Abstract:The two-dimensional (2D) perovskite (including pure-2D and quasi-2D) is formed by introducing large-group ammonium halides into conventional bulk perovskite. In the past twenty years, 2D perovskite materials were widely developed with the enriched species and advanced physical-knowledge in material characteristics as well as optoelectronic device applications. To review achievments in 2D perovskite, the fundamental mechanism and properties of 2D perovskite are introduced to offer insight into device performance. Moreover, the preparation methods of 2D perovskite films are summarized and compared. The latest successful applications of the 2D perovskite in the solar cells and light-emitting diodes fields, especially the advanced stability of 2D perovskite solar cells (PeSCs) and the efficient 2D perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs), are also achieved. Furthermore, the challenges and outlook of 2D perovskite materials are proposed.

Abstract:Abstract In recent years, research on organic‐inorganic lead halide two‐dimensional (2D) perovskites has been blossoming. 2D perovskites have completely different layered structures from three‐dimensional perovskites, with interleaved organic and inorganic layers, leading to 2D perovskite materials being more stable and possessing anisotropic electrical transport. Meanwhile, 2D organic‐inorganic lead halide perovskite single crystals are receiving increasing attention because of their remarkable properties, such as long charge carrier lifetime, low defect density, and high photoluminescence quantum yield, increasing their potential for optoelectronic applications. Previously, a series of material systems based 2D perovskites single crystals has been synthesized and applied in various device applications. In this review, the preparation methods of organic‐inorganic lead halide 2D perovskite single crystals, the growth principles, their photoelectric properties and several device applications are discussed. image

Abstract:Optoelectronic devices are key building blocks for sustainable energy, imaging applications, and optical communications in modern society. Two-dimensional materials and perovskites have been considered promising candidates in this research area due to their fascinating material properties. Despite the significant progress achieved in the past decades, challenges still remain to further improve the performance of devices based on 2D materials or perovskites and to solve stability issues for their reliability. Recently, a novel concept of 2D material/perovskite heterostructure has demonstrated remarkable achievements by taking advantage of both materials. The diverse fabrication techniques and large families of 2D materials and perovskites open up great opportunities for structure modification, interface engineering, and composition tuning in state-of-the-art optoelectronics. In this review, we present comprehensive information on the synthesis methods, material properties of 2D materials and perovskites, and the research progress of optoelectronic devices, particularly solar cells and photodetectors which are based on 2D materials, perovskites, and 2D material/perovskite heterostructures with future perspectives.

Abstract:Due to the superior optoelectronic properties of halide perovskites, it has attracted wide attentions during the past decade, especially in the field of energy. When the dimension of halide perovskites reduces, novel properties will appear, such as large exciton binding energy, high photoluminescence quantum yield, and enlarged band gap. This way, low dimensional halide perovskites, especially two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskites, have attracted intensive attention in recent years and showed promising applications, including photodetectors, light emitting diodes (LEDs), and solar cells. Various methods were then developed for the synthesis of 2D halide perovskites and studying the exciting optoelectronic properties. The optoelectronic devices based on 2D halide perovskites showed excellent performance, particularly high sensitive photodetection, high electroluminescence with sharp emission peak, and environmental stable solar cells with decent power conversion efficiency. In this case, 2D halide perovskites become superstar materials in perovskites research area. In this review, we summarize the recent progresses in the synthesis and energy applications of 2D halide perovskites, and challenges and future directions in the field.

