>

Abstract:Fluorescence-based chemical sensors have garnered significant attention due to their rapid response, high sensitivity, cost-effectiveness and ease of operation. Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been extensively utilized as platforms for constructing fluorescence sensors, owing to their ultra-high porosity, flexible tunability, and excellent luminescent properties. This feature article summarizes the progress made mainly by our research group in recent years in the construction strategies, principles, and types of MOF sensors, as well as their applications in quantitative sensing, qualitative identification analysis, and multimodal/multifunctional analysis. In addition, the challenges and an outlook on the future progression of MOF-based sensors are discussed, highlighting how these studies can contribute to addressing these issues. Hopefully, this feature article can provide some valuable guidance for the construction and application of MOFs in fluorescence sensing, thereby broadening their practical applications.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), self-assembled from metal ions with organic ligands, are well known for their intriguing framework topology, permanent porosity, and tunable optical properties and have shown great promise for a good number of applications. Over the past few years, luminescent MOFs have attracted growing attention, especially for developing various luminescent sensors, by virtue of their excellent selectivity and high sensitivity. In this feature article, we highlight some of the recent significant progress in this active research field, and provide a comprehensive review on luminescent MOFs as sensory materials for diverse sensing applications including for metal ions, anions, small molecules and gases, nitroaromatics and explosives, temperature, as well as other aspects.

Abstract:Aromatic aldehydes are important chemical raw materials with serious harm to human health and environment. Sensitive, selective and rapid detection of these compounds is of great significance. However the facile fluorescence detection of aromatic aldehydes in aqueous solution is still challenging. Herein, the solvothermal synthesis of a NH 2 -BDC-Tb-MOF using Tb 3+ ion and 2-aminoterephthalic acid (NH 2 -BDC) ligand was reported. This MOF can be used as a rapid response fluorescence sensor for highly sensitive, selective and rapid detection of syringaldehyde typed aromatic aldehydes in aqueous solution. The limit of detection can reach 0.69 μM, which was comparable with most of the reported fluorescence sensors for aromatic aldehydes. The selective detecting mechanism towards syringaldehyde typed aromatic aldehydes was also discussed in the paper.

Abstract:Photoluminescence of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is sensitive to the structure and concentration of chemical species in the surroundings since MOFs combine the advantages of highly ordered porous structures, varied luminescence origins and diversified host-guest interactions. The diversity and combination flexibility of the organic and inorganic components together with the voids within MOFs offer ample possibilities for tuning their luminescence properties. On the basis of their intrinsic framework structures and biocompatible building blocks, MOFs have stimulated great interest in the area of biosensors. By elaborating on these points, this review will provide up-to-date developments in luminescent MOFs (LMOFs) with emphasis on synthetic approaches and their application in sensing biomolecules. The design outline of LMOFs including functionalization with fluorescent linkers and metal centers and incorporating fluorescent guest molecules within MOFs is presented, and the sensing properties of LMOFs for biomolecules such as DNA/RNA, enzymes/proteins, amino acids, glucose, ascorbic acid, and antibiotics are summarized.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as chemical sensors have developed rapidly in recent years. There have been many papers concerning this field and interest is still growing. The reason is that the specific merits of MOFs can be utilized to enhance sensitivity and selectivity by various energy/charge transfers occurring among different ligands, ligand, and metal centers, such as from ligands to metal centers or metal centers to ligands, as well as from MOF skeletons to guest species. This review intends to provide an update on recent progress in various applications of different MOF-based sensors on the basis of their luminescent and electrochemical responses towards small molecules, gas molecules, ions (cations and anions), pH, humidity, temperature, and biomolecules. MOF-based sensors function by utilizing different mechanisms, including luminescent responses of "turn-on" and "turn-off", as well as electrochemical responses.

Abstract:Population growth and industrial development have exacerbated environmental pollution of both land and aquatic environments with toxic and harmful materials. Luminescence-based chemical sensors crafted for specific hazardous substances operate on host-guest interactions, leading to the detection of target molecules down to the nanomolar range. Particularly, the luminescence-based sensors constructed on the basis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are of increasing interest, as they can not only compensate for the shortcomings of traditional detection techniques, but also can provide more sensitive detection for analytes. Recent years have seen MOFs-based fluorescent sensors show outstanding advantages in the field of hazardous substance identification and detection. Here, we critically discuss the application of MOFs for the detection of a broad scope of hazardous substances, including hazardous gases, heavy metal ions, radioactive ions, antibiotics, pesticides, nitro-explosives, and some harmful solvents as well as luminous and sensing mechanisms of MOF-based fluorescent sensors. The outlook and several crucial issues of this area are also discussed, with the expectation that it may help arouse widespread attention on exploring fluorescent MOFs (LMOFs) in potential sensing applications.

Abstract:By incorporating an anthracene moiety into a framework, a multiresponsive luminescent metal-organic framework (1) has been synthesized, which exhibits both direct chemiluminescence (CL) and dual tunable photoluminescence. By utilizing the CL, 1 has been explored as a selective visual sensor for hydrogen peroxide. Moreover, 1 also exhibits tunable fluorescence response toward different analytes. For electron-rich aromatics, "turn-on" and "turnoff" responses can be simply switched by varying the excitation wavelength. For nitroaromatics, 1 exhibits novel linear quantitative quenching response. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experiments have been carried out to study the unique fluorescence response. The multiple luminescence properties and dual tunable sensing response indicate that incorporating anthracene moieties into frameworks should be a promising strategy to develop unprecedented luminescent materials with remarkable sensing properties.

Abstract:Taking advantage of high porosity, large surface area, tunable nanostructures and ease of functionalization, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been popularly applied in different fields, including adsorption and separation, heterogeneous catalysis, drug delivery, light harvesting, and chemical/biological sensing. The abundant active sites for specific recognition and adjustable optical and electrical characteristics allow for the design of various sensing platforms with MOFs as promising candidates. In this review, we systematically introduce the recent advancements of MOFs-based fluorescent chemosensors and biosensors, mainly focusing on the sensing mechanisms and analytes, including inorganic ions, small organic molecules and biomarkers (e.g., small biomolecules, nucleic acids, proteins, enzymes, and tumor cells). This review may provide valuable references for the development of novel MOFs-based sensing platforms to meet the requirements of environment monitoring and clinical diagnosis.

Abstract:MOFs are self-assembled by inorganic metals and organic ligands, which have the advantages of inorganic and organic materials. With its porosity, chemical tunability and moderate-to-high stability, MOFs have become excellent candidates for fluorescence sensors. The accuracy, sensitivity, selectivity and linear range of the MOF-based fluorescence sensor can be further improved by introducting other fluorescent molecules into the MOFs. MOF-based fluorescence sensors can be widely used in water and air pollution detection, early diagnosis and treatment of diseases and other fields. This review first fouces on the principle of MOF-based fluorescence sensors, including the origin of fluorescence signal, response mode and mechanism. Subsequently, the latest developments of MOF-based fluorescence sensors are reported according to the classification of the analytes. Finally, the challenges faced by MOF-based fluorescence sensors are discussed and some solutions and directions for future have been proposed.
