The historical Development of the Postfield in written German and its cognitive Justification: A corpus-based Study

Abstract:According to topological field theory, the space behind the right brace structures in German sentences is described as postfield, and it is principally expected to be empty. However, some scholars in recent years have pointed out that the existence of postfield elements is not a linguistic exception, but must rather be perceived as a secondary standard. Moreover, some studies have claimed that an increasing number of postfield elements have been used in the past centuries. With the help of TuBa-D/Z, a German annotation treebank of authentic language materials, and DTA-NF, a corpus from the German Text Archive (DTA) with manual annotation, this paper argues that: 1) The use of postfield elements has decreased over the past three centuries. 2) In this time span fewer clausal structures, but more non-clausal structures were used in the postfield. Overall, subclauses and prepositional phrases were the most common structures that were used in the postfield. 3) By using postfield elements, language users initiated a mechanism of minimizing dependency distance to tackle the limited working memory of human beings. This mechanism has exerted influence on the use of human language in different periods of history, which once again confirms that language is a human-driven complex adaptive system.