Abstract:Organic–inorganic two-dimensional (2D) perovskite is an optoelectronic material, with quantum-well structure and improved moisture stabilities, which has been widely used in various optoelectronic devices recently. In this review, the structure and properties of organic–inorganic 2D perovskite materials are first briefly introduced. After that, according to the different photoelectron coupling mechanisms, the recent progress of typical 2D perovskite-based optoelectronic devices is described in detail: including photodetectors, light-emitting diodes, solar cells, and lasers, as well as some optoelectronic devices (e.g., optical memory and optical synapses). We analyzed the influence of structure, manufacturing process, and material selection on device performance and showed promising progress in different applications. Subsequently, we proposed the possible breakthrough development direction of 2D perovskite-based optoelectronic devices in the coming years. This work points out the way for future progress of 2D perovskite-based optoelectronic devices, which is conducive to further improving device performance and inspiring designs of high-performance organic–inorganic 2D perovskite-based optoelectronic devices.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Abstract Two-dimensional (2D) organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites feature characteristics of inherent quantum-well structures and intriguing optoelectronic properties, and have therefore attracted enormous research attention for their optical applications in light emitting, sensing, modulation, and telecommunication devices. The low-cost and solution-processed fabrications as well as alternative organic spacer cations endue 2D hybrid perovskites with higher tunability in optical and photonic applications. In particular, they demonstrate distinguished nonlinear optical characters such as second-harmonic generation (SHG), two-photon absorption (2PA), and saturable absorption (SA) under the excitation of laser pulses. Here, we discuss the construction of the various sorts of 2D hybrid perovskites with different structural features. We have also highlighted some representative properties and applications of these 2D hybrid perovskites in both linear and nonlinear optical regimes.

Abstract:As an important category of perovskite materials, two-dimensional (2D) perovskites are attracting increasing research attention these days. Their possibility of combining high performance and stability for perovskite based optoelectronic devices has triggered a new wave of research. This review mainly focuses on the application of 2D perovskite materials for solar cells. We start with a brief introduction of 2D perovskite structures and their unique properties. The recent progress in 2D perovskite solar cells is summarized in three aspects according to the existing forms of the perovskite materials in the devices. In the end, a short outlook with our opinion is given to indicate the possible development trend for this kind of perovskite material.

Abstract:Recently, organic and inorganic halide perovskites are one of the most popular semiconductors owing to their enormous potential for optoelectronic application, such as photovoltaics (PV), light‐emitting diode (LED), photodetector, and so on. The photoelectric conversion efficiency of 3D organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells has increased rapidly; however, the commercialization of the related devices is largely hampered by the poor stability of perovskite materials under environmental stress. Compared to 3D halide perovskites, quasi‐2D (Q‐2D) perovskites have improved moisture stability and less tendency for ion migration, which offers a new approach to stabilize perovskite‐based optoelectronic devices. Furthermore, Q‐2D hybrid perovskites have diverse structures with different quantum confinement and dielectric confinement characteristics, which enables the fine‐tuning of their optoelectronic properties through structure engineering. Depending on the different structures of spacer organic cations, the Q‐2D perovskite structure mainly includes Ruddlesden−Popper (RP) phase structure, Dion−Jacobson (DJ) phase structure, and alternating cation in the interlayer space (ACI) phase structure. In this review, the state‐of‐the‐art in Q‐2D perovskites is discussed based on their structural engineering, and an overview of PV and LEDs applications is provided. Finally, a brief outlook with respect to the development of Q‐2D perovskite materials, as well as advanced device, is provided.

Abstract:AbstractConventional 3D organic–inorganic halide perovskites have recently undergone unprecedented rapid development. Yet, their inherent instabilities over moisture, light, and heat remain a crucial challenge prior to the realization of commercialization. By contrast, the emerging 2D Ruddlesden−Popper‐type perovskites have recently attracted increasing attention owing to their great environmental stability. However, the research of 2D perovskites is just in their infancy. In comparison to 3D analogues, they are natural quantum wells with a much larger exciton binding energy. Moreover, their inner structural, dielectric, optical, and excitonic properties remain to be largely explored, limiting further applications. This review begins with an introduction to 2D perovskites, along with a detailed comparison to 3D counterparts. Then, a discussion of the organic spacer cation engineering of 2D perovskites is presented. Next, quasi‐2D perovskites that fall between 3D and 2D perovskites are reviewed and compared. The unique excitonic properties, electron–phonon coupling, and polarons of 2D perovskites are then be revealed. A range of their (opto)electronic applications is highlighted in each section. Finally, a summary is given, and the strategies toward structural design, growth control, and photophysics studies of 2D perovskites for high‐performance electronic devices are rationalized.

