Benevolence as the Basis of Ritual Duty and the Practice of Rites for Achieving Benevolence——On the Doctrine of Benevolence and Rites by Xun Zi

Abstract:Following Confucius' ideology, Xun Zi further developed the Confucian doctrine of benevolenceand rites. On the one hand, he took the benevolence as the very core of human goodness and the best natureof human life, regarding benevolence as the basis and essence of ritual system. According to him, benevolentvirtues are the prerequisite of the practice of rites while the practice of rites is the logical result of benevolentvirtues being extended and externalized. On the other hand, the implication of benevolence has much to dowith sound judgement and classification, with the efforts to highlight rites to make them regulations and laws,and further more, the practice of rites and the guarding of righteousness is the only way to achieving benevol-ence. The purpose of benevolent virtues is to regulate the social order by following rites. The Confuciandoctrine of benevolence thus developed into Xun Zi's doctrine of rites. Confucian ideology is thus extendedfrom the inner concern to the external concern, from ideal to practice.