Abstract:Organic and inorganic hybrid perovskites (e.g., CH(3)NH(3)PbI(3)), with advantages of facile processing, tunable bandgaps, and superior charge-transfer properties, have emerged as a new class of revolutionary optoelectronic semiconductors promising for various applications. Perovskite solar cells constructed with a variety of configurations have demonstrated unprecedented progress in efficiency, reaching about 20% from multiple groups after only several years of active research. A key to this success is the development of various solution-synthesis and film-deposition techniques for controlling the morphology and composition of hybrid perovskites. The rapid progress in material synthesis and device fabrication has also promoted the development of other optoelectronic applications including light-emitting diodes, photodetectors, and transistors. Both experimental and theoretical investigations on organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites have enabled some critical fundamental understandings of this material system. Recent studies have also demonstrated progress in addressing the potential stability issue, which has been identified as a main challenge for future research on halide perovskites. Here, we review recent progress on hybrid perovskites including basic chemical and crystal structures, chemical synthesis of bulk/nanocrystals and thin films with their chemical and physical properties, device configurations, operation principles for various optoelectronic applications (with a focus on solar cells), and photophysics of charge-carrier dynamics. We also discuss the importance of further understanding of the fundamental properties of hybrid perovskites, especially those related to chemical and structural stabilities.

Abstract:Halide perovskites are promising materials for light-emitting and light-harvesting applications. In this context, two-dimensional perovskites such as nanoplatelets or Ruddlesden-Popper and Dion-Jacobson layered structures are important because of their structural flexibility, electronic confinement, and better stability. This review article brings forth an extensive overview of the recent developments of two-dimensional halide perovskites both in the colloidal and non-colloidal forms. We outline the strategy to synthesize and control the shape and discuss different crystalline phases and optoelectronic properties. We review the applications of two-dimensional perovskites in solar cells, light-emitting diodes, lasers, photodetectors, and photocatalysis. Besides, we also emphasize the moisture, thermal, and photostability of these materials in comparison to their three-dimensional analogs.
Quantum confinement effect on the electronic and optical properties of two-dimensional halide perovskites

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskites have garnered significant attention due to their inherent stability, excellent optoelectronic properties, and versatile structural diversity, making them promising for solar cell applications. Here, by using the first-principles calculation based on density functional theory, the structural and optoelectronic properties of 2D halide perovskites are investigated. Results reveal a clear relationship in structural and optoelectronic properties. The band gaps of 2D halide perovskites decrease with the sheet of inorganic (or organic) layers increasing (or decreasing). Calculated charge density at the band edges and averaged electrostatic potential explain this structure-properties relationship comes from quantum confinement effect induced by the unique quantum-well-like structure. This theoretical work provides comprehensive understanding of the optoelectronic properties and a guideline for designing new 2D halide perovskite with desired optoelectronic properties.

Abstract:As a new generation of solution-processable optoelectronic materials, organic-inorganic hybrid halide perovskites have attracted a great deal of interest due to their high and balanced carrier mobility, long carrier diffusion length and large light absorption coefficient. These materials have demonstrated wide applications in solar cell, light-emitting diode, laser, photodetector, catalysis and other fields. Comparing with their polycrystalline film counterpart, perovskite single crystals have low trap density and no grain boundaries and thus are anticipated to possess much better optoelectronic performances. Herein, we review the key progress in the development of organic-inorganic halide perovskite single crystals. Particularly, the crystal growth techniques and applications of these advanced materials are highlighted.

Abstract:Two‐dimensional (2D) perovskites have received great attention recently due to their structural tunability and environmental stability, making them highly promising candidates for various applications by breaking property bottlenecks that affect established materials. However, in 2D perovskites, the complicated interplay between organic spacers and inorganic slabs makes structural analysis challenging to interpret. A deeper understanding of the structure‐property relationship in these systems is urgently needed to enable high‐performance tunable optoelectronic devices. Herein, we examine how structural changes, from constant lattice distortion and variable structural evolution, modeled with both static and dynamic structural descriptors, affect macroscopic properties and ultimately device performance. We report the effect of chemical composition, crystallographic inhomogeneity, and mechanical‐stress‐induced static structural changes and corresponding electronic band variations. Additionally, the structure dynamics are described from the viewpoint of anharmonic vibrations, which impact electron‐phonon coupling and the carriers' dynamic processes. Correlated carrier‐matter interactions, known as polarons and acting on fine electronic structures, are then discussed. Finally, we propose reliable guidelines to facilitate design to exploit structural features and rationally achieve breakthroughs in 2D perovskite applications. This review provides a global structural landscape of 2D perovskites, expected to promote the prosperity of these materials in emerging device applications. This article is protected by copyright. Theoretical investigation of halide perovskites for solar cell and optoelectronic applications

Abstract:The solar cell based on organic-inorganic hybrid halide perovskite is progressing amazingly fast in last decade owing to the robust experimental and theoretical investigations. First-principles calculation is one of the crucial ways to understand the nature of the materials and is practically helpful to the development and application of perovskite solar cells. Here, we briefly review the progress of theoretical studies we made in the last few years on the modification of electronic structures of perovskites by varying the composition, configuration, and structure, and the new understandings into the defect properties of halide perovskites for solar cell and optoelectronic applications. These understandings are foundations and new starting points for future investigations. We hope the experience and inspiration gained from these studies encourage more theoretical explorations for new functional perovskite-based materials.

Abstract:Halide perovskites have high light absorption coefficients, long charge carrier diffusion lengths, intense photoluminescence, and slow rates of non‐radiative charge recombination. Thus, they are attractive photoactive materials for developing high‐performance optoelectronic devices. These devices are also cheap and easy to be fabricated. To realize the optimal performances of halide perovskite‐based optoelectronic devices (HPODs), perovskite photoactive layers should work effectively with other functional materials such as electrodes, interfacial layers and encapsulating films. Conventional two‐dimensional (2D) materials are promising candidates for this purpose because of their unique structures and/or interesting optoelectronic properties. Here, we comprehensively summarize the recent advancements in the applications of conventional 2D materials for halide perovskite‐based photodetectors, solar cells and light‐emitting diodes. The examples of these 2D materials are graphene and its derivatives, mono‐ and few‐layer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), graphdiyne and metal nanosheets, etc. The research related to 2D nanostructured perovskites and 2D Ruddlesden–Popper perovskites as efficient and stable photoactive layers is also outlined. The syntheses, functions and working mechanisms of relevant 2D materials are introduced, and the challenges to achieving practical applications of HPODs using 2D materials are also discussed.

Abstract:In the growing list of 2D semiconductors as potential successors to silicon in future devices, metal-halide perovskites have recently joined the family. Unlike other conversional 2D covalent semiconductors such as graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides, black phosphorus, etc., 2D perovskites are ionic materials, affording many distinct properties of their own, including high photoluminescence quantum efficiency, balanced large exciton binding energy and oscillator strength, and long carrier diffusion length. These unique properties make 2D perovskites potential candidates for optoelectronic and photonic devices such as solar cells, light-emitting diodes, photodetectors, nanolasers, waveguides, modulators, and so on, which represent a relatively new but exciting and rapidly expanding area of research. In this Review, the recent advances in emerging 2D metal-halide perovskites and their applications in the fields of optoelectronics and photonics are summarized and insights into the future direction of these fields are offered.
